The way Daijin speaks and sounds, overall seems like a child does back up this either. (and even though the english subs says “I couldn’t even become your cat,” the way the words were phrased in Japanese translates more to like “I couldn’t become your child,” meaning that Dajin saw Suzume as his parental figure.) So you cannot really blame Daijin for leaving his duty on someone else as he’s literally a innocent child that was sacrificed and forced to fulfill said duty that he didn’t even consent to in a cats body. Daijin is basically a little child in mentality (we can infer from the fact that it has a child's voice, knows its dislikes and likes but doesn't know what's 'right' and what's 'wrong)-to it, Suzume is like its mother because she freed it & asked it to be her kitty (which probably sounded a lot like adoption to Daijin). 😭 i wish people would stop saying it's annoying because it's been through a lot (it's SCRAWNY when Suzume released it), no one has ever appreciated it BEFORE Suzume (and us netizens) which makes it clingy of her, and it really, really LOVES her enough to let it slide that she's one of the few that closes the door (which was one of the reasons it turned the guy into a chair)-it decides to return to being a keystone simply because Suzume is sad. Think of Daijin as a child clinging to his / her mom and it's very, very heartbreaking. Man, now I'm depressed the producer couldn't make another ending where it was released from its duties to become Suzume's kitty (or probably another ending where Suzume went on an adventure to make a new keystone with methods where no one was harmed, etc). 😭😢 Or maybe the producer could have given us a scene where Sadaijin and Daijin are happy in the netherworld and I wouldn't be this depressed 😭
I’d argue that he’s more along the lines of what he presents himself as. He’s a cat, and just wanted to be Susumes pet because he thought she was a kind person. You’re right that he doesn’t understand right from wrong, but that’s mostly just because he is literally just mentally a cat, but with the ability to speak. Him turning Souta into a keystone is likely the equivalent of your cat knocking over a glass just to get your attention. All he wanted was to be loved, particularly by susume. Problem is, he was also a god. As a god, he had responsibilities that he couldn’t just pass on to some innocent mortal. A common theme in Japanese mythology is that it’s not necessarily a good thing to be divine. The divine and the mortal must be kept separate, and the divine also find it particularly hard to reincarnate. In Shintoism, there are a few stories of Kami (basically gods) who try to diverge from their original purpose, or duty, and end up with particularly depressing endings as they are forced to abandon their mortal friends or adopted family so they can return to their duty in the supernatural world. Princess Kaguya is a pretty famous example of this, if you want to look it up. It’s really interesting, because I think Shintoism is one of the few polytheistic religions where the gods are to be pitied sometimes.
Hey, as a Japanese, I'll use the translation machine to tell you something good😄 In English it translates to "I couldn't be your cat", but in Japanese it says "I couldn't be your child". 子→"ko" in Japanese. This doesn't only mean "my child", but it can also be used for cute beings, and Suzume said to a cute cat. However, I think Daijin was taken to mean "Will you be my child?" Suzume is also welcomed as a child by her mother-in-law with the same words, and I think there is a meaning there.
@@537monster I am Japanese and could not understand why Daijin was pitied in the English-speaking world. However, I realized that I was trapped in the idea of theis. I thought that He was God and that he should do his part rather than spend time with Suzume.
I burst into tears when I heard the last lines of Daijin it's seriously not fair how he's getting hate or being mentioned as the antagonist of the movie he's just a small cat give him a break 💔💔😢
The only antagonist to me was Suzume's last brain cell. She really is an adolescent with no self awareness for others or her own actions like leaving a cursed door open.
I literally cried for this cat... Especially that time when serizawa was callin out to daijin ... And that time when suzume thanked daijin... And finally when daijin turned into keystone😭
I felt so sad for poor Daijin! All he wanted was to be loved. He didn't know how to go about it. I balled my eyeballs out when he said "I couldn't become your cat."
I just love how the movie show the logic behind Daijin, and gives us the guilt that we shouldn't hate him after all. He's just trying to help Suzume and Souta to navigate the next opening of the gate. I love the way the directors gives us the word "REALIZATION" after all Daijin did. It breaks my heart so bad, specially when you are a fur parent. 💔
That last part where Daijin saved her and asked her to be brought back with her own hands 😭 I mean he was a mischievous prick before that 😤 But this is how you make a redemption arc 😭
rewatching this scene now after finishing the movie, hurts way much more than the first one. Poor Daijin. He didn't deserve this, and ... . . . he ended up being sealed back, to spend eternity alone. And all he got during his brief release was cold treatment, hate and pain .. Edit: the way he says "Suzumee" with lots of hope and love, but always get treated back badly hurts so much ..
