Thanks for posting this! Everyone complains about playing Jump, Tom Sawyer, etc on anything Oberheim but I think it's important to do this, especially for the OB-X8. The OB-X8 is meant to sound as close as currently possible to the original Oberheims and the iconic sounds of these songs are ingrained in everyone's memory. This is a great demo to see just how close Oberheim has been able to get. Is the OB-X8 sound a perfect clone of the OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8? No, but it's close enough for most people. Is it a fantastic synth that sounds amazing? A resounding yes!
I completely agree with you, and I’m not an analog tweak guy, so I’m pretty sure that somebody who knew what they were doing to dial in that sawtooth better than I did and make it sound more spot on because there are several patches that are absolutely identical to the original hit songs, the one used on why can’t this be love is just thunder
I disagree. The Jump sound can be easily made on just about any analog synth and isn't really a good example of what an Oberheim can do. Accurately nailing the sounds of I'll Wait would be much more impressive. Or even Tom Sawyer. But not Jump.
@@Lamster66 Of course the sound isn't exactly the same. That would be impossible, because EVH didn't run direct to digital. EVH most likely ran through tube pres/eqs/compressors/etc.. to tape. And when mixing, probably more sweeteners/stereo expanders/etc...
@@Lamster66 funny you should say that, since I own a cigar store. REgarding the patch: This was literally day one of owning the keyboard, and the patch is one I created from scratch, and I have zero experience programming, so the patch isn't spot on. I dont have an Oberheim but a bike and with that bike I cycle past Eddy's parental home every day here in Amsterdam and when I jump with that bike it gives the same sound
Nice job! But he uses the higher octave on the bottom in the chorus. Plus the sound should decay slowly. Listen to the top of this song and you’ll hear the bottom notes decay so the top stabs pop out more 👍🏼 These adjustment plus a tiny bit of portamento would make it 100%.
You’re right about the higher octave I forgot to do that because it’s been years, but I don’t believe the decay that you are talking about is in the patch, I believe that’s an audio illusion created by the heavy reverb in the original, in the studio my Reverb sounded super heavy over the headphones but somehow it does not sound heavy at all in this vid
Fantastic job! I just received my OB-X8 yesterday and I was extremely disappointed to find that a proper patch for Jump was not pre-programmed. I’m not very good at programming. Would you consider sharing your “patch sheet” or better yet showing how you dialed this patch in?
I’m happy to share however I can, if there’s a way to send you the SYSEX I’m happy to do it but I honestly don’t know what I did beyond twist the knobs at random and push buttons at random until things started sounding closer to what I thought they should, you have to remember there’s actually a large amount of reverb on the patch because I still don’t think I’ve dialed it into where it needs to be but it’s close
I’ve been playing in writing all my life but I’ve never been a tweak head on since and I still don’t understand how analog synthesis works, my entire life has been spent by and killer sound modules and then just modifying presets to my taste but never actually building anything from scratch that’s beyond me right now
Hey man I was doing some further tweaking and I discovered that if you take the basic brass patch from the OBXa bank, You can get a much better and in my opinion thicker sound for this patch
It really sucks that Wolfgang refuses to play VH stuff in his band Mammoth WVH. But that is his decision. He played Panama and Hot for Teacher this year at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert.
