  • With examples and Tabs.
    In this video you will nail the secrets of the Phrygian Mode and Phrygian scale and learn how to put this dark and oriental beauty into daily playing over Phrygian chord progressions and minor chords. I’ll explain everything about this scale and why it’s such a wonderful asset to you your playing routines. You can play this profound sounding Phrygian scale in different situations over different chords. That’s what you will learn in this video by examples in different styles with tablature on screen. Learn also a thing or two about the major 7 arpeggio and a Steve Vai Phrygian signature lick which is awesome to combine with Phrygian scale!
    You can support me on my patreon page (also for tabs of the licks played in this video):

    The use of happy birthday is a perfect example of the tone and mood the mode evokes. Imagine looking at someone and singing happy birthday to them this way. It pulls out nothing but pity, sorrow, and darkness.

    • @QJamTracks

      It brings a very dark and disconnected feeling to this song indeed Argle Bargle. Everybody associates this song with happiness and joy, so the mmod change is even more strinking.

      @@QJamTracks Hey Rob, om een liedje als happy birthday om te zetten in Phrygian, of welke andere mode dan ook, moet je dus de akkoorden van happy birthday vertalen naar de mode degrees van Phrygian? Dus "I" akkoord in happy birthday is ipv "C", nu Em akkoord etc?

    I agree with you Jose. I’ve been playing guitar for a lot of years and went through the whole lead guitar flash thing and many years later I finally realized I can’t play a song from beginning to the end just the rhythm parts. I would rather be a great rhythm player in the band and leave the lead for somebody that’s better at it than myself.

    I am so addicted to your channel. You have a way to explain things that makes it really easy to understand. Most of the other channels just concentrate on soloing and licks, licks, and more licks....which in all reality unless one is a solo performer helps in no way at all. 90% if not 95% of what we play in our band situations is going to be rhythm. Also, I do not understand how is it that many musicians (specially guitar players) concentrate on having good chops and licks and they fail terribly at songwriting...which is a total shame. Sorry for the rant hahaha...but thank you very much for such a great channel and keep up with the excellent lessons!!!

      for songwriting you shouldn't look up guitar with it, although I agree this is probably the best guitarcentric channel for songwriting, I would suggest theory in general or maybe piano. rick beato has excellent and very high level theory lessons, michael new is good if you don't know anything about theory. adam neely is more entertainment than theory sometimes but he also does a great job

    Brilliant. Thank you for this comprehensive study. The many pieces cited bring concrete. We could also quote "For the love of God" but the second minor is not played in the theme. Continue like this, I follow you with great interest.

    • @QJamTracks
      @QJamTracks  4 года назад +1

      Thanks!! I appreciate this. Indeed For The Love Of God has a phrygian twist on the Fmaj7#11 chord. He has skipped the f and f# in the main theme just like you said, except for very last phrase. Also the tonic has a sharpened second (or ninth) degree (f# in Em add9) so the phrygian character is only present when the Fmaj7#11 chord is played. Thanks again Tien for your nice comment :)

    So E Phrygian is basically playing the C major scale in a given E/E minor key?

    • @QJamTracks
      @QJamTracks  Год назад +1

      The Phrygian mode is not a key, but a scale. E Phrygian uses notes from the C major scale. Its an C major scale starting on the 3rd note of the scale. This results in a minor scale with a flattened 2nd degree.
