What drives me nuts is how rock or classic rocks stations never play new music by older bands. You'll never hear anything off that new Deep Purple or Kansas album on our local station.
They are nostalgia stations, they are not Rock stations, they are for people who enjoy 70s/80s nostalgia, that's all. Same thing with Eddie Trunk and his shows.
Two bands I’d like to throw out there are Europe and Stryper. Both criminally underrated, and both of them, the last 5 or 6 years have been the best albums of their careers.
Pete makes a great point. When we lived and breathed these bands it was a different experience. In 1980-81, as a Brit I was immersed in the NWOBHM, with a friend who was similar age to me, we were 17/18. All we did was get a new album, go to each other's house and play it, go to gigs, drink beer, that was it. The music was great and life was simple. I met up with that friend again about 5 years ago and we went out for a beer. He said, much as he loves his family of course, those early years were some of the best times of his life! But yes we really did know everything about those bands and their albums back then.
Been a Joe Jackson fan for four decades and he has never really disappointed me. I always end up loving his newer stuff, though they often take time to reveal themselves. Probably wasting my time typing about JJ on Sea of Tranquility, though. 😁
@Brayton Wright yeah, Fool hasn't grabbed me yet, either. Usually his albums take a while to connect with me, though, so I'm not going to write it off just yet.
Kansas!!! Sorry to see Kerry, Steve, Robbie, and Dave go. But listen to the 2 new albums - it's like they're back and the great prog of the 70s along with them. WOW!
@@jake6887 really? I see them a few times a year in Chicago and can't say I've ever been disappointed. I guess I would be if I was still expecting the bad ass stage shows they did in the 70s and 80s.
Top 10: 1-Iron Maiden 2- Deep Purple 3- Magnum 4- Uriah Heep 5- Diamond Head 6- Queensryche 7- Overkill 8- Whitesnake 9- Saxon 10- Dream Theater HM: Thunder, LA Guns, Angel Witch, Testament, Marillion, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Judas Priest, Satan, Metal Church, Accept and Praying Mantis.
Alice Cooper!!!! Every album since 2,000 has been great!! "Dirty Diamonds" my fav. He gets better and better live as well!! Not to mention the "Hollywood Vampires'. ZZ Top last album (Rick Rubin)was their best since "Dueguello"!! Still going strong. Kings X never stopped. Great material all throughout!!!
I don’t know if you’d put them in “legacy band” status yet, but Alice In Chains is still making great albums and they sound GREAT live. William DuVall really was the perfect replacement for Layne and he sings the Layne songs really well, with a style of his own. Sure he ISNT Layne, but he’s not trying to be. And it works quite well
Anthony Jambor they are indeed. I saw them last summer and they still sound fantastic. As I said in my original comment, he’s a great fit and is able to sing the Layne stuff quite well and in his own way. He’s not trying to sound like Layne
I'm a little on the fence with Dinosaurs, but Rainier Fog might be one of my favorite albums released by any band in general in recent years... There are tons of new albums that are objectively good, but I've only listened to those maybe once or twice, whereas Rainier Fog makes me want to revisit it several times...
Whole heartedly agree. I would go so far as to say the Mark Tornillo albums are the best Accept have done. I would also say the last 4 Death Angel albums are amazing. Very similar to what Testament has done with their last 4. Alice Cooper always puts out consistently good albums, but I feel like his last two have been a cut above.
I'm going to mention my favorite band Blue Oyster Cult who will release a new album later this year. I never thought I'd say that and I cannot wait for new BOC material.
The Bouchard brothers have been releasing a ton of music, together and separately, with various bands, since the mid 90s. I love Don and Eric, but Al and Joe have been much more prolific. I am totally with you n that new BOC album, though. I can't wait. Heaven Forbid and Curse of the Hidden Mirror are both good albums. If they can match them, I'll be happy.
There’s a whole generation of younger Deep Purple fans who for them Deep Purple really begins with the Steve Morse era, I talk to hundreds of young Purple fans who own all albums from Perpendicular to Whoosh, and only start to discover the “classic” M2 era of DP later on. Social media, the MP3 years and the internet have given this band a whole new bunch of followers, like it or not these youngsters mostly only know Steve Morse as Purples guitarist !
I disagree totally on Iron Maiden. Brave New World was and is still and amazing album. Love all post 2000, but Brave is the best with Ghost of Navigator, Blood Brothers, Wicker Man, Out of the Silent Planet. Top notch./
Excellent mention of both Testament and Motorhead. Towards the end of Motorhead's life they were putting out some of the best material of their career and Testament' new material is better than their earlier stuff too!
Psychologically, I think there's a massive connection to nostalgia when fans listen to classic bands and their iconic albums. The older fans prefer to stay in that mental state of 21 when they hear bands like Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, The Who, etc. One of the most fascinating things about bands (or music in general) is the memories. In psychology, it's called episodic memory. Episodic memory is the long-term memory in the brain that involves the recollection of certain events, situations, and experiences. For example, if you grew up listening to The Who as a teen in the 60s and they were your first concert ever, you're most likely to use the episodic memory to help you recall where you were, what were you doing that night, etc. In a way, it does make sense why fans would lose interest in their newer stuff because it's nothing like "the old days." BUT as Pete and Martin were saying, you can't exclude their new things because their new stuff can be just as good as the classics.
