  • The Commanders lost to the Jets in heartbreaking fashion again, but more importantly it was another horror show for Sam Howell. The young quarterback was benched for the second straight game and watched Jacoby Brissett lead a second half comeback yet again.
    Craig Hoffman and guest co-host Mark Bullock discuss what the Commanders should do from here at the quarterback position.

    Is it me or are we walking away from Jokoby too easy.. it’s ridiculous. No guarantees with Howell or whoever we draft. He has been the best by a mile at QB. Go with him next season and see where we are then!

    Sam is burned out mentally. Like anyone who has ever burned out at their job, no matter how hard you try, nothing seems to make sense anymore and trying to do the task of getting the job done feels like climbing Mt Everest......with no oxygen. He's done for the season.........rest him for the next 2 games and let's see if he can rebound by next spring. He's not the first pro player this has happened to. It happens in baseball more than you think, and happens in all sports. There's a reason pro players get paid what they deserve.........it's not easy.

      The only way to staying competitive as a franchise is to draft a quarterback whoever’s there to make them and Sam work and Jacoby now we get to see all 3 and who is really the best then we build off of that

    Sam's a young QB and shouldn't be written off. Perhaps he can progress with a new OC and QB coach and an improved OL.

    I mean Jacoby has done it two games in a row. I think he proved the rest of the team haven't has the ability to score points. Tired of ppl saying it's the opposing D not doing this or that. Give me a break. Would love to see both Qbs back next year.

      My hope is we get Olu (if we can't get Caleb Williams) then draft a QB late in the first / early in the second. Resign Brissett (who will be a very highly coveted and high price backup QB) and let the drafted QB sit a year. We need a blue chip LT for the passing game AND the running game. And, frankly, the defense is an even bigger mess than the offense. Man, it's all a disaster from top to bottom.

    This is very good analysis from Mark Bullock. But I'll say this: Sam Howell's fundamentals are so poor (bad footwork, no pocket awareness, leaves clean pockets / runs into sack, batted balls at LOS, doesn't throw with anticipation, and more) that all of this "EB could help him more" talk is essentially useless. Sam Howell does not look like an NFL quarterback in no aspect of the position. Yes, he has "arm talent" but that doesn't make an NFL QB. Sam Howell is like a singer with a gorgeous voice but can never sing in tune. Sometimes, "ugly" singing in tune with the right notes gets the job done. See Louis Armstrong for an example.

    • @craighoffman
      @craighoffman  8 месяцев назад

      Louis Armstrong has one of the best voices ever, so first of all...that. Secondly, the whole point of EB helping him is to minimize some of that stuff. That's literally his job. The minimization of Howell's responsibility gives him a better environment to fix that stuff. Again, that's how coaching works.

    It's basically QB or trade down for more picks. I would be very disappointed if they take someone like Marvin Harrison Jr with a top-4 pick, not because he's not a good player, but because WR is one of the deepest positions in the draft, you can find Pro Bowl receivers in the 2nd round.

    • @darvisalfred5818
      @darvisalfred5818 8 месяцев назад +1

      I would definitely be tempted to take him, he is a generational receiver, immediate impact player.

    • @juandixonformvp
      @juandixonformvp 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@darvisalfred5818 I am skeptical because I've seen so many busts, wasn't Kyle Pitts "can't miss" just a few seasons ago? How much better is Marvin Harrison Jr than Malik Nabers for example? College football is flooded with talented WRs, to take a WR #3 overall is just not good value when you could get a game-changing WR at #10 overall, for example.

  • @kc7490
    @kc7490 8 месяцев назад +3

    Craig I believe I have the solution to how we approach the off-season.
    We trade down. Right now we hold the 3rd overall pick which is subject to change but let’s be honest, we likely don’t win anymore games this year. The cardinals will assuredly go MHJ at 2 if they continue to hold that pick, leaving us with the pick of the litter at QB2, which the patriots and raiders will absolutely be interested in. Not to mention the jets will almost assuredly try to trade up to get one of the top 2 OL bc they have the worst line in the league and a 40 year old QB coming off an Achilles tear (Tennessee also may look to trade up for one). My plan is to trade back for picks next year so that if Howell falls short with a head coach that can insulate his Howellness, we can use that package of picks to trade up for a signal caller while having filled out the roster with quality picks this year. If Howell succeeds with that coach (like a Dave canales or Ben Johnson type) that’s even more picks we can use to fill out this roster. It also doesn’t preclude us from taking a QB this year on day 2-3. This gives us more shots at a QB, a chance to evaluate Howell in an offense that compliments him, and a Howie roseman type sea of picks to work with.

