  • Different liquids can be layered on top of each other based upon their density and with respect to their polarity.
    ▶️ See the supply list to make a density column: www.beardedscienceguy.com/how...
    ▶️ How to make a seven-layer density column:
    Step 1: Start with an empty, tall glass container. The size of your container will determine how many and how much of each liquid to add to form your layers. It's best if each layer is at least 1 inch thick.
    Step 2: Pour honey into the very bottom of the container using a kitchen baster to create the first layer. Be careful not to get any honey on the sides of the container as you add the honey.
    Step 2: In a separate container, mix food coloring with corn syrup (we used yellow), and then add on top of the honey using the baster.
    Step 3: Add dish soap (we used Dawn that was already a green color) using the baster, and again avoid hitting the sides of the container.
    Step 4: In a separate container, mix food coloring with water (we used red). When adding the water layer to the container, change tactics to let the water drip down the side out of the baster instead.
    Step 5: Add a vegetable oil layer in the same way as the water step above. We did not use food coloring in our vegetable oil layer.
    Step 6: In a separate container, mix food coloring with add 91% isopropyl alcohol (we used blue), and add the second-to-last layer via the baster method down the inside wall of the container.
    Step 7: Add lamp oil (we purchased a red oil - food coloring will not mix with lamp oil) as your final layer.
    Step 8: You're now ready to test the density of various objects using the column. We tested a metal screw, a grape tomato, a plastic bottle cap, and a ping pong ball.
    ▶️ How the density column works:
    As you go from top to bottom the layers, become denser and denser, preventing them from mixing together. Different objects will stop at the different layers based on their density, floating suspended in the column.

    Hi +BeardedSchienceGuy! Great videos! Quick question: If I want to make a density column that I after making would want to shake and then have it return to the original layers, what should I use?

    • @pumpklin622
      @pumpklin622 7 лет назад +6

      Sofia Cardozo i know this was a long time ago, but to answer what you said : you could shake it and it would eventually go back to the layers. due to the differences in density it would eventually go back to 7 layers.

    • @BeardedScienceGuy
      @BeardedScienceGuy  10 месяцев назад +1

      Sadly no, if you need to move it to take it to schools there is a three level density column that will separate again after shaking. water, rubbing alcohol, oil of some type, green food coloring and a bunch of salt. You can see it here ruclips.net/video/Db6Ai_4ZetA/видео.htmlsi=y0cy7cSBNgsPsCVL Good luck!!!

    I'm surprised the honey and the corn syrup didn't mix. Why is that?

    • @BeardedScienceGuy
      @BeardedScienceGuy  8 лет назад +1

      +James Craver Two reasons, the first is that honey has a higher density than corn syrup 1.42 g/ml vs 1.37 g/ml. The second reason is that they are extremely viscous liquids and the molecules hang on to each other tightly such that they don't mix easily with other liquids.

    • @dm_nimbus
      @dm_nimbus 8 лет назад

      +BeardedScienceGuy I see. I was thinking of polarity as some binary attribute but it's more complicated than that.

    • @BeardedScienceGuy
      @BeardedScienceGuy  8 лет назад +3

      If I mixed lamp oil and water together really well they would still separate into layers on their own because of polarity. With corn syrup and honey as long as I don't try and mix them together they will stay as separate layers for a while but if stirred them together their polarity would cause them to stay mixed together.
