- Why do people say you shouldn't mix electricity with water? What happens if you do? Let’s find out :) In this video we're experimenting with chemical experiments! In this video we dive into what happens when pool chlorine and Dot 3 brake fluid get mixed together, then talk about the science behind why. We’re taking pool shock chlorine and brake fluid to show you the results of our chemical experiment. What do you think will happen when we mix brake fluid and chlorine? How much heat will it create? Will we see a chemical explosion? Is it safe to mix brake fluid and chlorine? Follow King of Random and Grant Thompson to find out the results of our chlorine experiment!
This chemical project is also great for those wanting to know the properties of chlorine and brake fluid mixed: chlorine and brake fluid recipe, chlorine trifluoride, ammonia and bleach, chemicals, chlorine and brake fluid ratio, mixing ammonia and bleach, brake fluid chlorine, homemade bomb, explosive chemicals, brake fluid, DIY flamethrower, chlorine, dot 3 brake fluid, chlorine pebbles, flames, and much more.

Caution for all those wanting to try this out. Make sure your containers are completely clean and dry. The reaction timing can vary greatly if other contaminants or solvents are present. Many of my friends burnt themselves by using dirty or wet containers and the reaction went a lot quicker than expected.
Thanks mate

I think you should strongly consider an investment in a Phantom high speed camera
It's hard to actually BUY a phantom last I checked. Even IF you can get one the price is completely insane. Depending on the type of rental you do it can even be pretty expensive.
how about the other high speed cam that is kinda cheap
there is a camera, chronos 1.4 it costs $2500 and you can shoot up to 21650fps (1000fps at 1280x1024)
TheSauceGodTV have you seen the cost?!
Always leave the ingredients close to the reaction area.
For the full effect.
What do you expect? He’s not a real chemist!!! I’ll bet he’s reading off a Q card!!😂😂😂
Just so you know, in truth, if he knows that the substance that he's using is combustible, at all he does not leave them anywhere nearby. Since they are not combustible on their own, he doesn't see any danger to it, which sens there is a brick wall there there really isn't any danger. If you can't deal with the fact that he does this for the knowledge of science, tough chit to U.
Now i’m going to start adding chlorine to my coworker’s brake systems!
I know it's a bad idea.. But please cap it try it.. In some deserted place ofcourse... I really wanna see what happens
happyhuzy YH THAT WOULD BE COOL
And put way to much chlorine and brake fluid in the bottle
someone at my school for a volcano tried this in a glass bottle. It explodedpeople got hurt baad

happyhuzy me too
My hypothesis: Since you need oxygen to make a flame I think that the reaction happen faster in open air because its more oxygen in open air than it's in a glass or bottle. So theoretical if you do the experiment in a closed bottle filled with Co2 the reaction won't happen. Test this in a video
Chris Jensen Chlorine is an oxidizer, so it would ignite no matter how little oxygen is in the bottle.
According to the explanation in the video the Chlorine is the oxidizer in the chemical reaction but is not actually what is burning. The reaction between the Chlorine and the Ethylene Glycol is exothermic but is not actually what burns. The flame occurs when the heat build-up in the mixture reaches a point that causes the remaining break fluid and/or the chemicals produced by the reaction to vaporize. This heated vapor then reacts again with the oxygen in the air to produce the flame. As such the oxygen content of the air would be a factor in the ignition but only after the heat of vaporization was reached in the original mixture. So I don't think the oxygen was the reason for the time difference. I would posit that it is possible the stone block the open mixture was placed on was able to store more heat than the plastic or glass containers and thus conserve energy to produce a quicker heat increase. It could also have to do with the way Grant mixed the mixture on the block with his finger which may have produced a more even mixture than the swirl mixing in the containers resulting in more connecting reactions and thus a greater energy build-up.
Chris Jensen So if you give it little bit of liquid oxygen it will go BAM!
The problem with this hypothesis is that it is uninformed of organic chemistry. The gas that is ignited is the aldehydes and other products from the chemical breakdown of the polyethylene glycol. These reactions are sped up through the addition of high energy light, such as UV from the sun.
If you were to look at the open-air reaction, you will see that it was placed in some dappled light shining through the leaves above it. This was the main contributor as to why the reaction was faster. Not to say it didn't have more oxygen, or a greater surface area, or that the brick was warmer, just that these factors wouldn't increase the reaction time so significantly.
This reaction makes Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, and Ethlyene. HrrrPenny is correct, these are what ignite. The reaction WILL happen, as it is independent from oxygen, but could burst the container, and then likely ignite. The flame is not the reaction, but the result of the products of the reaction.
That might be a better way to start an emergency fire in a survival situation instead of matches or those magnesium flint things, although simply carrying a wind-resistant lighter is probably the safest thing.

Brake fluid and chlorine in a pop bottle, I think you reinvented Mountain Dew.
That plastic bottle mixture was such an amazing reaction !!! It like squeezed the bottle like a sponge and pushed out fire !!!!
I kind of want to see what would happen if you put it in a sealed container now
Just stick it in a bottle tighten the lid and throw it like those CO2 bombs that everyone makes with Drano crystals and bleach Gatorade bottles are the funnest to watch explode with the Drano mixture because of all the indentations it's fun to watch them turn inside out the Drano Crystal mixture expands slowly so you get to watch all the spots pop out
Did one in a large 2L glass bottle once... we used to use sugar to slow down the reaction time (oil has to soak through the sugar) put the cap on and ran... it made an extremely ... massive house shaking BOOM!.. do not try in enclosed containers at home........
It'd 'splode
he should fill it up most of the way with chlorine and fill up the rest with brake fluid and screw on the cap
In my experimentation with this (a couple decades ago), it seems that less is more. We were using Gatorade bottles and sealing them and throwing them. A second person poured the brake fluid so the first could cap it quickly, give it a quick shake and throw. The 20oz bottles went as expected, landing on the ground and then popping and burning. The 32oz bottles popped mid-air, raining down the burning clumps much like an artillery White Phosphorus Felt Wedge. (Search RUclips for videos of the felt wedge WP.)
You should do a comparison of chemical firestarters for survival kits, like the glycerin and potassium permanganate. See which one burns hotter and better with smaller concentrations and if they can serve other purposes like purifying drinking water or what not. Like so he can see if you would like to see that plus any other cool methods to start a survival fire using chemicals.

