"Yes, I'm a legend" - Interview with Dave Mustaine of Megadeth (2008)

- Here's the extended unedited take of our meeting with Dave Mustaine, guitarist and singer of thrash metal legends Megadeth. Just before a 2008 concert in Élysée Montmartre, Paris, and 25 years after being kicked out from Metallica, metal world's most famous dismissed musician talks piano lessons, dealing with drugs and his exploration of black magic. "James kicked my dog!"
What do you mean I have a cavity? I brush my teeth when I have to.
underrated comment
lol great comment.
Haaaa, u win.
LMAO why does this comment not have atleast 1k likes???
That definitely sounded like a Megadeth lyric.
Am I the only one that’s just speechless because of the quality? It’s a 12 year old video, but it looks like it was filmed yesterday! It’s so weird watching a young Dave, where he looks like he’s in 2020.
The French do it better.
@Kay Theo yea true! Pretty sure this is from 2008, time flies

When Dave calls himself a legend all you can do is nod. What a man and what a story.
I kind of have a crush on Dave mustaine.
Dave's a total badass!
I don't know many people that are that genuine. He is, however a very emotional person so I guess that makes him quite unpredictable, but also very interesting, which is why his interviews are always so divergent.
I guess the guys from Metallica never really got him. It's like he puts it: You're young, there's a lot of substance abuse and people collide because of it.. Shit happens. Of course in this interview he's grown emotionally and a lot more put together than in the old days, because for a lot of years he litterally wanted to bury James and Lars.
The thing I really admire about him is his endurance. He really is a fighter and a survivor who fought many battles, including one against cancer recently and I guess he had to learn some lessons the hard way along the way because they did not teach him much at home. But it takes a man to be this straightforward and open about your past and the way you've experienced it. Really quite a character! Hope to enjoy his music for many more years; It has been around 25 years thus far so I must be getting quite old as well ;-)
More like 35 years
@@jasoncurry207 'Hope to enjoy his music for many more years; It has been around 25 years FOR ME'
Oh gotcha lol
@@jasoncurry207 But come to realize it's closer to like 28 years. Countdown to Extinction was my first Megadeth album as a 13 year old and Rust in Peace my second. Both 2 of my favourite Megadeth albums.. Guess Rust is still my actual favourite, mainly because of its awesome riffs, cold/gulf war era theme and of course, Marty's epic solos :-)
Good interview at a very interesting time of his life: divorce (which never ended up happening in the end). A brilliant mind, a true metal icon. My teenage years’ idol. God bless you Dave Mustaine 🙏🏻❤️
You Dave Mustaine are beyond a legend. You are a KING
What a wise eyes he has.... ❤ despite all the jokes he tells, other things..., his eyes are always observing and there is calmness in his gaze. Love it.
I can't count how many savage quotes there are in this interview xD
Love both Metallica and Megadeth :)
Cool video🤘🏻
I have never seen him so happy in any video.
Without a doubt a legend. His catalog of music that he wrote or cowrote alone is legendary.
I like Dave. Phenomenal guitarist and riff writer. IMHO Metallica wouldn't even exist as we know them today if it weren't for Dave Mustaine.
This should have been the period when Dave did the Rogan interview 😁 Would have been more interesting
3:05 and it's been the most memorable 25 of ours to have Megadeth
One of the better Dave interviews
My friend got a license plate custom air-brushed and it said MegaDEATH. I had to point that out to him. He was so embarrassed.
2 years later and his life forever changed...
"... of course I am a legend" that's the words of a legend!
i love dave mustaine
Crappy interviewer, but Dave is great in this one. He looks and sounds happy.
"megadeth or me" no matter how hot the girl is im gonna bet every person on the planet would pick megadeth in daves position girl shot herself in the foot with that ultimatium clearly she didnt know dave at all lol
Dave is fucking hilarious. 🤣🤣
WOW look at the insights Dave gives! Metallica always seemed to me like they're hiding a lot, and I totally believe that James and Lars could get really stupid. "Those guys aren't birds" LOL you just got to appreciate Dave's completely down-to-earth manner, he speaks the way it is, and understandably, this would lead to him having a lot of enemies because no one wants their image spoiled. Well, some people need to learn to have integrity. And so, nobody is perfect, nor isn't Dave - absolutely not if you hear earlier drunk stage appearances - but I can only completely respect his honesty. This is what makes all the difference over James and Lars, and you can see it again in "some kind of monster", where they cannot deny their problems any longer to the point where they finally confront them. Today it really seems like they were all just a bunch of kids doing foolish things with Dave being maybe slightly more mature due to him having had to deal with a lot of shit from early on, but maybe not quite knowing _how_ to properly. James and Lars got along better in the end because of similar childish vibes, and so it was really just a matter of time until Dave's path would separate. The way that separation went down also shows inexperience, which is _also_ understandable given their age. In the end, it's all kind of sad, kind of good, and even kind of comical.
„You can use them, you can abuse them or you can get addicted“ - Dave Mustaine on drugs
Symphonie for destruction 🤘🤘🤘
40 million records with Metallica?
Did he count Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets in there as well?????
He shouldn't, he only cowrote 6 songs in total.
Dave mustaine is a fucking bad ass
Saltiest successful person in the WORLD. 😂 🤦♂️ Gotta love him.
I love Dave but sometimes he seems a little full of himself but it seems he’s worked on that
I’d be full of myself too if I wrote shit like Tornado of Souls dude.
That's just a way to show that he is over Metallica, which he clearly not.

