Buying a classic car because you want it is entirely different than buying it to flip it. He states he's always wanted one, but he's only interested in flipping it.
That is not how it works when you are in the business of reselling used items. You buy what you yourself want to have, but never buy anything you can't make money on. So when you get tired of it, as you inevitably will, you can sell it, or put it up for sale and use it while it sells. The idea of buying something just have it indefinitely without a care for it's actual value is not good business, and is why so many people are broke.
But even if he wanted it for himself, I'm pretty sure he would still want to restore it, and it just doesn't make sense to pay someone for something that basically requires the entire value of the finished product to restore it. At that rate, he should just go look for an already restored one and buy it at that price...
Not really; The whole point of owning a collector car is that it will appreciate no matter what. This wasn't "that car", because no one cares about your hobby project; Any serious investor wants the car as original to factory as possible. Dinamo Zagreb true, it wasn’t worth it to Rick for a restoration and flip but it might be worth 9 or 10k to a local who can keep it as is and work on it himself.
Right lol. If you you rely on an e brake in an actual emergency you're gonna have a bad day lol. It's either not gonna stop fast enough or it'll just lock up in a turn and wrap you around a tree.
Unless Ghia's were different, VW's never had engine mounts, they were bolted to the gearbox with just 4 bolts. But the rear wheels dont look right with the negative camber.
I dont know what the market is like in the US but over in the UK youd be looking at £13,000+ for a half decent runner, £30,000 for a fully restored model. Unless theres thousands of them in the US then 5k seems crazy low.
You mean pick at everything that no buyer wants and lower the price because the market gets smaller or have to throw in money into the original restoration? lol.
Hey Rick I think your guy that knows everything about Volkswagens is full of crap 64 Karmann Ghia doesn't have motor mounts the engine bolts directly to the transmission with 4 17 mm bolts

The guitar guy they have that comes in brought down Def Leppard to confirm it was his.
idk what the market for them there is. West coast cars tend to survive longer without rust issues so I'd bet there's more of them around there and that might affect the price.

This is definitely one of those segments where they know they're not going to buy it ahead of time and they only went to put it on the show and to give the seller advertising.
I see where people put all these cool mods into something & taken out of perspective & sometimes ask way too much for something that’s worth 1/2 the price of asking if it was all working right, or where people change tons of parts on something like Rotors, calipers, brake lines in a warmer climate like Arizona or California. What happened in the video where people overmodify something is a common thing I see all the time on the car/vehicle market mainly on the older trucks. This is why it’s hard sometimes to find an older good clean original cuz people modify the crap out of something, blow it up, then scrap it.
“Once I found there was no emergency brake, what do we do in an emergency?!” Wait.... you were serious about that? You do not use the handbrake in an emergency haha
My first car was a 1971 Karmann Ghia convertible. I bought it in 1975 for $75 and drove it until the wheels fell off. Honestly I can't remember how I got rid of it but my next car was a 1970 Camaro. Now THAT was a POS that barley lasted a year. I have extremely fond memories of that VW!
I don’t know what he was talking about it needed engine mounts these VWs didnt have motor mounts the engine just bolts to the Tran axel with 4 bolts. No mounts Worked in a VW shop and probably owned 20 over the years and pulled out a lot of engines I think the estimate to restore it was on the moon high
That's probably the guy's shop price, doing it yourself would be CHEAP. The shifter rattling is common on older VW's as well, though I'm sure you're aware of that. It's just a symptom of the shifter coupling and/or bushing being bad. That expert seems to know everything and also nothing at the same time.
From what I saw in this video, I would not even had taken it for a ride. The old expression, "you can't polish a turd' kept going around in my head looking at the cheap mods and neglected upkeep. That is a $500 Ghia plus adjustment for inflating of $2500!
I'll bet the body is full of Bondo too. My brother bought a real cherry looking white '59 K.G. in the mid 60's and then he had some minor fender benders. That exposed all the Bondo and it was loaded with it. Those aluminum bodies were very expensive to fix, that is when you could find a body shop to fix them. So many body shops would pound out what they could and Bondo it smooth. I guess it remained "hand built" that way. LOL!
Any seller selling to Pawn Stars: I would like the price the item is worth Rick: Let me call my expert so he can lowball the price at 10% of what it is really worth.

