      Yeah, but I had a 1982 BMW 528e with the big ugly bumper and someone in a then modern (1997) Subaru rear ended me trying to stop for a traffic light they didn't see. It obliterated their front bumper cover and I just had to clean their paint off my bumper. My car didn't have a scratch on it.

    I used to love these cars. I drove a 78 320i for many years, and I have to say that this one has been really pampered! I've never had one with AC, mine was deleted and I put in the non-ac console. The 2.0L shown here is a true soldier; BMW made the M10 from the 50's to early 80's. Easy to tune by ear to pass emissions, starting with valve adjust and ending with the AFM mixture tune. What makes it tricky is what prev. owners and mechanics that don't understand K-Jet have done to it. Vacuum leaks are always the main culprit, but people start turning the idle speed screw to fix the high idle, then move the factory set throttle stop instead of the idle screw. Then YOU get the car and wonder why the hell it's not responding! I also owned an 83 320iS. Love that car also, and rebuilt it's engine. These are fairly easy to work on, but as you know, cheap chinese suspension parts don't last! OCP is crap, the worst. Use Lemforder if you can find it, or Mahle. Gas smell- there are vent hoses above the fuel tanks that rot; the cloth covered stuff that makes it hard to see a bad hose. They are found by removing the rear seat, and you will see two access panels above each fuel tank IIRC. Passenger tank has fuel pump assy. It will always need a new oring when you put it back in. The vent lines/return lines etc go between the two tanks. You can lower the tanks a bit to get more access from above.

      My first BMW was an E30 316 with a 1.8 M10 run by a horrible Pierburg carb. Ran dreadfully, shame as the M10 is a superb engine in just about every other configuration! Went to an E30 318iS M42 which was amazing (still have one 26 years later.).

    • @jamcdona
      @jamcdona 5 лет назад +2

      I've had an 83 533i and a 90 525i. Those cars made me bored of my E21 due to their more modern build quality. I always wanted an E30 though- M42 is a great engine for sure.

      @kallebirgersson710 5 лет назад

      Most people don't understand K-jet and I'm one of those. But M10 from E28 or E30 had L-jet and with that it was probably the best 4-cyl enginge of its time.

      John McDonald people also mess with the throttle stop on Alfa Spica fuel injection and the only way you can set it back to factory is with the factory special tool. Spica is great once it’s set right a lot of people think converting from Spica to dual Weber’s is cheaper but in reality a rebuilt pump is the same price as a carb conversion and the Spica injection runs smoother.

If we have some people have their way, they would be driving without an MOT with all consequences regarding traffic safety. 350 pound in repairs is not much. looks a solid and wel maintained bmw
    but all those little fixes can add up to a lot of dollars
    old cars are fun to look at, but when you start driving them
    its always something that goes wrong :D
    so i quit that hobby
    cars take to much money and the fuel prices dont help either
    soon all of those old cars will be banned or to expensive to drive i think
    for a more green environment

      Paying for depreciation and interest adds up to even more than keeping an old rig running. Older cars work in cycles. Many things go at once, you fix them, and then vehicle is solid for a while until the next set of replacement things come up.

    I used to own a 320A around that year, maybe 77 or 78. That was the carburetor version, and it was a 2 door. The car was already pretty far gone when I got it, and I ended up selling it off cheap as I am not a mechanic and it would have cost more than it was worth to rebuild the engine which overheated and was starting to cause trouble. Pity, as it was a nice looking car. I am in Australia so didn't have the ugly American bumpers.

    I like the yellow on the Olds diesel; it matches the color of diesel fuel containers and makes it look like a CAT bulldozer! I think your reasoning for the motor is completely logical as well as the reliability upgrades, but the selfish side of me wants to see a roots style supercharger or Banks turbo setup on top of that thing.

    101hp. While technically an improvement over the 2002, it hasn’t lept up in value, so they can still be picked up fairly inexpensively. Fun to drive...something sadly missing in just about every modern Bimmer.

    WHAT FUCKING FUEL LINES ARE THOSE FROM THE FUEL DISTRIBUTOR????
    This is Bosch K-jetronic, and normally these lines are braided metal over very good plastic. This is true whether this is a Porsche 930 or a Volkswagen Rabbit; Where the hell did these come from?
    Another EXCELLENT video!
    Well, I am glad at least that you are painting your Olds diesel engine Caterpillar yellow, though I really think you will find that you've made a big mistake the first time you drive it. You have installed the equivalent of a non-turbocharged 1.6 liter 16 valve gas engine in a 5500 pound car~

    The E21 (a.k.a. the original 3 series and obviously the one in this video) is a little gem of a car. I am biased, my first car was a 1976 E21 BMW 316. I'm in Sweden so it was a euro spec car, which means none of those ridiculous bumpers. I'm not sure if you had the 316 in north america, but it had the same M10 block but with 1.8 liter displacement and 90 hp. Very rev happy as well as very tail happy =)
    I've also had a 1981 323i, which is the most powerful and BY FAR the most desirable version because it had the inline-6 m20b23 with 143 hp and mine was also upgraded with a lower gearing, seriously limited slip diff (I'm talking audible wheel slip on tarmac while turning), Bilstein coil-overs and the unique for E21 Recaro seats (which btw are seriously supportive as well as stylish, as long as you're not very large. I'm broad and fat by european standards which means i was exactly the right width to be extraordinarily supported). It had an aftermarket exhaust as well, which made such a glorious inline-6 noise! Oh what a car!

    Thank you for the tour. The BMW brings back memories, I had a 1986 BMW 524td owned for 8 years, always leaked fuel from the injector pump because the PO hooked up a Waste Oil -piece of cr--#p-- system that ruined the pump seals. So I advertised on and had 30 interested folks from all over the U.S. sold to a BMW car guy and even made a profit of $500.00.. The 260 Z, I had a 2+2 version, removed the smog and installed webbers and headers- tuned on a Sun chassis dynomometer amazed at the power increase..also rebuilt the distributor. Looking forward to future undates on the 69 Caddy.

    That car's in really good condition, the main thing with BMW E21s (the first 3 series, 76ish to 83ish depending on the market) is rust and this one just seems to have NO rust. That car in Sweden (and probably in large parts of Europe and particularly in the Netherlands) is worth money! Those bumpers are just a crime unto the designers though, they ruin the whole car! If you watch this video, please do yourself and others a big favor and google E21 pictures, because those bumpers SERIOUSLY ruin the design of the car. The E21 cars are just beautiful without those hideous US-bumpers.

    Wizard, you are making a BIG mistake mounting that diesel engine in this 5500 pound car! 90/105/120hp versus 5500 pounds: Sorry, but you have to pull in to traffic, and these engines will not sufficiently do that!
    Good luck man, but please be careful~

    I've had my driving lessons on this type of BMW. You reffered to the 320i as a "small" engine. May be right from your perspective, but for us Germans the 320 had been a larger engine. On the European market you could get a 1.6 liter and even a 1.5 liter version as well-both of them only with a manual transmission...

    Re: The Cadillac valve cover color: David, what the heck are you doing painting the valve cover mustard yellow?! The correct color for a 5.7 diesel is a blue metallic with a hint of silver tint. Anything but what you've painted it, (except pink or purple). By the way, can I go car hunting with you next time?

    Remember those old BMWs. My dad had 5 320s in a row, starting around '78 (give or take a year) before switching to 525s.
    He drove a lot for business, tended to replace them every 2 years or 250000km.

    A family friend owned that car, incredibly well made. He owned it for two decades. In the 90s, I bought a new 320i expecting similar quality...horrible car, flimsy and a constant source of trouble.
