  • In today's fly tying tutorial I show you how to tie a Euro Jig Pheasant Tail Nymph. It's a great pattern for catching trout while Euro nymphing and has become a popular variation of the the trusty pheasant tail nymph and catches a lot of trout.

    I have been using very similar nymphs in Victoria and absolutely killing it.

      Great little patterns, I've been tying more and more Euro style patterns on jig hooks, they work great

    In Poland, i needed to make only one part of tail, because it's more effective, but your pattern(that i made before) it's still good in polish-mountain water :). Greetings

    Very nice Johan. Ive been using a '101' as my bomb fly on my kiwinymph set up which works real well, but I recon a '101' on a jig hook would be lethal. Is it able to be done?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  3 года назад

      Definitely can be done. Just swap out the hook for a size 10 jig hook and tie the fly upside down because the hook point rides up on a jig hook due to the weight of the bead. Not that I think that detail matters to the fish.

    I make a very similar one to this, Johan, but use a CDC collar instead of the squirrel you used. It's one of my most effective flies in Montana. You may also want to check out a minimalist Frenchie for your waters: Fly Tying Plastique Frenchie | Hackles & Wings ( ruclips.net/video/-rEj6P-Q974/видео.html ). It's super easy to tie and sinks quickly, like a Perdigon. It's been very effective for me. The key to it is the slim body, so if you tie it, use an 8/0 thread or thinner. The guy who made the video ( Simon? ) uses 18/0 Semperfli Nano Silk in Brick Beige color. That thread is nearly unbreakable and super thin. The Brick Beige color blends in pretty well with other materials, so now I use it for most of my tying. Because of the thinness of the thread, you can create dubbing loops without building bulk. I can easily split the thread as well.

      Oh I will definitely try the CDC collar. Have just bought a bunch of CDC so perfect timing. It's not my Simon tying that Frenchie but I have been using a thread Frenchie pattern Simon showed me that is pretty much the same just different colours. It's with black 30D Veevus GSP (again almost unbreakable) for the body, barred hackle feathers for the tail and red copper wire for the rib. I tend to use either peacock blend or purple UV Ice dub for the thorax with a gold tungsten bead. Works extremely well on a couple of rivers here. Thanks for sharing the info and link.

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing I haven't tried purple ice dub for the thorax yet, but I have used UTC Holo Tinsel Purple Medium for the body and did well on it. So I expect the purple thorax will also do well. Good idea. I've been experimenting with different ways of applying CDC as a "veil." Check this one: Crossover Nymph Fly Tying Tutorial ( ruclips.net/video/udEZsDblpq4/видео.html ). It's fast, but ads some bulk and wastes half the fibers on a feather. The other method I'm now practicing is using the SwissCDC Multiclamp to trap the fibers on one side of the CDC feather, splitting the GSP thread, and inserting the trapped fibers into the split thread. With this method I'm using all the fibers from a feather and have a better looking fly. I've been viewing Marc Petitjean's videos on how to do this.
      By the way, that Crossover Nymph is another excellent fly on the rivers I fish. I tie them in sizes 14 and 16.

      Awesome thanks. Having a look now. Ordered some CDC clamps too recently just waiting for them to arrive. I was planning to give the split thread method a test as well.

    How weight is that?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад

      This one is a 3.3mm tungsten bead on a size 14 hook so decent weight but you can change the bead size to match any hook size or go bigger or smaller as needed.
