I have always gone *away* from me - it's faster. Of course, it might be because that is what I'm used to. Never put the peels in the disposal ... it can wreck the machinery. My peeler is quite plain - stainless and the blade goes both ways - which is good because I'm ambidextrous. I also grate potatoes by hand on the same grater my mom used. It gives the 'just right' consistency.

He says multiple times in the video you can peel either way...you just get more control peeling toward yourself. I have always peeled away, too, but the peelings go everywhere. My dog doesn't mind that :)
I never considered peeling toward myself with a potato peeler for whatever reason, even though I do it with a paring knife. Going to try it out next time I peel some taters.

JW Musgrove Europeans peel away from themselves. If you buy a right handed peeler made in Germany, it only works if you peel towards yourself. If you want a German made peeler, for your right hand, to peel away from you, then you have to buy a “left handed” one. I believe a lot of Europeans peel this way. We Americans peel away, so there is a cultural difference.
