Not only INXS's best song, but holds up so well today would consider one of the greatest songs of the last 50 years. Too bad it never got the recognition it deserves.
I listen often to this incredible and powerful song, and every year on 22 nov. My birthday coincides with the day Michael H. died. I remember that day in '97. I'm 38 now and nostalgia kicks in. I hope to live long enough to enjoy this masterpiece as well as all their other songs. I raise this glass for you Michael. You'll never be forgotten, you're long gone but your music lives on and I am greatful for the legacy INXS left us. Cheers!
I remember that day with clarity as well … paired with a 10yo child’s experience of John Lennon in October of 1980… powerful emotions arise when I hear their voices
"All are different all are great" is such a powerful message to hear, especially now. Michael was way ahead of his time. Thank you so much. RIP Michael you are dearly missed 💔😢...m
The best song on X by a country mile. A very prophetic song, " the nature of your tragedy is chained around your neck", considering how Michael passed.
My ipod was on shuffle this morning and I'm on the bus into work crossing the Anzac Bridge with a Sydney sunrise to my left and this song comes on. I nearly shed a tear it was so perfect.
Beautiful Song by Micheal. He is gone, but he will never ever be forgotten by the many people, that he has touched with the music he has left us all. I am very lucky I was able to see him and his band Inxs perform 5 times though out the 80's & 90's. "He was INXS" ALWAYS WILL BE... God bless Micheal Hutchence.
because it wasn't released as a single (it was a single only in the Netherlands) and so it didn't become a hit. If it was I have no doubt that it would have been a smash.
Great song! I met Michael in the Summer of 97, he was just as lovely and wonderful as you would imagine. He invited me onstage during the last song, I danced with him during the last song of the night (Suicide Blonde), we spoke for a few minutes after the show and he hugged me several times and then he kissed me - what a lovely class act. Love him!
Amen, what a wonderfully blessed lyrical songwriter. All of INXS are superb. For a long time I tried to hide this song from everyone, I wanted it to be for me and me alone. It will be my funeral song.
I came to listen because INXS twitter account just asked what’s the best inxs song, and this one was mentioned a lot, along with don’t change and never tear us apart.
The Stairs HAS received recognition and is NOT under-rated. You and I are listening! Hands down, the best INXS has ever given us fans. Thank you Michael, RIP!
"There are reasons here to give your life And follow in your way The passion lives to keep your faith Though all are different all are great" Great lyrics. No need to take them out of context, and they were written at least six years before he died.
Summer 1991.... everyone listening to Nirvana's Nevermind, including me....but I had a gem called X... My friends didn't understand, we were all listening to Blood Sugar Sex Magik while going down to the shore every weekend....but this was my go to...... incredible and profound... RIP Michael..
This song came late in INXS's career when a lot of (U.S.) fans were moving on to other sounds. If it had come out a couple of years earlier it would have been a huge hit. It probably has the best-written lyrics of any of their songs and it sounds incredible.
Because it's timeless (except maybe not that crowded due to coronavirus)..but we still can listen to the walls hearing our neighbors in our apartments...( Not because we're trying to but because we're couped up and forced to be inside.)
I was lucky enough to hear an interview with the band on a local Chicago radio station when this album came out. (XRT) Michael said the song was truly about strangers living in the same building going about their lives and not even knowing each other living right under the same roof. It did not get a lot of air play when it first came out (least in Chicago) but this is my favorite INXS song.
Super talented frontman, absolute top quality...this is how to sing , life or in the studio, exactly the same, only a few singers in the world can do this...
I heard this song when I was 11 years old and knew it was absolutely incredible and beautifully written. These lyrics are to the poem of a life that goes by so fast without us ever able to catch up
I think this track really shows what a beautiful voice Micheal had. Sounds totaly natural and uncontrived too. Not my favorite rock band but definently one of the best rock singers ever.
I always return to INXS, I’ve moved on musically and probably in my life too but ultimately they are always going to be the first band I loved. 34 years old this song.
A Masterpiece lyrically and SO heartbreaking !! I love this song by INXS and the phenomenal voice of Michael Hutchence makes it Magical....the line: the Nature of your tragedy, is chained around your neck...aswell as the line: Climbing as we falls...cuts deep into your heart and soul and never let it go..........this Gorgeous vulnerable and sensitive gifted artist, gone far too soon.......I miss you deeply and I always will.....
Amen, what a wonderfully blessed lyrical songwriter. All of INXS are superb. For a long time I tried to hide this song from everyone, I wanted it to be for me and me alone. It will be my funeral song.
I was one of the few kids in my hometown in Northern California that appreciated INXS. When their album X came out I bought it on audio cassette. Like everyone else, I liked “Suicide Blonde,” “Disappear,” and “Bitter Tears,” but always came back to listen to “The Stairs.”Something about it spoke to me. I think that besides the poetic lyrics the buildup of the intro reminded me of the beginning of “Where the Streets Have No Name” by U2. Evoking passion and deep feeling in me. I always understood it to be about human connection.
Fu*k me it takes you back to a time when you were growing up and REAL music existed... Lucky enough to see them three times in concert and can't tell you how underestimated a band they were.. Amazing music

