    The Alfred Dunhill Tradition leather range truly celebrates the brands rich heritage using vegetable tanned leather and techniques such as hand stitching and skiving the act of thinning the leather for a clean finish on curves and corners that remain unchanged from Alfreds formative years. Each piece of dunhill custom leather is made at the Walthamstow leather workshop where the customers individual choice of skin, finish, hardware, functionalities and linings are created into completely bespoke and therefore unique large or small leather piece.
    All technical practices are undertaken on site at the workshop from skin selection, cutting, skiving and attachment of hardware to hand edge dying, branding, stitching and edge creasing. One person is responsible for the construction of each individual piece through to the final edge painting and cleaning, ensuring ownership and pride in each piece that is produced, resulting in the highest standards of workmanship. A leather card stamped with the name of this artisan is inserted into each piece of luggage to guarantee dunhill authenticity.

    +Ian Atkinson - No, mate. Your stuff is top notch and functional! I would rather have a custom made knife sheath or possibles pouch any day over a document case. Keep building what you build!
    Granted, this Dunhill case looks nice...but I agree with some of the other comments previously posted:
    1.) He didn't actually "finish" the edges, or even burnish them. Just slapped Edge Kote or something similar. The most he did was sand down the pieces after cutting them out from that glazed double-shoulder (That *is* a double-shoulder, right? Looks too short to be a full side) .
    2.) He didn't even STITCH the gussets to the main case, just glued them in and hammered them down with the rawhide mallet. WTF?!? (Unless he stitched those off-screen. But even if he did, I couldn't see any stitches...unless he painted Edge Kote on those, too.)
    Not that the gentleman leather crafting in this video isn't experienced in his work; clearly he is (you could see how quickly he used that head knife on the leather handle after stitching it). It's just the fact that, if you are learning to do leather craft, then you get an understanding of what's involved in working with leather and what could be done to make a piece more special. This video, although it has quite a bit of things that are alluring to those who like leather working, could show much, much more.

      Good to know. I feared that the bags were either machine sewn or made somewhere else and just had a Dunhill badge applied. Very traditional skills. I know I’m not the fastest maker but, for me, from template cutting to finish (excluding any set asides for glue setting) 30 hours of work. So, maybe, someone like the guy featured, could do it in £20 hours? That’s £80 materials plus £200 labour wages before you talk about factory overheads, retail overheads and profit. Anyone have better figures?

  • @Justmyopinionlol

    Very stylish video but the construction is really subpar. Even older Dunhill cases did not use the synthetic edging you see in all sorts of high end makers today. Instead, the leather is skived all around the edges then glued down and stitched over all around. This ensures a smooth leather edge and more durability. Eventually that synthetic edge will crack and water will creep into the edge. The Italians were the first to promulgate this technique to save time and labour and the majority of Italian production today are not really that high quality even with very high price. Even English makers who deal with bespoke only a few offer to do what I just described for a document case. This craft is dying precisely because uneducated customers just throw money around without expecting a superior product.

    • @dannylin5342
      @dannylin5342 6 лет назад +1

      I think he's referring to the application of edge paint on edges that are not skived/sanded/burnished. Edge paint (like Edge Kote) helps the edges to stay together for sure but skive/sand/burnish (slicking) before application greatly enhances construction and aesthetics. At the very minimum, it removes the share edges that could be a source of weakness and forces fibers in the leather to be bound together in a certain direction.
      Not sure what they used to mend the gap between layers of leather (check 00:57)? Probably didn't?
      The video is pretty underwhelming to say the least. I doubt this video would encourage anyone with basic leather working skills to buy them.

    • @StuninRub
      @StuninRub 6 лет назад

      neither, he's talking about a rolled / turned edge, which is currently out of fashion. Not really do able on large items unless you have a $50,000 machine though.

    I'm not impressed. Everything is pretty basic in the design and sewing, nothing complicated or difficult at all. The edge finishing could barely be called that (merely painting on edge paint is not finishing an edge). Anyone with a decent amount of skill and a sewing machine could do this.

      To clarify, I didn't mean to be a troll. I have done custom leatherwork in the past and no, I don't have any videos on youtube.
      I responded to the video because I have a problem with individuals or companies trying to pass off mediocre work as "bespoke old world craftsmanship" and relying on people's ignorance about said craft in order to impress them. (look,he's using a brush on the leather and running his hands over it, its so old timey! He is hand stitching a single small item on the bag oooh!) There is a reason they don't show the majority of the bag being machine stitched. It devalues those of us who actually do good work if everyone believes these mass produced, mediocre items are so great and are willing to pay way too much for them.
      "1 master craftsman, 2 days to create, 116 years of experience" certainly sounds like bragging to me, and I was simply trying to call them out on it, because they shouldn't be bragging about this case, and to educate people.
