Brilliant Rich, thanks for the channel plug. You made an excellent group member and are welcome back anytime 👍
Thanks Simon, you are welcome. It was a great day and would love to come again
Fran looks adorable in her rain gear!
Haha, I am definitely a raincoat kind of gal!
Wow, the algea and weeds on the water. We're enjoying your cruising. Take care.
Winnie Wallace...Thank you Fran for that information about chestnuts. Just another gem from you,you cleaver lady .
You are so welcome!
What beautiful country. Thank you so much.
Great vlog as always. Been an absolute pleasure meeting you. Well said Rich about the weed. Enjoy further travels x
We hope to see you out and about one day
We went through two summers ago. It was a bit weedy in places but there were a lot more boats on the move which helped. There have been so many closures on the canal though recently which have greatly reduced boat numbers. It does show how the boats affect the wellbeing of the canals in a positive way. No amount of walkers or cyclists on the towpath are going to keep the water moving which is so necessary for the wildlife to survive. Another vote of thanks here to the Wigan Flight Crew.
Absolutely agree about the benefit moving boats have on the canals. I guess it is a bit of a chicken and egg situation
Hi only just viewed this film and it was a joy to watch a great all round slice of your lives . Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
The Dogs are Fab
Rich's first photo take the prize.
Really enjoyed this video, shame about all that weed. Loved the section out doing photography in the woods and I love it when you both have a chat inside the boat. Sweet chestnuts…now we know what to look for, thanks you two. Px
It was all worth it to have some great company at the end of our journey xx
those shops looked amazing!
What a stunning place to do photography!
Those horse chestnuts are also called Buckeyes here in US. 😊 Ohio is called the Buckeye State...not sure why. They may have bunches of them growing. 🤔
Fantastic photos, Rich! Fran those two shops looked wonderful?
Rich, your photos are every bit as good as his!
What a compliment, thank you
Hi Vanessa, Well this Vlog was àn eye opener for you, hey. We enjoyed it immensely, look forward for your next one. Stay safe ❤xxx
Thanks so much, but I think you are confusing me with the vanessa from the mindful narrowboat 😊
Alright our kid and sis, great vid again. Loves ya xxxxx
Thank you bro, loves ya back
I have been waiting for you to do this canal, I was born near Wigan in Ashton-in-Makerfield but we left in 1974 and I have never been back to the UK.
I guess Wigan has changed quite a lot since then
So nice to have a Floating Video on my little mobile in Rome
A mate of mine lives on garstang marina. Two years ago it took about ten hours to get back from Lancaster. His boat had to be stopped every couple of miles to empty his raw water filter. It was a bloody nightmare
Great vlog. Love the way you two manage to smile at the end after getting through the hazards.
Glad it was out of the way I think
Years ago I was doing a canal trip with my Scouts on the Monmouthshire & Brecon canal near its southern end (Pontypool), the old limit of navigation. The weeds there were incredible, trying to go forward or back was hard going. My lads were only about 11 or 12 and we were doing what we called a CAKE money raising event. We only had access to 6 canoes plus mine for the leader, the plan was to CAnoe 6 miles, swap over then hiKE 6 miles back 12 participents. It went ok but for the dreaded weeds. You have my sympathy.
Oh dear, I guess the walkers were much faster
Just writing to show I apreciate your vlogs 🙂
Love from Denmark
Thank you so much and thank you for watching from Denmark
@@FloatingOurBoat I have no option, as I live in Denmark 😀
Punt intended
HI, Thanks for the video. Those shops were great! For us the weediest part was from Adlington to Wigan. It was a surprising anti-climax in the end with fewer than a dozen boats going down the 31st. The Wigan crew were excellent.
Glad you got down ok. We are not far behind you
@@FloatingOurBoatwe are staying in Nantwich for a while before we go onto the Llangollen.
We used to eat the sweet chestnuts raw, just peel off the outer skin and eat, the skin its self was really bitter but the nut!! Yum Yum. Loved the train set going around the shop, I WANT ONE.
I didn't know you could eat them raw. Something to learn every day. thank you
good vid on cut cranking it thanks lee
No problem 👍
Gosh I think they need a bit bigger machine to clear the weeds on that canal 😮 you did well to get through it Good Luck on your return journey ❤
Thanks 👍
I guess the fewer the boars, the greater the weed cover. Apart from that, a very watchable video
Hi Fran & Rich, so good to see you both! Jess & Archie are looking well, nice to see them running around, please give them a cuddle for me! Hope you made it through the locks okay & didn't have to wait too long. Wow those weeds! Rich you took beautiful photos...what a lovely, magical ancient woodland & hearing the birds chirping, so peaceful and calming! Have a wonderful rest of the week! Thank you so much for sharing, take really good care. Lots of love Kathy x 💖
Ancient woodlands are quite rare now, but this was a lovely place to be
I love your video's. I think Fran finding edibles along the way on the path walks is wonderful.😊
Thank you
Thanks so much for the ride along with you 😊
what a happy coincidence, I have been following Simon's channel for several years, as well as following your journey!