Right. Dont forget too that with the advent of MM, music videos, truly did kill the radio star whereby what had formerly been an exclusively aural & personal experience suddenly, like almost overnight became one of image, celluloid content. The record industry & radio, both AM/FM undergoing a massive sea change.... that followed by the internet, music downloads. Whole new business model & paradigm and in my opinion, none of it for the better. I well remember that sort of twilight era of the late 70's into the 80's when everything changed. Thereafter, industrial programmers controlling radio with niche' formats from "Hits of the 50's & 60's" to "Classic Rock" on FM dials, playing to death the anthems & pop songs of those decades in order to maintain advertising revenues in capturing older audiences who in most cases no fans of everything from Ska to Punk, Electro-Pop, New Wave, nor were they fans of 80 hard-rockers, Supergroups like G&R's etc.
I agree with you. The only thing I have to disagree on is music downloads because we're now living in an era where people are streaming their music on Spotify and Apple Music. A lot of new independent artists rely on those streaming services as well as local gigs as a part of their salary to help pay the bills. I say that because I have friends in the music scene and my dad's a local jazz musician. Other than that, I do agree that music and corporate business have to maintain the nostalgia factor to keep older people happy. I'm a young woman in my 20s, and half the music I like is not the current music that's playing on the radio. It's usually rock/metal/prog/jazz fusion music from the 70s or new artists that are making their own music without the need for media attention.
Absolutely spot on.i also think fans want instant gratification . Some albums are growers they get better and better as time goes. If you are going to concert it makes sense to invest in
Sorry didnt finish to invest in the album the band are promoting you will enjoy the concert more. I appreciate there is more going on in people's lives you do not have the same amount of spare time as you get older. The more you invest in the group the more your get out of it. Tim johnson
Hey man your damn right. The new Kansas is big time fire. I haven’t stopped listening to it since it came out. Same thing with the new Deep Purple album and the new Wishbone Ash album just to name a few.
The music we love is not only attached to when you first heard a band (when you jumped into the catalog of albums) but the amount of time spent with the music. Now with streaming services, people have options paralysis with all the music at our finger tips at any time of any day. I personally don't spend days with an new album like I did when I was in my youth.
Absolutely stellar material coming out from mighty Saint'!!! Glad John Bush left Anthrax, although I liked the stuff he did with them, as now we have TWO killer bands again!
The one that I would pick is Alice Cooper.Especially live.I think he has put out a whole bunch of really good records from the 90's until current. Not all are great, but The Last Temptation,Brutal Planet,Dragontown,Welcome 2 My Nightmare and some others have been pretty damn good.Live ,he and his band have been great for the last 20 years or so.
I love Alice. Still puts on a great show. I met him in 1990. He was very nice. I would love to see a full tour with the surviving original members. They had such presence and chemistry.
I love all eras of Alice but his current band is my favorite band of his career. They can play everything live. I am actually a slightly bigger fan of solo Alice actually than the original band though I love their music too.
The two most recent Kansas albums are killer, and the band now sounds phenomenal live. (Which, sad to say, they did not in the latter decades of Steve Walsh's tenure, and I take second to no one in my love for Steve Walsh.) Also, I'm on tenterhooks waiting for the upcoming Blue Oyster Cult album. Hoping for some exciting new music.
Pretty Maids; Death Angel, Cheap Trick; Alice Cooper; Melvins; Saga, Rick Springfield, My Dying Bride and FM (UK) would be my immediate choices. I love the Kansas and Styx "recent" albums but the bands above have released more than just one or two albums in the last 20 years, and they have often been better than the releases that made them famous.
The Damned are still making great music and bar this Covid Nightmare, still touring relentlessly and always seem to be enjoying themselves and what they do. They deserve much more credit than they have got over the years. Keep up the great work guys. Great rant!
I really appreciate what you guys do for rock and metal. Your discussions are about the music and your experiences with the music, concerts, etc... You leave out the tabloid drama - which is a good thing! Many, many times I find myself laughing and nodding my head in agreement as many of your rock and roll experiences/stories are spot on. Thanks again!
A year or so ago Pete you opened my ears to all this awesome music from these legacy bands that i have loved for years. Its been so enriching to my soul to discover all this new music. Mission accomplished Pete your contribution to mankind is working.
My favourite Testament album period is Dark Roots of the Earth and my favourite Napalm Death album period is Throes in the Jaws of Defeatism. Last five Accept and last two Queensryche albums have been amazing too
King Crimson, Steve Hackett, Peter Frampton. Internet and Spotify changed a lot and in good way. I can listen to lots of artists and records from the past and the present, that I would never had access to, or could afford to buy or even know.
Deep Purple were a surprise for me. I was a huge fan of their mark 2 era and somewhat mark 3 but Stormbringer killed them for me, hated that album. Out of curiosity I picked up a couple of their recent albums and was very pleased. Those guys are rocking in their 70s and putting out some of the best music of their career!
