Taoist Author Mentioned: Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) Amen Dunes’ Freedom out March 30th on Sacred Bones amendunes.com Support the Show: / booksarebetterthanfood
I just want to come back and thank you for introducing me to Amen Dunes. I love Freedom and have listened to it a bunch. Since watching this I've bought a record player and have quite a few records including Love and Freedom. I start most days listening to Freedom as it puts me in a great mood. It is pretty much becoming my favorite album of all time. I seriously love every single song; it is a masterpiece. If it was not for this interview I would have maybe listened to one song and just wrote off Amen Dunes but I thought he seemed like a cool guy so I gave it a full listen and something just clicked with it for me. Thanks for this and I would love to hear any other music recommendations.
What a beautiful and inspiring interview! Thanks to both of you. Got curious to just check out a couple of minutes since I love "Freedom" and "Miki Dora" in particular, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Love it when this happens. Take care.
Even though Pessoa can be cynical and bleak at times, and is quite self-absorbed (after all, IIRC "The Book of Disquiet" was compiled out of random pieces of paper found in a trunk, never intended for publication), I wouldn't dismiss his work because of that. Maybe I just think that because it's become one of my favourite books, to the point where I'm afraid of recommending it to friends. His book of poetry "A Little Larger than the Entire Universe" (translated by Richard Zenith) is incredible by the way. You get to explore more of his heteronyms that are so vastly different from one another (they are all different stylistically and thematically, with their own contrasting beliefs). There are lots of what I would say are positive, beautiful poems, that rejoice life in there. I go back to it all the time. If you like Pessoa and are interested in reading more poetry, I'd give it a try! (Also, if it weren't for your channel, I probably would have never discovered Pessoa, and I am eternally grateful - so thank you!)
Ahhhhhhhh!! I pretty much watch Better Than Food regularly, and listen to Amen Dunes and a lot of Sacred Bones records releases....and now the two collide :)
More of these, old boy. Fantastic. It’s nerve-wracking when you’re talking about books etc with people you look up to and respect. Really great interview though.
Thanks for this…. He said far fetched to think of being a novelist…. But he is a tremendous songwriter lyrically, no one comes close these days ( for me )
Please read Josè Saramago if you haven't done it yet. His unique style will surprise you. Long, "melodic" sentences, meaningful theme, compelling stories. No modern bullshit, I promise. Portuguese, Nobel prize for literature, a great lover of Pessoa. I suggest starting with "Blindness". I wish to hear your review soon.
Oh! Haven’t checking my subscription list for some time and clicked on your latest video and came to this. Great. Probably my favorite Amen Dunes album so far. Will try to catch up with your other ones as well. One of the only books I’ve seem to have read of your latest is Doktor Glas /greetings from Sweden;) by the way, one of the first reviews I saw of yours was of Knausgård. Did you get around to some of his other books since?
Great interview man. You should really get into Jung, I just read his Modern Man in Search of a Soul and Psychology and Religion and am now about half way through The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, it’s some of the most profound stuff I’ve ever read.
Im doing an overview of Faulkner on my channel (as soon as I get this phone fixed): Light in August, As I Lay Dying, yhen The Soubd and Absalom, Absalom! (which Cliff's already reviewed.)
His bit about liking literature more than music is interesting because there's a Vonnegut quote I think rings pretty true that is something along the lines of "Almost every writer I know would rather be a musician."
+Weeraphat No offense, but reading is most definitely not the equivalent of writing. You can read a 1500 books, and still not be able to write. Same as listening to music doesn't make you a proficient musician, nor does watching films make you a filmmaker. Correlation does not equate causation. I don't know where you get this idea, that a book reviewer would magically have some valuable insight into the mechanisms of writing adequate prose. It does not work like that my friend... One tip I can surely give you: Watching wrestling videos most definitely won't get you there. :D
I like the new album from this Amen Dunes guy... And he's _kinda_ fuckable too. Ohhhh... ; ) Thank you for the video. Hope to see you interview more people, alongside the book reviews. Greetings from France!

Your interview style feels authentic and humane, best part of many days are spent viewing your channel!

