Randy’s father, Bill, was the band teacher at Memorial Middle School in Middlebury CT back in the 70’s then remarried after divorcing Delores. Bill’s second wife was the chorus teacher. I was fortunate enough to be in the chorus and see Randy when he would visit his Dad and Step Mom. When he passed away in 1982 there was a special memorial service in the Middlebury Congregational church that we all attended. The main service was back in San Bernardino where his mom lived and Randy is buried in the San Bernardino cemetery.
Even Metallica admitted that their first few records were filled with Randy riffs and solos. He wrote the book for the genre, two of the greatest metal records of all time, for sure. Long live Randy. Glad Ozzy thanked him last month at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame award ceremony

Randy's mausoleum is here in San Bernardino, CA. I stop by every couple years and pay my respects. Probably my favorite guitarists of this era. Randy was the first guitarist that I really got into and listened to intently. He changed how I listen to music. There was something very special about the songs he wrote and how he played live. He was surrounded by good musicians for writing and other good musicians for touring. I think they all pushed each other to achieve something great and the results speak for themselves.

I met Ozzy and the band in 1981. Nicest bunch of guys you’ll ever meet. I was 17 years old and sat by Randy on the bus most of the night. Extremely nice man. RIP

I turned 13 in '81 and Ozzy was my Idol at that time. The pool of talent in the 80s was so deep! We will never see musicianship like that ever again!
This is primo Ozzy and nothing beats his first 2 solo albums with Randy Rhodes on sizzling lead guitar. Absolutely great Ozzy, he also just went into the RR HoF and so deserves it a 2nd time after Black Sabbath in 2006. I knew from the first song on Sabbath's first album that Ozzy Osbourne waz not your typical Rock Vocalist or Frontman, he was a one man riot on stage back in the day, getting the crowd whipped into a frenzy and one of Rock's greats.Sabbath shows were hardcore and intense back in the 70s, the bands they played with would blow your minds, like Blue Oyster Cult, Mountain, Kiss, Judas Preist, Motorhead and others helped blow our heads clean off in the days of no ear protection and stacks and stacks of amps and cabinets to make the volume a physical presence all its own. We saw all these great shows for $5.00 to $6.50 standard price until the early 80s when prices started creeping up, by the 90s concerts were becoming expensive. But we had Ozzy to lead us on the best musical trip you could want. Thank God for Ozzy Osbourne! Enjoy. 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶🔥

4:56 The white guitar in the stand behind Randy: The OG Concorde. On December 23, 1980, while on a break from Ozzy’s Blizzard of Ozz tour, Rhoads visited Grover Jackson at his workshop at Charvel HQ. The guitarist pulled out a sketch he’d drawn on a cocktail napkin and asked Jackson to build him a guitar that looked something like a shark’s fin. The pair sat down, and by midnight, the design Randy had conceived was completed and ready to be built. The resulting white, angular, asymmetric ax was nicknamed “the Concorde” as it looked like the supersonic airliner of the same name - although legend has it that Rhoads named the guitar after the aircraft because he actually flew home (from the U.K.) aboard the Concorde in late 1980.

Ozzy said in an interview once that he was playing a part. That the world isn't the fairy tail we were told as children. And that someone has to warn the kids. That's the role he has taken his entire life. I thank him for that.

I love watching Randy because you can tell by his fretting fingers shows his classical training. Often overlooked Rudy Sarzo on bass keeps everything solid. This is a "classic" must see Rock video. When Randy played in a city he would look up a guitar teacher there and would get a lesson from that teacher.

One of the coolest things I thought about Randy was in one of his interviews he said that when he was on tour with Ozzy, that whichever city they would be booked to play in, he would go and find the best guitar teacher in that area and book one lesson. He was signing autographs in one city somewhere and he said that he couldn't sign a lot of them because he didn't want to be late for his lesson. When he was asked why he did this, he answered: "You might just find out something new". Hey, your stuff is amazing, putting me in touch again with stuff I've heard over the years but didn't really think about. So, thank you. I have a suggestion: "We Are Not Helpless" by Stephen Stills. It's the closer to his first solo album, in 1970, an album that's been on my list of essential listens for more than 50 years. There are other gems on the record, sure, but "We Are Not Helpless" rises above them all.
This is one of the only times I recommend a live version over the studio and the studio version is of course awesome. The drummer is Tommy Aldrich who has performed with a bunch of acts. Sam, you want some Dracula vibes, then seriously check out Nosferatu by Blue Oyster Cult.

I saw Ozzy and Randy in Sep. '81. I was 15 and that show was a life changing experience for me. Sadly, 6 months later Randy was gone. I was devastated. 😢🙏My second Ozzy concert was May '82 with Brad Gillis on guitar. It was a makeup show due to cancelling the April '82 concert date because of Randy's tragic death. BTW, there were three songs recorded live for this TV show "After Hours" in the studio show. I Don't Know, Suicide Solution and Mr. Crowley. Mr. Crowley was played a bit too slow compared to the album. I still have this "After Hours" show I recorded on VHS. 😁

Hey, your stuff is amazing, putting me in touch again with stuff I've heard over the years but didn't really think about. So, thank you. I have a suggestion: "We Are Not Helpless" by Stephen Stills. It's the closer to his first solo album, in 1970, an album that's been on my list of essential listens for more than 50 years. There are other gems on the record, sure, but "We Are Not Helpless" rises above them all.
_Diary of a Madman_ (the song) is super spooky and eerie.
This is one of the only times I recommend a live version over the studio and the studio version is of course awesome. The drummer is Tommy Aldrich who has performed with a bunch of acts. Sam, you want some Dracula vibes, then seriously check out Nosferatu by Blue Oyster Cult.

The drummer is none other than Tommy aldridge, legendary drummer. And the bass player is Rudy Sarzo, of Quiet Riot fame. He also played in whitesnake with Tommy.

I saw Ozzy and Randy in Sep. '81. I was 15 and that show was a life changing experience for me. Sadly, 6 months later Randy was gone. I was devastated. 😢🙏My second Ozzy concert was May '82 with Brad Gillis on guitar. It was a makeup show due to cancelling the April '82 concert date because of Randy's tragic death. BTW, there were three songs recorded live for this TV show "After Hours" in the studio show.
I Don't Know, Suicide Solution and Mr. Crowley. Mr. Crowley was played a bit too slow compared to the album. I still have this "After Hours" show I recorded on VHS. 😁

Randy Rhodes was one of a few guitarists whose could actually make a guitar sing. The word legend gets thrown about a lot but in Randy Rhodes case there's no other word. RIP.
