Emma, I got news this morning that my grandmother passed away and this whole day I’ve been up on my room, trying to come to terms with my grief. This video and your channel in general have calmed my anxiety in exam season, muffled my loneliness after moving to a new country, and kept me company in moments of struggle. Now, you are filling the silence of my room with your voice, talking about books and helping me take one step at a time through life. I know many people can relate and I would like to thank you for creating a safe space in a corner of the internet.
so I read “I’m thinking of ending things” because I randomly found it and it’s kind of a spooky read. It’s more unsettling and there’s a little bit of gore if you’re interested :)
Am I the only one who has my notes ready when I'm watching Emma's videos? Like every time she says she likes a book I just immediately list it down T-T
Ooh, I don't know anything about Angela Carter's story, but "Erlkönig" (The Erlking) is a very famous Goethe poem that got quite wonderfully set to music by Franz Schubert. (I would recommend any recording by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.)
@@tina.InTheSkyWithDiamonds Fischer-Dieskau is wonderful : I have a DVD of his Schubert recital. So too is Fritz Wunderlich who appeared at the Edinburgh Festival in the 1960s (Mozart's The Magic Flute) and died afterwards in Germany in a tragic accident. Listen to Wunderlich sing Schubert, RUclips.
The Monk is one of my favourite books of all time, but a very self-conscious favourite that I don’t tell other people about because of how violent and atrocious the acts perpetrated by the monk and Matilda are. But it’s one of the best examples of the horror subcategory of the Gothic and very much reflective of the anxieties of the highly Protestant British people at the time, who were witnessing from across the pond the French Revolution. So happy to see my favourite booktuber giving it a chance!
I just want to say that your videos bring so much happiness and peace into my life. They calm my anxious thoughts and allow me a space to breathe so thank you. Also you’ve inspired me to read more classics and to apply to study English at university. Love your videos
emma: mentions the erl king my brain: Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind? Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind.. The poems I had to learn by heart in school are going to haunt me until the end of time
For me that was Rilke. "Befiehl den letzten Früchten voll zu sein, gib ihnen noch zwei südlichere Tage, dränge sie zur Vollendung hin und jage die letzte Süße in den schweren Wein." Pretty much the only poem I still can recite.
Der Erlkönig is such a cool poem but every time I hear it I remember being forced to perform it alone in front of the whole class and the anxiety that came with it 😭😅
"Mein Vater, mein Vater und siehst du nicht dort Erlkönigs Töchter am düsteren Ort?" Oh my, Erlkönig...one of the spookiest poems in German literature. It haunted me a long time after we had to memorise it in school....I like Goethe's Zauberlehrling more, although it is pretty dark as well...
I'm taking a class on Angela Carter, and especially this collection, this semester, and it's been the best class I've ever taken! It's amazing when you read it by yourself, but it's completely fascinating to study: there is sooo much intertextuality, and Carter is basically a genius. It's nice to see you love it :)
Hi Emma, just popping in to inform you of another recently released Phantom of the Opera retelling since you are always up for one: Phantom Heart by Kelly Creagh. She had previously released Nevermore series which is a sort of retelling of Edgar Allen poe stories. I really had fun reading that series back in the day.
Just pausing the video to recommend modern writers who are similar in style to Angela Carter: Kirsty Logan, Julia Armfield, Ha Seong-nan, Carmen Maria Machado, Cassandra Parkin (specifically her New World Fairy Tales), Deidre Sullivan, Alice Thompson (particularly The Book Collector). You might also enjoy my books The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night and The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers. Heading back to the video now for more cosiness. xx
My fav spooky book is Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo. Gabriel García Márquez was influenced by that book in the writing of One Hundred Years of Solitude. I think you’d like it.
I read The Bloody Chamber and absolutely FELL IN LOVE with her writing, to the point where I'm doing my Honours Dissertation, (and hopefully, my Master's thesis), on her. If you're looking for a book similar to The Bloody Chamber, there's nothing quite like it, that's the standout in her whole literary canon. However, Shadow Dance, (Honeybuzzard in the US) and The Magic Toyshop are very Gothic books, and Nights at the Circus is an incredible historical fiction with some Gothic elements thrown in. If you can find them, I think you will love all of these stories! Happy Reading.
Emma, I adored this vlog! I hope your studies are going well at the moment x Themed-vlog idea: Reading the original texts/books of your favourite films? I'd be interested on your thoughts about the whole 'movie vs book' debate and would love to see you talk about your favourite stories. My little film student heart would love it too!
Emma, your videos are so relaxing! They help with my anxiety ❤ I started a new job and it's been kinda hard, so thank you for providing a nice space to get away from the real world for a little bit 🐿
The Houseguest: And Other Stories by Amparo Davila is an entertaining yet strange spooky read. I like her spooky perspective on non supernatural events.
So glad your reading The Monk at the moment! It's still my favourite book. I'm currently reading through Melmoth the Wanderer. I can tell you that it has the same creepy vibe as The Monk has. It's great so far, it's bloody spooky. Though Melmoth is a bit of a chonker. A review on Amazon called it Melmoth the Meanderer which, honestly, made me want to read it even more haha!
I literally go to the description box, almost each video and take a screenshot of the list of books. lol that is not helping my internal storage on my phone lol, time to move to pen and paper. Love these emma :)
So excited to see you read Angela Carter! I've read "The Passion of the New Eve" and i don't remember much but that I found it very atmospheric and that I wanted more of her writing! I should definitely read the bloody chamber soon I'm so excited for it now 🍁🌒✨
I have The Bloody Chamber next in my bedside pile of books, but I'm almost finished In the House in the Dark of the Woods by Laird Hunt which I think would fit your criteria. It's been compared to Angela Carter before, and it's quite an unsettling fairy tale. Lovely!
