How Dr. Martens' Are Made

- We visited Dr. Martens' only UK factory on Cobbs Lane in Wollaston, Northamptonshire. This is where Dr. Martens makes its iconic "Made in England" collection. The factory employs 50 workers that make about 100,000 pairs of boots per year, which is only one percent of what the brand makes as a whole!

that bloke had his hand near the flames like he’s never heard of fear
😂😂😂😂
The guy melting the sole into the shoe without any protective gear is the most metal thing I have seen today.
Yup, toxic plastic fumes not to mention that process, depending on how well it was done, will lead to early failure, within approx 1 year!
It has Steve, bought a pair back in the 90’s pure shit. The sole did departs thus never bought another pair. Waste of money. Boots didn’t even see a year.
Separate
I mean that may be hard core to you but I imagined this whole video more to be in the tone of:
"First a new Dr.Martens egg is formed by one of the 6 laying sisters of the lesbicus each identified by her own mix of 3/4 jeans, t-shirt and tie.
Than 2 brave workers take the eggs one by one and carry it to the succubus pen, where it is implanted and will incubate for the next 12-16 weeks. During this phase the carrying succubi must be fed according to their liking. To protect the workers from the fire spat during the feedings a thick layer of protective kevlar-glass wool gear is worn.
When their time has come a new pair of lesbian shoes is born. Always in pairs, one the exact mirror image of the other. Their color is solely dependent on the nutrition of the mother and the temperature of the succubui's uterus during the incubation phase.
After separation from their surrogate mother the new pair is carefully packaged and shipped to one of 94 locations worldwide.

