  • Lenticular clouds are also known as lenticularis because they are shaped like a lens. They are common over mountains where air is forced to rise and sink, forming smooth clouds above the mountains and downwind of the mountains. When found over fast-growing cumulus or cumulonimbus clouds, lenticularis are also known as pileus clouds.
