Couldnt agree more - just becaus Ozzy disses this and Technical Ecstacy they get a bit overlooked, though those are in my top 5 BS albums with Technical Ecstacy at no 1

Some of my favourite Sabbath deep cuts: Ozzy era: Solitude, Cornucopia, Under the Sun, A National Acrobat, Spiral Architect, Killing Yourself to Live, The Writ, Megalomania, Thrill of it All, Gypsy, All Moving Parts, Air Dance, Junior's Eyes, Zeitgeist, Damaged Soul Dio era Lonely is the Word, Die Young, Lady Evil, Slipping Away, Country Girl, Master of Insanity, Too Late, Time Machine Gillan era Disturbing the Priest, Hot Line, Born Again, Trashed (Pretty much the whole album!)
The whole Headless Cross album and especially the gorgeous Nightwing. + Airdance off the Never Say Die. Hard Life To Love was a great choice from Martin.
"She's gone" I think is an amazing overlooked ballad imo. Ozzy sings with so much heart and emotion on that song. Incredible string arrangements and beautiful acoustics by Iommi
@Donovan Davis same here the only song i could to without is break out other then that the album is not bad as the majority of sabbath fans think it is.
@@giladschwinger939 Despite it can be a well-known and loved song by many sabbath fans, I have never heard a live version of it either seen it on any compilation album. So, I think it could be considered as a deep cut.
@@giladschwinger939 Yeah it's well-known for true Sabbath fans but this list is meant for those who only know the big hits like Iron Man, Paranoid, Heaven and Hell etc. But I understand, it's well-known amongst Sabbath fans.
@Josh Tyler Yeah I mean it's a single and has a video but no one really talks about it. It got shadowed by other songs from that album and it was played only once in a concert. Despite the fact that it's a single and has a video IMO it's a deep cut for sure.
Great band, managed to catch them during "The End" tour, and it was totally worth it! Every album has got some underrated gems, so here's one from every album! Firstly, what a great podcast and never a better topic. Can I say ‘Country Girl’ is not a deep cut. It is up there with the gold standard of Sabbath. ‘Arguably’ their most catchy song. The riff, the melody, the bridge 🌉 , the romanticism. Just timeless. Congrats on the Hot Line folks! Probably the most party 🎉 song on the Sabb’s discography. Great work guys. Honourable mentions.. Same here, Martin, ‘Sabotage’ is in my top two favorite metal albums ever, along with Number Of The Beast. Just amazing, mind-bending, trippy, heavy, evil, etc. Astounding compositions. Love it!
5) Nightwing ~ Headless Cross 4) Seventh Star ~ Seventh Star 3) The Shining(feat. Ray Gillen) ~ Eternal Idol (Deluxe Edition) 2) The Writ ~ Sabotage 1) Lonely Is The Word ~ Heaven and Hell

Great show! Lots of great deep cuts from Sabbath. 1) Hotline (Ian Gillan is amazing on this. Awesome riffs!) 2) Looking For Today (I just love this song) 3) Megalomania 4) Under The Sun (That riff just slays me every time) 5) Junior's Eyes 6) Supernaught 7) Behind the Wall of Sleep 8) Sign of the Southern Cross (The best song of the Dio era, in my opinion) 9) Danger Zone (Very underrated) 10) Zero The Hero (Again, that main riff just slays me. Killer, doomy track)
It's hard to chose from the early Ozzy Era such as their self titled debut, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Here are my picks 1. A Bit of Finger/Sleeping/Warning (S/T Debut, 1970) 2. Planet Caravan (Paranoid, 1970) 3. Lord of this World (Master of Reality, 1971) 4. Tomorrow's Dream (Vol. 4, 1972) 5. Spiral Architect (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, 1973) 6. Am I Going Insane (Radio)/The Writ (Sabotage, 1975) 7. Back Street Kids (Technical Ecstasy, 1976) 8. Shock Wave (Never Say Die, 1978) 9. I Witness, Cross of Thorns, and Dying for Love (Cross Purposes, 1994) 18. Zeitgeist (13, 2013) I don't own 'Forbidden' (1995) regardless of what fans think of that album, I will buy this at some point.
Nice choices. My five would be ... 1. Air Dancer - Love that jazz breakdown with Airey and Iommi 2. Turn Up the Night 3. Born Again 4. Heat Like a Wheel 5. Anno Mundi - the only one that sounds like Sabbath of these five, but such a killer lead off track.
Megalomania is probably my favorite Sabbath song. There aren't many 9 minute songs I can listen to over and over on repeat, but the way the song builds and builds keeps it constantly interesting.
I think The Writ is epic. I know when Sabotage came out we did acid every weekend for a month listening to it Germany. One morning while walking outside of post in a rural park we were tripping listening to it (carrying a boom box) and were buzzed by two F-4 Phantoms...I think we almost shit our pants.