My wife and I went to see them about 10 years ago in a smaller venue in Pennsylvania. We both knew just about everything in the set - Byron tunes, Bernie tunes, etc. The new song at that time was 'Kiss Of Freedom' and we both damn near cried listening to that track. It was also the last time I saw the band with Trevor before he passed. Class band with an amazing catalog!
One of my favorite bands is the Australian band The Church. They came out in 1980 or 1981, had their biggest commercial success in 1988-1990, their artistic magnum opus was released in 1992, but their best decade, in my opinion, was 2000-2009. For all the reasons you guys cite here. Four proper studio albums, two albums of acoustic reimaginings of earlier material with some new tracks thrown in, two albums of extra material, and an album of b-sides - all excellent, all top tier. The naughts version of the band was just better, more complex, deeper, more accomplished... yet people at their concerts over that decade largely wanted to hear music from their 1980's albums. Since 2009, they've slowed down considerably - only two new studio albums. But I much prefer the latter years of this wonderful, very underrated atmospheric, psychedelia band.
Completely agree with you! Hologram of Baal, After Everything Now This, Forget Yourself, Univited, Like The Clouds & Untitled #23 are the albums I listen to way more often than their 80's output.
Or even worse: - I don't like their New music + Have you listened to their New album? - No, haven't listened to anything new by them in the last 30 years
It was the same with Fan: I wish the mainstream radio would play our music and my favourite bands One of fave bands writes and records hit single that gets multiple radio plays. Same Fan: Sellout, don't like them anymore, they sold out to commerciality.
Well...there is nuance here people. It doesn’t have to be all one way or all the other. Nuance and context matters. Destruction is an example of going literally nothing new to where they sound exactly the same and it gets boring. They need to innovate a bit. Anthrax’s middle era is an example of doing something so different that it’s a completely different genre. They needed to go back to the sound that made them great (and they did). It’s a case by case thing.
Pete hits it on the nose. Less releases and accessibility back in the 80's. You got an album, you listened to it non-stop for weeks. Today, between the older bands we love and the one that followed it's a daily Baskin Robin's of choices everyday. Some new releases that I love I'll still play over and over, but not as much as I would have.
Well you guys prompted me to go get Dokken checked out and now I’ll be looking up some of those bands recommended here , Cheap Trick , Testament etc that I haven’t really paid any attention to. Saxon have particularly been on a great run of form , I couldn’t believe how good Lionheart was when it came out and haven’t looked back since , great band. I thought it was a very interesting observation that back in the day we all had more time with an album. At a gig pre lockdown I was telling my mate that I couldn’t recall the last time I’d listened to an album all the way through which is shocking . That said I’m always open to heritage bands driving forwards with new music and the truth is it’s mostly dam good.
Great episode, boys!! Really enjoyed every minute. Here's my list: 1. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM 2. OVERKILL 3. ZZ TOP 4. DEEP PURPLE 5. BLACK SABBATH (Tony Martin era) Honourable mentions: ACCEPT, UFO, URIAH HEEP😎😎
Great show. Old (mostly) guys who refuse to listen to “their favorite bands” drive me crazy too! I’ll also add the guys who refuse to listen to ANYTHING since about ‘85 and wear out their copies of Back in Black and Paranoid albums.
Saxon has been killing it the last few albums and further back. Pretty Maids came back strong. The latest Judas Priest album Firepower rules. LA Guns are great right now too, The Missing Peace is amazing.
The Rolling Stones. They're supposed to be coming out with a new album of all original material soon. I know A Bigger Bang was out 15 years ago, but so what? They still kick ass in concert and they are still playing live shows which are great!
I would also put Aerosmith in that category. “Bands that don’t release much new music, but still tour and kick ass”. Sure they don’t make much new music anymore, but they still kick major ass live, it’s all original guys, and they all still sound good despite the age
I agree that Rolling Stones still kicks ass live, but in the video description it says 'legendary bands that still pump out great new music' so I'm not sure if they fit into that category.
@@LuchaLibertaria That's why I included a "disclaimer". They're currently working on a new album with all original songs. In the meantime, they have released a few great singles: Don't Stop, Doom and Gloom, One More Shot, and Living in a Ghost Town.
@@steveclark9211 Those are just Mick averages tunes. Had they kept them in the setlist, I think would got really stonified and might had became some great songs.
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Molly Hatchet, The Damned, Marillion, Echo and the Bunnymen, Cheap Trick, Bob Dylan, Dream Theater, King Diamond, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Yello, Rush, Erasure, Helloween, Accept, Mavis Staples, Neil Young, The Church, Tom Waits, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Motorhead.... All of these artists continued to put out quality material long after 1990.
I’ve listened to Maiden since the mid 80s, I love their new albums - I love their old albums... I listen to Seventh Son the most, bit I’d listen to final frontier over their debut.... they’ve done some great stuff in the last twenty years...
I was all set to see Cheap Trick and Rod Stewart this year together..2 of my favorites...next year it is, hopefully:)...Perfect Strangers is my favorite DP album also, and i really like Whoosh too.....Great show, Pete and Martin!!
