I can hear in the context of what Dave is talking about, that at this time in the early 2000s there was an intense rivalry between Metallica and Megadeth among fans. I think now in 2024, things have definitely changed to where fans respect and admire Megadeth maybe even more than Metallica at this point. 👍🏼
Not only was this a long time in the waiting with decades between them, this was also two days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Im sure both of them felt immense sadness
I think that the best thing that happened to Dave was getting kicked out of Metallica. He composed so many great riffs and vocal melodies, worked hard as a result of his "misfortune". While he never will achieve the level of commercial fame that Metallica did, his art is a notch or two higher in my opinion.
I don't know, but most people( including myself) have resentments about being forced into treatment and don't get what they might have from the process.
Sadly I think he’d have told them ‘no thanks’ simply due to his age and ego at the time. I love that he asked for that now but in ‘83 it wasn’t going to be taken seriously by Dave.
Dave is a fucking legend and he wouldn’t have had the creative liberty to make the library of pure gems he’s created with Megadeth and it’s crazy that guys like him don’t realize what they have done for us, the people that love their music, I also include James in that as he has been someone who still at his age today doesn’t believe he is “good enough” to be where he is sometimes. This shit is crazy to us regular musicians and fans. I have NEVER heard anyone worth a shit say that they “hate” Dave or that he is a “piece of shit” and I was a teen in the days that these events happened in the the 80s. If anything, fans of real metal couldn’t wait to hear what Dave was going to come back with…..but I DO understand the egos of musicians being one myself and I can see how this would affect anyone who is a virtuoso at their craft

I understand that being rejected from your best friends must’ve hurt, but it’s crazy that after 20 years Dave didn’t realize that being kicked out of Metallica was the best thing that ever happened to him, plus, he would never last in Metallica anyway, his ego is too big and his creative is to strong to not own his own band
You can tell that, over the years, a lot of the history has become a blur for Lars. Not for Dave. Every moment they spent together is burned into his mind.
you can just tell as a man Dave is saying the truth and Lars is just telling a story for the media . Dave defended Lars and got fired for being agressive and a drunk...?? Yeah right. He got your guys back !! that is called loyalty , priceless. Lars has been proven to a real POS. But good Dave got fired, so WE could get MEGADETH songs !! and yes all the metallica songs/riffs that Dave made and OWNED.
I'm sorry but Mustaine leaving was the nail that secured the lid on the coffin. All those chunky Metallica sounds, and all their best stuff came from him. Mustaine was the best for Metallica and they wouldn't have become the commercial mess that they did if he stayed with them.
No, Mustaine was a major contributor to Metallica, but he was not the only contributor and Metallica was able to make classic songs and albums without him. Mustaine and Metallica could have never co-existed because Mustaine wants things done his way and Megadeth's frequent lineup changes demonstrate this. By parting ways, Metallica is able to remain cohesive as a band and Mustaine is able to pursue his own endeavors through Megadeth.
I feel as if he would eventually leave them anyway. Too many egos like that, plus how young they were would have caused more problems. Especially the life Dave was living in the mid 80s to the end of the 90s.
Mustiane was a minor contributor to Metallica. He really didn't even write very much and his creatively didn't flourish until after he was fired. And Megadeth pushed harder for commercial success than Metallica did.
Regardless of how much of a contributor Mustaine was to Metallica, the bottom line is they could never co-exist because Mustaine is not a collaborator. Metallica is a true band; Megadeth is treated as Mustaine's solo project.
I think the first part is how it was edited in the film, and the second part the raw video footage? The editing is quite manipulative, it makes Mustaine come across as going from 0 to 100 in a few seconds in response to a careful question, resentful, almost a bit childish, while the raw footage shows him in a very mature, open-hearted and sympathethic way. He leads his response to Lars' question by stating "not to stultify you", he even says he's not mad at Lars when he tells his side of the story. Really makes me wonder how much interviews I've seen in the past have been edited to portray their subjects in a less-than-flattering manner...
I think that they couldn't exist in that situation that long. Nobody was ready to admit his own mistakes (which they obviously couldn't due to their immature demeanor), they were bitching about everything, and they had to choose one, "the shortest straw". Circumstances were the key factor why they decided to kick out Dave.