"looking for cars I can buy and restore and make money"
not like he actually restores them himself... he'd probably make 2x as much if he did.
this guy knows everything you need to know about a volkswagon the classic line
“Once I found there was no emergency brake, what do we do in an emergency?!”
Wait.... you were serious about that? You do not use the handbrake in an emergency haha
seller: how are you buddy?
nobody:
rick: cool man !
I wouldn't take any car advice from a guy who says he freaked out and kept it under 50 once he found out there was no emergency break.
No mounts
Worked in a VW shop and probably owned 20 over the years and pulled out a lot of engines
I think the estimate to restore it was on the moon high
That's probably the guy's shop price, doing it yourself would be CHEAP. The shifter rattling is common on older VW's as well, though I'm sure you're aware of that. It's just a symptom of the shifter coupling and/or bushing being bad. That expert seems to know everything and also nothing at the same time.
Also thought the same on the motor mounts. I've only worked on a couple Ghias, but many bugs. Don't recall any motor mounts
The "car expert" chump is a fool 90 precent of the time
@@emjayrose1 They edit these shows to change the viewer's perception of how things went.
@@lunarpking Yes the engine mount to the transmision, but the transmission has a rubber mount, I beleive he was refering to that.
From what I saw in this video, I would not even had taken it for a ride. The old expression, "you can't polish a turd' kept going around in my head looking at the cheap mods and neglected upkeep. That is a $500 Ghia plus adjustment for inflating of $2500!
I thought the owner modifications were well thought out. Nice driver IMO.
Mossback H, totally vintage stock, those cars were not very impressive, and they were slower than a sloth.
@@sergeantmasson3669 Yep, you are correct. I remember driving a friends in high school.
@@Geoduck. I've owned two of those cars. Mostly fun to drive but way underpowered stock.
LOL!
I love my 69’ Ghia Cabrio :)
Any seller selling to Pawn Stars: I would like the price the item is worth
Rick: Let me call my expert so he can lowball the price at 10% of what it is really worth.
Nit picking to the max. Its a 50yr car. Motor mounts, transmission oil, and emergency brake cable and some paint. Doesnt need much.
A state inspection would require that all be fixed.
Car was a mess.
Rick: "Hey buddy how you doin' HAHAHAHGAHAHA!"
" I Don't Have a Lady Friend" !!!!
" I Have a Wife" 😖😲😖😲
How would you like your steak prepared?
Rick - Look, I really have no idea about these things. Let me call a guy I know who knows about this stuff.
Customer: "I have a nukes I want to sell"
Rick: "Okay let me call up my nuke buddy, he knows how they feel"
Enters Tony Stark
Rick “Let me call my buddy who’s actually already sitting in the passenger seat of my car but I’m going to act like he isn’t here for dramatic effect and commercial breaks” Harrison
Volkswagens are fun and easy to build engine's for. We used the bigger engine's for our rail buggies.
Those rear wheels are something else 🤣
Rebecca would look good in this car. Call her next time. 😃
Especially with the reclining seats.
Rick and I are the same age and as a teen I knew NO ONE who wanted a Karmann Ghia, and god no, they weren’t cool. We all wanted Corvettes. We would have settled for Camaros or Trans Ams. But it was the Corvette.
That's really not the type of car you restore back to original. It's meant to be upgraded and tinkered with
Ha, I should mention for safety's sake that pre-66 VW's did not have a stabiliser bar and the wheels could and would fold and roll over easy.
@@Oracladeus I was a VW mechanic back in the day for a while with a Master VW mechanic for a teacher
@@Oracladeus Ha, my old VW boss stuck an VW Van motor in one
$4500 As-Is? Hells no. This car is worth about $15k right now just the way it is
Says who? Blue book or your own book? 🤣🤣🤣
@@MadmaxMusic93 bluebook? Didn't you know kbb only goes to 1992. If you know about vw you would know they are pricey
Sellers "HAVE" to know that Rick's going to complement them & their merchandise before asking how much they want for an item. And as soon as you give him your asking price, he's going to start tearinf down your item.... which is when you say, "that's why I'm not asking for more....."
I like that
It won’t take $20,000 - $30,000 to restore that car.
Yeah, that seemed a bit high. Maybe $5000-10,000?
My company spend 30-40 grand restoring one
Yes it will, this car is rare and most of the part will have to come from overseas. Mostly from Germany and the parts ain't cheap so be quiet
A high quality paint job half that
4:22 That black modified beetle however , would have liked to see a bit more of that...
they should call this show.....let me call a buddy!!
Original... How long did it take for you to come up with that?
@@Locutus comment section of all thier videos have a bunch of 12 year olds regurgitating the same old lame jokes.

Way cool car. Rick's friend definitely knew what he was talking about