2020 was the year I discovered a lot of new stuff, and started listening again to older bands with new stuff, thanks to Pete! Like Stryper, Deep Purple and discovered new music - like Glenn Hughes and Dead Daisies! Although I was working from home, I had some more spare time than usual - so I listened more - and discovered more - just like Pete mentioned when we were younger.
Been enjoying your channel the last couple months. I immediately thought of Uriah Heep when I saw the title of the video. If I could suggest giving The Cult and Monster Magnet some love?
Great discussion! Interesting take by Martin on Metallica's recent music. I'd like to hear him elaborate more on that. Ace Frehley is putting out good stuff. The latest L.A. Guns is very good.
QUEENSRYCHE/. Most are no GEOFF/ I’m DONE ✅/ I get it. BUT saw them 3-9-2019 IRVING PLAZA NYC. / they were tremendous with Todd La TORRE / new vocalist and the last few albums with him. Real good / IMO
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal The last 3 albums have been a million times better than the rubbish they put out with Tate post Promised Land. Wish DeGarmo would come back for one record though, his guitar sound and songwriting talents are solely missed.
Love new Overkill and Testament! Purple's Perpendicular, Abaddon and Now What? are all solid albums. Saxons newer music is very heavy. Just got into more ZZ.Top and Kansas! Great show Pete and Martin!! Love it!
Add to this rant Opeth. Everyone wanting every release to be the second coming of Blackwater Park. Heritage right through In Cauda Venenum, rank among best albums they have recorded!
1. Killing Joke----no really bad albums and my fav by them were their twelfth and thirteenth of fifteen, always powerful sound live. 2. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead---ok only started late nineties, but a lot of albums all at least well decent to great, latest album was great. 3.Diamond Head / Angelwitch last two releases very good level of power and song writing, and still great live. 4. I still enjoy BOC and hoping new album will be ok, i liked Heaven Forbid a lot. 5. Gary Numan---last six albums better than his early career and lets not talk about middle career, but second to last album Splinter is my fav. 6. Nine Inch Nails-for me never written a rubbish album and always great gigs, different each tour.
@@edgelord13 Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell is my fav, it's heavy as hell and my second fav is the album that followed Absolute Dissent, which to me was a bit more indie styled but still plenty heavy. All well good though.
Hey Pete, thanks for mentioning Uriah Heep, I have been listening to the new stuff this afternoon. And it rocks! It has everything you would want in a hard rock album, great riffs and lead work, great vocals, drumming and tasty keyboard work, great lyrics and song writing.
For me, Pearl Jam still rock. I grew up with PJ, joined the 'Fan Club' via mail order back in 1991 off the back of the debut album, and Im still a member of the fan club today! Thats crazy. But I always dig their new music still, and their live shows are out of this world. They might have grown up, but they have not lost any energy whatsoever.
My list aside Overkill and Testament, Death Angel, Exodus and Sepultura are kicking ass... DA trilogy was fantastic, Exodus last teo albums are really good and Spultura with Eloy on drums is another band, from the old school 70s and 80s Fates Warning, Dream Theater and Queensryche are putting out solid albums, Candlemass is another great band that has some really good uhmmmm EPs...
Neil Young + Crazy Horse is the first that comes to mind. Last year's album, "Colorado", was wonderful, 50(!!!) years after the iconic "Everybody knows this is nowhere".
Pete, your Testament bit led me to their new album.....spotted a song called Code of Hammurabi and thought....."I recognize that title" .....did a quick search in my collection and found the Hedvig Mollestad "original" - what an awesome jazz rock trio she leads! How about a show on her?!
Shame no one picked heart as I think there last 4 albums have been phenomenal I loved 70s 80s 90s but I love there last 20 years even more Pete does champion them but I love love love heart all eras even the 80s was great the wolf The night. Shell shock bad anamals but lately from red velvet car on in there best great show loved the zz top testament and Motörhead. Aftershock amazing great show guys 👍🏼🏴🤟
Loved this video as it hits home. I've also come across many people who only know the "hits" or songs the radio stations pump out countless times per day and have no interest in the later music from older bands or didn't even know newer music was being put out. It was good to see Pete finally get around to later day Dokken recently after losing interest in them. I would also like to add the bands Riot and Diamond Head.
I'd throw in Night Ranger and, up until the last tour, Toto. While Night Ranger has lost alot of the vocal prowess chiefly in Keagey (whos nigh unlistenable live) they are playing heavier than they ever have and with a remarkable youthful energy that belies their age even if the songwriting isn't quite as isn't as inspired. Toto on the other hand has been cranking out truly inspired music and their legendary penchant for perfect execution and production always translated seamlessly into what I regard as one of THE very best live acts in history up until the very end.
Deep Purple since Perpendicular is definitely great and continues to improve with each listening. Fully agree on Testament, so consistent and amazing thrash for 20 years for me! I will have to dive into Overkill. Recently dove into Accept. Their latest 4 albums. Yes, similar sound to Priest, but still very strong releases.
As a singer, I have a different take with Uriah Heep. The singer, and me liking the singer's voice is very important to me. I was about 14 when Byron, whos voice I loved, left the band. It wasn't Uriah Heep for me anymore and I completely lost touch with them, and was not interested in ever seeing them live. Its like Queen without Freddie !
