- Gran Turismo. Need For Speed. Dirt. And yes, Mario Kart. These aren’t just some of the best-selling racing video games of all time, they’re some of the best-selling games, period. The evolution of car racing games is full of innovation and gimmicks, hits and flops-- just like the history of cars themselves. So how did we get from dots on a screen to the photo-realistic simulations of 2020? And what are the specific games-- from the arcade to artificial intelligence-- that blazed that trail? Join James, Nolan, and Joe as they answer those questions and more, today on Past Gas!

I still playing gran turismo 4 on my ps2, love van halen's panama intro
I recently got that one need to check it out!
Yeaaah
Gran Turismo 3. Played ALWAYS in my R33 GT-R and then I thought I want one in real life...
20 years later and alot of money later I have my Mazda MPS 😂😂😂😂
Hahahahaha hell yeah dude!
I know it's not a car racer. But star wars pod racer was so iconic back in my childhood. That game was epic and I would love to see that remade today
Did you see they remastered/rereleased it on GoG?
“John Jacobson...no relation to Jingleheimer-Schmitt”
Hey, I had that TV! That's what I get being about James and Joe's age. I remember playing racing games like Pole Position or Indy on big floppy discs at school in the 90s. Computer class Apple IIe's and a nun teaching us DOS programming. When we weren't busy with Oregon Trail! Slightly before Cuisin' USA, not much though.
Nice Gibson SG Nolan!!
Need for Speed and Hotwheels brought me into the world of the automobile.
Same
Hell yeah, just in time - I was about to do some dishes. Thanks, Donut!
How many dishes u got ? 😂
@@dreamwarden quite a few of them, but not enough for the whole podcast lol
@@lucassanches3568 godspeed
I did my dishes while listening to this too!
Great series for a Gen Xer like myself. I've been alive for nearly all of this topic.
When I grow up, I want to play video games again.
Yooo playing Outrun on sega was the very first introduction of cars in my life and it’s probably why I love 90s cars so much
I once lost a 24 hour race on Gran Turismo 3 in a Mazda RX-8 LM Edition because I ran out of gas. Talk about bad pit strategy lol.
Forza Motorsports is where I started turning off all hud display and using the gauges it's amazing how far we've come
“I just ended up doing the underground bass line “ *he did 3 of the same note that sounds like nothing * Love you guys.
Pole Position is one of my all time favorite games. Has been since it came out and the show was hilarious, although it did have a badass theme song
That was the first racing game I played...but I was very little and it was a friends Atari. Rad Racer on NES was first racing game I owned and played frequently.
I was just gonna say.. I still remember the show’s theme song! Pole positio-ooooonnnnn” lol
Just started my shift at work, this will make my day much better!!! Racing games are by far my favorite genre, starting with Rad Racer (Highway star in Japan) when I was a little kid
The MotoGP games are underestimated, and definitely so in the case of Tourist Trophy aka Gran Turismo for Bikes.
Pole position was such a big part of me getting into cars. That game is still so fun
This episode should be exclusive on youtube. You'll miss alot if you just listen to it
This episode was definitely the "rip on Nolan" episode 🤣🤣🤣
Back in 87 and 88 I dumped a ton of quarters in Spy Hunter. A great mix of racing with guns and missles. The mid 90s also gave us the decendant of Death Race. Carmageddon had all the open world driving with the fun of running over pedestrians.
"Seeggaaa"
No it’s SEGA!!!!
Great topic you guys, really looking forward to listening to this! Gran Turismo forever!
That was great. Can't wait until next week. Gran Turismo 2 what a game.
This is the Past Gas that I've been waiting for, and i didn't even know it. Yeah boys!! FIRED UP!!!
Outrun Coast 2 Coast and Ridge Racer were some of my favorites growing up. That and all the old PC need for speed games. If I ever buy an arcade machine it would 100% be Outrun.
Finally a heck of a podcast topic
Pole position on Atari is the first console racing game I remember playing as a little little kid. The first console racing game I liked was Rad Racer on NES. I still have fond memories of Rad Racer.
Polygons did a lot for racing games. The transition period is a big differentiator between classic games and modern games and the line is often drawn there between PC and consoles.