    • @RonRova
      @RonRova 8 месяцев назад +1

      I'm feeling that. If we can trade down to the 5 or 6 range, plus pick up a maybe a 2nd and, most important, a 1st for next year, we still may be able to pick up Fashanu or Alt. If not, maybe Brock. In anycase we'll still get a good player, because its painfully obvious we have holes.

    • @craighoffman
      @craighoffman  8 месяцев назад +1

      I don't hate this plan. It's too early to commit to anything, but for a roster that needs a lot - it's not a bad idea to consider.

    • @kc7490
      @kc7490 8 месяцев назад

      @@craighoffman I don’t think a lot of this hinges on what the bears do at 1 either, but it does hinge on if the new GM thinks Howell is worth developing, can they isolate the good things he does, is he better than anyone on the board at that point, etc. I think we already know these will be questions going into 2024. This is just coming from someone who thinks the highs of howell can absolutely be built on and someone who also thinks that putting another QB in the same situation (I know we have money and picks) will just lead to that guy going through similar woes. Teams like the Eagles and Ravens have tons of picks within the first two days on a consistent basis, I just want a taste of that lol.

    Jacoby has made this EB offense very different. He is 31 and not old, keep him around. The way he played yesterday against a stout Jets defense...time to have the conversation about the type of QB needed for EB's system and this system does rely on a solid TE that can pick up YAC...Bates and Turner have get more involved because Thomas is getting up there in age.
    Side note, Jamin Davis said earlier this year that having Khalik on the field with them was great for him as a complement I'd like to see this defense with Barton, Hudson and Davis on the fields at the same time.....4-3 package. Move Payne and Allen to create mismatches around and let Ridgeway and Mathis disrupt that middle. But honestly, it looks like Ron is having fun calling the defense and they are playing better and faster, there were missed tackles yesterday but the guys were in position.
    Get a true HC in here but if he wants to finish his 5th and final year as a DC (the defense truly let games slip under JDR), I would not be mad at that.

    Craig, can you ask Logan P: what’s the dynamic in the locker room when you have a veteran tight end literally screwing his young quarterback by giving the other team the ball? Is that a potential issue for Sam? Would a Matt Ryan get greater accountability from his receivers? These guys seem to be dropping a ton of easy to catch balls from Sam, which they suddenly catch from Jacoby.

    • @craighoffman
      @craighoffman  8 месяцев назад

      I think it's more that Jacoby throws more in rhythm and that makes things easier. It's harder to catch balls on plays that are helter skelter, which is the whole offense with Sam right now. It's not like yelling at them more will make them catch it. Playing better ball and more confidence all around will lead to better results. Tough gig.

    I think Jacoby beung able to move the ball in today's game was a bit deceptive. 1) The Jets defense were trying to strip the ball instead of making tackle giving up extra yards. 2) The refs were calling a lot of penalties on the Jets, especially a couple of PI calls that they were not calling in the first half. 3) Trevor Siemian was so bad. He kept bouncing passes and kept stopping the clock, giving us more time to come back.

    • @bizzo2g
      @bizzo2g 8 месяцев назад +1

      And what specifically does any of your points have to do with Brisset's ability to move the offense?
      Today was a lot more telling about Brissets ability than last week because the game was a lot closer which removes the prevent defense narrative

    • @mickeymoon
      @mickeymoon 8 месяцев назад

      @bizzo2g My points 1 and 2 helped Brisset. It allowed him to get 1st downs. You can see that Jets defense were not tackling, but trying to strip the ball and by doing that, they were able to get couple of 1st downs. He also got 2 PI penalties, one of them in the end zone. I'm not saying they were not PIs. I'm just stating facts. The two PI penalties helped them to score, especially the one in the end zone. I'm not bashing Brisset. I'm not saying he's a bad QB. I'm just pointing out facts that helped him. And these facts will even out across the whole season - meaning, there will be games where he won't get these benefits and he'll show that he's a high level backup QB.
