Saxon kicks ass! I love all their classic tracks but haven't really dived deeper into their catalogue so I have to check some of these songs out. Such a prolific band. I got on board pretty late as Metalhead was the first album I bought and then Lionheart. Love those albums to death and still play them regularly. This was a great episode because they have soooo many records (22 I think) that it's pretty hard to get into more of their deep cuts. I also have a really shitty "greatest hits record" that does them no justice at all. For some reason I always compare Saxon to the Pretty Maids, not because they sound alike, but because of how prolific and underrated both bands are (also their singers kind of look alike hehe), but mainly because their latest records really kick ass. Perhaps a ranking of Pretty Maids, Pete?
Midnight Rider (Denim & Leather) Just Let Me Rock (Crusader) Battle Cry (Rock The Nation) Calm Before The Storm (Destiny) Lights In The Sky (Solid Ball Of Rock) Hole In The Sky (Forever Free) Ministry Of Fools (Unleash The Beast)
Loved Saxon in the early eighties but lost tracks after Destiny when it comes to albums. Heard a song now and then but in 2011 I finally saw my old heroes on the Call to arms tour and wow. They were so good and they played a good mix of old and to me anyway new songs. Specially liked the title track Call to arms and Lionheart as I recall.
Ive seen Saxon countless time over the yrs.. My most prized possesion is the King Biscuit Flower Hour from Norman OK. During the Power And The Glory Tour.. Most recently saw them open for UFO @ Gas Monkey in Dallas Tx.. I love UFO.. But Saxon blew them off stage..
Nice! The only things I've ever owned from them are "Denim and Leather", "Solid Ball of Rock", and "Lionheart" (Edit: yes, I have the lanyard, too!), so I have some room for expansion in my Saxon section. I'll have to make a playlist of the songs you guys recommend. Thanks, Pete & Chris! Any chance of a Golden Earring Deep Cut Dive? I love their whole catalog.
Hi all, I am not sure, but I think a lot of the listeners here are from the US; but there is a big difference between there and England or Europe. For example, while Deep Purple isn't that big there, here it's an amazing huge act (ve heard that in Russia and the former eastern block they are as famous as the Beatles). Their new LP Whoosh reached no 1 in Germany, no 4 in UK for example, but only 161 in the US. Same goes for the NWoBHM scene, not in that huge base, but it shows the same situation; Saxon, Diamond Head, Gillan, Tygers of Pan tang, Angel Witch, Samson and the more obscure groups had more recognition in England as in the States; only Leppard and Maiden become global acts. So Saxon is well reviewed here, headlined huge tours and festivals in Germany as well. Sadly not in the US, where they play small venues or clubs, together with acts like UFO in a rotation of headlining.
Agreed. Just a few months ago, Planet Rock Magazine did a 1980:Greatest Year in Rock cover story and they put Saxon on the cover alongside Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Ac/Dc, UFO and Ozzy. They get name-checked quite often.
When Pete’s dog growled I thought what’s going here ? This was an interesting show because I really like classic Saxon but my knowledge of their later output is zilch 🇬🇧
Because (most of the time) i prefer melodic hard rock above heavy metal i adore 'Innocence is no excuse' and 'Destiny' while for many it's their worst period.

Great show...
SAXON for life!!!!
Midnight Rider (Denim & Leather)
Just Let Me Rock (Crusader)
Battle Cry (Rock The Nation)
Calm Before The Storm (Destiny)
Lights In The Sky (Solid Ball Of Rock)
Hole In The Sky (Forever Free)
Ministry Of Fools (Unleash The Beast)
Everything off of Lionheart (2004)! My favourite album of theirs by far.
@Sea of Tranquility there was a Top 10 and Deep Cut Dive for Saxon, Will there be a Ranking the Albums anytime soon?
Not likely-I'm still missing a bunch of their albums.
One of my very favorite metal bands saw them front for priest in 2018 firepower tour @modo center Portland Oregon!
Nighthunter from the Forever Free album. One of my favorite Saxon songs.
Saxon have always been one of my favorite bands. What a real shame that they never made it big like Maiden and Priest. But that's life sometimes.
Don’t know how much of a deep cut it is but All Guns Blazing from Metalhead is probably my all time fav Saxon song
Thanks for doing this Pete. Any chance you could do one of these for Edguy? They are my second favorite band...
Invasion of the dog @ 19:16 - ha - awesome
Terminal Velocity
Redline
Ballad of the Working Man
Burning Wheels
Night of the Wolf
Their cover version of Sweet’s Set me free is fantastic!!!!
Funny thing about Saxon is that some of their lesser material was from the 80s, and some of their best is from the 90s and 2000s. Thats rare.
Ballad of the Working Man
Deeds of Glory
Sea of Life
The Thin Red Line
Watching the Sky
Tygers of Pan tang and Samson were great. The Tygers got pretty big at one point with The Cage. , but the success stopped when John Sykes left them.
@@grahamtaylor8912 isn't that big I stated.. Smoke on the Water is claimed to be the most famous song for US people
@@LuchaLibertaria where is the Rainbow?
@@laurenzgraffilpenstein8117 I guess Rainbow isnt there bcs they didn't release any albums in 1980.
Rock stage sets is a great idea for a show.

Great show.
Bring back Butch Jones!
Only own Lionheart and The Inner Sanctum on CD: 1. Witchfinder 2. Attila the Hun
Lionheart album is deff one of the best.
Great band . My favourite albums are Denim And Leathe and Wheels of Steel.. I can´t remember the names of many songs i would probably pick.
I'd stack up Saxon's output over the last 20 years against anyone's. Criminally underrated band
Pete I think your dog is a venom fan from those growls
You should put a pinned post on top with the songs you picked 🙂
How about some Danzig album Ranking and Deep Cuts?
Deeds of Glory
Kingdom of the Cross
Nighthunter
Sniper
Midas Touch
Your dog is upset that you didn't pick "Midas Touch" from Power and the Glory. 😂
Rank the albums by Extreme. Pete only 5 albums my man 👍🏻
When Pete’s dog growled I thought what’s going here ? This was an interesting show because I really like classic Saxon but my knowledge of their later output is zilch 🇬🇧
She wasn't growling, that's just Siberian husky talk.
Because (most of the time) i prefer melodic hard rock above heavy metal i adore 'Innocence is no excuse' and 'Destiny' while for many it's their worst period.
Those aren't terrible by any means. Just an ill fated attempt at AOR.
Pete are you a Springsteen fan?
I dig some of his old stuff and The Rising.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Thats awesome man I'm a huge fan of your channel you taught me so much about music as i'm only 16 years old and dig 70s 80s hard rock usual for someone my age, keep up the job work buddy :)
State of grace
Kingdom of the cross
English man of war
Walking the steel
Demolition alley
Hold on
Thin red line
Battalions of Steel
Jericho Siren

Miss the old Saxon. Stewe Dawson-great bassplayer and most important,a good songvriter. Graham Oliver- great guitarist. Sorry but i lost them after innocence is no excuse. Still music is good but i lay the money on other albums.
Same here, Oliver/Quinn seem to be the overlooked classic guitar duo among metal legends but they were always my faves.
Taking Your Chances
Sixth Form Girls
Hungry Years

@@LarryFleetwood8675 great list!!!
It was anything after “Power and the Glory” for me.
@@planet6393 last strong and memorable LP from the original ones..
Rank the Black Crowes
You can post this on every single video all you want, but it won't change the fact that as I've stated many times here, all I have is a Black Crowes compilation, so I won't be ranking their albums.
Sea of Tranquility No probs mate. Thanks for replying