Totally agree with Martin regarding the Eternal Idol album, I really really dig it. And totally agree with Pete regarding the Born Again album. I have to admit that it took many many listens to appreciate but eventually it grew on me. Plus just the historical significance of Gillan fronting Sabbath, that is enough to make it remarkable and thankfully the music is quite good when you really listen to it.
I'm a Purple and Sabbath fan like Pete, and I really loved when Ian Gillan joined Sabbath too. My news source of metal information back then was Kerrang Magazine that I got from Zig Zag Records in Brooklyn. They had all pictures of Ian and Tony at the bar drinking beers and celebrating. I saw them on the Born Again tour at the Spectrum in Philly. The coolest image that I remember of that concert is Gillan playing the Congas during a Metal song. lol Hair flying. Good times.
My 5 pics would be: - Johnny Blade - Over and Over - In for the Kill - Kill in the Spirit World - Black Moon Great to hear what other super Sabbath fans think are deep cuts, especially Martin who’s wrote a bunch of Sabbath books. Great insight and selection of songs for sure. I guess I never think of a tune that was played on tour (or multiple tours with Country Girl) could be considered a deep cut, but that’s just my opinion.
1. Anno Mundi from TYR 2. Disturbing The Priest from Born Again 3. Wishing Well from Heaven And Hell 4. Nightmare from The Eternal Idol 5. Megalomania from Sabotage
Bonus track from 13 called methademic. Huge deep cut. Absolutely great song. You have Tony crafting some masterful riffs, Ozzy doing his thing. Fantastic.
Thanks Pete and Martin for this list here are my BlackSabbath deep cuts: - "Wicked World"- Black Sabbath (debut album) - (1970) - "Hand of Doom"- Paranoid - 1970 - "Planet Caravan" - Paranoid - "Solitude"- Master of Reality - 1971 - "Under the Sun" - Volume 4 - (1972) - "A National Acrobat" - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - (1973) - "Killing Yourself to Live" - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - "Hole in the Sky" - Sabotage - (1975) - "Megalomania" - Sabotage - "It's Alright" (Bill Ward on lead vocals) - Technical Ecstacy - (1976) - "Die Young" - Heaven and Hell - (1980) - "Sign of the Southern Cross" - Mob Rules - (1981) - "When Death Calls" - Headless Cross - (1989) - "Nightwing" - Headless Cross - (1989) - "Sins of the Father" - Dehumanizer - (1992) of course Black Sabbath has so many "deep cut" songs but I feel that these songs for me are the ones that "cut so deep"
First album I ever got was technical ecstasy in 77 favorite band all time. 1- tomorrows dream. 2-evil woman. 3-the writ. 4- megalomania. 4-killing yourself to live. 5-it’s alright(Bill Ward). 6-hard road. 7-sign of the southern cross 8-die young.
Ozzy Era: Thrill Of It All - Dio Era: Walk Away - Ian Gillan Era: Hot Line - Glenn Hughes Era: Danger Zone - Tony Martin Era: So many amazing songs from this era, but I’m gonna go with I Witness
Favorite album of all time is Sabotage and one of your deep cuts is You Won't Change Me? You have excellent taste. Megalomania is a given and Pete coming at us with Slipping Away which is one of my favorites from the Dio era. To be honest, I prefer listening to the deep cuts over the hits any day.
So totally agree with Martin Popoff regarding the spontaneous creativity in the Ozzy era contrasted with the more strategic songwriting from the Ronny era onwards.