On one hand we had insane fun playing sprite based games like Top Gear 2 and mario kart while on the PC it was obvious that a game like Stunts was going to get refined to a point where it would be the standard so we should enjoy sprites while they last.
Then Virtua Racing hit the arcades and shortly after Daytona USA, the Playstation whipped out Ridge racer, Need for Speed landed on the 3DO then PC, etc. By the time 1994 rolled around 16 bit consoles were desperate. Virtua racing on Genesis, Stunt race FX on SNES. Polygons were taking over for good.
But for that period where sprite based racing games and polygonal racing games coexisted, the variety in gameplay and graphics was great and a lot of innovation happened.
I am so happy you guys are in dirt 5 keep up the great vids
James is right! Rally X theme is a slapper! Used to play that with my dad as a kid on the PS1 Bandai Namco collection
The laundry mat in my hometown still has a contra game
Day 90 of asking James to do an uptospeed on himself
He’s not a car
Considering that series has been put on hold you’re going to be asking for a while
@@ItsCalledAMotorRaceToto He's done up to speeds on things that aren't just cars
@@ItsCalledAMotorRaceToto Everything you need to know, to get Up yo speed, on RICHARD, PETTY, or CARROLL, F@$&*#/, SHELBY!!! Ever heard of 'em?
I came up playing pole position at Wizard's arcade on 8 mile rd. in East Detroit in the late 80's. My cousin had that F1 simulator on his PC but he would never let me play it. Gran Turismo changed my life. But nowadays it's all about Forza Motorsport
a video about all the bat mobiles would be cool
Honestly believe you doubled the quality of this podcast by inserting related images throughout
But they didn't do it throughout. They did it like 3 times. I felt like it was missing images of important stuff. Meanwhile the camera editor seems lost. No pics of SEGA games, but we got an image of an embarrassing Sonic themed marketing stunt?
Has anyone played atari's race drivin'?
Released in 1990, I believe it was the first racing game to have an ignition key, clutch pedal and a gated shifter.
You needed to push the clutch in to start the car and when shifting. This game taught me the basics of driving manual transmissions.
Man I miss that game!
You 3 are straight gold. Playing gran tourismo 7 and loving this vid. New sub here. Love from Buffalo, NY!✌️
Been playing forza since forza 1 OG! But was playing pole position when I was growing up with ole dad!
Rally X was the first racing game I ever played. and Those red cars were freaking ruthless.
Heck yeah playing forza right now
Me too
Heck yeah playing poll position right now
@@greysenharrington7058 Nice
@@realmaster676 yea I got it on plug and play
@@greysenharrington7058 True
nolan should've yelled sega
Agreed
Dude, that outro from James was pretty clever 👌
My first racing game was Need For Speed Undercover (Wii/PS2 Version), essentially a reskinned Most Wanted.
The current game I love to play is Forza Horizon 4, and it features Matt's Corvette C6 Formula Drift car with the Donut sticker on it!
Sim Racers like Forza and Gran Turismo I GOTTA use the front bumper cam, it makes apex’s and turns easier to see. The 3rd person can from GTA I like for Arcade Racers like NFS UG and Midnight Club. Never been a fan on of inside cam views lol idk why
I thought I watched this at the time, but I must have been thinking of the Up To Speed episode. This was great!
I wonder what they think of Dirt 5 now that it's out. Or the ol' Gran Turismo vs Forza battle, now that they both have new entries.
I remember POLE POSITION the cartoon (I'm also in my mid 40s)! It had one of the sweetest intro tracks of all time.
Now I'm going to see if RUclips has it kicking around...
YES IT DOES!!!!

Great podcast guys, grew up playing most of the games talked about here, Pole position, outrun, etc. But sad to say some greats where left out- road blasters, great arcade game. And I noticed no saga dreamcast games where mentioned. Before Gran Turismo there was saga gt. There was also test drive le mans where you could run the le mans circuit for up to 24hrs. with all pit stops and weather changes. And also saga rally which was also released on Dreamcast
I dont know where i was when this released but i am for sure going to watch pt 2 and 3
I remember having Ford Simulator on floppy disk as a kid and falling in love with the Ford Probe and Thunderbird. Then got NFS Hot Pursuit and learned the Probe and T Bird weren't really that fast.