Thanks for the history lesson
Great stuff . Truthfully
I'm not comparing Megadeth and Metallica. But... Like the Great Pyramid at Giza and the Sphinx, they sit next to each other and dominate the landscape around them. Metallica is like the rock solid smooth form of the Great Pyramid. It's edges are defined, it's powerful to behold and it's immovable. Megadeth is just as awe-inspiring in it's own right but unlike the perfection and beauty of the Pyramid... the Sphinx that is Megadeth is a total Beast! Viscous and restless Megadeth prowls the desert, commanding power and respect equal to that of Metallica. The Sphinx, scarred and wounded as it rose to power rests on its foundation, as strong as the day it was built just as the pyramid and its perfection we understand its been there for 1000's of years and remains solid, sturdy, it's weathered storms floods and waves that haven't shifted it in the least for millennia. In construction, it's well known to the architects that the foundation is important to the stability of any structure. And laying the Cornerstone is key in the building of the foundation. Dave Mustaine was with Metallica when they were building the foundation. He and his talent helped set the Cornerstone for Metallica and even though he wasn't there to build the rest of it his early contribution to the groundwork was immense. The Great Ptramid wouldn't be standing today with out the architects and i don't think Metallica would be what it is today without Dave in the beginning. You won't see Dave's name on the GREAT PYRAMID of Metallica, but if you took a look in the basement, way down in the dust covered recesses of that dark footing... you will find a Cornerstone with...
DAVE MUSTAINE chiseled in it.
Mustaine. Killer riffs. Better albums than Metallica from 1990 on. 13:00
This may be the most energetic Dave interview ever. Lol
It's nice to see
I've been around drug users etc. enough to be fairly convinced Dave is on some shit here. I've NEVER seen him speak so fast and with that positive tone.
It shows how smart he was. How on he was.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
When he was young he used to speak faster and with a higher pitch tone in his voice.
This was 12 years ago but Dave looks 30 years older now...
My thoughts precisely
Chemo does a number on u bruh
And he didn't end up divorced, either.
Just two years later, he looks like a granny.
That's what alcoholism and drugs do to you
The Happiest Dave ever. EvER.
he was pretty happy around 2008, you get this vibe from many interviews around that time. United Abominations was a killer record, Ellefson got back on board a year later, it was indeed a second spring for Megadeth.

Well he was about to get a divorce and be single.

Yes! I couldn't do without Kirk, but I'd find space for Dave. Fuck Lars. Though I respect him, I really do, but he doesn't really fit the band of virtuosos. Well, compared to him. That's is not savage, it's the truth. As a drummer Lars is not only unexceptional he is bad and as a human being he is a waste of space. I used to work for the company that supplied Metallica's lighting and stage sets and IMO Lars is an oxygen thief.
James is ok ...as long as Lars isn't in the same room.
Back in '89 or '90 I was on tour with Megadeth and Testament as part of the road crew and Dave is a really nice guy if a bit troubled. Good to hear he got over his drug thing! He liked them a bit too much and he wasn't all that choosy as long as he got off his head.