People, daijin is annoying, but i think daijin has a mindset of a children, it just wants to play with suzume who freed her so it passed the sealing stone position with souta, but in the end he understood that it will always be its duty and became a stone for eternity once again which is sad for our poor baby cat
The first time I saw Daijin was I thought he is cute. Then as the scenes went on, he became a little annoying, wanting to play mouse chase. But that scene really broke my heart. I kinda understand that Suzume wants Souta to be human again and went mad at him. She is the only one who can see and can intervene on closing the door. But Daijin just wants to be loved. He redeemed himself at the end, sacrificing himself yet again to becoming the keystone. Man, this hurts. wtf
The moment we realise daijin was helping her by guiding her to the doors the cat really deserved love but with great powers comes great responsibilities
I felt so sad for the daijin, he was so innocent, he just wanted to be free and roam around, he wanted a mistress. In the end he who loved too much and saved everyone ❤
I really dunno what to say...all the comments already have the words of my heart.... and Daijin reminds me of my cat..... I lllllllove Daijiiiiiin........ and cried hard....really hard after Daijins return.....
I like the hypothesis that Daijin was a child who was sacrificed by her parent who was a door closer. Daijin has a child-like innocence and wants to play all the time because of that. Daijin's circumstances echos Suzume. Suzume lost her parent as a young girl, was asked by Kaedo to be her child, but she can't quite become one. Daijin was abandoned by her parent, was asked to be Suzume's child, but she couldn't quite become one. Because Daijin understands Suzume's hurt, she guides Suzume through a journey to close her door. Most likely Sa-Daijin is Daijin's father, and the fight between Kaede and Suzume was an echo of Sa-Daijin and Daijin's conversation.
At first, Daijin gave me a bad taste in the mouth, hopping around dangerously and turning a person into a chair out of pure shallow spite. Then, when Daijin returned to being the keystone, I realized the bad taste was all because of Suzume. She was the one who picked Daijin up and removed it of its duty just out of pure selfish curiosity despite how obviously shady the stone looked. She just had to satisfy her wants and also irresponsibly leaves the magical door wide open after she herself was the one who opened it. Her whole being invites danger. Even from a young age she was always doing dangerous things, running away into a blizzard storm, talking to strangers, following strangers, leaving her guardian in the dark about her whereabouts as though it's like her aunt doesn't care and love her and has been taking care of her from a young age as an orphan who as her sole legal guardian and caretaker has a right to worry about her safety and location. With little to no conscience of her own safety or anyone else's security, this is exactly why I can't stand these nonchalant and unrealistic characters and films. I'm not supposed to blame the main characters for being absolute airheads because if they weren't as stupid as they come, there would be no conflict for a story in the first place and it'd just be a classic slice of life story instead. By her action, she gave Daijin life and it believed that was because she loved it and that was why it could now be free. Like a selfish child (probably learned from its parent, Suzume- or perhaps the keystone takes after its chosen owner when released), Daijin experiences this new feeling of love towards Suzume in which it wants to be the only one loved by Suzume but knows from a glance that Suzume likes Souta as well and turns him into a chair probably because it knows Suzume likes Souta's looks so it changes his appearance- or rather, relocates his soul into the chair to which I am confused where his body was being stored to this day. Then in the end, Daijin is thrown away again, fated to be alone as nothing but a tool to keep the human world safe despite receiving nothing in return. It is arguable that being carved and created with the chance of living a life when removed as a keystone was a gift Daijin could receive in return for its services as the keystone, but that is a farfetched gift, given the slim possibility of anyone intentionally removing a keystone to wreak havoc on the world. Daijin getting injured and its implied death was the excuse to justify restoring its position as the original keystone since it was dying anyway. Daijin never receives the love it believed in until its death. Daijin was nothing but an object until it died to prove it once lived.
To be honest, while watching I expected, that Souta's grandfather would become the keystone. I mean, he said himself that this is honorable, and he is at the verge of dying... so it would have made sense if the black cat had turned him into a keystone. At the end, we would have a 'happier end', because Daijin would be Suzume's cat and Souta would be free.
