There is a death counter. While that doesn't prove anything, it would seem silly for the game to count deaths if it was intended to be played tool assisted and therefore never dying. While the game looks extremely difficult, definitely in the upper scale of difficulty for something playable by humans, it's still not the most difficult out there. See a TAS for Mario Must Die, that one's definitely intended for TAS only

Anything above Mario's mustache isn't part of his hitbox.
GMS thrakkes I love the parallax scrolling on that part of the level. It's almost disorienting the way the floor was layered.
He clips through all kinds of enemies all the time, kinda fishy.
