- In this video, we will discuss a unique practice of witnesses taking an oath by the Gita or any other sacred text before giving evidence. The Courts used to keep various Holy Religious Books and depending on the Religion of the eyewitness, he had to take an oath of his religious book and then proceed with the trial.
This started happening during the Mughal period where it was believed that if Indian took oath on their holy book , they are less likely to lie on the stand. the same practice was adopted by Britishers by enacting the Indian Oaths Act, 1873.

However, following the recommendations of the Law Commission`s 28th Law Report, the Oaths Act of 1873 was revamped into Oaths Act, 1969. This act was more secular and uniform in its approach and therefore the practice of taking oath from one's religious book was done away with.
Also, giving false evidence is a punishable offence under Section 193 of the IPC.

@@xijinping4960 Hlo Mr. Xi Jinping...accha laga ye jaan kr ki aapko India k laws mein itna interest, but lagta h aapko kisi ne galat btaya h....bcoz as far as I have read...Britishers introduced The Indians Oath Act, 1873 which brought a uniform system for oath, but even after that some high courts like Bombay HC used to follow old tradition....so finally, The Oaths Act, 1969 was introduced making a uniform system for all...thank u itna keemti waqt nikalne k reply krne k liye!!❤️

The offenders brought to the court of the Maharaja, while the Raja Mantri explains the offence, the better judgement *in accordance to Dharmashastra* was left to the Maharaja after the offenders have received the opportunity to present their defence. By the way taking oath on Srimad Bhagvad Gita is nothing wrong as it is in reality Neeti Shastra along with all others compressed into a short format by Bhagwan Shri Krishna 🙏 Jai Shri Krishna Jai Mata Bharat 🇮🇳
