    3. ”Great white buffalo” from ”Dogs of war” -95
    4. ”Conquistador” from ”Metalhead” -99
    5. ”Battle cry” from ”Rock the nations” -86
    6. ”Sailing to America” from ”Ceusader” -84
    7. ”Midas Touch” from ”Power and the glory” -83
    8. ”One step away” from ”Forever free” -92
    9. ”State of grace” from ”Inner sanctum” -07
    10. ”The devil’s footprint” from ” Battering ram” -15

First saw Saxon in a club in Hartlepool in August 1979. Only a handful of us there knew who they were, and we stood a few feet from the tiny stage with our beers in our hands, soaking up those tunes from the first album. Good times.

Saxon are one of my all time favorite bands and the most consistent metal band ever in my opinion. I absolutely adore their newer albums. They are just as good if not better than their classic material. Power Metal at it's finest.
    My deep track picks:
    1. Fire in the Sky
    2. Thin Red Line
    3. Rock is Our Life
    4. State of Grace (possibly my favorite Saxon song)
    5. Sons of Odin

I’ve seen Saxon a few times since ‘83.
The last time was in 1995 at a tiny venue just north of London.
In Hemel Hempstead! Saxon at their lowest ebb. Honestly, there was about 50 people there, but they played like there was 10,000!! They were superb. Quite drunk, I jumped on stage!!!... escorted very nicely off by a friendly security guy who saw the funny side! After the show, Me and a friend somehow found the Saxon dressing room (via a kitchen?!?!)....Biff was a total gentleman and gave us a few minutes of his time. Great memories... long live the mighty Saxon!!!

    1. Sea of Life (an underrated lengthy epic pseudo-ballad from one of my favorite albums, I could maybe get five picks from just Metalhead alone; very strong melodies and chord progressions.)
    2. This Town Rocks (not very ambitious, but I think that dual guitar rhythm is pure magic!)
    3. State of Grace (the opening track off Inner Sanctum, it was played on a few tours but was dropped quickly with the constant onslaught of new albums... Note the mesmerizing intro and amazing verse riff, the heaviness blended with elegance... This should still be in their set!)
    4. No Rest for the Wicked (a short and sweet bludgeon of a song that seems a little forgotten... Great riffs and solo here... A Call to Arms is another one of my favorite albums.)
    5. Ministry of Fools (just one of those songs from Saxon that manages to sound both badass and benign at the same time... also kinda anti-political with finesse, it's meant to send the message and still sound good...)

Such a prolific band. I got on board pretty late as Metalhead was the first album I bought and then Lionheart. Love those albums to death and still play them regularly. This was a great episode because they have soooo many records (22 I think) that it's pretty hard to get into more of their deep cuts. I also have a really shitty "greatest hits record" that does them no justice at all. For some reason I always compare Saxon to the Pretty Maids, not because they sound alike, but because of how prolific and underrated both bands are (also their singers kind of look alike hehe), but mainly because their latest records really kick ass. Perhaps a ranking of Pretty Maids, Pete?

Loved Saxon in the early eighties but lost tracks after Destiny when it comes to albums. Heard a song now and then but in 2011 I finally saw my old heroes on the Call to arms tour and wow. They were so good and they played a good mix of old and to me anyway new songs. Specially liked the title track Call to arms and Lionheart as I recall.

Nice! The only things I've ever owned from them are "Denim and Leather", "Solid Ball of Rock", and "Lionheart" (Edit: yes, I have the lanyard, too!), so I have some room for expansion in my Saxon section. I'll have to make a playlist of the songs you guys recommend.
    Thanks, Pete & Chris!

Hi all, I am not sure, but I think a lot of the listeners here are from the US; but there is a big difference between there and England or Europe. For example, while Deep Purple isn't that big there, here it's an amazing huge act (ve heard that in Russia and the former eastern block they are as famous as the Beatles). Their new LP Whoosh reached no 1 in Germany, no 4 in UK for example, but only 161 in the US.
Same goes for the NWoBHM scene, not in that huge base, but it shows the same situation; Saxon, Diamond Head, Gillan, Tygers of Pan tang, Angel Witch, Samson and the more obscure groups had more recognition in England as in the States; only Leppard and Maiden become global acts. So Saxon is well reviewed here, headlined huge tours and festivals in Germany as well. Sadly not in the US, where they play small venues or clubs, together with acts like UFO in a rotation of headlining.

Agreed. Just a few months ago, Planet Rock Magazine did a 1980:Greatest Year in Rock cover story and they put Saxon on the cover alongside Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Ac/Dc, UFO and Ozzy. They get name-checked quite often.
