    Sly thank you for the video. It is so important to show Nairobi for the modern cosmopolitan city that it is. And the fact that it can be chilly and overcast in Africa. Btw the bread is called CHAPATI. It was brought to Africa by Indian laborers/traders .

    • @chairman76
      @chairman76 Год назад

      So what's so special about chilly and overcast weather? Most countries in Eastern and Southern Africa experience this kind of weather in May-August ("winter"). Plus, Nairobi is nearly 6,000 feet above sea level. It tends to get chilly at night and mornings year round.

    • @minkyem

      @@chairman76 You are obviously enlightened. I live in America. The vast majority of Americans have never traveled outside of their state let alone country. They think of Africa as an oppressively hot, most undeveloped jungle (people living in huts wearing loin cloths). This is the image that the media feeds them. I am simply trying to highlight the real Africa.

    Our cuisine is a mixture of many cultures that have interacted with us in the last 200 hundred years. These include the Arabs, Portuguese, Chinese, European (especially the British due to colonialism), and India. The Indian community came as indentured slaves to build the Kenya -Uganda railway in 1895. Afterwhich they settled here, in fact they are so intertwined in our history which includes fighting for our independence that Indian is the 46th tribe in Kenya. So you'll find in a Kenyan home we include dishes such as pilau, chapati, biriyani, beef, chicken masala, etc.

    You should visit a Nairobi neighborhood called Nairobi West. It has a lively drinking life at night due to its bars in the shopping center. It's only a short drive from the Central Business District. You'll get an authentic feel of African middle class living. The shopping center has two sides (front and back). Both sides have bars. Nairobi West is on the way to Nairobi National Park or the airport if you're coming from the Central Business District. There are also Airbnbs in the area.

    • @Leonmuigz
      @Leonmuigz 2 года назад +9

    I wanted to respond to you about the ethnic groups of Kenya cause you saw people who looked like Ethiopians but they told you they are Kenyan.
    So Kenya is divided into ;
    NIlotes; They migrated from Egypt then went to south Sudan then other parts of east Africa (found in Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda
    Bantus migrated from central Africa specifically congo they are now found in east, central n southern parts of Africa
    Cushites ; They migrated from horn of Africa
    Afro Arabs who are mostly from Mombasa if you go to Mombasa you will sew its due to the east African n middle east slave trade quite a number of them are mixed /look like they are from the middle east
    Asians ; Indians were brought to Kenya by the British as laborers during colonization they have been here ever since
    In total we have 47tribes. Kenya is also known to be the only country with a Perfect mixture of Cushites, Bantus n nilotes
    Some people look like horners in Kenya due to the intermarriages and mixing in the past people always think my mom n sister are either Somalis or Ethiopians but we are Kenyans

    • @jayo7812
      @jayo7812 Год назад

      Let me also add another layer to the Indians in Kenya (and perhaps more of Kenyan history). The Indians did not only come as indentured servants to Kenya with the British, there are also Indians that came and settled here during Portuguese occupation at the Coast. This is why you'll meet Indians in Mombasa who are catholic - these are the Goan Indians from the island of Goa who were under Portuguese occupation and were sent to come to Mombasa and help fight the Omani Arab invaders trying to take over Mombasa and Fort Jesus.
      Also, due to trade there was alot of backflow between the Swahili and India. This is why the Sidhi in India, which is a community of African looking Indians, still speak a variation of Swahili until today. They are basically waSwahili that settled and mixed in India. I met a Sidhi once while studying outside and it was like long lost brothers meeting one another haha.

      It's very very expensive, even for an American. I'd advise you do your research well before visiting. There are countless many other spots to visit over here. Is the Manor worth the experience? Well, I dunno, but I think not in regards to value for money. 10,000 dollars boarding just to feed giraffes. Anyway, at the end of the day, the decision lies with you.

      @@lindaclark1406 definitely it's not 10K it's about 900 to 2K depending with the season. The accommodation and service is great but not out of this world kind of thing. I guess you pay for the experience. The money goes not just for expenses but to keep the conservation effort going.
      If travelling on a tighter budget, try The Giraffe Center, right next door. it's cheaper. You may not wake up to a breakfast table while feeding a giraffe but you still get to feed and kiss a giraffe 🦒.

    I'm surprised you found Nairobi "chilly". After all, the city sits almost 1800m above sea level, which is over 100m higher than Denver! Cloud cover is not unusual at this altitude, as anyone living in Kabul would tell you. As someone from rural Kenya myself, we refer to Nairobi as "Nairobbery" because of the costs and the pervasive street hustlers. Nairobi is as typical of Kenya as NY is of the US or London of the UK. Still, I'm pleased you enjoyed our capital. Too few foreign tourists come out to Western Kenya. Perhaps, next time?

      The general rule of the thumb when traveling, is to eat where you see many of your peers or the local version of your peers. Try to avoid deserted places.
      I have lived in this city and know that these are illegal street food vendors and most locals don't even eat their snacks/ food.
      Most of these street vendors don't even have basic licenses and permits to sell food to the public but they survive by bribing local authority's inspectors who patrol to curb this menace.
      In this city, restaurants & eateries are required by law to desplay their licenses and food handling permits where they can be seen by their customers. This is what i used to look out for when i first came there and didn't know my way around.

    Late-winter in Kenya is like late-winter in most places it seems. The food looks so good too.
    Also, only Sly would be amazed that African women in Kenya got body🤣🤣🤣 This tells me a lot about Seattle😂 (I’m just joking, nothing serious). Am interested in seeing what a winter safari looks like compared to other seasons.

    Why do people who visit Africa always think it's very hot and there are wild animals on every corner? Congratulations on eating like one of us from your clip the day you arrived. I was afraid you'll use a fork and knife.

    How's the noise and pollution in the city Sly? Kenya has some cute women there.

      It depends on which part of the city you are on. Near bus terminus and public transport, roads, are the noisiest, also the most polluted in terms of air pollution. Visibility in Nairobi is tens to hundreds of kilometers, so the air is quite ok. I Am told that in some parts of China visibility is less than a mile. Kind of hard to comprehend how that is even possible. Our main problem is solid waste management, and of course, sometimes, foul water management.
