Everytime I watch one of your videos three things happen: 1) I mellow out with your vibes. 2) I immediately want to start making beats 3) I can't stop watching your content. Amazing work Jon. You are truly an inspiration and an amazing source of knowledge for beat enthusiasts like me.
Same! need to keep convincing myself I do not realllyyy need an oktatrack again, but "Michael"😂 here really makes it look and sound sweet. Great to see legit hiphop made on one.
Is this edited from a twitch stream? If so, incredible job. You really boil the video down to its essence! The editing is a strong part of why I love this channel
because of the snare placement I think the beat is felt more in 6/8 or even 12/8 - basically a slow 2/4 or 4/4 but subdivided in triplets. very cool and fits perfect. I think it's hard to make straight 3/4 in hip hop because there is no way to get the alternating kick/snare.
This is true. Even the song "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time" by The Avalanches is more like 6/8 (same snare placement). However check out Teebs' song "Just the Yellow Bits", it's in 3/4. It's not exactly hip hop but falls within the LA beat sound, so it's adjacent at least.
yeah this is how it always ends up when i make a 3/4 beat, the drums are just 4/4 but slowed down (which is a great format for ballad type stuff). music theory people will know to check the meter, but to me it's just semantics and i'd let people use the terms interchangeably
This is correct-it’s 6/8 not 3/4. (Feel like a douche saying this but I’m a former music theorist, currently tryna get at Jon’s lvl with the hip hop beats!!) clearly correct analysis ability correlates in no way to being able to make dope beats haha
I love making beats in less common time signatures! I have made some in 5/4 and 7/8. It can be a challenge to get it to sound natural but the process is fun. I've found that subdividing makes it a whole lot easier. Let's say for 7/8, instead of counting 1-7, count it as one bar of 4/4 plus one bar of 3/4. Highly recommend trying it if you feel yourself getting stuck in the same old rhythms.
I stumbled upon your channel as a fellow Octatrack user. I’ve never really enjoyed hip hop in the form of RUclips synthfluencers. But you have really shown through your process that sampling is truly an art form. Your meticulous slicing method and overall sense of hearing the full song is really really fantastic to watch. On top of that, every song that come out of your sessions is a bop. Thank you for making me realize that I can find new ways of making music if I practice my chopping technique.
So glad to see you making content again! One of my best twitch moments was sending a sample suggestion in the chat and hearing you say something like "whoever sent this sample is a good person" when you heard it
It's been an absolute blessing to have been a listener of yours for so long. From accidentally stumbling across RUclips uploads of your early stuff (first song ever must've been either "Face Bomb" or "guttertoads"), right around the same time I discovered people like Samiyam, Devonwho, Teebs - getting hooked instantly and through your music discovering Zeroh, Jeremiah Jae, Quelle and so on! From the Rap albums, to the beattapes, to seeing you do these entertaining yet really laid-back and informative beat-making videos. Good stuff, Jon! Keep it up, from someone who's been a listener for.. I wanna say at least a good 11, 12 years by now!
Yes to everytning you make man, these videos are so cool, I literally thought that only 4/4 beats could sound good, the way you use the sampler and also the end result is so crisp.
Thanks, Oldboy Andros. I'd say you should always consider the source material and if you want to change it to another time sig. Sometimes it might be best to build around it.
Michael you're the man. I found you a few days ago and man I can't wait for you to release those beats and let me become busta rhymes, method man and biggie and some kind of ninja batman warrior all at the same time. Bless you
My dude, i feel like my heart beats in 3/4 , I kinda forgot how to swing any other way. It's the most boppy flow and has so much damn potential. Keep it up dude, love watching you learn this process
Im glad you posted this man, because I was literally just talking with my friend about this. I hate 3/4 time. Its so difficult to work with. I simply refuse to sample anything in 3/4 now.
What do you mean? Making a beat with this triplet feel? This beat sounds more like 6/8 to me btw. But converting 3/4 into 4/4 is easy. Many of my favorite samples start in 3/4 or 6/8 before I chop them. And Thanks @Jon Makes Beats, loving the vids.
my only issue with these videos is that I can't listen to them and make beats at the same time blessed content from a blessed individual, thank you michae- i mean darre- i mean jon

Lyrics 2 go from ATCQ has a sample in 3/4, and it works really well. More polyrhythmic than straight 4/4, but interesting example.
Man always knew you were an ill-producer on top of the raps but it's something else getting to watch you work. Much love!
Birds and the Beez- Schoolboy Q is 3/4
So is Diamond Dallas by Boldy James
Definitely some good ones
I also started on the PS2 with Ejay Clubworld! Now I like samplers and tape machines lol

Dope! I never got my head around how to make 3/4 beat...is it simply to actually go with a 6/8 beat? Cause that's what I count in the beat..
Some people are saying this is 6/8. It's all about whatever feels good to the source material.
It’s 6/8. The eighth note is what’s getting the beat, or “setting the pulse”. Definitely eighth notes, not quarter notes.
its technically 6/8. the best way to tell the difference is how you feel it. 3/4 splits the 6 eighth notes in 3 groups of 2, while 6/8 splits the eighth notes into 2 groups of 3.
3/4 : ONE two THREE four FIVE six
6/8 : ONE two three FOUR five six
but if you aren't writing sheet music for other musicians it doesn't really matter.
