Last night I listened to this song in my headphones as I was walking down the street in the dark and I just broke down completely. Going through an emotional break-up with the woman I considered the love of my life, this song just hit me in the gut. What a strong, beautiful piece, and how happy I am having discovered Amen Dunes recently.
I was reading something in an magazine about this song. He wrote this song thinking about her mother. When McMahon began recording this album, his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This song is loosely about how McMahon came to terms diagnosis. Then, I was thinking that in this video he intentionally trays to show her with the home old recordings when McMahon was a kid and she was young, strong, and powerful. It's a very sad and nostalgic song, but MacMahon try to say to everbody that how we can wake up and start to see our tiny lifes that we should be: conscious, grateful and compassionate.
It's been a little over 5 years since this album came out. I remember hearing a few days after it's released and was completely blown away. I've never heard an album that hits me so hard. I can't put my finger on it but it's extremely nostalgic in all the best ways. I've listened to it nearly once a week since it was released and I must say it's my favorite album of all time. Thanks for making it Damon McMahon!
This Song and the images and lyrics have gotten me through two very heart wrenching breaks up that weren't your normal detachments, it was crazy... can't tell you how good and sad it felt to pretend to be dancing with someone i lost in my living room of my one bed room apartmnet, and actually felt there presence there... but at the end i just wasn't down for their bullshit and they knew that and couldn't take it, these lyrics for hit me hard as fuck because it is exactly what i was experiencing... word up to amen dunes for being brutally raw in this
This song altered my life over five years ago during an absolute hell of a heartbreak…and it continues to do so. What an absolute masterpiece of nostalgia, honesty, and heartbreak in the face of unwavering reality. I’m so grateful this song exists.
I came to Amen Dunes via 'What's In My Bag', recommended by one of the guys from Pond. So happy I did, I'm loving the album 'Freedom'. Great music, heartfelt beautifully delivered vocals, engaging lyrics. The full package and a rewarding discovery.
I love how at the end of this video you understand that he is daydreaming about someone, and even though he's physically is alone, he really isn't. He is daydreaming about a ghost of love!
@@DrDoomTheOptimist I didn't put the girl in the video, but you can still love and miss your Mum, right? His Mother has terminal cancer and one day he could be without her, alone, and still with her in thought and love, sorta like I originally said, right.......
@@moongrime No yeah I mean of course who am I to say what the video means to Damon.... I just had heard the song was all about his sick mom. I haven't really been into Freedom all too long. I was late to the listening party, but I did get on a guest list for his stop in Nashville. It was a brilliant performance although only just shy of an hour....
I understand where you're coming from, but the thing I've always considered an integral component to real, meaningful art, is being ambiguous! I mean, yes, you can have a powerful black and white statement, but I prefer deeper, ambiguous explorations of everything. What means X to me could mean Y to you, through its interpretation, good art can be Universal and multi faceted!
@@moongrime Second that emotion! I Couldn't agree more. I'm really excited for the future of Amen Dunes on some real shit. I feel it's going to get even better.
This is a brilliantly written beautiful song and one i'll def come back to. I love the smooth sad rolling feel of the guitar playing.... Only minor critique I have of Amen Dunes is they could maybe benefit from being a little more wild and imaginative with their videos. There seems to be recurring theme of Damon lying around in his apartment slightly homoretically pouting at the camera in melancholy. I'm not sure about the crossover appeal of that image if the band want to get big. There are so many more interesting things to do with a vid like, animation, crazy dancing, flying, cgi, wearing crazy costumes, even go crazy and weave a deep story with puppets or something. Even just less pouting and more dark urban decay scenes would be better. Maybe none of the above, but my point is the imagination's the limit, which is no limit really.
Freedom is a masterpiece. One of the most underrated albums of the last 20 years.
Definitely a true gem
Easily.
No doubt

The build-up on this song is unbelievable. 13/10 this is a good song, Brent.
The songs power lies in the fact that it evokes so many different emotions in the listener at once

Damn I didn't expect Damon to be this sexy in this. This song is so good!

Which is slightly odd since the song is about his mum

I can tell you aren't a musician or artist. Maybe go back to your hippy edm festival Idk. But it's just a critique man.