Pole position on the actual Atari was my first ever racing game. Still holds up for what it is 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I've been waiting for this pod cast since day one.
Lol they're mentioning successful Kart Racers and CTR isn't mentioned but Garfield karting is.
That cuts me deep boys.
Gran Turismo was the first game I ever got back on the original PlayStation good times I still love the midnight purple skyline
You rally-x and poll position sent me back to my childhood (im not old btw lol) when I used to play it on a plug and play game
Headbangin to the first videogame soundtrack yalllll
Cant believe super offroad didnt get mentioned. Best arcade racer ever
250 megabytes, it should download in like a minute.
Laughs in 90s/early 00s dail up.
Sit down Night Driver arcade machine was nuts when I was a kid.
Nice to hear
The Honda CRX in Juiced is my favourite game car ever
That car slept on!
@@vladixpp it was the best car I had 😂 I ended up with like 5 for all different classes 😂
I can't wait for the next one
Favorite episode so far!
Please do a podcast on the Argentinian IKA Torino car and the 84 hours Nürburgring endurance race. Also a podcast on Fangio
YOOOO GREAT EPISODE BUT WHEN IS THE SOICHIRO HONDA EPISODE COMING
I'm playing a Gran Turismo 2 endurance race as I watch this
My first racing game was from 1989 called The Duel Test Drive 2, you could blow the engine lol you guys should look it up it was great!
That thumbnail is a work of art
Just got dirt5 and love it!!
Why no 3 hour episode? I'd watch
No mention of Ivan Stewart's Off Road? That game was ubiquitous.
I’m actually surprised that I was not able to find the donut stick on need for speed heat
No #boostcreeps #buffhorses #hrsprs
sponsor stickers in Dirt 5?? Missed that one guys
28:38 Nooooo you guys should've let him keep going lmao
Still waiting to hear that black epi sg make some nosie nolan
I’ll say up here in Canada we still in 90’s era lol we still have arcade areas but they don’t do quarters anymore it’s a card now a days
Fun fact: the 1st movie Ron Howard ever directed was a car movie called Grand Theft Auto.
I remember going to the local internet cafe in the early 2000s to play NFSU...
Pretty funny how I'm listening to a podcast about racing games, while playing a racing game. I'm playing Forza Horizon 4 btw
The Detail Geek said in his latest video that he is subbed to Donut, and he watches your videos!!
Dudes, no Ivan Stewart Off Road? Multi racer arcade game! Game was legendary. Nitro Nitro Nitroo
18:10 and death race came out as movies aha crazy
Cant wait for you guys to be talking about how the bleeding edge of racing and the bleeding egde of sim gaming are intertwined and can sorta end a drivers career or maybe start one? Jimmy broadbents sim racing channel comes to mind.
Bro in playing need for speed underground rn😳
James mustache looks like two Buffalo head butting
Hell Yes
Two missed games that I think should have been mentioned. Excitebike and Ivan Stewart’s off road!
Heh heh nolan trolling jimmy P like a BAAWWSSS
Pod, and GTR2 where my favoured.
I remember the roll of celefane road games
Yoooooo! Tito the arcade company and Tito's vodka are the same company?!?!
Still waiting for that Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed sequal.
Don't think i have ever seen another human that doesn't own the same IKEA shelf. You know the one.
Once again asking for an up to speed on the Oldsmobile 442 or Hurst/Olds
Yes. The 80s versions.
@@joshuagibson2520 and it would be cool to get a bumper2bumper on the Hairy Hurst Olds or the Oldsmobile Aerotech
Since Playstation has Gran Turismo and Xbox has Forza, I would love to see Nintendo make their own first party realistic racing sim. It probably won't happen, since Nintendo doesn't prioritize power in their consoles, but it would be cool.
He means CO-LEE-CO Vision.
NFS most wanted set off my love for cars.
8:30...2 words Joe, immune system
James dancing xD
James’ New York accent isn’t the greatest but I still love the podcast!
Also try do a bumper to bumper on the panoz gtr1