Hey, what about putting the chemicals into a glass bottle, and placing it onto a set of scales, making sure to protect it when the reaction takes place. That way you might be able to see the force its putting out .
You were better than my chemistry teacher
grant you just uploaded this few days ago
Tanish Valecha true bro
Try to make a rocket with this. It should be fun to try.
Isaac Quezada it most likely would not be able to create enough pressure to lift off the rocket, though I might be wrong.
What if it's a glass bottle that is laid on it's side, sliding across would take less force than lifting. Could also try the plastic bottle somehow with holes at the bottom and cap on the top to see if the pressure could lift...?
Oh the possibilities.
Anoni Misfit i wast actually thinking more of a metal bottle, so that it’s more resilient

I was hoping he would keep the cap on, so bummed lol
I think fire needs oxygen tho...
@@davidesfandiary5935 that true but I feel like the chemical reaction would still work well enough to blow the cap and continue
Put it in a glass or metal container, with the lid on!
@@davidesfandiary5935 uh... bro, the chlorine gives off oxygen during the reaction to feed the fire. It can and will go exo in a sealed container. Enough to make a decent explosion for sure and it would definitely do more than just blow the cap off.
That's why chemical fires are sometimes left to just burn themselves out. You can't suffocate it with foam or anything. It'll just keep burning under it because it creates its own oxygen and feeds the fire, like a completely self contained "living" fire.
Your videos r the best Grant!
Whoa..that was so McGyver! The one out the open had more oxygen feed. That's probably why it ignited quicker.
MacGyver :)

Hello! If you mix Kalium Permagnat (sorry I don't know exact name of it, its purple powder that colors the water red and is used for cleaning wounds) with brake oil - the liquid used in this video you will cause a HUGE explosion that can melt SOLID ROCKS. The red color is from calcium. If you grind the granules to a fine powder, you might get a faster reaction time. Potassium permagnate, or any strong oxidizer, also works pretty well.

*should've......not "should of".
Can you take several chemical reactions (Chlorine/brake fluid and baking soda/vinegar and some others) and make bottle rockets/cars and see which flies highest/ goes farthest? Thanks!
It seems to me that the reaction times may be different due to the difference in ratios of the two chemicals. He did not use measured amounts and the one he did on the brick had much less brake fluid which may be why it reacted quicker. Just a thought.
Actually, it has to do with the amount of available oxygen. The ignition (should) be faster with more available oxygen. However, it also has to do with the amount of brake fluid to chlorine ratio.
what would be the reaction if you used sodium hypochlorite.
Would it be an instant reaction.

what do you think would happen if you mix brake fluid and chlorine and freeze the mixture with liquid nitrogen right after you mix them ??

Cold slows down reactions so it should ether be less violent, or not do anything ti;l iot thaws

Not sure if you can get concentrated liquid chlorine, but there was a time when we made the no-light molotov cocktails where we had the brake fluid in one glass bottle and the brake fluid in another and the two bottles capped and tapped to each other. You could then throw it to break together and within a half minute or less the mixed items would ignite. We even used a sling to shoot it further.

Very Pyro-centric. Loved it!
Adding more big words helped me understand.
When you put it more out in the open, I honestly wasn't surprised that the reaction didn't take as long. After all, earlier in the video, you said it was a simple combustion reaction. And what do all combustion reactions need? Oxygen. So maybe putting it out in the open allowed more oxygen for the reaction to take place, therefore increasing the speed of the reaction?
Yeah, I was confused when he said that too. Oxygen is the meat and potatoes of any combustion reaction.

Our experiments with this show that the start of the reaction is highly variable by ambient temperature. We usually do this at 80+F and it happens in a minute or two, sometimes as little as 30 seconds. But one year we did it at about 50 and it took over 5 minutes for the reaction to happen.

If you would dip a speaker in Liquid Nitrogen how long would it still work for???
like I want to see that
Ernestas Valentinas .. i would say put a speaker facing up and put liquid nitrogen in the dish
u will get a superconductive speaker
staberas not only that the speaker will probably catch on fire/blowup depending on what kind of speakers. since there aren't any resistance in the circuit the voltage going through the circuit would increase and thus overloading
The open air reaction occuring faster is actually normal. It has more surface so the compounds react with dioxygen faster.
I had different plans for today. Now, I'm headed straight to the auto parts store, and pool supply. Other errands can wait!
another thing, HTH (which is what that pool sanitizer stuff is, another name for calcium hypochlorite) will rust ANYTHING that the fumes come into contact with. so if youre going to do this yourself, keep it away from any metals or in a tightly sealed container
I learn more stuff watching RUclips videos and reading the comments section then I ever learned in school
"Never put your finger in a reaction mixture - they may ignite."
A second later ... DOES EXACTLY THAT.
