  • Thanks for tuning in to watch my urban sketching, ink and watercolour tutorial! Don't forget to check out my channel where I have hundreds of different urban sketch tutorials, as well as other watercolour and ink sketching guides for everyone from beginners to more advanced!
If you'd like to support my channel you can buy me a 'Coffee' on KoFi - ko-fi.com/tobyurbansketch
When I reach my goal I'll upgrade my sketching tutorials with a new camera and use my old camera to give an extra view point in my videos! Perhaps my face, perhaps my watercolour palette, or some close ups of my process!
Here is my new, updated, video on how to easily, simply and quickly draw people in your urban sketches. This time the focus is on making people a PART of your scene.
In this video I'll give you my latest, most up to date, top four tips, hints and hacks to add people to your scenes - including quick line work, perspective and sense of scale made easy, and even a splash of colour!
Urban sketches can be brought to life with peoples and figures, often capturing a simple portrait or even a busy crowd can be, if not key then certainly beneficial to busy streets or market scenes, for example.
But sketching people can also be scary or challenging.
For me, it's all about breaking down figures into something more simple. Remembering that we don't have to draw every line, feature and aspect of people to make them effective. Instead easy, simple and quick people can be added without fear, and can be super effective, perhaps even more effective in a lot of sketches!
So, without further ado, lets get to sketching our people!

Thanks so much sir for taking the time and trouble to demonstrate these excellent tips and techniques for populating a sketch. Have always had a big problem adding human interest to a sketch and it's usually been a couple of birds flying high in the sky to show something alive and moving. Now practicing the methods you have demonstrated i am sure I will be able to include people with much more confidence and success.

I was inspired to try this and as a complete beginner I not only enjoyed the practice, I was amazed at my results. Thank you so much.

Sorry if you've answered this question before. What paper are you using for these demonstrations?

No problems! This is, I believe, Daler Rowney student grade paper ... That's certainly what I use for most of my demos like this