Dm's shoes quality had declined ever since they started making in Asia (Thailand, Vietnam and China). Even Made in England's has low quality issue compared on what they made in the early 90's. Solovair's shoes is a must-try if I ever end up going to Italy or England. lol
But do you know what they make instead?
Money
Solovair is the way to go. I just got the dealer boots
I totally agree, it's about the company saving money but the quality suffers, it's a real downer
I had Dr Martens for many years, until the pair of boots that I had which were made in Asia fell apart after a month. That was the last pair that I will ever buy and I told this story to many people who previously bought the English manufactured Dr Martens
Dont give up yet. Just buy vintage. Just last month off of poshmark i got the 2 tone 3989s. Excellent condition …. Vintage quality. Not the asian crap nor the made in england price. $50
3:46 my favorite part! So satisfying
Bruh my parents both each had like five pairs of Doc Marten's before I was born they still have them and it's almost been 17? Years and they look great
5 PAIRS that is so much
Asa Gillespie not really
[KIKI] I don't have any, but my mum and dad had those boots and other brand's. I mean, if 5 pairs are all that guy's parents had, it's not really "too many".
[KIKI] that’s like 500 hundreds dollars on the same pairs of shoes!!
They have been around for a long time. I had several pairs in middle school and high school. In 92 and up.
This makes me appreciate the shoes waaaaayyyy more. It also makes me agree with their price of these. I honestly thought they were a bit too expensive but now that I’m understanding just how much goes into one pair of these and the amount of care and love used to make sure they’re up to standard has me counting and savin all me munny!!! Thanks everyone at the doc factory for the wonderful shoes and all your hard work! Us shoe lovers appreciate you all so so much!!!
Alexandra Marina you have to make sure it's the made in England versions. Most are actually made in China and cost almost the same amount. If you ever buy a pair, look on the sole for the made in England stamp
Simone H oh dang! Thank you so much for the heads up Simone!! I’ll be sure to make sure it’s from England! It’s so admirable to know they kept it old school and reserved a bit of history. This is so cool. They need to start paid tours and have the earnings split between all those workers by the middle of end of the year! I’d gladly pay extra to see my docs made!
I agree with that.I`m the operative on the welt sewer putting the yellow thread on.We have regular tours every week These range from people that are life long DM fans to familys that have curious kids
Alexandra Marina I
paul watson that’s so awesome!!! I remember first seeing these shoes when I was 19! My friend had some of these and let me wear them for a week and I fell in love immediately! These shoes always had me in “bad ass” mode lol! But I never bought any! Like I said before I just didn’t have the money and thought it was so pricy. I’m 25 now and am honestly glad I didn’t buy any before because I don’t think I would’ve appreciated them as much as I would now after seeing this. I live in America and just knowing that you guys give tours and keep it so tight knit in your factory family gives a nice and fresh experience for your all of your customers. You guys all must work so hard too! Insider did an amazing job at showing the thorough steps taken in making these and also showing the speed and focus that you’re all required to meet! It seems like a very down to earth company but I think having down to earth employees is really rare nowadays just because we live in such a fast pace type of era and seeing so much passion in a brand is always inspiring. And I think there should be some recognition of all that hard work even if you do have good pay and benefits with your work. You guys go the distance! I’m super proud of all you hard workers at the doc factory as well as the dedicated workers at Insider! You all are very much appreciated by the public and I genuinely wish you a fantastic rest of the year! Thank you so much for responding back to my comment too! You and everyone who agree with my comments all made my day! Much love to you all!!!🤗💕
Bought some Docs like 15 years ago. Still in great shape. 🤘🏻
At one time, when the sole wore down, you could have your DM's returned to the factory to have new soles fitted. I had a pair resoled once & when I returned them a second time, they were lost. I was sent a brand new pair as a replacement. The first pair I owned were junior DM's in 1972, a child's size 4, brown leather with a stitched toecap.
The 2 pairs that I purchased in 1992 and 1994 still functioning. It's sad to say there's a specific "Made in England" collection. They were ALL made in England once.
Velvetmango it’s shame but also would means every pair of DM’s would cost like £200-£250.... however since they last forever it’s pretty good value for money
They were first manufactured in England, they were designed there. They are made with specific requirements. But yeah, thanks to this free trade bullshit, we're all forced to deal with the lack of care Asians put into products.
By "Asians", I mean the people who run the companies who pay workers shit wages, and have hardly any pride in their work.
@@haidengeary8277 Solovair used to make them, id go with them.
to be fair, they almost ran out of business too. The Chinese factory decision kinda saved them.
I just got a pair today. Their a bit pricey but worth it because I feel like the quality is very very good. I never knew they made them now in Asia. Everything these days in made their tbh from I phones to Michael Kors.... I’m not saying it’s bad but European goods are usually more idk how to say it more quality and luxury brands that are Italian and French.
Bought a pair of doc's shoes about 17-20 years ago and are still solid! What's even more amazing is the shoe laces are the original as well!
Goddamn love my Doc Martens!
The originals where pretty dope yea but the "current" ones (the "made in China" version) are horrible...
Foot padding is where the weakness are... It depend on quality of when it made.. I mean i would want to wear 16 years old shoe... it a bio-hazard....
That's when they were docs. Now they are nice knock off. Leather quality and material quality took a major hit.
I made the mistake if young my originals. Replaced them with the post Nike buyout. The damn upper leather was vinyl. Rotted out.
No more pride in the shoe.
@@campkira I still wear my grandpas schoes from when he fought in WW2.
He, my dad and I took proper care of it so no biohazard :p
They still fit you from 17-20 years ago?
Brilliant. My 2976 w Zip went trough hightide in Venice (two times!) and they still are in perfect conditions. Best shoes to own.
Combination Art and Technology.. Good Work
Yeah now show us how the ones in Asia are made
I have the doc Martin steel toe boots made in China. The sole split after a year or so
With machines and underpaid workers likely. But had Dr Martens started out with hand sewing their boots I'm sure somebody would've frowned at a switch to sewing machines. Truth be told the Asian boot is a better looking product, the stitches are much more uniform precisely because they were made by a machine. The only real difference is the quality of the leather, which is tougher(and therefore harder to break in) but even so, if you take care of the mass produced shoe it will last. If you buy the Chinese shoe you're not getting a shit product.
@Bomber Harris A youtuber called Rose Anvil has a series of video's cutting up an comparing Dr Martens with Solovair boots, ons of the original British contractors who made shoes for Dr Martens before the Martens before being dumped in favor for Chinese manufacture.
Mine were made in vietnam. Not sure if it's gonna last
Not just the ones made abroad, I gave DM one more chance and splurged for the Made in England ones, they lasted nine months (where I wore them maybe 2-3 times a week) before the sole was completely worn away, and more importantly falling away from the boot (you could fit three fingers through it). Never buying again, may change to Solovair.
I've had the same pair for 16 years now that were originally made in England and now the inside foot padding needs replaced...these shoes are def made to last!
the MIEs are, the china one? Not so much.
Foot padding is where the weakness are... It depend on quality of when it made.. I mean i would want to wear 16 years old shoe... it a bio-hazard....

