Although the audio quality is really bad, I believe this is the closest thing to what Fagen/ Becker intended. There are some great new takes *) on this song, but what I miss the most with these is Donald Fagens voice. *) 2023-07-28 Upload by Scott Sheriff @TNKeys / International Dan Collective
I really love the end of the chorus, leading back into the next verse: they use the same chord towards the end that is in "Deacon Blues". It's a really lovely callback :-) (at about 4:03, for example)
The 2nd Arrangement is the sequel to Deacon Blues. Is it possible that the 2nd Arrangement is the followup to Deacon Blues with Deacon Blues being First Arrangement?
there's an imperfect rhyme between 'girl' and 'world' in the first verse. But I think Donald deliberately pronounces it as worl' to mitigate this. The Broadway songwriters Comden and Green did something similar in New York, New York: New York, New York, a helluva town The Bronx is up, but the Battery's down The people ride in a hole in the groun' Great craft
I just wrote on another comment board that this song reminds me of "The Goodbye Look" from The Nightfly. I think it would have been a great addition on Fagen's first solo album.
@@gethinrees1 Yeah there is something in Larry Carlton's playing in those sessions that totally evokes the summer of '76, sunsets and the whole spirit of the time.
@Dan Steely, this track was accidentally erased by a junior engineer. I have my suspicion on who's "to blame" but I can't confirm it and there's no point in opening a sealed wound by asking them. Here's one of the attempts at re-recording it: lfranke.com/fb3/MonitorMix.mp3 - Fagen and Becker didn't feel compelled to finish it, having lost the "finished product" which can be heard in this video, this being the alledged 79th cassette copy(thus the poor quality). I dig your channel, by the way. Lots of cool, obscure, Dan-related stuff. I hope it's not at risk of being taken down?
Given that this n-generations-down copy exists, I'm guessing the 1/4" 2-track it probably ultimately comes from still exists too. If so t'would be nice if that got an official release of some sort, unfinished though it is.
MC: Mus1c Collection it's actually a warmup take without the horns, supposedly there was an alt take or two Becker and fagen weren't cool with so if the copies exist still is questionable, that said they did perform this song live 4 years ago so maybe
To me this seems like an alternate approach to the song that was abandoned rather than a warm-up. There are backing vocals, almost surely overdubs, including what sound like multiple Donalds. This wasn't knocked out in 5 minutes.
The second erasement
This would've been a highlight on the album
Could've been placed right after 3rd World Man and closed the tracklist

Bruh, they unintentionally made a lo-fi song, epik.
epic moment neon mochi
This would have been an awesome addition to Gaucho. Love it!

That part is fucking beautiful. It makes me cry every time.
This song became a symbol for all that could have been but never was
lo fi Steely Dan. Love it!
I think this is the finished, deleted version since it's got elements typically not added in demos, such as the backing vox
Doesn’t have any solos. I can hear a place for a sax solo. Room toward the end too. It’s built for that, but the solos aren’t in this version.

It sounds like The Nightfly
Same thing I was thinking! Especially the other version!

a little
Great but had it survived there would be no Third World Man and no Larry Carlton guitar solo
MartiW this song is way better than 3rd world man
Third World Man already existed as „Were you blind that day“ before Gaucho
Glad to hear someone feels like I do about that solo! Exquisite in ways I can't describe.
@@ApocalypseNowSE Were You Blind That Day is arguably better than Third World Man and the solo is still there

I wonder, could this be mastered to sound album-worthy?
very cool with tech maybe right. married a long time.we are still dancing...

Alex Darlington could? There are demos included as bonus material on albums that aren't this polished
Alex Darlington See Stan Deely's new revised version. It seems it'll be the best we can get.

I thought it was erased???hehehe
+Bobby Senacud This is actually the 2nd demo. And I find it good enough to be part of their album.

Maybe Walter and Donald had a pun in mind - the second derangement ?
