Hi everyone! Hope you'll enjoy this one, I'm happy with how it turned out. I'm going on holiday soon so I'll try to pre-record a few videos. Consider subscribing, we're almost at 500!
Maaan, as I saw the thumbnail, I thought Michael League was reactin to his own music. >_
Ahah awesome! I get that a lot
Michael League is the bandleader period,he writes a lot of the material & arranges everything. He's an awesome bandleader & bass player.
The visibility of your musical apprehension is so clear and satisfying, especially when the vocal aahhhs come in and then you reckon with just how visceral the musical moment really is, with both drummers. Older reactors tend to have more defenses and discontinuity between moments of emotional vulnerability. So, two things. First, thank you. Second, be careful with yourself, but don't ever let artifice creep in, because you're a diamond.
That is a really awesome comment to read man. Musical apprehension is weird eh? On one hand I'd like to think I did something to perceive music that way, but I would probably not love it this much, had my parents not played stuff to me when I was a toddler composer. I'm not used to seeing the literal way I hear music as something people can appreciate, but I'm glad you do.
It's weird, because I completely understand what you mean by your recommandations, even though they could seem out of place in that type of comment. I'm thinking about that a lot. We'll see how it goes. Thank you for looking out
the mode is actually a mode of a harmonic minor scale which is where that minor second comes from
Two more Snarky Puppy selections:
1. “Something” ft. Lalah Hathaway
Family Dinner #1
2. “Don’t You Know” ft. Jacob Collier
Family Dinner #2
That sounds great I actually want to do more snarky puppy. as usual no promises and it will take time
Your face from from 12:50 when the whole things just drops is why I keep watching all the Snarky Puppy reaction videos :)
The director/editor is in love with the cello girl!
Aren't we all?
If you notice not one player has a sheet of music in front of him. This band are all top notch musicians.
Always nice to see Chick, John and Dave playing, even if only for a moment :-)
I never knew the song was by Chick Corea before looking it up yesterday. I learned it a long time ago, this band is sick as hell
Ha! Never thought of that connection to 'Dream Brother', but you're actually quite right... Well spotted!
Thanks! That song really left its mark on me I guess. Sometimes I wish I had been around in the 90's to witness the Jeff live. Such a weirdo
Loved this reaction! Larnell is a beast on the drums here. If you haven't already, you should definitely check out Larnell Lewis at Zildjian live, its AMAZING!
Sounds good! The list is getting longer. It will take me a while to get there! Tank you for the comment and have a good one
@@TanguyBlanchard No problem! 😊
SUCH a joyous arrangement and one that seems to have filled you with joy once Larnell started pelting those drums at the end .
:)
Oh yes. When compositions change as much as this one, the usual 'building the song up to a climax' is even more satisfying
Seeing you smile and just vibe in that ending sequence is exactly how I feel every time I hear this song.
It's awesome!
Man that trumpet player has such a beautiful tone!
He does. I wish I could talk about everything! Those 'bends' he did were great
@@TanguyBlanchard they are, and bending like that on a trumpet is pretty hard I think (I'm a woodwind player so I've never tried it personally). None of us deserve our brass players.
@@pelicans456 that stuff makes me want to buy a wind instrument tbh. Would probably help with the singing as well because of breath management! cheers xx
Larnell Lewis is inhuman! Check out his City Lights solo, my jaw reaches the floor every time
Alright! Don't know that I'm technical enough to really break down a drum solo, but I'll check it out for my own interest for sure
Imagine sitting in the audience watching them live. Such a great feel good experience
Oh yeah that would be a blast. They look just as happy as the musicians
13:20 That might be the single most groovy bass lick I've ever heard in my life also.
Oh yeah for sure. I think I caught that while watching back, so much going on in the mix!
Please react to the curtain feat. Metropole Orchest!! Long song but a masterpiece.
Alright, added to the list!
oh god yes!