I thought that Kansas went down the tubes when Kerry Livgren left. He was such a great musician, composer, lyricist, and orchestrator. It wasn't Steve Walsh's leaving that bothered me. It was Kerry that truly made Kansas great. Then Zak Rizvi came along & wrote some great stuff for the last 2 albums. Now Zak is gone, so who will write for them now? Kerry could, but he's busy with his Cantata. By the way, why did Zak leave?
Queensryche, Metal Church, Flotsam & Jetsam but most of all : Stryper !!! These guys are getting better, heavier with every release. Top notch heavy metal!!!
Great choices! Stryper for sure. One of my all time favorite bands. The new album is amazing, as have been all of their albums since they got back together.
Hi Pete and Martin! So, my formative Iron Maiden album was by and far Brave New World. It's the first Maiden album I really connected with as a new release when I was 15. Bruce back in the band, "The Wicker Man" blasting as a new song on the radio, wow, it just blew me away. I had never heard, and to this day, very nearly still have never heard, a reunion single after a long time away or defunct (or without original members in this case) that sounded that good. And I know Popoff is not really a big fan of that record, but to me, it will always be my favorite Maiden album, partly from nostalgia, but also, I really think the songs hold up, everything from "Ghost of the Navigator" to "The Mercenary" to my favorite, "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate." So many memories of blasting that album from start to finish, driving on lonely midnight roads out in the middle of nowhere, road trips to far off cities. It's probably the same feeling that people who's first, definitive Maiden album was one of their early greats get when they recall the first times they blasted Powerslave or Piece of Mind. Brave New World will always be that album for me. Also, my first real metal show was Maiden on the Brave New World tour with Halford and Queensryche as backup. Great first show. Love this channel, big fan of you two. 🤘 Teegan J.K. Evens
@@anthonyrivers1619 he has actually changed his opinion over the years, he's stated in videos and interviews that he rated it too high at the time and considers it the worst album of the Bruce reunion years, not to say that he hates it or anything.
Pete, I love the conversation and your point about how music affects us at different phases of life. You are 100% correct. In the early 80's when I was in High School Music was my world. Waiting for albums to be released, reading all the magazine's about bands, attending concerts, wearing albums out, discovering new music etc. Maintaining a passion for music is rare as we get older. Its one of the things I love about the channel. You and your guests have really rekindled that passion for me. I tend to enjoy the old stuff that I missed and came before me ie early Genesis, early Floyd, early Fleetwood Mac, deeper into the discographies of Tull, Rush, Marrillion, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy. I loved Martin's point as well about writing about the stage of life they are in. Great Conversation between two extremely knowledgeable guys.
1. King Diamond - Better now(Live) than 20 yrs ago. Good album work except 'The Graveyard & Abigail II". Not all are Abigail and Conspiracy, but they have amazing /good songs. 2. Fates Warning - Both FW and Arch/Matheos have great and consistent work. 3. Candlemass - always interesting & interesting hearing original singer returned. 4 Bad Religion - Consistent work- rarely ever a disappointment album or live 5. Queensryche - I like many of the new albums, but dont 'love' them like the old ones, but I do enjoy them and I enjoy watching the band strive for a new identity. Definitely worth the listen.
The Damned, Marillion, The Psychedelic Furs, The Church, Fishbone, The Flaming Lips, Hoodoo Gurus, I.Q., Killing Joke, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Pendragon, Ozric Tentacles, Ride, Slowdive, Pixies, Bad Religion, Van Der Graaf Generator, Wire, The Specials and Spiritualized.
Sometimes for different reasons you loose interrest in bands but never forget their old stuff to hear/see them live you discover some of their new. Personaly I think that is great, you don't want just your favorites but to rediscover them. Bands I always been following and still by their new is: Magnum, Europe, Whitesnake, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams.
Good conversation BUT the crucial, intangible issue for me is songwriting. How many artists, including the legends, actually improve in that department? My theory borne out by history is that even the best have about an 8 year run of superlative songwriting; then, it’s either chasing the same mojo to diminishing returns or chasing new avenues in vain. Some exceptions? Perhaps. But I can’t really think of any glaring exceptions.
Have you ever heard of a band called Fuzzy Duck? The band included Mick Hawksworth, Roy Sharland and Paul Francis. They only made one album but, I believe that it's truly awesome.
Rhythmeen is my favorite ZZTop album also!! Savoy Brown has been around since 1965 and although Kym Simmonds is the only remaining original member, his guitar work has in my opinion gotten even better.
The Who’s newest album surprised me. It’s a top 10 album from them and maybe you could make a case for an even higher ranking. Blondie? That surprises me as I didn’t know they were doing anything recently.
