Oh my god. That was just devastatingly clever. I can't believe that one person, working alone, had the sheer wit and intelligence to compose that reply. Future generations will marvel at the genius of this utterly profound insight. Bravo.
Ha, this, I love. Knowing the "original" recording, with full band, you can only admire this one. The pureness of his voice, guided by keys and bass, and yes, no Becker is heard on this recording... I have come addicted to the jazzy chords of Fagan/ Steely Dan. As far as his voice is concerned; you either love it or hate it. I happen to love it. BTW, I had this "voice" discussion also, concerning David Sylvian....... but that's a different matter of course.
Thanks for making this demo sound so much better. Although I prefer the produced version that should have been on the album, I dig the rawness and lyrics of this track
They weren't released as a compilation, to my knowledge. I was lucky enough to find some of these, from a no-longer existent blog, that featured these upgraded versions of songs from that time period.
Thank you for posting. Love the raw drunken masculine style in this take and lyrics. This would have been a fine addition to Gaucho contrary to what several have stated here. Think I would have preferred it over Hey Nineteen or Third World Man.
Well, either of the versions are demo cuts, since this track never made it to any album, so both versions can be considered demos.Remember there were, at one time, two versions of Gaucho.
I think this an absolutely stunning song, a real Fagen/Becker clasic. "Gaucho" I feel would have benefited from including both "Third World Man" and "The Second Arrangement". And then perhaps dropping one of the others. But certainly not this; I can just imagine it being given the full Dan treatment; it would have been sublime.
Remember: there were two "Gauchos:" The one released, and the one produced before the label change, hence it taking a year, in legal battles, to come out. This track is unfortunately one of the pre label change. Still good, though!
evelsteev I didn't know that, I only know the official version. I love all the Dan albums, but "Gaucho" is the only one I might be tempted to say "what if" about. Such as for example, it being longer. Still, by the standards of most bands, masterly.
evelsteev Thanks, it sure is. "Kulee Baba" is musically sublime. What a masterpiece "Gaucho" would have been if "The Second Arrangement", "Talkin' 'Bout my Home" and "Kulee Baba", had been included in some form; and maybe one of the songs that did make it, dropped. Still a great album though.
Carl Halling I'm no Dan expert, but from what I've read, there was actually a "hidden" Gaucho (started on, in 1978), where these songs were included, and was this version of the album was actually the intended version to be put out, but unfortunately,"The Second Arrangement" in its final, mixed down version, got accidentally erased by an intern, and was never recovered. The year after, MCA Records bought ABC Records, and because of that, Steely Dan couldn't release an album. Becker and Fagen had planned on leaving ABC for Warner Bros. Records, but MCA claimed ownership of their music, preventing them from changing labels. If it weren't for that mess, we could have had more Steely Dan albums for 1978, 1979, as well, as 1980!
To me it sounds like a bunch of little snippets of their other songs all strung together.I hear a little bit of "Josie" a little bit of "Green Earrings" and some other stuff. Maybe if I had heard it on a cd in its finished version it wouldn't sound that way.Don't get me wrong.I love Steely Dan.Back in the 90's I didn't think I'd ever get to see them live, but I've seen them twice now since 2003.I wish they'd release a new studio album. In the 70's they didn't like touring, now that's all they do.
Wow, how'd you even post this lol? Universal Music Group is copyright claiming every The Second Arrangement video on RUclips besides some. Thanks for the cool video :)
I really love this!! Where did you get it? Very tasty. It's cool to hear how this developed. Shame it was lost...but this song really does have a cult following. :-)
@drewper73 There's another version of this track, floating around somewhere, which is more complete, with drums and all. And yes, it sounds like another Steely Dan classic! like "Josie." However, the sound quality is terrible :(
Having listened to other versions I would say this is the demo for the musicians to get their teeth into. Also the lyrics are yet to be completed. The other two decent versions I've heard are an almost complete instrumental version ( I think is the attempt to recreate it after deletion) and one with guitars and backing vocals. The latter had no horns or a proper Dan guitar solo but the quality is poor. It's so frustrating as both of these give a great indication of how good this track could have been. So sad.
This song was actually supposed to be released on their 1980 album, "Gaucho"- for some reason, however, an idiot assistant engineer accidentally erased the entire song while trying to queue it up for listening.
this was considered as one of the best tracks from the gaucho sessions but it got accidentally erased by an engineer and they couldnt face starting over in view of their perfectionist attitude actually this version does not do it justice & I have heard a better version on you tube...........dan fan for approx 37 years
MR EVELSTEEV... Here is a query for you... are all these random unreleased tracks available as a Comp anywhere?? I would sure like to fund THAT ! Thanks for putting these up..VERY enjoyable...
I recorded a version of this song but the outtake I copped the chords and lyrics from was from a different (more orchestrated) version by the Dan. This is nice though. Of course it's Becker and Fagen.
Because some dipshit deleted the original studio version. They tried recreating it, but... It's pretty meh. It doesn't have the same edge this demo does.
evelsteev I just pulled the video into Audition and inverted the right channel. :-) I don't know of a place where the corrected version has been uploaded.
I mean, do you seriously think I meant it literally? Seriously? Like, do you understand the concept of calling something that sounds really cool 'perfect' when you actually just mean 'really cool'? People do that sometimes, you know.
I always thought the song Gaucho didn't have an interesting enough sound to be on the Gaucho album Gaucho sounded like less than filler material to me. The Dan should have replaced Gaucho with Al Stewart's Time Sausages, but kept the album name Gaucho.
@@tonyv47 Impossible I'm afraid. I tried to do it, and it sounds ok enough, but it only works for the first verse, because of how different this version is to the finished master tape version, and that's the one I'm emulating. Thanks for the kind words! I'm in touch with this guy for him to lay down the vocals though, so it's going to be close to Fagen I think. ruclips.net/video/as2gAam0eqA/видео.html
@@michaelcaplin8969 agreed thanks for sending the link video , he is pretty close to fagen in vocals just a slight deepening of his vocals would nail it, as for you, great near perfect emulation of steely dan , next is for you & other musicians to be a steely dan tribute band !!
You're also not doing yourself any favors by dancing around whether you think I'm polluting your favorite band (and mine) by suggesting a connection to someone or something you don't care for. Basically you tried to do something that might work in a conversation but just falls flat on the internet. It's boring. Is it worth my time? no, but then again, dinner's not on the table yet...
This song does absolutely nothing for the advancement of the music of this band. It sounds like a composite of the stuff from Katy Lied or Pretzel logic. Pure album filler and nothing else and does NOT 'belong' on Guacho. It would like the Beatles putting 'If you Got Trouble' on Abbey Road..
There's something great about rough Steely Dan demos, like all the greatness comes through even when embryonic and unpolished.
Damn I LOVE that Rhodes' sound!!! Always a favorite!!
It's so sparse, and so early in the stage of production, but it's so f*cking genius.
I LOVE THIS RAW VERSION BETTER….. REAL FUNKY…...
Mee toooo
Hahah same, that funky part is nasty
Wow, a Steely Dan song that sounds like a Todd Rundgren song - how much more perfect does it get than THAT??
Exactly ! I have always loved both Steely Dan and Todd
Which is funny because Todd and Donald have been collaborating: Todd on "Morph the Cat" and Donald on Todd's "White Knight" record.