6 years old but still fresh as hell
Agree, impressive masterpiece. Please react
Respect! Thank you for the insight! Also I love your smile 😃
Thank you! Have a good day
I believe it was a 7 hour flight plus a 2 hour rehearsal. They may have done two takes for the album, but if I'm not mistaken he learned the whole album in those 9+ hours.
Bruv that is insane. I've started listening to more and every song seems at least as intricate at this one
I love Snarky Puppy so I quite often watch reaction videos just to see more of the band :-)
Many reactors seem intent on killing my joy but I like your videos. Good work.
Thanks a lot man!
I’ve watched about 40 reaction videos to Snarky Puppy and this one really made me smile… so insightful. You bring a different approach to your commenting that is very thoughtful and refreshing. For example, I’ve often thought about the lack of ego demonstrated regularly by these band mates, but I’ve never heard it articulated in an analysis. Keep doing your thing. Subscribed. (By the way, I was thinking “Phrygian” mode, too.)
Hey, thank you! I definitely have a lot to learn so your comment is much appreciated.
The bass player, Mike League, is the composer and band leader.
Yeah that's nuts! I keep learning about this band
All the tracks from this set are great, but you should check out the Family Dinner collections
I might as well. I think we'll be talking about Snarky Puppy for a while
you should try "binky" by them
If it's on We Like It Here I'll do it!
Oh man, loved your comment about Corey Henry and the fact that those
guys can put their ego aside, going from top notch solo on a song to the
most simple 4 notes playing on the next. About that, you see Shaun Martin ? You
know, the guy that is so amazed by Corey's solo on Lingus that he drops
is helmet ? Well, I look forward to your reaction of Sleeper, from the
same album... Also, did you count "un deux trois quatre cinq" ?
Francophone maybe? Si c'est le cas, super chaîne et continue :)
I did count that! Awesome you caught it. Je suis Français. Born and raised. Merci beaucoup! (edit : the Sleeper reaction is out!)
First time listener, and the fact that you mentioned Jeff Buckley made me sub ❤️🔥
Ey thank you! I have a couple reaction videos about Jeff. Maybe if you just joined the channel consider ignoring tomorrow's video :ooo
It's funny you look like Michael League! 😂
Well he's a good looking fella. Thanks a lot!
Check out Snarky Puppy featuring Lalah Hathaway doing "Something" It kills.
Added to the list!
Snarky puppy react= subscribe. Amazing group. Also check out Binky and What About Me by them as well.
EDIT: I just took a look at some of your vid titles as a new sub and you are a human of taste lol. Look forward to diving in
Thank you! I'm gonna do the whole We Like It Here album. Thank you for the compliment! Have a good time
so the plane ride larnell took was 7 hours. he was then able to rehearse for 2 hours before they started recording. he went straight from the airport right to the recording studio. mans a beast
That's why you never just 'know how to read' I guess. There are levels to this :D
It would be great if you'd react to this, you know... from a compositional standpoint. Talk about the key, how they're using it (traditionally vs non, etc). Even a basic breakdown of the chord structure would be great information for other young composers.
I get that! Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. I think I touched on it a bit in this video, but this is frankly too complicated of a composition for me to grasp it enough on the first listen, so I didn't go deeper into it for that reason
Great reactions man. Nice to see reactions that add something of their own to the songs and especially being honest about your knowledge and experience, and not trying to fake it 'til you make it👍
I would really love it if you coult check out Snarky Puppy and the Metropole Orkest collab album Sylva. It rarely gets viewed, but in my opinion it's their best one yet.
The whole album is pure fire, but The Curtain (ruclips.net/video/jLRw-Ahq22k/видео.html) would be the best one to start off with. Also, if possible, the pair Flight and Atchafalaya are amazing, but must be listened to together.
And about Larnell, the flight from the US to Europe was around 7 hours and he learnt most of the songs on the album on the plane. He mentions it on Drumeo's video where he listenes a song once and plays it amazingly right after.