Great segment guys! Always great when Martin is shows up for the discussions 🤘 you both make many great points, and your discussion on iron Maiden alone makes me want to revisit the last two releases, to approach it from both sides of the fence again. And though Glenn Tipton is sidelined from live performances, I strongly believe that JP are firing on all cylinders these days. Firepower kicks ass, delivery wise, songwise and definitely production wise (Redeemer of souls anyone???). Great job men👍
Bryan Ferry is still making good albums and is excellent in concert . I’ve seen him 5 times in the past decade and have never been disappointed . I would also add OMD who I saw on their 4O th anniversary tour last year and they are still making great new music and are worth seeing in concert . My final choice is Steve Hackett who is on a hot streak making great new solo records but his live shows are amazing and the live cds of these shows are a must have for Genesis fans
I’m listening to PERPENDICULAR as I write. It sounds like classic purple but more refined and tasteful. I’m GLAD that 70 something Gillian is singing (well I might add) rather than screaming. The melodies take you on a trip. Great chord changes. Thanks for the recommend. 20 years ago / possibly more / I saw wishbone ash open for the reunited monkees. Nice double.
I agree that Iron Maiden have put out great albums in the last 20 years. I love all five studio studio albums , especially Brave New World, A Matter Of Life And Death, and Book Of Souls. I also agree that Testament have also put out great albums in the last 20 years. I love every studio album that they have ever done including The Ritual and Demonic. Their most recent studio albums with the return of Alex Skolnick are all PHENOMENAL , especially The Formation Of Damnation, Dark Roots Of Earth, and Titans Of Creation. Testament in my opinion are heavier and more aggressive these past twenty years than they were on their first five studio albums. Accept is another band that has put out four amazing studio albums in the last 10 years. Accept reunited again in 2010 after being disbanded for close to 15 years with a brand new lead singer. Mark Tornillo replaced the original Legendary lead singer Udo Dirkschneider and made four amazing studio albums with Accept. I love all four studio albums big time, especially Blood Of The Nations and Blind Rage. Judas Priest two years ago released the Firepower studio album and in my opinion it is their best album since Painkiller which came out thirty years ago.
The new super group Revolution Saints, not a legacy band, but the musicians have been around since the 80s.. Deen Castronovo, Jack Blades and Doug Aldrich. Their first album in 2015 is a really good album! Heavy catchy riffs, crunchy guitar tone but with incredible melodic vocals by Deen. Good stuff 👌🏽
Interesting as the M2 and M8 line ups are the two most successful DP line ups. For me I've always thought it was a universal opinion that DP M2 is the accepted distinctive version of DP, however talking to younger DP fans lately and for most of them the Steve Morse era stuff is the only Purple they know, they can hold a 2 hour conversation about the best bits of Bananas or Infinite but struggle to name many tracks off In Rock or Fireball haha, it's crazy. I guess all the online Deep Purple websites, podcasts, interviews etc has rubbed off on the younger fans. I watched a young guitarist absolutely nail "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming" then he goes straight into the intro from "The Surprising" afterwards I asked him to do a Ritchie Blackmore riff, he didn't know any (apart from smoke) we talked for a while and he said him and all his friends loved mostly all the albums from Perpendicular to Whoosh and owned them all on CD, it's amazing how to most youngsters the Morse era to them is the real DP, i read recently that Whoosh is their best selling album since Who Do We Think We Are. I guess when Jon left the band in 2002 he had no idea how huge the band were about to get again, I still love M2 but have to accept M8 are catching up fast.
What drives me nuts is how rock or classic rocks stations never play new music by older bands. You'll never hear anything off that new Deep Purple or Kansas album on our local station.
sunsin1592
I’m with you, or like they never play Sabbath songs with Dio.
They are nostalgia stations, they are not Rock stations, they are for people who enjoy 70s/80s nostalgia, that's all. Same thing with Eddie Trunk and his shows.
Believe it or not,my local station plays woosh,by deep purple.rp
@@jaimeres I wish that would because we don't have time too look up for new music I didn't realize thay were putting out new albums
Huge Wheathead in the UK here. Looking forward to seeing the newest Kansas line-up next year in London (COVID permitting!)
Two bands I’d like to throw out there are Europe and Stryper. Both criminally underrated, and both of them, the last 5 or 6 years have been the best albums of their careers.
I agree
Strypers OZ Fox performs with Angel's singer Frank dimino quite often
Robin Trower and Savoy Brown still are making Great music
Savoy Brown's Kim Simmonds lives in Oswego NY, about an hour from where I live, so it is easy to see him all the time.
Along with Testament, lets not forget the mighty Death Angel! Still putting out great stuff, Humanicide!
AGREED!
Just getting heavier and grittier. Last 4 albums have been better than the last four Testament
For me it’s Ac/DC, still kicking ass after all these years, the new album is the best album in a long time. Hoping a tour soon
Still have their classic sound doing it well.
agreed have not lost a step
Been a Joe Jackson fan for four decades and he has never really disappointed me. I always end up loving his newer stuff, though they often take time to reveal themselves. Probably wasting my time typing about JJ on Sea of Tranquility, though. 😁
@Brayton Wright yeah, Fool hasn't grabbed me yet, either. Usually his albums take a while to connect with me, though, so I'm not going to write it off just yet.
Saw Cheap Trick 2-3 years back and they sounded exceptional. Three out of four original members. Still kicking ass.