No other word in the word can explain pure lasting craftsmanship then DR MARTENS!
I've spent half a life time living where I am. I was clearing out part of the attic during lockdown, and found an unworn pair of size 12 (UK) 10 hole black Dokkies with steel toecaps, still in the box. They were bought second hand though, and a note inside said: Brick lane (which is a street market in London) £7, June 1987. I bet I haggled trying to get that price down. I smoothered them in hide cream and left them for a month, then polished them up. Lovely and comfortable........
These boots are very durable. I recommend buying one. I have a black pair now 3 years. I plan to buy another pair after these officially die on me ;)
How is its condition after 3 years? I’ve known about Martens for quite sometimes now but never gotten one myself.
John Wee or use shoe polish
I don't think they'll ever die you just grow out of them 😂😂😂 only thing wrong with them- they don't grow with you 😂
You mean after you die in them

I literally have the dr marten website tab open rn and then youtube recommended me this video? their accuracy is getting a little too close to comfort rn LMAO
Same!
Well i’ve never looked up anything Dr Marten related in my life and this video popped up for me too so don’t feel too weird
I farted earlier. A tums commercial just came on.

why does the “LMAO” seem more like “SOS” I- 💀
I love a quality manufactured shoes. Just breath taking!!
I’ve had a pair of Docs for over 20 years and they are still both comfortable and still good
I bought a pair of Docs in November and they're made in Vietnam: I was honestly pretty disappointed considering how much they cost and that I live in England. I took them from the original website so they're surely not fake, just not made in England. And just for you to know, they already have scratches and the leather is ripped on the tip despite me being careful. I had another pair of Docs when I was little and they were not of this poor quality.
They have a "made in england" category on their webstite, but yeah, the rest of the shoes ar made in vietnam with a poor quality despite the price
The ones in the video are the 1460s I believe. If you want the real thing by US Military combat boots :)
@@harleyreyes7341 Those are made down the road that the Solovair factory in the same town.

Bought my first pair today! Love them
now I know y they're so expensive!😂
Just the ones made in England.
$170 is not expensive for boots. They are expensive for Doc Martens though because they’re all made in Asia.
yeah usually good boots with serious leather that can take abuse can range from 200 to 400$, even more. Docs arent that expensive when you look at them, considering that they look extremely nice and are very durable.

Fascinating. I did not like this shoes but to see the production make me very interested on this model. It's pretty cool to see this kind of manual production in 2018.

It would be cool to see a video that has the same production level and goes into the same amount of depth into their other factories around the world to see the difference in construction and care for the non-made in England docs
Una chulada de zapatos,mis favoritos!!!

When buying The Dr Martens' shown in this video you have to buy the "Made in England" collection, which runs $50-75 more..
The standard Dr Martens' lines are all mass produced in Thailand, hence the whole page on their website about Ethical Trade and Child labor...
Ive never heard anyone actually say “doctor” martins
There's a song where the guy singing says just that... This guy is the 2nd time i've heard it... funny..
I think the British say it that way? I know in the states it's definitely more doc Martens or just docs.
I was born in Britain and I've always said Doc Martin's only recently have I heard somebody say dr

Agreed
Had my last pair for 5 years to the month. I wore them just about every time I left my house for the entirety of those five years. I wore them hiking, to the snow, to the beach, to concerts, everywhere. I wore them everyday at work doing 4 days of 10 hours, sometimes standing, sometimes walking up to 15 miles per day. There is hardly anything left to the soles now, but I know if I had to I could probably manage to get another year or two out of them. They had just begun to split after losing all markings on the bottom. Bought a new pair last week.
Had a pair when i was young brings back memories 👍👍👍👍
Just bought my 1st pair of Made In England shoes. The craftsmanship is outstanding.

@@chriskolb3105 ... "You're" obviously illiterate.
I'm still under the impression that a true welt is meant to be stitched both to the upper and the sole - not only for durability, but also for resoleability. My question now is whether the fused PVC sole equals or exceeds the strength of a properly stitched sole (never mind that it cannot be resoled).
It honestly seems like a really cool job to have!
Built with passion. Respect to them.
My mom owns 20 pairs of Dr Martens, she loves every single one of them! I own one pair and love it, so I recommend all of you to get a pair! It may be expensive but it lasts for years and it's super comfortable!

I got one pair in 2012, still look new.
In Thailand, Dr.Martens shoes are quite expensive for thai people.
But hey, I don't care! They're beautiful and I, a student, didn't regret buying them XD.
They are expensive everywhere in the world, but that's because they are good quality of course.
I like to sit and eat i have a pair of brando 101 made in Thailand and they look fine. I wouldn’t have bought them if they hadn’t been on 50% sale though.

My favorite brand shoe is Louis Vuitton
When I was a student (20 years ago) I used to wear them. That or Clark’s wallabies. Both were made in England and affordable. Doc Marten’s moved production to China but was still selling them at the same price (I stopped buying them at this point of time, and they lost a great deal of their loyal customers too). Now they brought part of the production to England... but at a serious premium. How greed has destroyed an icon...