A few things: When I first heard about Dave and how Megadeth was formed out of spite I thought it was super lame. In my mind that permanently cemented Metallica as the bigger and better band. However I gave them a chance and was pleasantly surprised of the technicality and compositions of the songs. As a band they've done something unique. From this interview you can clearly see how Mustaine has thought about it and had this conversation in his head countless times, possibly every day since his firing. Lars, on the other hand, hasn't given it much thought and from his point of view it's not that big of a deal anymore. Both of them know the situation could've and should've been handled better. And yes, Mustaine was clearly at fault. Obviously it probably wouldn't work out in the long run with so many egos in the band. But using his material when he clearly asked them not to, then not crediting him and not paying any royalties...then Kirk getting all the glory - now that's a shitty backstabbing move. Lars was too preoccupied with Metallica's success and rise to fame to ever consider what they have done to Dave. And yeah, he's clearly successful in his own right...Megadeth is one of the biggest bands in metal. But Metallica is one of the biggest bands in the world. It's clear that he always felt like second best and living in their shadow...because he was. And he probably always thought "What could've been". It's understandble he was pissed off for so long. Anyway it's funny how the whole thing sounds like a romantic breakup story. Especially with Lars being "attracted" and Dave breaking a guy's leg because someone bullied his "little Danish friend" lol.
If I was you Dave I would regret more not having dimebag and vinnie when you had the chance ! But then again pantera to me was more influential in my life than Metallica and megadeth ! Hope you heal from this Metallica thing..
Megadeth recently played the Musician's Hall of Fame, there was a line to get in going way up fourth street. Megadeth, imho, exceeded Metallica on every front. So I can't understand how he could feel this way.
George harrison making all things must pass didn't make The Beatles less popular In some ways Megadeth reminds me of the songwriting and musical talent In the original Metallica Cliff was a special bass player, Dave and James are awesome guitar players and songwriters
Of course not. Megadeth is a completely different band with a different creative voice and accomplishments. The problem is Dave may have formed the band partially to say screw you to Metallica, and it didn’t happen that way. These days, I think people wouldn’t care as much, because Metallica has come back to earth a bit from where they were in the 90s. But this talk and the subsequent things that happened, like Dave playing Kill Em All with Metallica in the occasional show, needed to happen to move forward.
Not true man, it means a lot to him. However, I can understand where he's coming from many times you look at your band like family. With Megadeth he never kept the same band and never had that same element again. It's like a lot of these guys after they go through divorce they say I'm not getting married again because if I don't, I don't have to worry about getting hurt again. I honestly think Dave never allowed it to get close again like he did with Metallica and he feels like there's some unfinished business there. Which is obviously the case in the video. I think it would be absolutely amazing if they did a project with Dave and you can't say the people would not eat it up. You also got to look at it from this perspective, he's not just talking about getting kicked out of a band. He is talking about getting kicked out of the biggest heavy metal band of all time. It's a part of history, it's a part of legacy, it's a really big deal. If it didn't bother him, I would be more shocked.
Even if Dave somehow was able to stay w/the band in those days he would’ve eventually been let go w/all of the big egos (Lars & James) in the band…Cliff had he lived would’ve probably been fed up w/all of their bs/egos & started his own band.
Dave has regrets he should go talk to Pete Best , Best got kicked out of the Beetles cause Paul mccartney couldn't deal with the girls gravitating to the drummer !
I recently got kicked out a band without warning and they released their first album and all the tracks are mine, the guitar drums bass and Vocals, It sucks man, Im a curly haired ginger dude that got kicked out a band and they released my songs, History seems to be repeating itself 😂😂
Megadeth was never a family. It was always a collaboration between artists but never a family. Thats where the hurt lies. Metallica was family. In an alternate timeline Dave would've been much happier touring with a much less successful Metallica for his entire life.
Compared to Metallica. I think he’s mainly referring to when Metallica went commercial they got more popular. When Megadeth tried it with Risk it backfired

I like how they got John Paul Jones to be the counselor
Best part of that whole movie.
Love Dave he's so awesome.
I wonder how the young Dave wouldve responded to them saying he had to go to AA
I don't know, but most people( including myself) have resentments about being forced into treatment and don't get what they might have from the process.
Sadly I think he’d have told them ‘no thanks’ simply due to his age and ego at the time. I love that he asked for that now but in ‘83 it wasn’t going to be taken seriously by Dave.
Dave considering his backfire as a complete “NO” is such bs to me. Megadeth is fucking AWESOME!!!
Why can't Mustaine just imagine being in Metallica instead of regretting being kicked out... He wouldn't stand them a month!!!
"Stultify" is a very, very Mustaine word.
I’m here from the book The Subtle Art of not giving a Fu#k 😂
Lars Ulrich (Gentofte; 26 de diciembre de 1963) es un extenista y músico danés conocido principalmente por ser el baterista, compositor y fundador de la banda de thrash metal estadounidense Metallica.
60 AÑOS. (61)

We all fuck up. Fuck ups lead to greatness many times. Dave is a victory. We live you Dave.
Every moment they spent together is burned into his mind.
brokeback mountain (metal edition)
I’m glad Dave departed and started Megadeth . He was born to lead and conquer . Mustaine is the Man . Period !!!!!
this is longer than fight fire with fire
you can just tell as a man Dave is saying the truth and Lars is just telling a story for the media .