Cheers from Finland!✌️
Thank you! Well there is always a somewhat clickbaity aspect to this type of videos, I don't live off of composing so it's a little misleading to say 'young composer' in the first place. Once people are in for the ride I try to be as real as possible. Trying to find the balance y'know. I will check out The Curtain
Almost the entire first section up to the trumpet solo, to my understanding, is based on two chords: Ami6 and B7. You could say that that is in E minor, and that it is a constant unfinished resolution of IV and V7. But right in the next section that V7 becomes the keynote. So, to my understanding, it would be more accurate to say that it is based on the B altered Phrygian scale (V of the harmonic minor scale). It is a characteristic sound of eastern european, indian, middle eastern, music.
I don't hear the Am before the trumpet solo tbh. I consider the whole thing to be in some mode of B in that first section (apart from key change) and the Em serving as iii
I actually believe the main composer on this song was Justin Stanton(trumpet soloist). But of course Michael and the other members contribute. Since you are a guitarists I would recommend Jambone from this same album. Its one that noone reacts to.
Thanks. I think I’ll do the whole album
Greetings Tanguy, you seems happy while doing those vids, i'm glad to see it. Didn't know that song from snarky puppy, realy cool tune ! Concerning that oriental scale you're talking about, it sounds like a B Phrygian major scale aka B Myxolydian b9 b13 ( but I might be wrong ). It is the fifht mode of the minor harmonic scale ( here it would share the same notes as the E harmonic minor scale ). Good vid anyway =)
As for suggestion, i would recommend "Flesh and the power it holds" by Death. It is some metal music though so I don't know if you will like it ( or if people wanna watch you listening to metal ), but I find this piece really interesting. Have a good holyday sir.
Awww man I want to get up to speed with that modal stuff. Mickaël taught you well! I'm pretty sure I looked up 'death' on Spotify once and heard their most popular track (of course they're a metal band), I'll do that one for sure. The RUclips algorithm has its ways so I'm not too worried about diversity. We'll see what sticks! Thank you so much man. I am having fun. Today was a good day too
Did you react to any Dirty Loops songs? There are a lot to gift yourself with haha
no, I just started making reactions tbh! only 7 videos. I will check them out
@@TanguyBlanchard here's the main 5 I think ...
Work Shit Out
World on Fire
Breakdown
Rock You
Next to You
After this yiu could check out their covers of pop pop songs from Britney and Justin XD lol (don't worry they sound miles better) 🔥
Hi, great reaction and comments I appreciate. I recommend you to listen Neo Funk by Anthony Brancati with Larnell on drums it’s really cool !!
Thank you! Alright I'll add that to the list
☺👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Merci!!!
Don't make assupumtions, bro. Larnell (although he CAN read and write music) learned the WHOLE SESSION in flight just LISTENING to the music that was sent to him from Michael.
For the most part, I really like listening to your commentary (or reaciton) to the music. You KINDA know your place in the scheme of things: you seem not to put yourself in the categories of those you're reacting to. So it REAL to ME. Just don't over-step your lane when it comes to critiquing others who have WAAAAY MORE experience than yourself. ESPECIALLY on a PUBLIC platform.
Idk how to answer that.
@@TanguyBlanchard No answer is required, bro. I didn't pose a question. Just trying to impart a little wisdom is all.
@Nathaniel Lollis thank you for the wisdom then. Really wasn’t trying to belittle Larnell in any way. I didn’t look up the story myself and just heard he ´learned it on the plane’, assumed he read it from that point on
I just discovered your channel, and I really like it. You know music a lot deeper than I do, and your comments are very enlightening. Not as a criticism, but as a tip, it really pokes the listener with a knife when you use God's name in vain. I know it is easy to fall into habits like that, but if you could weed it out of your vocabulary it would do well for both you and for the listener. Keep up the good work! Your channel is great!