I wish Souta and Dajin both got Suzume in the end! It was so unfair that only one could, Dajin was never able to be loved as he had to maintain the doors and everything, he finally experienced love from suzume and wanted that. All he wanted was to experience love like a cat would with their owners. 😭
Wahhhh I remember leaving the cinema after watching this beautifully animated movie feeling quite off about the main character. It’s weird because I felt that the character dynamic and relationship between Suzume and daijin, if executed well, could have been such a cute/wholesome relationship for the audience to hone in on, as well as a plot device to showcase a main character’s growth, tolerance, character when faced with despair etc etc. (I say this because I’ve seen well-executed examples of mutually benefiting character dynamics between characters such as naruto & kurama, natsume & nyanko sensei etc. who in their respective fandoms are prized character pairings + also hey, who doesn’t like a main character that’s nice to animals 😭) Instead it made me cringe to see Suzume, the main character we were supposed to root for, genuinely hate and squish a cute cat continued to protect and save her. (I cried when daijin still shielded her with his body when she fell from the sky) For me, it reflected onto her character and I genuinely could not like Suzume for the rest of the movie, especially because daijin got such a sad ending. I was grasping at straws trying to make myself feel better by honing in on the cute scenes when the two cats showed up. Hey I mean, props to the director, the movie was beautiful. Just sad a cute little cat got squished cause damn that was what the only thing that made me sob in the movie LMFAOO
That last clip really hit in the feels and was just as heartbreaking in the original version as it was when I watched it with my boyfriend. It’s beautiful movie.
The only antagonist for me is suzume, like, who tf leaves a CURSED door open, it was clear that sm bad was gonna happen, and she blamed it on danjin even tough it was HER fault, imagine, you open a cursed door and someone gets turned into an object because you woke up the guardian of the door, who is the one to blame here? THE ONE WHO OPENED THE DOOR. Aka suzume.
Look the cat was so cute and kiddish that I loved it even I got a cat and kittens are kiddish right So the thing is that if you see in the human pov the cat died bcoz of that couple but if you look at that cat pov The cat first choose suzume as her master than she helped her find the doors then she got heart broken bcoz she didn't understand that couples love so she shattered by heart But when daijin found the last door She helped and thought she gained her love back which was missing from her master And she sacrificed for that couple Ofcourse any animal would give their life for a bit of their masters happiness so she sacrificed herself for the couple 😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭 rip our beloved daijin ❤❤
Daijin annoyed me during the first half of the movie, but in the end, he wanted to experience freedom after being a literal keystone for thousands of years. Seeing him return to his fate at the end was sad.
Me and my mom actually watched this in theaters, and my dad, sister, and brother who came to the theater after watching a different movie came and sat down next to us during the part where Suzume was putting Daijin back.
Or maybe the producer could have given us a scene where Sadaijin and Daijin are happy in the netherworld and I wouldn't be this depressed 😭
Hey, as a Japanese, I'll use the translation machine to tell you something good😄
In English it translates to "I couldn't be your cat", but in Japanese it says "I couldn't be your child".
子→"ko" in Japanese. This doesn't only mean "my child", but it can also be used for cute beings, and Suzume said to a cute cat.
However, I think Daijin was taken to mean "Will you be my child?"
Suzume is also welcomed as a child by her mother-in-law with the same words, and I think there is a meaning there.

I am Japanese and could not understand why Daijin was pitied in the English-speaking world. However, I realized that I was trapped in the idea of theis.
I thought that He was God and that he should do his part rather than spend time with Suzume.
it is said that Daijin is actually a human child that was sacrificed to become a keystone who now takes a human form lol
@@user-vd1pv1gp5lwhere does it say that? And do you mean now takes a cat form?
I burst into tears when I heard the last lines of Daijin it's seriously not fair how he's getting hate or being mentioned as the antagonist of the movie he's just a small cat give him a break 💔💔😢
The only antagonist to me was Suzume's last brain cell. She really is an adolescent with no self awareness for others or her own actions like leaving a cursed door open.
Until now I feel regret for Daijin. There must be a way to live with him it's really sad. 😭😭😭😭
I literally cried for this cat... Especially that time when serizawa was callin out to daijin ... And that time when suzume thanked daijin... And finally when daijin turned into keystone😭
Daijin had me bawling in this scene and in the one scene where it said "Return me with your hands" 😭
The part where daijin's voice where like crying made my heart broken into pieces.
