Man this sounds incredible. Just wish Don would magically toss The Second Arrangement on the end of his upcoming solo project (let me fantasize)

Pour out the wine, little girl
I've got just two friends in this whole wide world
    Here's to reckless lovers
    We all need somebody
    Stashed in the yellow Jag
I've got my life and laundry in a gladstone bag
    You should know the program
Just one red rose and a tender goodbye (one last goodbye)
Then I run to the second arrangement
    It's only the natural thing
Who steps out with no regrets
A sparkling conscience, a new address
When I run to the second arrangement
The home of a mutual friend
Now's the time to redefine the first arrangement again
    It's a sticky situation
    A serious affair
I must explain it to you somehow
Right now, I'll just move back one square
    Here comes that noise again
Another scrambled message from my last best friend
    Something I can dance to
A song with tears in it
    Old friends abandon me
It's just the routine politics of jealousy
    Someday we'll remember
That one red rose and one last goodbye (one last goodbye)
Then I run to the second arrangement
    It's only the natural thing
Who steps out with no regrets
A sparkling conscience, a new address
When I run to the second arrangement
The home of a mutual friend
Now's the time to redefine the first arrangement again

I think the lyric is "...LaRue Steps Out with no Regret...!" referring to Lash LaRue, the classic 40's Cowboy Actor. Probably used to signify the outlaw attitude of the narrator of the song.

Better to love a song that never got released than let a song this good be lost to time

Sterling work sir, I daresay you've now reached the point where, had this track appeared as a bonus unreleased track (a la "Here At The Western World") on one of the many SD compilations of recent years, it wouldn't have sounded at all out of place, so thanks again for your endeavours. The song and it's story continue to fascinate me too; that Don and Walter evidently thought so highly of it puts a lot of pressure on the evidence we have before us. In that sense, it IS a little underwhelming, no horns, repetitive guitar lick (on a Steely Dan record!), but at the same time, it's so perfectly Steely Dan too, a great underlying bounce to the rhythm track, velvety backing vocals and everything else supremely neat and tidy. I'll always suspect that there were further elements to be added, but I couldn't tell you what they might have been. Do you have any thoughts on this yourself @Jive Miguel?

Horns are missing for sure, confirmed by Tom Scott himself who wrote a chart which he no longer has, nor does he remember the parts. The outro guitar maybe sounds a bit of a placeholder for something less repetitive, also perhaps some synthy lines in the breakdown sections, we’ll never really know. I did a version with horns which were written and recorded by another fan, I’ll upload that soon. Personally speaking, I’m glad it never got completed as we wouldn’t have got Third World Man, which I love.

@@JiveMiguel A fair point about Third World Man. Personally, I would take off 'My Rival' off the Gaucho album and put in this track instead. Or, as CDs can contain more information, put this track in SOMEWHERE on the album along with 'My Rival'. It may upset the overall balance but with a little re-shuffling I am sure it would have made an even stronger collection.

What's different in this from the other remaster that's out? BTW; this song rocks on all fronts; so good and sad it never got a proper release.

Probably not much difference, I don’t know which version you’re referring to but I guess this one is longer as I used the instrumental version which has a longer fade out. I rebalanced it as well so it might sound a bit more polished.

I’m in love with Steely Dan! It’s such a pleasure to hear a version that sounds so clean. If this wasn’t deleted it would’ve been a single for sure!! Do you have this on Spotify by chance?
