The Incredible Hulk: Does Edward Norton's Only MCU Movie Hold Up?

  • 2008 was an important year for the MCU, with Iron Man being the first in what would become the biggest cinematic franchise of all time. But, people tend to ignore the other big Marvel movie that came out that year, Universal’s The Incredible Hulk. Yes, this is the movie where Edward Norton - in a one-and-done appearance - plays Bruce Banner/ The Hulk in what was supposed to lead into a recurring role that would have seen him as part of The Avengers. It didn’t happen, with Mark Ruffalo famously taking over the part. Many believe The Incredible Hulk isn’t part of the MCU canon, but that would be a mistake as the film introduces such recurring characters as Tim Roth’s Emil Blonksy, William Hurt’s Thunderbolt Ross, and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross, who’s set to return to the MCU in Captain America: Brave New World. How does The Incredible Hulk hold up fifteen years later? We’ll dive into it in this episode of Marvel Revisited!

Not as widely known as Iron Man? Before Iron Man launched the MCU - the Hulk had a 5 season TV show and 3 TV movies and a feature film! So I'd argue - Hulk was more widely known than Iron Man, at least for those that lived through the 70s and 80s.

It sounds like normie talk. So I guess the only widely known Marvel Characters are Spider-Man and Wolverine everyone else is C-list and the MCU started with C-list characters.
Spider-Man, Hulk, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor are all Marvel A-Listers.

Yeah, that's one of the most stupid things they have ever said. I can agree about Iron Man - in my country he definitely wasn't well known until the Marvel movies. But the Hulk? Everyone knows him - not just comic book fans. He has always been there in some form. He's nothing like Iron Man. Nothing at all.

Hulk wasn't relevant until Planet Hulk/World War Hulk happened which happened to be after the MCU.
Just because YOU think everything must be A-list doesn't change that even Marvel and Stan Lee himself said that The Avengers book was literally created because people weren't reading those books, so to have something to do with the characters they were put into a team.

I loved how he was watching The Courtship of Eddie's Father with the great Bill Bixby and of course we had the cameos of Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno but there were other actors and voice actors spread through ought. Sorry, a bit of a side track about the recent Hollywood strike. I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to...I guess the movie studios figured that their 'creative accounting' and sometimes cruel contracts/ NDA's would go unnoticed into this new era of streaming. They were wrong, preparation is everything and they were completely ill prepared for this new platform of entertainment.
PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games :)

I never understood why this movie was so hated when it's exactly comics accurate, this movie totally respects the character of Bruce Banner puny and stressed and Hulk who is totally his opposite extremely powerful and dangerous at the same time, we can what we want on the fact that Norton tried to change the scenario or whatever it is tell you that he did it for the good cause and that it's very rare to find an actor so involved in his role most of them don't give a fuck whereas he actually prepared two other hulk films which would be as dark as Christopher Nolan's Batman films, but unfortunately the progressiveness to touch Marvel studios and Kevin Feige, with the takeover of Disney it multiplied by 10, they preferred to take Mark Ruffalo who although he is a good actor he absolutely does not correspond to the character of Bruce Banner either physically or even in behavior, his Hulk is similar to a gorilla out of the zoo and who is constantly being calmed down by Thor or Iron man
in short the replacement of Norton also meant the disappearance of the aggressive and monstrous Hulk, it was enough simply to adhere to his demands on the scenario to completely change Hulk from the mcu and to keep Norton, Feige would have accepted Norton's demands here is what would have happened: Norton still in Bruce / Hulk, Universal would continue to cooperate with Marvel and accept that Hulk also has a trilogy and a major place in the mcu in the Avengers films, Hulk would have taken his revenge on Thanos by participating in the final battle with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor and finally everyone would have liked Hulk
it was all down to one choice but Feige decided otherwise and preferred to lick the balls of Robert Downey jr and Chris Evans for them to be the leaders, he knew very well that Norton was going to steal the spotlight from them given the great actor he is compared to them, the MCU was based on Iron man and Captain America and made the Hulk a completely useless secondary character, I don't know what will happen for the future but Marvel without the Hulk that doesn't attract me at all everything and if we have to have a solo film and Universal gives the rights to the Hulk to Marvel studios only Norton's return as Bruce/Hulk will make me see these films with Ruffalo I have no guarantee and I don't like him in this role

I didn't know Iron Man existed until I watched the 1990s Marvel animated shows like Fantastic Four and Spiderman, where he showed up as a guest. I even watched his show after those cartoons aired on Disney re-run blocks.
Years later, that's when the Iron Man movie came out and that he started to become more recognizable. And when the Avengers came out, Iron Man became a pop culture icon.

A lot of L takes in this video. Its okay if you're more of a "quippy" marvel movie fan but Norton's hulk was solid and it stayed true to banner as a character, not the joke setup he is now in the mcu. Its a shame. This film was better than most of the stuff thats come out in the mcu. The school fight with Blonsky is still such a dope fight.

Hulk was actually more popular before the MCU. The Lou Ferrigno series was gigantic. Along with wonder woman, it was one of the few superhero characters that was actually successful on television. People don't realize how big that show was. Mostly because it was a very long time ago, and they weren't even born yet. And by the 90s, most people recognized the hulk. Way more than iron man. There's a roller coaster at Universal Studios named after the hulk. And its the most famous roller coaster in the world.

Looking for a Hulk movie that focuses more on the inner conflict would have to look no further than Ang Lee's Hulk in 2003. While not perfect, definitely was not a typical superhero movie (which ironically was what it was slammed for) and had is own sense of uniqueness. There's more emotional heart, drama, and reflection where the other itineration's of Hulk in the other movies that followed just seemed to pale in comparison. Perhaps it could be argued that it was ahead of its time, who knows.

It was the only Marvel film I owned for a while. Hulk teally looked like Hulk. The story was the show with modern FX and a budget. Norton would not have allowed a devolution into stand-up comedy. Too bad Universal kept distribution while Matvel got the film rights. That arrangement really screwed up thing when Disney bought Marvel.

"In many ways this is the closest thing to an MCU solo Hulk adventure that we're going to get." What? Sometimes these videos are really well done and others I feel like you're just recalling things without doing any real research. That quote itself makes no sense. This is quite literally a solo Hulk adventure set in the MCU, It's been referenced multiple times and most of the cast are coming back to play the same characters in the next Captain America movie. So what the hell are you talking about? The bigger issue is that there's a very good chance Marvel does now have the rights to make a new Hulk solo film. You didn't even bother to mention who else owns the film rights and why. Is that not important information? It was Universal since when they first started they had no way to distribute the films so they signed a deal with Universal for Hulk and Paramount for Iron Man. I say was because it's been discovered that the Paramount deal was for 15 years and that's most likely the same deal they had with Universal. Since 'Incredible Hulk' came out in June of 2008 the deal that Universal has over distributing solo Hulk films has potentially expired if it indeed had the 15 year timeframe. Which means there's a very good chance the rights have now reverted to Marvel and they are able to make solo Hulk films without going through Universal.

11:02 because they immediately cast aside everything that the Movie set up,
The Abomination potentially returning? Never did anything with it (I am not counting She-Hulk and Shang Chi that was nearly 20 years after)
Not using General Ross as someone who Hunts The Hulk and never letting them interact after this Movie (and don’t start with Captain America 4 this is also nearly 20 years after and they could’ve done that since who knows when)
And same goes with the leader.
The Movie has no impact because the MCU ignored everything.