Megalomania is a very underrated gem yet it is on of their greatest songs and my second favourite Sabbath song. For others from the various eras I'd pick Children of the Sea, Heart Like a Wheel, The Shining and Born Again. For others I'd put in are Air Dance, You Won't Change Me, Fluff, Devil and Daughter, Psychophobia, Anno Mundi, Time Machine, Under the Sun, Shaking Off The Chains, Forbidden and I could say more. There are so many underrated gems from their career.
Hi Pete and Martin. Here are some Deep Cuts from my favorite band. 1. Sleeping Village/A Bit of Finger/Warning - Black Sabbath 6. Wishing Well - Heaven and Hell 2. Rat Salad - Paranoid 7. Over and Over - Mob Rules 3. Lord of this World or After Forever - Master of Reality 8. Nightwing - Headless Cross 4. Under the Sun or Supernaut - Vol 4 9. Valhalla - Tyr 5. Hole in the Sky - Sabotage 10. After All(The Dead) - Dehumanizer
Juniors Eyes Buried Alive Call of the Wild Keep it Warm All moving parts stand still Night Wing The Sabbath Stone Walk Away Digital Bitch Angry Heart The Eternal Idol
Yet another outstanding show by you and Martin Pete. You two have great chemistry together. And this is another fine example. I would really love to see you two do Yes, Pink Floyd, and Rush. Now that would be cool.
Forbidden had 3 really solid songs. Can't Get Close Enough, Rusty Angels, and Kiss of Death. It doesn't suck as bad others claim. Just sucks when compared to other Sabbath classics.
Slipping Away was indeed played live before the Heaven and Hell band, or at least the first bit up until the solo. It's on Hammersmith 81. At the start of the tour they played most of Mob Rules - as far as I know the only song from that album not played live ever was Over and Over (unless they did it as Heaven and Hell at some point).
Here's my deeper cut (some deeper than others) Black Sabbath playlist. One song per album: The Wizard Electric Funeral Solitude St. Vitus Dance Spiral Architect Hole in the Sky Rock n Roll Doctor Johnny Blade Lady Evil Turn Up the Night Hot Line Turn to Stone Ancient Warrior Nightwing Heaven in Black After All (The Dead) Cardinal Sin Forbidden Neverwhere Damaged Soul
Yes! to Bill Ward's solo albums. If you haven't ever, do it. It's challenging at times, (and challenging to obtain physical copies), but ever so rewarding.
I love Technical Ecstasy and my band SPILLAGE did a cover of Dirty Women available on our channel...but Never Say Die was also criminally underrated and off that album...I love the tune Hard Road....love the lyrics in that one...
1.Anno Mundi ("Tyr" '90) with Tony Martin 2.Heart Like A Wheel ("Seventh Star" '86) with Glen Hughes, great solo by Tony ! 3.Hot Line ('Born Again" '83) with Ian Gillan 4.Over And over ("Mob Rules" '81) with Ronnie James Dio 5.The Complete NEVER SAY DIE-album !! with Ozzy. This is for sure a deep cut in their discography. As you both mentioned a very weird Sabbath album, but I like it a lot !
My list is 1. Megalomania 2. Too Late 3. Country Girl 4. Lonely Is The Word 5. Wishing Well 6. Slipping Away 7. Breaking Into Heaven 8. Digital Bitch 9. Hotline 10. Over & Over
I'll try, because alot of people still don't care for Sabbath but here goes: 1. The Thrill of it All 2. Air Dance 3. In for the Kill 4. St. Vitus Dance 5. Hotline Honorable Mention After Forever, All Moving Parts Thanks for reading