@@deletedhero5579 exactly. They were just not meant to work together, especially during the early days.
Dave:"you know what you put me through?"
Lars: "OM"
THIS IS SO TOUGH TO SEE! PAINFUL
Dave, You ARE great
I really think Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett kept the band in check, or at least tried to.
He would never have gotten sober in Metallica. They were drinking and doing drugs throughout the 80s and 90s.
I love Kirk but if Dave and Cliff were still here as the OG lineup they’ve probably have no bad albums by now
Mustaine is really, obsessively, sore over this. He sees Metallicas success and holds a real deep grudge.
This was on Dave's 40th birthday.
Does anyone know who Phil is that Dave mentions in this interview?
Phil Sandoval from Armored Saint
I think that they couldn't exist in that situation that long. Nobody was ready to admit his own mistakes (which they obviously couldn't due to their immature demeanor), they were bitching about everything, and they had to choose one, "the shortest straw". Circumstances were the key factor why they decided to kick out Dave.
He was also the worst kind of drunk. I mean they all drank but Dave was like unacceptable his behaviour way too violent
They shod have bring him back at some point, with kirk too. 3 guitars... why not
Lars’ Dad would say “ I would delete that “
A few things: When I first heard about Dave and how Megadeth was formed out of spite I thought it was super lame.
Stultify is the word of the day.
What is something that lars is worse at then drumming? Answer is: Talking
Don't kid yourself Lars, he said,
King Dave!!
I mean there was to address you know, what's going on... You know, with my problem, he said.
bawling
If I was you Dave I would regret more not having dimebag and vinnie when you had the chance ! But then again pantera to me was more influential in my life than Metallica and megadeth ! Hope you heal from this Metallica thing..
Megadeth recently played the Musician's Hall of Fame, there was a line to get in going way up fourth street. Megadeth, imho, exceeded Metallica on every front. So I can't understand how he could feel this way.
I know for a fact that they cut off most of this clip
I think it would be a HUGE sell... If Metallica did just 1 album. Just 1 more with Dave just as a project to see what it would do. It'd be good
So what was this? Was this real? It’s strange that this has just never been brought up again and nothing seems to have come from it.
Dave is one of the most articulate people ive ever heard speak. Why are there subtitles in english?
George harrison making all things must pass didn't make The Beatles less popular In some ways Megadeth reminds me of the songwriting and musical talent In the original Metallica Cliff was a special bass player, Dave and James are awesome guitar players and songwriters
This is fucked up damn. Imagine being a Megadeth fan and hearing all this. Its like Megadeth means nothing for him?
Who is the third person there?
Even if Dave somehow was able to stay w/the band in those days he would’ve eventually been let go w/all of the big egos (Lars & James) in the band…Cliff had he lived would’ve probably been fed up w/all of their bs/egos & started his own band.
Imagine being as successful as megadeath and still doing the poor me’s
Dave has regrets he should go talk to Pete Best , Best got kicked out of the Beetles cause Paul mccartney couldn't deal with the girls gravitating to the drummer !
IMO, Metallica wouldn't survive with that lineup, even if they kept Dave. Too many strong personalities.
Was Henry Rollins wearing that blonde wig to make Eminem feel better?
Dave you won you gave us megadeth
As a metallica fan i say: they betrayed him…..
6:35 Dave was too loyal.
I wish lars would at least act interested
I recently got kicked out a band without warning and they released their first album and all the tracks are mine, the guitar drums bass and Vocals, It sucks man, Im a curly haired ginger dude that got kicked out a band and they released my songs, History seems to be repeating itself 😂😂
Megadeth was never a family. It was always a collaboration between artists but never a family. Thats where the hurt lies.
Metallica was family.
In an alternate timeline Dave would've been much happier touring with a much less successful Metallica for his entire life.
“I f’d up”
~ Dave Mustcomplain
Yup. You did.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just like a family problems
is he also a painter?
Dave had a very successful career with Megadeth up to that point. How could he say everything he did backfired???
Crybaby
Compared to Metallica. I think he’s mainly referring to when Metallica went commercial they got more popular. When Megadeth tried it with Risk it backfired
@JCStorm76 he never specified that. He just said "everything"
@@maxpower4868 Yeah probably because he was emotional
The danger of regrets. Mustaine had Friedman, a creative powerhouse... subtract this wasteful regret and Megadeth could have gone above Metallica.
Man, Dave's a good dude...... the best thing that ever happened to Dave was getting kicked out of Metallica because we would never have had Megadeth 🤘🏻
For the Metallica historians; was there more to Dave’s dismissal than his drinking problem?