I love the way she call "Suzume!"
It's too cute 😆
Poor baby. It hurt me so bad. I loved to meet him in ever after and make him my own.
At first I hated daijan for what he did but he slowly grew on me and he redeemed himself and I miss him now😢
I felt so sad for poor Daijin! All he wanted was to be loved. He didn't know how to go about it. I balled my eyeballs out when he said "I couldn't become your cat."
When he’s just in such distress and asks ‘don’t you love me?’ It breaks my heart. He deserved so much love and recieved such mean treatment
That last part where Daijin saved her and asked her to be brought back with her own hands 😭 I mean he was a mischievous prick before that 😤 But this is how you make a redemption arc 😭
one thing i hate is there weren't even thank you or appreciation for Daijin from Suzume:) at least Daijin needs to know that he is loved.
the fact that suzume was so mean to daijin the whole time!
rewatching this scene now after finishing the movie, hurts way much more than the first one.
I will just think that in another universe daijin, suzume, souta happily lives together the end 😭😭
The cat realised it fucked up and unfortunately this outcome was a key part of its redemption arc
I wish we had got a scene at the end, where Suzume makes a shrine for Daijin.
Daijin's so precious 😢
I wanted them ...but they ignored daijin😭
Hopefully the Manga does Justice on thar
Seriously.
海外ニキみんな優しくて惚れてまう
The first time I saw Daijin was I thought he is cute. Then as the scenes went on, he became a little annoying, wanting to play mouse chase. But that scene really broke my heart. I kinda understand that Suzume wants Souta to be human again and went mad at him. She is the only one who can see and can intervene on closing the door. But Daijin just wants to be loved. He redeemed himself at the end, sacrificing himself yet again to becoming the keystone. Man, this hurts. wtf
Tbh it’s the reality because daijin doesnt understand human emotion so he gets karma from suzume cuz he didnt know she was going insane
Tbh, i’d rather souta be human and have daijin become a keystone for a while but come back to a cat once every few months or somethin
The moment we realise daijin was helping her by guiding her to the doors the cat really deserved love but with great powers comes great responsibilities
I just came here to cry 😢
This actually made me cry 😭
When she was hurting the cat that made me feel so bad 🙂
I felt so sad for the daijin, he was so innocent, he just wanted to be free and roam around, he wanted a mistress. In the end he who loved too much and saved everyone ❤
I really dunno what to say...all the comments already have the words of my heart.... and Daijin reminds me of my cat..... I lllllllove Daijiiiiiin........ and cried hard....really hard after Daijins return.....
Good cat, I'm so sorry for Daijin...
Oh nooo this is super sad. "Return me... With your hands." Made me tear up. Kudos to the voice actress 😢
Let's be honest. Every scene with him is sad because little dude doesn't deserve this treatment at all
I cried so hard when he said..
“Return me… with your hands…”
Made my eyes water immediately
JUSTICE FOR DAIJIN
IM PRAYING FOR DAIJIN TO BE A CAMEO IN MAKATO SHINKAIS NEXT MOVIE TO PROVE HES STILL ALIVE AMEN AMEN AMEN
ダイジンはとても悲しそうなので、彼を養子にできたらいいのに :(
Come to me, daijin 😢
Its her fault in the first place, She was the one who let a keystone free from its seal. Daijin deserves better.
Am I the only one who notice that when daijin felt sad it was similar to howls moving castle
You're not the only one buddy
Until now I’m crying daijin just want to be loved by suzume he’s just a sweet guy 😭😭😭😭
これはシンプルに寂しい😢😅
(I say this because I’ve seen well-executed examples of mutually benefiting character dynamics between characters such as naruto & kurama, natsume & nyanko sensei etc. who in their respective fandoms are prized character pairings + also hey, who doesn’t like a main character that’s nice to animals 😭)
Instead it made me cringe to see Suzume, the main character we were supposed to root for, genuinely hate and squish a cute cat continued to protect and save her.