3. Falling off the Edge of the World - Mob Rules
4. Disturbing the Priest - Born Again

Junior's Eyes is my favorite Sabbath deep track. What a great song.
I love Junior's Eyes too! The Thrill Of It All is my top deep cut to share with newbies to Sabbath.
Air Dance for me. It’s very atypical for Sabbath but it’s awesome.
Junior's Eyes and The Writ are always the first songs I think of when someone asks about Sabbath deep cuts. So overlooked but soooo good!
- The Writ (Heavy progressive masterpiece)
- Air Dance (Jazzy Hard Rock masterpiece, amazing Don Airey keys)
- Over And Over (Ronnie James Dio at his most soulful and at the end Tony soloing to the point of ecstasy)

Saw sabbath rehearsal with Ray Gillen....;was the best sabbath!

3. When Death Calls
2. In For The Kill
1. Danger Zone

Johnny Blade...surely one of the band's greatest riffs along with Hero The Zero
Agree, Great tack.
And a killer solo, one of my fav Iommi moments
Heart Like a Wheel is the most underrated song of all time! Absolutely incredible guitar solos
Where do you get these ratings from?
"She's gone" I think is an amazing overlooked ballad imo. Ozzy sings with so much heart and emotion on that song. Incredible string arrangements and beautiful acoustics by Iommi
One of the saddest ballads ever recorded.
One of the saddest songs ever is shes gone
Ever recorded. Beautiful song. But so sad
Juniors Eyes is awesome, one of my favourite tracks.
That's the song that immediately came to mind when I saw this edition of Deep Cut Dives.
i agree juniors eyes is just a great song

Juniors Eyes are a well written song. A favorite. Those who pan Never Say Die are tone deaf.
As far as Tony Martin era, I really like “Valhalla” from TYR
Agreed Gary, Great track and album. Amazing singer. His voice on "The Sabbath Stones" is epic.
I like “kill on the spirit world”
Valhalla and the whole TYR album is criminally underrated album. I've really learned to love it over the years.
Tyr is the best Martin album. Changing the lineup afterwards fizzled out the Martin era.
Odin's Court/Valhalla is amazing.
Three Words “It’s All Right”. Majestic Song.
It’s alright

"You won't change me" Just love it!!🎸
“What’s the use” the bonus track of Cross purposes Japanese version is a killer. Up tempo, solid riff, Bobby’s tight drum. It deserves more attention.
Good show Pete/ Martin! Mine are The writ, Airdance, you won’t change me, Lady Evil, Lord of this world

4 - Cross of Thorns
5 - Kids of Death
Great list!!!!!
Black Moon on Headless Cross... what a vocal performance!!
Bonus track from 13 called methademic. Huge deep cut. Absolutely great song. You have Tony crafting some masterful riffs, Ozzy doing his thing. Fantastic.

3 - Cross of thorns
4 - Sins of the Father
5 - I Won't Cry for You

1. Who Are You?

3. Over and Over
4. Born Again
5. Dear Father
No love for "Dehumanizer?" Computer God, I, Master of Insanity, After All (The Dead), not counting the singles TV Crimes and Time Machine.
Loved the version of "I" they did live as Heaven and Hell.
Dehumanizer is definitely a very underated album. It is one of the heaviest Black Sabbath albums ever up there with Born Again.
Agreed...Dehumanizer is awesome!! I think I like it a bit better than Mob Rules.(Not better than Heaven and Hell though.)

I love all 4 of the dio albums. I prefer to think of them as the HEAVEN AND HELL band.
awesome album! blow me away from the first time! Love Letters from earth!
Hi, I will put the version of Juniors Eyes with Dave Walker in

of course Black Sabbath has so many "deep cut" songs but I feel that these songs for me are the ones that "cut so deep"
5. Kiss of Death (Forbidden)
4. Anno Mundi (TYR)
3.Too Late (Dehumanizer)
2. In Memory (7th Star)
1. Born Again (Born Again)
Kiss Of Death is killer and so is the title track to Forbidden.
Who Are You?, Air Dance, Disturbing the Priest, Trashed, She's Gone, All Moving Parts Stand Still (though the lyrics are really outdated).
First album I ever got was technical ecstasy in 77 favorite band all time. 1- tomorrows dream. 2-evil woman. 3-the writ. 4- megalomania. 4-killing yourself to live. 5-it’s alright(Bill Ward). 6-hard road. 7-sign of the southern cross 8-die young.
1. Born Again (whole album)
2. The Writ
3. Looking For Today
4. Wishing Well
5. Danger Zone
and
6. I....
Ozzy Era: Thrill Of It All - Dio Era: Walk Away - Ian Gillan Era: Hot Line - Glenn Hughes Era: Danger Zone - Tony Martin Era: So many amazing songs from this era, but I’m gonna go with I Witness
Tony Martin era is killer: "Anno Mundi" "The Sabbath Stones" and the immortal "Nightwing."
Wishing Well - Heaven and Hell
2. Rat Salad - Paranoid 7. Over and Over - Mob Rules
3. Lord of this World or After Forever - Master of Reality 8. Nightwing - Headless Cross
4. Under the Sun or Supernaut - Vol 4 9. Valhalla - Tyr
5. Hole in the Sky - Sabotage 10. After All(The Dead) - Dehumanizer
Juniors Eyes

