That was the beauty of film! When viewed on VHS, the quality was terrible. But if you see it straight from film, the quality is excellent! And I totally agree with you, it looks absolutely beautiful.
The person above me is correct, all the films from this old era were filmed beautifully! plus a lot of these older films have been restored digitally. Not sure if that’s true for this particular film :)
filmed on film / Cinemascope. Scanned & Restored from original film-elementes - Warner Archive is releasing currently any classic musical and they looks awsome.
Oh my stars! My childhood crush, Russ Tamblyn, is in this movie?! I was in love with him when he played Gideon from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! He’s on screen @ 0:11.
Don't think I ever saw this one. I've seen lots of Deb's films. I really got a laugh with Tammy and the Bachelor. She was a whiz dancing in Bundle of Joy. Bless her heart, truly a beautiful person inside and out.
Considering that this was a "B" picture for MGM, and that the whole studio system was collapsing around them, this is a very entertaining film. Maybe even moreso than critical faves like An American In Paris.
It was not a B. The budget, color and widescreen prove otherwise. MGM was trying to establish a new stock company after Eddy and Macdonald faded, Garland crashed, Eleanor Powell retired, Esther Williams became waterlogged, Kelly grew pretentious and Fred slowed down. The easy profits of the wartime boom in musicals and the lack of new faces (too many in the service) meant that it had to play catch-up. Keel, Grayson, the Champions, Debbie, Mitzi Gaynor, Jane Powell and others were prepped to take over the genre forward. But the economics of the business after vertical integration was broken, depletion of audiences by TV and the upsurge of rock 'n' roll- which did not suit these performers- became insuperable obstacles. Moreover, the rise of independent production and the end of long-term contracts made it hard to maintain the lavish backup facilities through which talent was groomed at Culver City. As the powerhouse of concentrated production, with steep overheads, Metro had furthest to fall when the economics went wrong. By the end of the Sixties it was in ruins.
This was no B picture. Every musical star at MGM who was still under contract seemed to be in this film. The budget at 2 million...a lot of money in those days..
@@jackjules7552 This was a B picture as it wasn't produced by the Freed unit and was produced at a time when musicals were falling out of favour and MGM was not putting the time or money into them. The only reason it had so many stars was that these second-stringers were otherwise unoccupied. The budget was similar to others at the time.
More of Debbie's great dancing - and remember that she had just been taught by Gene Kelly for 'Singin' in the Rain'. She was accomplished, delightful and a real beautie. God Bless.. RIP
I presume Russ wasn't doing what he was supposed to in this "rehearsal", but of course in reality it was all very well rehearsed to achieve what's seen here.
One of the three sailors looks very much like Harold Lang or Pal Joey fame, however he is un-credited and it is not listed in his filmography, so I must be wrong. Ernie Flatt also danced in this movie but I don't know what he looked like. Russ Tamblyn, of course, he was great!
Already in use in Hollywood since the mid-1930s for mixing, but cinemas weren't wired widely until after WW2. The first commercial stereo LPs did not come out till 1958, yet Bell Labs had cut experimental discs in 1931-32. Inventions do not always take off quickly.
Amazing, Anyway, I'm quite impressed how this simple musical movie describe the woman role of that time, how different is this from nowadays, and how it was totally normalized ( and even made funny of it) that 4 mariners stalk Debbie. As I said before, it was part of that era, that is what makes it interesting.
Totally agree! I mean, it makes you really think about how entertainment industries evolved from classics to feel good movies. Although there are still plenty of awesome movies, it just makes you wish that there was something more to them 😅
