  • In this video we disassemble the engine that will be the base for our hotrod engine for my 1967 Lotus Europa S1.
    Enjoy!

    The 1470 cc renault , modified for Lotus, was also the engine of a unknown Alpine Renault A110: the 1500 ! ;)

    Finally! On the engine! following you for almost 6years i guess, been waiting for this!

    Should have been cooling the liners to shrink them rather then heating and expanding.
    Rotating the crank with the head off can also lift the liners - learnt that the hard way, with a mate turning the crank by hand when told not to...
    If the crank was bad, I would have been tempted to off-set grind for more stroke :)
    No one ever drops in the crossflow TS engine? That had 10hp more in stock trim then the worked Lotus spec version of the base motor.

      Crossflows are a common upgrade, however I choose to stay with the original wedge engine. There are longer stroke cranks available (but expensive!)! But 1796cc will be enough.

      @@sleursmotorsport More then enough for a sub 700kilo toy.
      Looking at your other videos and timeline, you should do an event with BoM's Project Binky when the cars done. They started about the same time as you. Would be great one on one race at a road course, completely different approaches and chassis layouts.

    This series is still a great hidden gem, bit sad to see it have so little views. Only thing a little irritating is you using the same music as "Binging with Babish" (a cooking channel) :D

    Great stuff Serge but you need to do something with the lighting for when you are working in dark spaces.

      I'll try to do my best Brian. I have one set of studio lights, and they are at my other workshop. Too much of a hassle to move them around.

      Not a criticism, just an observation. You are doing a great job and it would be nice to see down inside the engine.

    Wonderful video. Amazing skills. Would you know if using a Renault 1.6 1980s Fuego turbo engine is worthwhile? I understand that the fuel injected cross-flow head from the Fuego is not compatible for use on a Europa due to camshaft design, etc.. I have a 1970 S2 with a wedge head Renault R-16 frozen engine that I am hoping to restore it to at least operating condition (not necessarily original). Any suggestions from you would be appreciated.

      The Fuego turbo engine has a few nice parts! It should fit in the Europa and I have seen it done once. The Fuego turbo engine has a stiffer block, better (stronger) conrods and crank. You could use the turbo block as a base and build it out without the turbo. Regrinding the crank and getting new pistons. Crossflow engines can generally give more power than the wedge engine. The wedge engine is also a very nice engine! Original spec with another carb and exhaust system is a very nice driving package. Geert from renault16shop is getting new pistons made to the original Europa (high compression) design. Most parts are available if you can't reuse the original parts.

    The pulley attached to the end of the camshaft that drives the water pump is already removed from the engine in this video. I have this engine in my S2 Europa and need to remove that pulley without disassembling the engine.
    I have both the original Lotus manual and a Renault R16 manual. Both emphasis that the large nut holding the pulley to the camshaft must not be used to rotate the engine. Neither manual tells you how to remove said large bolt to remove the pulley or in which direction it is to be turned, anticlockwise or clockwise. If it must not be used to rotate the engine I am loath to whack a long wrench in either direction to get it off! Does anyone know how it is done or is it magic?

    • @sleursmotorsport
      @sleursmotorsport  2 года назад

      You can remove the nut on the cam-pulley, buy unscrewing it counterclockwise (as normal) and holding the pulley. The pulley has two dowels that go into the cam, so if you hold the pulley, the cam will not be able to rotate.

    Maybe I wasn’t paying attention in the beginning - don’t you have the original engine?

    • @sleursmotorsport
      @sleursmotorsport  5 лет назад

      Unfortunately, I don't have the original engine, so not numbers matching. The car came with a 697-01 engine, which is an early 1470cc Renault R16 spec engine, not the high compression Lotus variant.

    Is it normal to have to drive the liners out to remove the pistons Serge? Or was the engine seized?

    • @sleursmotorsport
      @sleursmotorsport  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the conrod big-ends are too wide for the small bore of these engines, so they don't fit through the bores. Only way to take them out, is with the whole assembly.

    • @chrisbeck6722
      @chrisbeck6722 5 лет назад

      @@sleursmotorsport Won't they (the pistons) come out of the bottom? The liners can't have been pressed in with the pistons in surely? Seems a bit drastic to drive the liners out like that, aren't you worried about replacing them?

    • @sleursmotorsport
      @sleursmotorsport  5 лет назад

      Not possible, the engine block has a step that seats the bottom of the liners. I will make a video when I have the block machined to illustrate this. The opening in the block is even smaller than the bore of the cyilinder liners.