Perfect vlog, Emma! Love to see your enthusiasm with Angela Carter! I'm going for a walk, it's a sunny Spring day in Rio de Janeiro and i wish you a fantastic weekend! 🌼🦋🌻🐝💛
Still reading Proust. He has met an artist, one might even say a famous artist, and is spending time in his studio. I think that you would like this part because he's spending a lot of words describing the artist's landscapes. The language is very flowery. Lucy would like it too, I'd say, because one suspects that Proust influenced Woolf. Thx Emma
read the Bloody Chamber when i was a teen and it kinda ruined gothic fairytale retellings for me by being so good, nothing else can touch it. keep reading Carter, she's so great
House of Leaves is a book that im kinda obsessed with rn. Like just the vibe of it I am loving. There are mixed reviews abt it, but Im honestly loving it so far (started reading it this week)
I love Angela Carter’s fairy tales so much! Have you read the October Country by Ray Bradbury? Similar vibes to The Bloody Tower; like not so fairy tale esque but they definitely live on the same street 🧡
My spooky season-autumn season TBR is *way* too long for someone who generally reads 2-3 books a month. I'm about 5 books in but I'll have more free time at the end of the month so I'll try to get through as many as possible! I'm most excited for "Silver in The Wood" by Emily Tesh.
Always look forward to your videos Emma! I never thought scary books would actually, truly scare me, but this year I’ve been reading more horror / thrillers and wow! I picked up Mexican Gothic, Carrie, and currently The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, and there have been many scenes in each of these books that just terrified me 🤣
My Dark Vanessa is such a good book … But it isn’t Halloween scary. It’s really heavy and it makes you think. I can’t wait to hear your take on it. LOVE your vlogs!
A book I'm currently reading, House of Leaves, is supposedly one of the scariest books ever. I'm not far enough through to give my opinion on that, but it's a cosmic horror, which is a very cool and somewhat rare subgenre (fear of the unknown and the incomprehensible, lovecraftian).
Ahhh I almost never comment but Anne Rice is my bat signal so here I am crashing into your comments! Anne is my favourite author and her Vampire Chronicles are stunning. I think you'd love them 🖤 ps did you know she also writes about witches - the Mayfair witches books are perfect for spooky season 🧙♀️pps Jay Kristoff has also just done a vampire book and it is possibly my favourite book of the year!!
Aaah I love this whole video😌 I really really want to get The Bloody Chamber and The Monk now👀 I recently started Tender is the Flesh and it’s definitely terrifying as a concept which I’m loving, but I haven’t gotten through enough of the book to really vouch for it yet. Loving the importance of language in context of cognitive dissonance that the book underlines😌
I remember when I read Interview With A Vampire what struck me the most was the character of the child/woman vampire, something they couldn't possibly convey in the movie adaptation.Your cosy outdoor footwear is hilarious ❤️
There should be 2 perfumes made. One that smells exactly like fall and one that smells exactly like books! Aaaahhh 2 of my favorite scents ever! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️💚💚💚💚🧡🧡🧡🧡📙📙📙📙🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
There's a company called Demeter that makes one called Paperback. They were big in the 90s and early aughts. Gosh, I hope they're still around. I had one called Playdough, too! Amazing how spot on their scents are.
Hiii Emmaa !!! Today I saw Howl's moving castle and I owe it to you - its because of you I started watching Studio Ghibli !! I love you so much for it ...❤❤ I loved the movie thank you precious 🙈

I've been meaning to start The Bloody Chamber this month but I've been more in the watching mood and I also feel like I should finish other books before starting a new one. But I'm really excited to get to it, especially after seeing how much you love it! I also have The Company of Wolves (1984) film that I'll be watching sometime afterwards. I'm excited to see that too, even though it looks kind of cheesy. It seems like it will align with my taste and it's from Neil Jordan, the same director of Interview With The Vampire, which I love!! And speaking of Interview, you mentioned it in a previous video and from the way you spoke about it I thought you had read it. But here you name it as a title you may pick up. Same, though! November and December are still great for spooky, Gothic, or atmospheric books! I listened to the audiobook of Hell House by Richard Matheson (it's available on youtube) and I thought it was fantastic! I'm currently reading Perfume and The Amityville Horror, and Tess of the D'Urbervilles (I've been making my way slowly through this). And I also want to read Mexican Gothic, Wuthering Heights, The Betrayals by Bridget Collins, and continue with The Vampire Chronicles in the rest of this month and next. I read the first page of The Betrayals and I loved the writing! That's what I'm going to pick up after finishing Perfume.
If you want more spooky reads with beautiful writing you should give Ray Bradbury a try. He has a few really good books for this time of the year like "Something Wicked This Way Comes" or "The October Country". And his writing is some of the most beautiful I've ever read.
Read the butterfly garden by dot hutchinson. Its so spooky, but trigger warning its messed up. Maybe research first in case but it destroyed me. Sooo good.
On my second time watching this ❤️✨ Emma re the Dickens Vs Tolstoy debate, what's the next book? The schedule has changed a couple of times with how long the books are being read. Could there be an updated list? It's been so fun exploring these wonderful authors ❤️❤️❤️ have a good spooky season 🍁🎃✨🍂🎃🍁🍂✨🎃🍁✨🍂🎃🍁🍂✨🍁
You should read interview with the vampire, I think it would be exactly what you are craving right now, true elegant spooky goth beautifully written vibes with some intense scenes! Then you can watch the movie along with the company of wolves movie haha

@@emmiereads I have not! I probably should after I finish reading. Did you enjoy it?
You should read interview with the vampire, I think it would be exactly what you are craving right now, true elegant spooky goth beautifully written vibes with some intense scenes! Then you can watch the movie along with the company of wolves movie haha
