Steely Dan - Kulee Baba

The long-awaited better quality version of the unreleased classic outtake. Notice the lyric change when Donald Fagan sings "I hear there's a bash in Cameroon," as opposed to "New Orleans," as sung in the older version. There are also some directions to the sound engineer regarding the volume of his vocals. For those wondering, the drummer is Jeff Porcaro. Source: www.stevekhan.com/gaucho_steely...
While I love this song, I do understand why it didn't make it to Gaucho. Both musically and lyrically it doesn't match the overall feel of the album. Especially after the incident with The Second Arrangement, and it being replaced by The Third World Man. But this would have been perfect for the Royal Scam. Imagine this being in between Kid Charlemagne and The Caves of Altamira.
Khan: ”it's incredible. Incredible to hear myself alongside Don Grolnick(Rhodes); Chuck Rainey(elec. bass); and the incredible Jeff Porcaro(drums) ”. This is dope. Drummers out there: did Porcaro played RL or just R on this track? If he just played R it makes ”Tom Sawyer” looks easy.
This is ok, but it's not top drawer Dan. Imo
Rick Marotta drums Don Grolnick Rhodes Anthony Jackson bass Rob Mounsey piano Steve Khan guitar chief engineer Roger Nichols
A great song, but you can hear why it didn't make it. It's not Aja or Home at Last. It's like a Leonardo sketch; brilliant by mortal standards, but not the Last Supper!
This song has a "Weather Report" feel. So good!
How did this not get released?!?!?
In my humble opinion, I can see why they cut this. The verse portions are lovely, but the chorus seems off. It kind of falls flat. I know that Steely Dan uses a lot of key changes and unorthodox note progressions, and that's one of the many reasons I like Steely Dan. But in this specific case, it doesn't work. They are perfectionists, after all. Still, not bad.
I agree. The melody seems off. Just like the Return to Forever song 500 milrs high. I love that song but the singing seems off .
It’s been a year since I discovered this. But I swear, when I listen to it, I listen to it at least TEN TIMES IN A ROW !!! It is so unbelievably compelling !!! How I miss the days when a new Steely Dan album dropped. It became your life’s soundtrack.
More like a psycho 😅😅😅😅
Love this one
It’s a grower this 😎👍
dance of death A.K.A. the origins of dubstep dance.
Steve Khan masterclass in rhythm guitar playing
The recording has one channel 180 degree out of phase...
Awesome love the Mistake💕🤗💯
It’s cool as hell listening to Steely Dan music you know less than .1% of the human population is aware of.
Sussssssy baka coming your way every Sunday
Hi, do you sell time machines? Ok, take me to 1980 please. Yep, that's right. Oh just need to tell a man called Donald to stick a bloody brilliant song on a bloody brilliant album. See ya
well said
Cameroon was a very hot club in Portslade no it wasn't
My nom-de-vage is Mexuine I carry the proper papers I seek the primal rhythms of the bush I preserve great moments as they come And sure this must be one Brightly colored dancers on the screen Are no more than a prelude to the ritual unfolding No white man's eyes have ever seen The cruel primeval rite that you're beholding Kulee Baba Coming your way Ev'ry Sunday Live from nowhere Sat'lite relay Hell on Broadway My suit is a bright Irish green The color and cut are striking I'm something of a standout in the crowd Don't chew on that power cable, son I guess I owe you one Bored with my Chief Engineer I'll mix with the mouth for all the folks at home I'm tasting the local beer And half the crew is dancing in the fold [Chorus] [Solo] Sweet holy Jesus, what a night Saint Augustine was right The cam'raman began the Kulee Baba The broadcast was over Our featured friends were gone I hear there's a bash in New Orleans It's a long finale, we must be moving on Moving on... [Chorus]
A bit Stevie wonder
Sounds like something from Nightfly.
true
Hearing this for the first time only a few days ago, Kulee Baba is now my ear worm!! One of the songs you have to get up and dance to!! I would have loved to hear a final version with all of Steely Dan's perfectionism. Their music has stood the test of time and I've been a fan since 1974
man you ever find a song you wish you could just live in?
Yeah I never heard this , sounds great, been listening to them since the beginning!!!!
Peter Erskine's "Teen Town" hi-hat intro... hmm... okay...
As highly as myself and most other Dan fans hold 'The Second Arrangement' in regard, this obscenely funky track has officially become my favorite of their 'Gaucho' demos and outtakes.
I'm just blown away to think that this song did not make the album, really
The phase is driving me mad here
Donald should really revisit this piece and release 'the beast', heck it puts to shame any of the garbage that they pawn as music
What Year did they release this Blessed Timeless track?
Outtake from the Gaucho album from 1980 a real shame that they skipped it🙈
Thank you for posting this!!!
sorry in advance
Still lovin it in 2020
the intro sounds like Weather Report's (Jaco Pastorious written) Punk Jazz
A Bit Weather Report Teen Town Intro?
👍🏿😎
This song, the bear and the second arrangment are amazing really a shame they never got released
A gem!
I’m the only one reminded of Teen Town?
Lack of horns... maybe they’re right about the guy supposed to add the horns ripping these tracks
Thanks for the upload! As a huge fan of the Dan since the beginning of the 70ties, it's a crying shame I never heard this track before. A real Dan song here. The only thing I'm missing is a stunning guitar and/or saxophone solo.
wow porcaro slaying it on this. the whole thing is magical
Rick Marotta not JP listen close it’s not Porcaro
@@79SteelyMattListen closer
Should have been released
Another classically slick, no-holds-barred, syrupy smooth Dan production. My NEW favorite, for now, until his next project. Thank God this was saved from musical oblivion!
Isn't this very similar to "when the world is running down" by the police?
Please Donald, produce It!
How could they scrap this?! Those ghost notes, so good.
Purdie on drums?
Jeff Porcaro.
