    Hey Lucy and Mark,
Mark man, EXCELLENT EYE and PERFECT POSITIONING. I do the same thing when I'm in the Philippines and with Carine. That guy was a total pro. Lucy, he made you as he came up the stairs.
I'm very happy that nothing happened to either of you. Those kinds of situations can have some pretty crazy outcomes. And Mark, I totally commend you for stopping it from happening, but advice from a friend, don't follow the person. Usually pick pockets work in teams, so you run the risk of a 2nd person or even 3rd person working together with the picker. You don't know if there are any, and where they are, as well as if they are watching both of you in protection of the picker.
Another reason why is because You are in a foreign country, it may be his country. You can end up having legal problems that the person or group could cause and set you up in retaliation. Pick Pockets usually work in groups of 2 to 3 people. You are an outsider, MARK, no pun intended, because you aren't from the country your in. You never know what connections they may have and to who those connections are to.
Stopping the theft is good and most likely won't cause an issue, but pursuing the person unless there has been physical harm to the victim, in this case Lucy, could make it look like you are the criminal to people in their own country seeing a foreigner pursue one of their own, and that can easily cause retaliatory actions against you or Lucy.
It would be safer to stay with Lucy and make sure she is safe, and let the local police deal with the person. You have him on camera which you can easily show police who the person is. If he's a pro, the police will already likely know who he is and will know where to find him.
By following him, you don't know whether or not he's leading you into a trap, or leaving Lucy even more open for something to happen to her because you aren't with her to watch.
Mark, because of growing up where you have, you are more aware of your surroundings and know when your gut is telling you something is about to happen. Lucy didn't grow up that way and doesn't have those skills. Protect her, don't put yourself or anyone else in harms way, especially if the crook didn't get anything except maybe a few cents. It's not worth the risks of what could happen.
I don't want to see anything bad happen to either of you. You've already had a major incident a few years back.
Think smart, not from anger or in being upset that it may have happened. You can end up getting in even more problems than the picker because in a foreign country, it's that countries laws, that apply to you as well. And when your a foreigner, police have a tendency to not be in favour of the outsiders and will protect their own countries people over a foreigner that pursued an ALLEGED THIEF. And they are ALLEGED. THIEFS until they are caught with your property or someone else's property in their possession.
Not only that, but different countries have different laws for different crimes and the foreigners countries laws don't apply in a foreign country.
Thankfully you are both ok and you didn't lose anything that you know of. Don't take risks like that man, I don't want to see either of you have to deal with something really bad because of acting on your instincts to catch or make others aware of the Alleged Thief. And I say alleged thief, because until he commits a crime and has been found with the evidence of the crime, he is still an alleged thief. He is only legally a thief when he is caught either with your property or has been caught in the exchange of your property. And money is a very incredibly difficult thing to prove who own's it in a situation like that.
Keep Safe Out There Please, use your head, and protect what is the most important to you.
I Love You Both as Dear Friends. I want us all to one day be able to meet in person, crack some cold ones, throw back some incredible food, and catch up on each other in person.
    ❤❤❤❤