Call of the Wild
Keep it Warm
All moving parts stand still
Night Wing
The Sabbath Stone
Walk Away
Digital Bitch
Angry Heart
The Eternal Idol
Peat want to say love what u do bro.. can't wait for more content
Yet another outstanding show by you and Martin Pete. You two have great chemistry together. And this is another fine example. I would really love to see you two do Yes, Pink Floyd, and Rush. Now that would be cool.
i just listened to that first Black Sabbath track Martin mentioned...it rocks
1. Megalomania
2. Voodoo
3. Sign of the Southern Cross
4. Keep it Warm
5. Wheels of Confusion.
Excellent choices.
Great tracks, but really not many deep cuts here.
Forbidden had 3 really solid songs. Can't Get Close Enough, Rusty Angels, and Kiss of Death. It doesn't suck as bad others claim. Just sucks when compared to other Sabbath classics.
Wouldnt really count Wheels of Confusion but Voodoo is killer
Slipping Away was indeed played live before the Heaven and Hell band, or at least the first bit up until the solo. It's on Hammersmith 81. At the start of the tour they played most of Mob Rules - as far as I know the only song from that album not played live ever was Over and Over (unless they did it as Heaven and Hell at some point).
Here's my deeper cut (some deeper than others) Black Sabbath playlist. One song per album:
The Wizard
Electric Funeral
Solitude
St. Vitus Dance
Spiral Architect
Hole in the Sky
Rock n Roll Doctor
Johnny Blade
Lady Evil
Turn Up the Night
Hot Line
Turn to Stone
Ancient Warrior
Nightwing
Heaven in Black
After All (The Dead)
Cardinal Sin
Forbidden
Neverwhere
Damaged Soul
Ancient Warrior
Angry Heart(my favorite song on the album)
Jerusalem
Psycho Man(I like it)
I've never seen them live or paid attention to their singles so if any of my choices are then oh well.
Yes! to Bill Ward's solo albums. If you haven't ever, do it. It's challenging at times, (and challenging to obtain physical copies), but ever so rewarding.
Great stuff Pete very fun to listen to now that i just got into sabbath in the last year.
and Martin was a awesome addition
I love Technical Ecstasy and my band SPILLAGE did a cover of Dirty Women available on our channel...but Never Say Die was also criminally underrated and off that album...I love the tune Hard Road....love the lyrics in that one...
1.Anno Mundi ("Tyr" '90) with Tony Martin
2.Heart Like A Wheel ("Seventh Star" '86) with Glen Hughes, great solo by Tony !
3.Hot Line ('Born Again" '83) with Ian Gillan
4.Over And over ("Mob Rules" '81) with Ronnie James Dio
5.The Complete NEVER SAY DIE-album !! with Ozzy. This is for sure a deep cut in their discography. As you both mentioned a very weird Sabbath album, but I like it a lot !
The album "Iommi" with Glen on vocals deserves its own Deep Cut video! One of the greatest, yet unsung, albums ever!
My list is
1. Megalomania
2. Too Late
3. Country Girl
4. Lonely Is The Word
5. Wishing Well
6. Slipping Away
7. Breaking Into Heaven
8. Digital Bitch
9. Hotline
10. Over & Over
I'll try, because alot of people still don't care for Sabbath but here goes:
1. The Thrill of it All
2. Air Dance
3. In for the Kill
4. St. Vitus Dance
5. Hotline
Honorable Mention
After Forever, All Moving Parts
Thanks for reading
Enjoyed the Black Sabbath deep cuts. I do not think I ever heard any Glenn Hughes or Tony Martin Black Sabbath songs before today.
- Junior's Eyes
- The Thrill of it All
- Gypsy
- Zero the Hero
- Walk Away
Cheers!
1 - St. Vitus Dance
2 - Over And Over
3 - Digital Bitch
4 - In For The Kill
5 - Shaking Off The Chains
Nice pick by Pete with Kill in the Spirit World
Back Street Kids from Technical Ecstasy I think is one of Sabbath's heaviest songs. Seems like its kind of a forgotten song.
I agree
I must say I love Megalomania and Hot Line. Here are some of my picks.
- A National Acrobat (I don't know if it's considered a deep track, but I added it anyway)
- Shock Wave
- Air Dance
- Ancient Warrior
- I
Just finishing Martin's "Sabotage" book. "Wheels of Confusion", "Megalomania", "St. Vitus Dance", "The Writ".
