The manual crank start spun a flywheel, and once that heavy flywheel was up to speed, a lever was thrown and its gearmesh began turning the crank. Essentially, the flywheel had to be revved up. The engine is not backfiring, though. What it's doing is called a stuttering misfire, which was perfectly normal, these were war machines, not surgical instruments. Old engines ran rough, because they were cast or milled from iron, with heavy duty cranks and pistons, so from time to time they stuttered, just like any old farm tractor. However, this tank is running pretty darn good, for a gasser.
*The Tiger's driver usually just pushed the starter button in the driver's compartment to activate the fully automatic electric starter motor just like a modern car... the Bosch aircraft style inertia starter was only installed on early production models as an auxiliary back-up system... later models were issued with jumper cables just like Allied tank units were issued with.*
@fred If you want to be pedantic, the noise from the start is more likely to be an afterfire than backfire. Just before shutdown you can visually see that it is afterfiring at least at the end @steve It looks like ignition issues to you does it? Your last sentence never rang truer
doktorbimmer yes, but the problem with electric starters was the batteries back then. The casing was usually glass and they frequently broke, so indeed they needed a jump start from another vehicle. Also the batteries would fail with low temperatures. And there was the fire hazard from arcing in a compartment with a gasoline engine giving off fumes. So if I am informed correctly, all vehicles had the flywheel option installed.
Tino What do you define by 'shitty'? Try to compare the in-game sound with youtube videos and see if you can hear anything 'shitty' between the two. It's actually interesting how that engine starts, it's not backfiring obviously because the engine would no longer work after a backfire but it really isn't an afterlight either.
Some Toast - It's a Maybach engine, they could hiccup or choke a little while the other cylinders fired, they had 12 I believe. Markson Wilson that is not gore ejecting shells idk why it's there but the use for the hatch on the back of the turret is for loading shells into the ammo racks there

Probably for getting rid of spent casings during combat. Most modern tanks have a little hatch that opens\closes automatically. It can be plugged from the inside on the Königstiger of course.

There is a Königstiger in Switzerland that is under long term restoration since 2007 with the aim to restore it to working conditions.
Does this mean when the engine dies off some of the crew had to jump out and kickstart it like that ?
There is an electric starter motor for combat situation, but the main way is the inertial wheel .
Electric starter for emergencies, Inertial starter for standard
Also the electric starter wasn't that much availiable towards the end of the war so... yep, crews had to kickstart it manually with snow up their knees.
You could also start it with a Kübelwagen, if you got one avaliable
