The TRUTH About LEGO Star Wars Minifigures!

  • LEGO Star Wars Minifigures have long been known to only come in LEGO Star Wars sets. Due to a longstanding contract between Hasbro & Star Wars, LEGO claimed its license barred them from selling LEGO Star Wars Minifigures individually. LEGO RUclipsrs such as myself have always believed this to be the truth and would push it as truth to our audience when they would ask why there isn't a LEGO Star Wars CMF yet. As I've come to find out, LEGO lied. LEGO has always been able to make a Star Wars CMF but hasn't "because they didn't want to". They've deprived fans of a heavily desired LEGO Star Wars CMF Series for over a decade, glued LEGO Magnet Minifigures to stands, and given people no choice but to buy sets to get desirable LEGO Star Wars Minifigures. A fine business model for The LEGO Group, but lying would go against their coveted Brand Values. Very cool.

I was super nervous about releasing this, let me know what you think....
To re-cap what I was told since this video is long and just to be super clear.
    - LEGO has always been able to do a Star Wars CMF and hasn’t done one because they just don’t want to.
    - LEGO heard the fan theory that Star Wars couldn’t be sold because of Hasbro license and liked it so much they just ran with it.
    - When the LEGO Magnet Minifigures began being glued to stands it wasn’t because of Star Wars it was because too many Minifigures were falling to the factory floor and couldn’t be used if they touched the floor.

As someone who is new into the Lego Star Wars space (less than or just about a year of collecting and building) I do find it disheartening not being able to buy minifigs or have those random bags to get some figs as well. Don't get me wrong, I want to build the really dope Star Wars sets that they have, but for example: I always walk past the General Grevious star fighter and I WANT IT SO BAD, but seriously ONLY want it for the figures. Ryan this is well done. Balanced and logical. Good job on the research.
I was 30 seconds in and was like - magnets! Thanks for using the reference. One of the two things I called about on more than one occasion to complain about was glued figures. All this makes sense now because they glued everything. It never made sense to me then. I told them just don’t make them if you are going to glue them. If the figures falling off was really the problem why not package them unassembled? That’s an easier solution than gluing them.
If you look at the big picture, it is apparent that LEGO does not want people to “collect” minifigures. It’s why you get the May the 4th promos with no figures. They make many sets with no figures or few figures. I think the Minifigure was accidentally popular in their eyes. Probably not as cost effective as standard bricks to produce. They put crap on the build a fig station because they know if they actually put good stuff there they couldn’t keep it in stock. They would rather you spend $100 to get your 3 figs than $10.
This discussion made me thing of another thing - what about LEGO “values?” It’s another area they are so inconsistent in explaining. In the end it’s like they just throw excuses out there and hope nobody questions them. All of it comes down to money. Nothing wrong with them making money but if they sacrifice integrity to get it then it’s a big fail

and they would be right to do so, buisiness wise. these products are really hard to balance and to help stores selling them. If there are only 3 good figures in a box, people will find them soon enough and the rest will be super hard to sell afterwards. A store paying a box 300 to sell 5 packs at 4 dollars each would really soon figure out that it's a garbage product to stay away from.
This form of collectible is meant to be randomized and trigger gambling addiction, while someone interested in one or two should go to secondary market to buy the one he likes and not losing money.

let's all be honest here for a second : if we all went to a store and found an half empty display with obviously searched packs, would we bother to even pick one? IF you don't like this kind of gambling, wich is by any mean admirable, then there are other means to get THE figure you want

The whole concept just does not make any sense since, by the Lego rationale of minifigures being action figures alone but not when sold as a set, that would mean Lego could produce molded posable figures that everyone would recognize as an action figure based on Star Wars as long as they sold it with enough accessories to be considered a "set." Somehow a Han Solo action figure would be OK as long as it is sold with a replica (not lego) toy Falcon? It just does not pass even the most basic logic tests. What is considered a set vs a figure? Add a gun? Add a speeder bike? Add a 5 piece turret? If it was possible for Hasbro to win a lawsuit against Lego selling a single figure it would be possible for them to win based on sets with figures and there wouldbhave been public lawsuits long ago.

Some collectors choose what they collect. Personally, I can't afford buying large sets and don't have the room to display them anyways. Also, I have been more of an action figure collector, more specifically. Hence, I started collecting Lego minifigures, as they are easier to display. I got into collecting Star Wars Lego minifigures only because I could find them online sold separately from the sets, for which was the only way to get most if not all Star Wars Lego minifigures in general. Then there were Star Wars minigfigures you can buy as keychains and with magnets. So I have a few Star Wars minifigures with hole on top of their heads where I removed the keychain part. Eventually, I found sellers on eBay selling the minifigures separately from the sets. Not to mention some sellers on eBay just sell minifigure assorted parts and I had to piece together Star Wars minifigures. While it has been fun to browse eBay and find pieced together minifigures knowing the torso, leg, or head is actually part of a specific Star Wars minifigure only available in a Lego, and rebuilding the minifigure as it should be, I could have saved so much money if the minifigures had been sold individually. I have also started to buy a few custom minifigures, I still value more the real Lego minifigures and keep my collection or authentic Lego minifigures separate from the few custom ones I have purchased.

I haven’t invested as much as you have but one day, I was thinking about the Last Jedi and how it ruined the Star Wars story as a whole, how it started the decline of the sequel trilogy, and how Disney just wants you to forget that the prequels exist. And then I looked at my collection that I’d spent hundreds of dollars on and several years of collecting and suddenly, it all felt worthless. I wanted to just throw everything.