Now interview Gira.
Ted Magyar could track him down on his ongoing(?) tour
We can only hope.
Yes
Ahhhhhhhh!! I pretty much watch Better Than Food regularly, and listen to Amen Dunes and a lot of Sacred Bones records releases....and now the two collide :)
This is great!! Would love more of these. And now I have a new artist to listen to -- win win.
More of these, old boy. Fantastic. It’s nerve-wracking when you’re talking about books etc with people you look up to and respect. Really great interview though.

You got a shoutout on inebriated off my favorite channels (Digibro.) Appreciate your work man.
Nathan Jones Thanks man, want to link to that?
What a cool interview. I really wanted to hear his speaking voice which is quite normal since his singing is so unusual.
Kabob Hope me too! Surprised , very pleasantly.
Whoa, didn’t expect to see this guy here. Great interview!
Damon McMahan.... cool
You should somehow try to get Elias Bender Rønnenfelt on this show!
YES, he's a huge fan of literature, very perceptive, great post punk frontman. I second this notion
Christian Hermo Elias and Cliff also share a favourite author.
Do tell😏😏😏
Christian Hermo Bataille. Elias also likes Genet, Yokoshima, Rimbaud who Cliff obviously loves.
Yes
I would love to see you chat with Joanna Newsom.
Man what a treat. You rule, the lot of ya

I blast freedom at work everyday!
Hope you stopped by the strand on your stop to nyc. Best place to find cheap hard to find books in the city
Please Review the wild detectives by Roberto Bolaño,I’m from México so I don’t know if that’s the title in inglish, here it is Los Detectives Salvajes
you are a great interviewer
How about interviewing Henry Rollins?
how about not interviewing any more musicians because it's too damn cliche and predictable?
Great interview man. You should really get into Jung, I just read his Modern Man in Search of a Soul and Psychology and Religion and am now about half way through The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, it’s some of the most profound stuff I’ve ever read.
This is a dream duo. Why is the algorithm slow by years?
I'll see him live next Wednesday in Vienna!
If you found out about him here, tell him I sent you ;)
Im doing an overview of Faulkner on my channel (as soon as I get this phone fixed): Light in August, As I Lay Dying, yhen The Soubd and Absalom, Absalom! (which Cliff's already reviewed.)
Dude this is awesome
*Australians* Hit me up for a private link if you can't watch.
I didn't normal like your music but I'm going to lesson to it and check it out!
Hey you are doing awesom job man .will you do book review that recommending by your big Fan :) . I am that big fan .
His bit about liking literature more than music is interesting because there's a Vonnegut quote I think rings pretty true that is something along the lines of "Almost every writer I know would rather be a musician."
i'm a musician & i'd rather be a writer.... music making is something everyone's able to...in my feelings..
Any chance you'll make a video about writing or how to be a writer in the future?

WAIT WTF????? IM JUST SEEING THIS
Off topic. What hair product are you using?
Boogies from the dollar shave club - the best yet. Cheap too.
You seriously should re-upload your film reviews.
+Better Than Food: Book Reviews
Please Cliff, we can't be the only ones to feel this way!
I won't re-upload (they're gone) but I will begin doing them (maybe re-doing) again, thank you.
Good stuff
Can’t wait for reviews of Jungs stuff!
No pressure on that though!
Love and TDJ are my soundtracks too
I read Jaws when I was 11 and underlined all the swear words.
I get hella David Foster Wallace vibes (I mean in terms of the way his cadence and answer) from Damon at 3:46
I’m much more into non-fiction but this is still cool
2:50 I died.
Brothers K? The Brothers Karamazov?
Love this! But please don't put each voice on a separate channel. It feels too unnatural
The first sentence of The Sellout is also great..
As far as bitter cynical pessimistic writing…..def E.m. Cioran and Schopenhauer
Omg, Damon's _sooo_ fucking hot... ; P I can't take it.
"the older I get, the less I believe in coincidences"..... meh
What the fuck Amen Dunes is sick and so is this
this is cringe lol
I like the new album from this Amen Dunes guy... And he's _kinda_ fuckable too. Ohhhh... ; )
Thank you for the video. Hope to see you interview more people, alongside the book reviews.
Greetings from France!