Deep Purple, Saxon, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest and Blue Oyster Cult. Personnel changes but still kicking ass.
All great choices
Kansas!!! Sorry to see Kerry, Steve, Robbie, and Dave go. But listen to the 2 new albums - it's like they're back and the great prog of the 70s along with them. WOW!
Those two new BOC tracks are cool.
I saw BOC two years ago here in Europe. Very disappointing.
@@jake6887 really? I see them a few times a year in Chicago and can't say I've ever been disappointed. I guess I would be if I was still expecting the bad ass stage shows they did in the 70s and 80s.
Top 10:
1-Iron Maiden
2- Deep Purple
3- Magnum
4- Uriah Heep
5- Diamond Head
6- Queensryche
7- Overkill
8- Whitesnake
9- Saxon
10- Dream Theater

@@LuchaLibertaria Will do!
Wishbone Ash has a new album that is really good.
Diamond Head, so overrated.
Never liked his albums but live he is incredible.
And it works quite well
I would put them in legacy band status. The albums with William DuVall are very strong and great additions to their catalog.
Anthony Jambor they are indeed. I saw them last summer and they still sound fantastic. As I said in my original comment, he’s a great fit and is able to sing the Layne stuff quite well and in his own way. He’s not trying to sound like Layne
@@alexandergilles8583 Rick Beato has named Black Gives Way To Blue as one of his favourite productions 🤘
AIC is top 10 all time for me. Reason: their newer stuff is almost as good as their old stuff. Very little drop off, if any for me.
@@billschuster6680 The Bouchard brothers have released some great tracks I agree. Blue Coupe and Brain Surgeons are good too.
I love the new Deep Purple 'Whoosh'!! 🎤🎸🎵🥁
Top notch./
Yep, and The Final Frontier is the worst since 2000.
Brave New World is the best new maiden!, but The Final Frontier and book of souls i didn't like
@@Dehumanizer3000 I like BOS, but it's definitely not as good as BNW, DOD and AMOLAD.
The Wicker Man is like my favorite song by them! I'm not the biggest Iron Maiden fan but that song I really like.
BOS I liked on release but it’s got no replay ability. Their worst since Bruce returned for me
Excellent mention of both Testament and Motorhead.
Tim johnson
@@timjohnson8902 That is absolutely true!
That new Kansas album is absolute fire! I can't stop listening to it.
Hey man your damn right. The new Kansas is big time fire. I haven’t stopped listening to it since it came out. Same thing with the new Deep Purple album and the new Wishbone Ash album just to name a few.
Kansas have never made a bad album in any of their various morphed line-ups. Only Vinyl Confessions, John Elefantes first of the two, I’m not keen on.
What's your opinion on Stryper? Their last 3 albums and two singles released for their forthcoming album have all been top notch
🤘 if you're happy and you know it Bang Your Head
Their last three are their best.Imo👍
Stryper has never been better than now
Absolutely!! Their latest 3 studio albums are just as strong as their first 3 studio albums.
I am a Christian who loves hard Rock and headbanging. I love the guys in Stryper but their music is embarrassingly bad.
The music we love is not only attached to when you first heard a band (when you jumped into the catalog of albums) but the amount of time spent with the music. Now with streaming services, people have options paralysis with all the music at our finger tips at any time of any day. I personally don't spend days with an new album like I did when I was in my youth.
Armored Saint are still putting out great albums and putting on shows full of energy.
Totally agree!
I could not agree more!
A 1 hour rant with Pete and Martin? Today is a good day
The two most recent Kansas albums are killer, and the band now sounds phenomenal live.
Great rant!
Love the Damned.
Darkadelica (2023) is their best album full stop.
Last five Accept and last two Queensryche albums have been amazing too
Unfortunately we don’t get any more Motorhead music RIP Lemmy .
I wish they carry on without Lemmy...
The original band is dead there is nothing to carry on.
I love the new Kansas 'Absence of Presence'.🎤🎸🎵🥁
I was obsessed with Reptile when I was a teen. Very original sound.
Completely agree with you! Hologram of Baal, After Everything Now This, Forget Yourself, Univited, Like The Clouds & Untitled #23 are the albums I listen to way more often than their 80's output.
Brave New World really was that great Martin!! Although I'm glad you give big props to Final Frontier as that's a massively underrated album.
Spot on, fogzax
Yeah he lost me there. It's one of my top Maiden albums
Glad to hear Magnum getting so much love. Was hoping they’d be one of Pete’s picks.
Should have been one of his picks, but he only had a choice five I guess. Magnum along with Angel are two of the most underrated bands ever.
"I wish bands would go back to their old sound"
Also the same person: "I wish bands would innovate and go in interesting directions"
Or even worse:
- I don't like their New music
+ Have you listened to their New album?
- No, haven't listened to anything new by them in the last 30 years
excellent observation !
It was the same with
Fan: I wish the mainstream radio would play our music and my favourite bands
One of fave bands writes and records hit single that gets multiple radio plays.
Santana! Still making great music -- great live performances.