They weren't released as a compilation, to my knowledge. I was lucky enough to find some of these, from a no-longer existent blog, that featured these upgraded versions of songs from that time period.
When that happened to the beginning of "Celebration Day" by Zep, the assistant fled the studio fearing for his life :)

That little four-chord motif is straight out of Faure's "Libera me"

Is the guy who cues the band before the song the idiot assistant engineer? if it is, he earned a certain type of immortality.
No, that's actually Donald Fagen. He's well known for his intro cues. :P
@bassmanjoe This is true.

evelsteev look on you tube for the version uploaded in June 2011 by morcadin
Dennis Osborne Yeah, I've heard that one. But, even though the recording features a more complete band, the audio is...meh...not as desirable.
I would like to play this song on my acoustic guitar. Seriously!! It's a good song to me.
@BabbleonSistas With the FBI shutting down so many storage sites, it's going to be near impossible. But I'll put up some more soon :)

Interesting, but the full band version that is available elsewhere on youtube is much better in spite of the poor audio quality.

Can somebody post the chords for this?

@OrisLover Knowing Steely Dan, it could have been somebody else. LOL
Was this recorded before or after the "yellow Jag" version?
Before.
apparently 3/4 of this track was accidentally deleted so they focused on another track instead.
I think left/right channels are out of phase
haHAA !!
Well, then that's just depressing...
I mean, do you seriously think I meant it literally? Seriously? Like, do you understand the concept of calling something that sounds really cool 'perfect' when you actually just mean 'really cool'? People do that sometimes, you know.
Unfortunately very, very, very out-of-phase.