As a cat lover This scene really broke my heart. He’s so adorable I love him so much I just wanna pick him up and give him cuddles
И его можно понять… он просто хотел, чтобы его любили ❤️🩹
Дарите добро и оно обязательно вернётся к вам👐🏼
Awww I’m crying he does not deserve this 😭😭😭😭
That last clip really hit in the feels and was just as heartbreaking in the original version as it was when I watched it with my boyfriend. It’s beautiful movie.
i miss daijo😭😭😭
Its almost 100 times over and am still crying 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I feel bad for Daijin he did his job, and he just wants to be loved and have fun. I cried a lot after he turned back into a keystone
Aka suzume.
the way he say its hurt 😔😔😭😭😭☹️😭😭
Early i said he’s so annoying brat but in the end i really miss him and also suzume in ever-after world got me crying so bad 😭😭
Even tho I'm late...this is my very first time crying much😢😭😭😭😭😭😭she/he doesn't deserve to be keystone.Daijin just wanted to be love by Suzume😭😭😭
I cried because I remembered my cat
DAIJIN voice is very cute and makes me cry 😭😭
Daijin deserved better. I never cried so much over a character
I cried for and hour after the anime was over because of that last scene. I LITERALLY CAN NOT.
Adorable. 😮
Look the cat was so cute and kiddish that I loved it even I got a cat and kittens are kiddish right
So the thing is that if you see in the human pov the cat died bcoz of that couple but if you look at that cat pov
The cat first choose suzume as her master than she helped her find the doors then she got heart broken bcoz she didn't understand that couples love so she shattered by heart
But when daijin found the last door
She helped and thought she gained her love back which was missing from her master
And she sacrificed for that couple
Ofcourse any animal would give their life for a bit of their masters happiness so she sacrificed herself for the couple 😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭 rip our beloved daijin ❤❤
I distinctly remember my sister saying, “Damn, the cat died. L.” I hit her right then and there.
that makes cry soo much😢
I hated daijin then i loved him and cried so much at the end 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
what makes me angry is that suzume didn't apologize properly
I haven't seen the movie, I hear it's really good! But damn, seeing these clips, maybe I shouldn't??? IDK! I'm already crying just from these scenes now and I got no context! They just reminded me of my cats and cats tend to be very childish, they want love and attention, just with these clips alone with Daijin, it broke my cat loving heart... and I felt the loss...
You made me cry in 47 seconds!!!!? I haven't even watched the movie!!! 😭😭😭
I love cats so much, and miss the ones I lost 😭😭😭
I'll anyday pick this adorable kitty!
"I said that hurts suzume!" GOD THAT HURT ME IN SO MANY WAYS
"Suzamae I told you that hurts!" "suzamae doesnt love me..." *Becomes deseased*
I don't get why Suzume is deeply in love with Souta. She had known the guy for a week. Yes, he is hot and all but it breaks my heart when she never even shows any kind of liking tower the cat who likes her a lot. There are plenty of fish in the sea but there is only one Daijin ( an adorable cat that can talk)
Suzume doesn’t love me.
That made me ball bro
泣いちゃう
In this cine, I felt bad for Daijin I cried because of this cine but good thing Suzume didn't throw Daijin, But it's unfair Daijin guide Suzume to open the door, Daijin helped Suzume to save Souta but it ended up Daijin being returned by Suzume's hand:((
Alot of people does not understand Daijin, he's a Mythical God The stone key protector,he does not refuse to be caught, he's a kid how can he know, what is he supposed to do,and he doesn't know anything as a God being sleep for decades it's normal for him now to be a stone key that't why he showed no concern when Satou turn into stone key, when he's being chased Probably he'll think they're just being playful and playing tag with him, so he ran, i guess just like (Kid) Suzume,he wanted someone to take care of him feel free..be a real pet, didn't anyone noticed he's always there whenever they go he follows and plot twist he is not running from em he's Trying to help em locate all the doors that got unlocked because of Disturbance of balance and those worms comes out and they can't stop it, without he's partner the door keeps opening and opening and worms comes out,it needs to be Sadaijin and Daijin to be able to close the door and stab the both end of the worm at the same time, so it'll be sealed again, I admit I hated Daijin at first but.. when i finally learned his true motives, i begin to cry for Daijin specialy when they are fighting the worm he turned back into a stone key, without being beloved, Daijin deserves to be with Sadaijin because they're the only ones who understand each other who cares for each other,
He's Daijins brother Sadaijin. Isn't?
I cried endlessly watching this😢😭😸❤💗
Daijin lives with Suzume
In another universe
When the cat got sucked out of life so did my heart, it was really Heartbreaking
This was really like arrow through the heart