Cheers Richard
That is brilliant, thank you
Thank you both for sharing a great Vlog with us ❤we love you xxx
Go Buckeyes!
Lot of work with the weeds. Great photos Rich and thanks Fran for the tips.
Happy motoring ❤
Thanks for showing us your cool weather tips. That canal is very weedy indeedy !😊
Thanks for taking us along on this cruise to "Aggy" as the locals call it but it's a shame about the "Martian Weed", lol. It was really nice to see the doggies having a great time and Jess running along like a pup. I hope that you are all doing great. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Thank you
Ah bless ya, it doesn’t look very nice green water. It must be annoying. Lisa x❤
It was tough going
The green looks beautiful though…
I you too wot awful canal need to gat on top off the weeds on this canal good.look withe the cruise all.the best for now 😊
It was a really difficult canal to cruise through but thankfully the cold weather should mean the end of weed for this year. Thank you
I imagine the canal being so quiet made it even more weedy. Looked like pushing through thick pea soup with floating vegetables. Hope all went well with the huge number of locks and all their hidden scares.
Simons photos are beautiful abd what a beautiful forest and Rich your photos were beautiful as well …. just a nice area ….. 💞📚💞
Many thanks
You two are just wonderful. I did join Simon's channel. Thank you.
Wonderful!
Lovely video as always - so relaxing to watch. So glad CRT were clearing all that weed - it looks dreadful stuff! x
It's so good to see you two out and about, I remember last time ages ago you had a lot of weed, it's a shame the canals can't be aerated to help keep it back the weed and save the poor fish. Keep going. 😊
Sometimes when there are lots of fish dying in a small area they do aerate the canal but I guess this is too big an area
Rich, I love the first of your photos with the tree trunk 😍. And I enjoyed coming along with you. Much love to both of you and your dogs.
Thanks so much
Great video. Let’s hope this canal gets all cleaned up very soon. So sad to see it not being used to its best because of the weeds. Loved the cruise though and good to see the doggies so happy. Take care and we will hear how all these 23 locks work out for you.
Wow that weed is awful, such a shame and so sad to see dead fish. Always a great Vlog from both of you, thank you xxx
I forgot to comment on your Chorley excursion to ask if you visited Frederick's famous ice cream parlor. You have to queue for ages on a Sunday in summer!
Getting back to today's episode, I lived at White Bear marina for 18 months, in the late 90s, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and the woods. I bet you're not looking forward to the Wigan flight!! My record is 3hrs 45 mins!!
Sel N.Z
Unfortunately we missed out on the ice cream as the weather was really cold when we passed and we are not huge ice cream fans
Good to see little Jess bounding around again! 🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈⬛Glad you got through the weeds ok. Bit of a nightmare. Thankful never to have encountered such a weedy canal in my travels. Safe travelling. 😀
That stuff would make great compost!
Ah well, whatever floats your boat!! Try and get to Haigh Hall and park for a walk before you go down the flight.
We did have a short walk, but not as long as we would have liked
And ... your nowhere near WEEDON !? Couldn't resist it based on me used to live not far from Rugby.... travel safe young people... ✌️💛
😂
Makes excellent chook food.
Another good reason to get some chooks on a butty to tow along
@@FloatingOurBoat what ever floats your boat.
Great video again. Loved the photography. Glad you got down the flight safely - saw your boat pic on the Wigan flight crew page 👍. The Rail Weigh shop is a fab place
Yum yum chestnuts!! Lovely 😀💜
So might I be right in assuming you haven't boiled any pennywort, then? 😘 The shops look fabulous 😊
There are definitely limits to what I will try
@@FloatingOurBoat 😀
Well done , great vlog
Should look at a heat pump tumble dryers are quite low wattage for a tumble dryer.
No room for one and as low wattage as they may be I'm sure we would still need to run the engine in winter when power is low and that is when when we would need it most
…add a small amount of waste water spillage, an errant bit of nuclear material dumped into the canal and the strike of a lightening bolt and you’ll end up with a right scary monster that wanders the canal system.
Good Luck with the Locks and I'd love to see your art purchases !!!! X
Rich came back with a big smile on his face and a big bag despite claiming he didn't need any more stuff, but I'm sure you will understand that. He did put a picture of his purchases on instagram (Richy_P_Art) 😊
@@FloatingOurBoat WOWZERS, great Art and Craft on the website, I LOVE it 😍
What puts people off the L&L canal is the wigan flight is always damaged and closed. The CRT seem to spend more money down south than up north.
