You've inspired me to rethink my balcony "garden" to look like a garden rather than a garden center display. I'm guilty of impulsively buying plants (recently caudex-type plants) and ending up with too many to care for effectively 🙁 . I'm enjoying your journey and curious about how this garden will shape up!!!😊

I love the perennials with the cacti! I laughed when you said you might have 5 more gardens. I’ve had 5 gardens living in the same house for 22 years. You learn what works and what doesn’t. Gardens are a constant evolution. We are also in a rental but we are going out toes up!! We left everything behind in our last rental of 16 years. It was before succulents. Love listening to your thoughts.

Oh my god I love this! Absolutely, gardens change all the time. Also reminds me of one of my favourite quotes: “To stay in one place and watch the seasons come and go is tanatmount to constant travel: One is traveling with the earth.”

I can see two possible choices for your succulents. The easiest is to go ahead and plant them in the ground, then take cuttings when you have to leave. Even the columnar cactus can have the top two feet cut off and re-rooted in a pot. You might want to keep a lot of your pots stored somewhere out of the way, so you still have them when you need to move. The other alternative is to sink the pots in the ground. I would buy or possibly find for free some well draining soil (not sure if decomposed granite is something sold in Australia), and make a good size berm. If you can get some small boulders or big rocks, that will really make the bed more interesting. Then sink your potted plants into the mound. They will stay smaller, and can be dug up on moving. You can plant cheaper or fast growing things in the soil itself, since you won't feel bad about leaving inexpensive things behind. I am re-landscaping my back yard, and they are bringing in soil via my 36 inch gate with bobcat construction equipment (small, cute bulldozers, backhoes, etc.). So access to your back yard may not be as limited as you fear. As to curating a pot collection, I noticed the pictures you liked showed a variety of plants in pots that were very similar. The consistency of the same pot style, color and shape, helps unite a disparate collection into a pleasing composition (applied art principle here). Have fun designing!

I believe in leaving things better than you found them. And so, when realizing that we reap what we sow, whatever you end up having to leave behind, you will reap accordingly, some time in the future. I'm really excited to see what you do here.❤ from Texas

We, as plant parents, plant enthousiasts, are deeply affected and guided by feeling. Wanting something very much (a plant) is a feeling. Frankly I don't think there is a cure for not feeling as such. That is part of our existence. Experience and reality of things though is what make us understand that we cannot have everything in our garden. I truly wish (dream) I had Balsamorhiza sagittata, Brunsvigia herrei, Coreopsis gigantea, Mentzelia decapetala, Argemone polyanthemos...even Welwitschia mirabilis, that I consider to be one of the most beautiful living things of this world... But I can't have them and its OK. Because I still have plants that I love, native ones, not native ones; from cacti to succellents and from deciduous to evergreens.
You are going to create a beautiful garden in your new home, I hope it lasts for much much longer until the time comes for all your plants that you take care of, will have their forever home. Just wait...soon!

SHY! I'm very proud of you! For who you have become through the years. For being able to let things go. I is very hard to do that. I can't let anything go easy in my garden. Also, I receive any plant donations. Just kidding can't fly to AU and come back with the plants, lol. I wish. Sending you love and hugs ❤ you have become my favorite person on youtube

Oh dear! I am screaming at the TV...😅
I would, if it was me, keep all the plants in containers and cluster them throughout the yard. I could never leave my cactus to someone else who may dig them up and toss them...but you do you❤ love your videos❤

    Happy Sunday Shy ❤️
I love my Nepetas, Salvias, Seaside Daisy's and Gaura in my garden. So hardy and beautiful 🤗
Also my natives like Westringias, Leptospermums, Calistemons, Correa and varieties of grasses.
I have found everything I've bought as Tubestock has performed the best (which is most of what I've planted really 😅)
You'd be surprised how fast they take off too when planted at the right time of year (late winter/early spring) and so much easier on the pocket lol 😅
Looking forward to watching you transform your gardens there. Love hearing you talk about your plans ❤️ Enjoy the week ahead lovely xx

Love your thoughts... going through something similar after moving the plants in for another freeze. I do want to be more intentional about placement when they go back out. and def need to sell/ give some of these plants.

Hi Shy! I am right with you on decluttering in 2025! We have WAY too much stuff. You have such a wonderful attitude about your new yard. I live surrounded by woods on two sides and you're right...trees are magnificent. I am so glad to be along for the ride. We're expecting 8" of snow tomorrow so am enjoying watching you work outside! ❤