I'm glad you found these guys too. I wonder why you haven't heard their music through your parents though. Anyway, just remember to put your phone in your pocket when you're at a concert, the memories are way better as well as the experience.
Funny how life works, i had the opposite experience. I listened to this cassette repeatedly when i was about 11 years old and it changed my world and profoundly for the better! This lyrics, Michaels voice, the riffs, the harmonies, the pure passion! Unlike anything i had ever heard. So glad my parents had this cassette and a few other of that era! Like 30 years ago I saw a little bit of this video in a display tv in a store, never knew which song it was, only rememebered the scene of the traffic 1:24 - 1:19 until I got the DVD of the GH, amazing song.
I've Sky+ that concert and just recently bought the video. It must have been amazing to be there and I've watched it over and over.......been a fan for over 20yrs and Hutch will just live on forever in his music.
I grew listening to INXS! Saw them in concert numerous times and could never get enough of them! Michael was an intergral part of the success of INXS! Taking his own was tragedy and i think he'd had not done so in his prime this band would have had more great songs like this. I recently heard this via google play and my Google home, just playing random. I have me chills and took me back some 20 some odd years. Great song.. good for motivation
IAM Aussie and this is by far one of the best tracks ever I was finishing my last year of graded 10 1990 at Cook town High school I bought the audio tape INXS X I believe this album and four years before the kick album are by far Michael and INXS best two albums ever .it was the major international break thru for our Aussie band INXS global presence

41 people agree with you…especially now❤
I totally agree my favourite too❤
the intro just blows me away every single time, and I'm old enough to say I bought the record when it was brand new
Me and my wife’s song she lived in a flat above me and we passed each other on the stairs x
Nice...
One of the best INXS songs. So talented and charismatic person, stil miss Michael. ❤

My favorite INXS tune always will be it has brought me to tears many times. I find it absolutely gorgeous. Melody and harmonies are almost matchless.
Agree with it being their best song is reflection of timeless music in the world. We live in today.
"All are different all are great" is such a powerful message to hear, especially now. Michael was way ahead of his time. Thank you so much. RIP Michael you are dearly missed 💔😢...m

i've listened to this song a million times and it hits me just as hard every time.
One of their most underrated and underplayed songs. It is one of my favs. It is so beautiful, gives me goosebumps. Gosh Michael was beautiful.
A-fuckin-men
Hands down, my favorite song of theirs. “Don’t Change” is second, but it’s this one by a mile.

this song has never received the recognition it truly deserves. its absolutely timeless, beautiful & so very true.
Agreed
I never understood why it never made it onto the majority of the "Greatest hits", and "Best of" releases, its one of their most beautiful songs!
you nailed it.... This is an EPIC song of the great INXS..... it slams down tremendously.
+Aamir Afzal I totally agree! The message is so true too.

One of the most underrated frontmen of 20th century music.
Such a timeless song. Michael was a true genius at song writing. This is his masterpiece, in my opinion.
Quite possibly the finest rock song ever written....The lyrics cut like a knife...

I agree completely. My most favourite song of all.
What a intro and what a song still sounds superb in 2018 .
Still glad to hear this song. One of the best "X" tracks. Play it loud...Peace...
I remember the triumph I secretly felt as a spotty shy teenager getting this song as our "Prom Song" in 1991 small town Manitoba, Canada.
Excelente banda.....michael lejos el mejor vocalista!!!
I'm so grateful for having attended INXS X gig back in 1991 in Budapest.... Fell in love then and still lasts...
This is the very best of INXS!!!!!!! I think one of the best period!!!!

Absolutely the best. Just a great simple rock'n roll story. Everyday we pass each other on the stairs, not knowing each other. Just two strangers.
Yes, but there's much more in the song than just that