Here's my list:
1. FLOTSAM AND JETSAM
2. OVERKILL
3. ZZ TOP
4. DEEP PURPLE
5. BLACK SABBATH (Tony Martin era)
Honourable mentions: ACCEPT, UFO, URIAH HEEP😎😎
Flotz til death!
I was supposed to see ZZ Top and Cheap Trick in May on the same bill. Hope they come next year.
@@alexandergilles8583 Yes! Good point. Aerosmith would be a good one for that catagory.

All of these artists continued to put out quality material long after 1990.
Scorpions?
I’ve listened to Maiden since the mid 80s, I love their new albums - I love their old albums... I listen to Seventh Son the most, bit I’d listen to final frontier over their debut.... they’ve done some great stuff in the last twenty years...

I was going to take my mom to that show for her birthday! Fingers crossed for next year because that’s an awesome pairing
I had tickets as well.
Try Angel
Been enjoying your channel the last couple months. I immediately thought of Uriah Heep when I saw the title of the video. If I could suggest giving The Cult and Monster Magnet some love?
The first ones that come to my mind are Killing Joke and Satan. They both have all the original members on board and are doing great music.
Great discussion! Interesting take by Martin on Metallica's recent music. I'd like to hear him elaborate more on that.
Ace Frehley is putting out good stuff. The latest L.A. Guns is very good.
Yeah, man, you're right. Ace has been tearing it up lately. Far, far better than anything Kiss has done in 30 years.
Good call on L.A. Guns. I feel the last 2 actually are the best albums they’ve put out in some time.
The recent Accept albums have been great, too.
I love Deep Purple's Album Whoosh. Nothing at all is a brilliant track among their best. Throw my bones is excellent too.
Good choice-if Martin and I had 2 hours to discuss this topic, they would have also been part of the conversation.

Todd LaTorre sings his ass off. Excellent choice!
They are a different band without Tate, DeGarmo. But the last 3 albums are quality rockers.
@@HuddshouseofRockNMetal The last 3 albums have been a million times better than the rubbish they put out with Tate post Promised Land. Wish DeGarmo would come back for one record though, his guitar sound and songwriting talents are solely missed.

Add to this rant Opeth. Everyone wanting every release to be the second coming of Blackwater Park. Heritage right through In Cauda Venenum, rank among best albums they have recorded!
Not sure you'll find too many agreeing with you on that...
I love Killing Joke! The newer albums are great.
Also concur with Gary Numan as well
@@edgelord13 Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell is my fav, it's heavy as hell and my second fav is the album that followed Absolute Dissent, which to me was a bit more indie styled but still plenty heavy.
Death Angel has done some outstanding work over the last 20 years also.
Psychedelic Pill was excellent too.
Definitely. Neil Young still kicks arse with or without Crazy Horse.
@@steveclark9211 yeah, Drifting Back is not something I want to hear every day, but when that mood hits, it's perfect.

Armored Saint, Testament. Accept, Death Angel, Night Ranger, and Saxon are still releasing solid material

Thanks to Martin for mentioning ZZ Tops Mescalero. It’s brilliant! Really don’t know if that’s electric bass or electronic, but wow! heavy sounding.
Exactly bro! I’m praying Ozz will better! Stryper rulezzzz!
Teegan J.K. Evens
Popoff rated BNW an 8/10...
@@anthonyrivers1619 he has actually changed his opinion over the years, he's stated in videos and interviews that he rated it too high at the time and considers it the worst album of the Bruce reunion years, not to say that he hates it or anything.
Anthrax, Alice in Chains, Faith No More and the last 2 Flotsam and Jetsam albums have also been awesome!
Agreed! Flotz til death!
The Cult!!!! Very under rated! Still producing great music!
tee43music excellent choice!!!
4 Bad Religion - Consistent work- rarely ever a disappointment album or live
Bands I always been following and still by their new is:
Magnum, Europe, Whitesnake, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams.
Kansas yes!
Your commentary re: Walsh was spot on, my feelings exactly, nearly word for word. Thanks Pete
Yep. The canonical example of this for me was Rush. I actually a long winded rant about this elsewhere on this thread.
1 golden earring,2 kansas,3 reo speedwagon,4 eloy,5 tygers of pan tang,6 cheap trick,7 demon,7 raven,8 anvil,9 voivod,10 europe..Rock n roll
What a fantastic presentation this was Pete. You and Martin are the perfect duo for for any discussion on music!
Deep Purple, McCartney, Stones, The Who, Elvis Costello, Blondie
The Who’s newest album surprised me. It’s a top 10 album from them and maybe you could make a case for an even higher ranking.
Blondie? That surprises me as I didn’t know they were doing anything recently.
Thank you for your RANT- Legendary Bands Who Still Kick Ass! (W/ Martin Popoff).🎤🎸🎵🥁
Cheap Trick ... absolutely
ZZ Top...Have aged like fine wine.
The great thing about all the bands you mentioned is getting to hear them with stronger modern production!
Blue OysterCult
The Symbol Remains
Wasn’t out yet
But proves everything you’re saying
Great Comeback
Absolutely, their best album since fire of unknown origins
Honestly it genuinely did live up to the classic albums. Hell, I'd rank it higher than a few of them!
