Officer Gregg yes sir! I'm sure you guys get this often but I live about 10 minutes from KEL-TEC cnc (open to public tour upon appointment) & we have a selection from .22 to .458socom, if you guys get the itch, get in contact, we'd be honored to have you guys in countdown county!
And OG being hung like a horse anchors this show making it immovable. Taflo-gibber jabber-thermos does a good job keeping the new ammo coming. All together excellent collaboration you fckn guys👍 has to be alot of fun, but we "appreciate" the "hardwork" lol
That tail is formed because at those velocities lead behaves like a liquid on impact and that's actually the inverted hollow portion of the front of the slug. When you have an impact like that you'll actually get a jet of lead form in some cases which goes away from the point of impact (the point of highest pressure). It's kind of like how shaped charges work but in reverse. ;)
So now I'm wondering why it acts like a liquid. Is some of the energy from the impact converted to heat? Or is it different, kind of like a reverse non-newtonian fluid?
I believe what you are seeing is a property of all solids that hit with that kind of force. Look at the impact craters on the moon. Many of them have central peaks. Mind you, lead is a soft metal and will flow quite readily. Makes it good for bullets as they get squeezed down a gun barrel that's a little smaller than they are in diameter.
Cratering from extraterrestrial objects is actually hugely more powerful than anything you'd be able to achieve using a firearm, even those used to simulate such impacts. The energies involved in hypervelocity impacts is enough to literally rip apart the bonds holding molecules together, resulting in explosions that are as powerful or more powerful than traditional chemical explosives. With bullets it's more just that lead is soft and easily gets deformed. That softness gives it some liquid-like properties but it's not actually turning into a liquid - that requires heat, which there is plenty of but not enough to flash melt a chunk of lead in the time it takes for the impact to occur. Those peaks you mentioned are a result of something else entirely. There's a great video on RUclips called "1 million fps slow motion bullet impacts" or something like that and you can see what I'm talking about really clearly.
That's a very good point. For things like rock to flow like a liquid without being super heated by something like a meteor impact, they need to be under a lot of pressure. I have some pictures in a physics book showing marble cylinders that have been pressed down while in a high pressure environment. At low pressure, the marble simply fractures as you would expect. At 400ATM, it actually does flow. Yeah, the moon impacts that we can see easily with a telescope are due to the rock being melted from the kinetic energy of the impact.
There is far more than enough kinetic energy in high velocity projectiles to liquefy the metal of the round and target metal plate. This is especially obvious in armor piercing rounds. Some of the metal is even vaporized and forms a plasma. You don't need hyper velocity meteor impacts to observe the effects of liquefying the target substrate and impactor. Any stress applied to a metal enough to break the crystalline structure to sufficient degree can cause enough heating from internal friction to melt the metal. That's how impact forging works. Pieces will get to glow white-hot from the process and even begin to melt if continued without letting the piece rest between shaping.
George Robartes sad you served a crown that only respects your right to defend yourself enough to let you ACTUALLY keep your surplus knife.lol Sorry sure you heard this alot already
Here in Her Majesty's (gawd bless 'er) Kingdom of Englandshire (and those other frightful bits) I find my psychotic whippet more than adequate when it comes to home defence. If a stern "Begone you ruffian lest I summon a constable!" doesn't do the trick then a 30mph brown blur sinking her teeth into the part that should only be seen by one's doctor or one's butler will soon dispatch the blackguard. Pip-pip.
"Great home defence round as long as you live 30 miles from your neighbors and your house is lined with steel." "Wait, never mind, it goes through steel too."
Ha😂 , its the three stooges all in one video. You guys just made my week ! Thanks , Jeff . Keep o.g. and Danny. They just complete this awesome channel .
I mounted a really powerful laser site (can be seen clearly in daylight) to my Moss 500 and one of those bore site lasers to steer it in perfect. With a Foster slug, I can put 6 slugs into a 5" circle at 50 feet. If you had that same setup it would alleviate a lot of error and you would know if it's the shooter, the shotgun or the round being fired. Love seeing Danny again.
You guys touched on my favorite part of shooting: Re-loading the empties! I used to buy el-cheapo .357 rounds on sale, only to fire-form the cases at the range. Not target shooting, just empty the brass. Mad-minute, anyone? Cleaned the spent cases, resize case/punch out the primers, trim cases to length, chamfer the case mouth, de-burr the flash-hole, sort the shells by weight. Sorting by weight insures consistent internal case volume, all other external dimensions being equal. 50 rounds of .357 'Blu Lite Special' might get me 45 or so good cases for re-loading. My favorite cases? Federal .375 in brass finish. Nickle can have a weird 'feel' in carbide sizing dies, sometimes sheds a bit of metal. I miss those days.
As requested by Gregg, the little dingus of lead from the recovered lead plate impact is akin to the jet from a drop of water hitting a fluid. At first the drop creates a crater in the medium, then as the crater rebounds it presses a small jet of material back up out of the medium. It indicates that the lead acts like a fluid during its impact, both the slug and the plate behaves like fluids.
At high enough speeds of collision any solid matter starts to behave kinda like a liquid. That's why that lead tentacle formed. Great video, tanks you three)
Thanks Jeff, that magazine shot was great! Man it's a good thing they didn't get flipped around otherwise you might not have been able to tell the front from the back due to the front mags exploding like that!
Also, I would love to be one of your neighbors. You obviously have zero crime in a two mile radius...... Thank you for all your amazing demonstrations and never ending imagination and jokes.......God bless you.

"...but it just made a gigantic lead crater..." (4:12) How very apt with the Space: 1999 theme playing in the background in certain segments. I like it! Keep up the great work!

Well that would explain my wicked golf slice here in midwest Ohio!
It brings joy to my heart to see one big happy family shooting for our pleasure. thanks for the video.
