  • In this video I replace the rear brake pads, rotor, and caliper on a 2011 ford f550.

    One of the best how-to mechanical videos I’ve seen. Thank you. I’ve been a mechanic 15 years and won’t ever know it all. You helped me get our rollback back in service today.

    Great video. I always make a scratch mark om the axle flrange and its corresponding alignment on the hub. I don't know if this makes any difference in preventing leaks, but was taught this in 1970. I also make a similar scratch mark on the driveshaft where it mates the pinion flange when removing the shaft. (not relevant for this video). I know may youtube mechanics think this is a waste of time, but old habits die hard. Thanks for introducing me to Asher Fulero's music. Kind regards, Craig

      I usually try and put the drive shaft back where it was when it came off and in a situation where the axles seal on the flange I try and put them back too out of habit. If there’s a high spot from rust or something I like them to match up. This axle seals on the inside and I cleaned the axle flange so in this situation I don’t think it would matter. I do try and put them back where they were most of the time.

    This is how repair videos should be made. I see way too many YT'rs not do any research on OE repair information and then instruct people to make careless mistakes. Literally the last video I watched on this repair the guy used a pneumatic wrench to install the hub to disk bolts and claimed the bolts should be around 250+ Ft lbs!

      I haven’t seen that before. I would call the dealer and ask the parts department either for the part number or if they have them. If you can get a part number you can search them online and might be able to find them. Have you tried rockauto.com? They usually have a lot of parts and you might see them there.

      I believe 11-16 are the same and the 450 and 550 are as well. The only thing that might be different is the axle nut torque or some of the part numbers if you have a different axle. I think it’s the same though. The 350’s down are different with some of the specs.

    Like the music at the end of the video. Wonder if they make a replacement hub with an oil fill hole in it like the hub you put on the other truck?

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  3 года назад

      I don’t know if they do. Sometimes they have you pack the bearings with grease until the oil can get over into the hub from normal driving. I think that you can do that with this truck, but I opted to lift the one side to get it over the way I did. I know my dodge says to grease the bearings but the chevys don’t. They have the same axle so it’s weird one say to and not the other.

    Hey Jason: Have you rebuilt many Ford brake calipers? I normally don't rebuild customer's calipers because I can generally find decent re-mans at NAPA and a few others places. My problem came on my own service truck, a 2013 F350 Superduty. For some reason, that NAPA can't explain to me, remanufactured are not available for my truck's rear wheels. I have to buy new... for $197 EACH. Fortunately, the piston bores were good and the bleeder screws came out without trouble, so I figured I'd try one of the NAPA rebuild kits. Long story short, everything went together really well. I might be willing to try it on a customers, but I don't have any track record to judge by. Just wondered your thoughts?

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  3 года назад

      I haven’t rebuilt any calipers because like you I have always been able to get them. With most things I figure someone rebuilds them there’s no reason I can’t. I might try one next time to see how it goes. I would say with something like brakes there’s going to be a liability on them and if you rebuild them your going to hold the liability for them if something goes wrong. For the difference in price I wouldn’t want the responsibility personally.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  3 года назад

      I first hooked them in the caliper bracket and then grabbed them on the end so I had the long part of the arm and the little hook at a 45 degreeish angle so I could twist the end down at the same time. It can be a little tricky. There should be little recessed holes they stick into to keep them from popping out.

    Any info on how to hold the pinion yoke on a 2006 F450 to remove the pinon nut?

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  2 года назад

      I would use an impact gun and it might help. Or if the axle is still in the vehicle put the wheels on the ground or hold the brakes. I would think an impact gun should get it off though. I’ve used big pipe wrenches to hold the yokes before and brace the handle against the ground or put a jack under the handle. I haven’t had to deal with getting the flat flange type off yet.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  Год назад +1

      There are two axles listed in the manual I have one is a Dana axle which it says to torque hub nut to 70ftlbs, back off 90 degrees, then torque to 18ftlbs. The other axle is a ford axle and says torque hub nut to 70ftlbs, back off 180 degrees, then torque to 15ftlbs. It has a note to apply inward pressure to disengage the ratchet mechanism on the hub nut. It looks to depend on which axle you have but both are pretty close and both are full floating axles. They should work for your vehicle.