Dave Mustaine is still alive....... And well.!
I feel identified with him, I can understand that feeling of being lonely, when I was in school my mom had to work so I were almost everyday lonely after school, I remember struggling with the key sometimes, I had to make my own snack and my mom was ausent most of the time in my childhood, my stepfather were working too so I had to wait for them, there were nights when I stayed home alone with my stepfather taking care of me while my mom was working because she was the one that paid for all of my school stuff, clothes and he (who was way older than her) helped her with home and food so she was working to taking care of me and her life
But in my case I woundnt say I had a bad childhood, it was normal, I played with dolls to entretain myself and I was happy like that too
I grow up as an only child feeling lonely most of the time, I still feel lonely sometimes but I know im not the only one feeling that way, I dont let that let me down cause its just life at the end
This is a great interview. Dave is right on with his talking to God daily. Christianity is a relation with God through a Jesus. It’s not a religion thing. None of us are worthy. I discovered MEGADETH in 6th grade in the 80's! HELL YEAH DAVE'S A LEGEND! Credit to being a member of Metallica wrote killer riffs and songs with them. Then rises from the ashes started "The State of The Art Speed Metal Band" MEGADETH!! Survived all the shit and still here.
Amazing how he said in that interview that he would never play again The Conjuring, however, he did it back in 2018. Time flies so fast.
Really!? That son of a gun just couldn’t resist the devil, only joking love Dave!
Yea he reconsidered it because he wanted to play it. Not because of the hex obviously but because it was a good song.
Were the lyrics the same though?
Glad he decided to play it again as it's in my top 3 favorite Megadeath songs
And a year after that he was diagnosed with throat cancer. The man upstairs does not play around. In Dave's words though, it is speculation. But it is eerie how those type of things connect so easily. It is very possible that Dave didn't tell the whole truth about the "hex" he put on the guy for physical damage. That person could well have been for a member of Metallica, which wound up being Cliff Burton. Not only was his leg completely destroyed, but he died in that bus accident. This is the excerpt that describes the unexplainable coincidences and events that occurred that day from his Wikipedia page:
In Sweden, on the Damage Inc. tour in support of Master of Puppets, the band members complained that the sleeping cubicles on their tour bus were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. To decide who received pick of the bunks, Kirk Hammett and Burton drew playing cards.[16] On the evening of September 26, 1986, Burton won the game with an ace of spades, thereby getting the first choice of bunk. Burton turned to Hammett and said "I want your bunk"; Hammett then responded, "Fine, take my bunk, I'll sleep up front, it's probably better up there anyway." Burton was sleeping shortly before 7:00 a.m. on September 27 when, according to the driver, the bus skidded off the road (the E4, 12 miles (19 km) north of Ljungby),[17] and flipped onto the grass in Kronoberg County.[18] Burton was thrown through the window of the bus, which fell on top of him and killed him.
The bus driver said that the crash was caused by the bus hitting a patch of black ice on the road, but James Hetfield later stated that he first believed the bus flipped because the driver was drunk. Hetfield also stated that he walked long distances down the road looking for black ice and found none. When local freelance photographer Lennart Wennberg (who attended the crash scene the following morning) was asked in a later interview about the likelihood that black ice caused the accident, he said it was "out of the question" because the road was dry and the temperature around 2 °C (36 °F), above the freezing point of 0 °C (32 °F). This was confirmed by police who - like Hetfield - also found no ice on the road. Ljungby detective Arne Pettersson was reported in a local newspaper to have said the tracks at the accident site were exactly like ones seen when drivers fall asleep at the wheel. However, the driver stated under oath that he had slept during the day and was fully rested; his testimony was confirmed by the driver of a second tour bus that was carrying the band's crew and equipment.[17] The driver was determined not at fault for the accident and no charges were brought against him.[19]

Merci Arte !
I actually cried after watching this as his childhood story is pretty much similar to mine. The same heartbroken feeling I had as a kid and still have when I get to the thoughts of my childhood and teen period of time. Thanks to him for speaking it out and letting people know they're not the only ones through this kinds of stuff. The most inspiring man I know.