It's a shame really because it has some of the best scenery on the whole canal system.
Very true
That was quite a weedy canal stretch! Fortunately they were trying to clean it up because it is a pretty area. Those porcelain mushrooms on the ancient Beech tree were fascinating! Beautiful photography by Simon Booth and Rich too. We have chestnut trees in my neighborhood, which I think are horse chestnuts although I've seen the hedgehog pods around, so maybe we have the sweet chestnuts as well? Thanks for the tip about how one is poisonous and the other is good to eat. Otherwise, I'll buy mine at the grocery store. 🦔🌳 Have a good weekend. Jenny
Haha. always best to buy them if you are not sure, but the tassle is a give away
@@FloatingOurBoat I'll look for them on my next walk around my neighborhood.
Hi guys!
Weed has a habit of slowing you down, or does if it's any good. So I'm told. 😉
Love Rich's leaf photo.
All the best.
Haha, not the voice of experience then 😂
@@FloatingOurBoat I couldn't possibly comment. 😵💫🤭
Well, the weedy section wasn't very pretty, but it looks like you had a lovely visit once you got where you were going. I was very envious of the shops and the fall day spent taking photos.
Hello, you two, where have you been. I've been thinking too myself where's Fran and Rich ? And loll and behold there you are. I feel complete now. So how are you ? Besides the weed problem, you both look well. Keep up the vlogs, please. xx
Thank you, but we have still been putting up videos.
@@FloatingOurBoat time to back track then. Thank you
Hope you don't encounter too much weed on the way back.😊
Not seen the pennywort as bad as this year, really bad around Loughborough on River Soar. Trouble is they are attempting to shred it down with that machine but I notice the floaty bits that are left behind will just multiply. Stay safe and hope you got through Wigan flight ok
I think eack bit left behind regrows. It is such a problem now.
I've heard them locks arent too bad 😉😂
Are chestnuts sweet tasteing? Glad you both made it threw the green swamp. I realy enjoyed the picture mans pictures.God bless. Hi to the dogs.
They are slightly sweet.
@@FloatingOurBoat ok thanks
Probably need to invest in a scythe to clear all the weeds in front of the boat.
To me chestnuts are a part of vacations in the Mediterranean countries where you get them roasted in a cone, one cone a day could it get.
We also love them roasted in the stove
I wouldn't fancy eating that weed either, doesn't seem like a great idea especially with all those dead fish floating in it 😮😢
They need to get a Millfoil boat on that canal, it looks terrible. Don't park or it might start crawling up your boat 😅
Have you the about adding a wireless camera to the front hooked to an Ipad etc. ? Might be handy when you need it.
Rich on the bow is cheaper than a camera😂
You seemed a bit grumpy in this vid Rich, but perhaps justifiably so. So many locks in the next video.
Not grumpy, but it was a tiring stressful time
You can eat any plant, just some of them only once😂
😂
Only one thing for it, double the license fee 😮
I think circa 3k a year for the privilege of cruising the CRT network on a 58’ Nb is excellent value no?
Currently circa £24 per week, nice 😮
We wont argue with that actually. It is good value but it would go further if it was spent wisely.
And regrettably I’m not sure the CRT could be trusted to spend the xtra revenue wisely 😢
That's canal life unfortunately you take it as it comes,
I wonder if it could be dried and burnt in your stove
Interesting idea, would love to give that a go
Do the water companies the take from our systems and make massive profits give anything to the CRT
I don't think so generally, but I am not sure
That looks terrible!
now we know why those conkers didnt taste good ,,every day is a learning day ..🤮
😯
Its always a question if you dont use it you lose it. Its also not the fault of the Canal and River Trust, youve had exceptional weather conditions, some things thrive some things die, as water heats it loses oxygen, fish die sad but true. Put up the cost of your license so more weed eater boats can be bought then you have 4 or 5 summers of very little weed and see weed eaters sitting idle, wow what a waste of money they are. I love your vlogs and you have an idyllic lifestyle. It could be worse sitting in roadworks on a motorway breathing petrol and diesel fumes. I know which inconvenience I would prefer. Just Saying.
Absolutely agree about the traffic jams, would rather be on a weedy canal. We also agree that the licence fee currently is probably not enough for what we get in return, but it is annoying when we see so much money being wasted e.g. on signs for dogs saying ggrrrr woof woof!!!, rather that on someone clearing the weed. There is a weed clearer machine on this stretch sitting idle most of the time because there is nobody to operate it!
You need a sickle on a stick
This is what we pay our already exorbitant licence fee for….unnavigable canals with lovely flat towpaths for scumbags to drive their motor cycles up and down. CRT…lost their way
I dont actually think the licence fee is bad value considering how much it costs to keep repairing the system, but it is just annoying to see it being wasted so often and not being spent in the right places
