I was at a bar once and this jerk rolled up, blasted us all deaf, revved a few times for good measure and stepped off his hog chest puffed full of hot air and bravado.. This older woman nearby was giving him the stink eye, and when she saw what he did next... she went nuts! Haha When he popped his helmet down, and *pulled out ear plugs...* She jumped up, "Oh _HELL NO!_ Hey asshole! If you don't want to hear your fugly fart machine, what the fuck makes you think we want to hear it? You block out the deafening obnoxious noise for yourself, but did you bring enough ear plugs for the whole class? I doubt it, because you're obviously an inconsiderate asshole! Bad enough you gave everyone on the block a migraine, but you just _haaaad_ to blast off a few more toots before stepping off! Fuck you, and your obnoxious bike!" She went on like that for another minute or so, as everyone nearby cheered quietly with the occasional clap or leg slap and aggressive point. Whe he tried to pull the safety card, she said "Yeah right, those annoying ass pipes make me more likely to run you over on purpose just to shut you up! If I had to follow that thing on the highway, you'd be in a ditch after mile 5! Nice try. Instead of dressing like Batman, buy a safety vest ya jerk!" Ahahaha "dressed like Batman" lmfaoo Haha it was pretty amazing, that lady is my hero.
If we're going technical, let's also mention that people should drop the 'more' when using that sentence. 500 is 500x1. So the sentence should be 'it costs 500 times the other option'. Even clearer would be 'it costs 500 times as much as the other option'. '500 times more' is technically meaningless because 'more' isn't defined as a number, even though we all understand what someone means when they say it.
@@REM44MAG why spell out "gixxer" when the whole point of calling it that is to verbally shorten "GSXR" By spelling out the shorter form you took longer to say the long form lol.
How about knockoff ones? Give ‘em sum luv Half the price too! Seriously i Have knockoff ones made in bali, they made my 125cc scooter bike sounded exactly like a slightly anorexic harley 😅
To get the actual effect of a straight pipe you would have to take out the catalytic converter. The benefits come from no gas restrictions so keeping the catalytic converter is counter intuitive if you are trying to straight pipe. Also the engine must be tuned for this. This is commonly used in car drag racing. I assume the same concepts apply.
Free Yoshimura Exhaust with Suzuki GSX-R1000 Purchase Through August ultimatemotorcycling.com/2018/06/15/free-yoshimura-exhaust-with-suzuki-gsx-r1000-purchase-through-august/
I ride a 2016 Honda NC700X w/stock muffler that you can barely hear. I've had guys at work telling me I should get an after-market muffler or take off the one I have to make my bike louder. I live in a residential subdivision and leave for work at 6am. Do I really want to wake up at least six sets of neighbors, some with babies, everyday? I like the fact I can start my bike and roll with nobody looking out the window at me.
I have a neighbor with a noisy car, and it's kind of annoying to hear every day. My motorcycle is pretty quiet, and I like it that way. Noisy motorcycles are obnoxious in populated areas. They belong on the race track.
if you're a good neighbour then i suggest you stick to the stock muffler. I ride a Duc Monster and the stock exhaust are loud enough. i usually only start the engine when im about to ride off slowly. No time for warming up and yes there other bikes in my estates with loud exhaust. It annoys me in the middle of the night.
Shorties are best to reduce weight I'm buying the voodoo shorty for my 00' busa as to you can't beat the sound of the voodoo shorty on a busa or a old gen 1 gsxr 1000.
My 2008 BMW K1200S exhaust stock muffler tip was 17.5 bs Just put a 8" Carbon fiber DELKEVIC . Left the baffle in weighs maybe 3 lbs. Dyno shows adds approximately 2 more horsepower.
Sounds like shit if you really want a good sounding bike get a harley 2011 or older fuck those Japanese rice burning junk piece of shit bikes just like the new harley because they are now made overseas
@@ThatRealCoolWhiteGuy All they're good for is the sound (which you already knew). $500 for no statistically significant power output? I'd rather spend $20 on some aluminized steel, exhaust clamp, and a can of high temp spray paint to replace the stock muffler and properly channel the exhaust gases away.
Depends what your doing and how your doing it! I have done a decat and have straight pipe and not only does it sound great with power commander and a auto tuner made it a lot stronger and made it a lot more rideable! But it was way to Lean from the factory now she is set to last decades! I am gonna get a nice polished muffler but I just hate the can on mine!
Yeah dude I've been riding my bikes without mufflers for 40 years yeah I'm new at this. I'll continue to ride without mufflers till I die, because none of my bikes ever had any issues from riding them without mufflers
You buy a $20 drap slip-on to help the drone and resonance then tune it for that set up they sound amazing. Especially when they idle at 3.5k-4k on 111 torco fuel
I've had loud bikes and quiet bikes and really prefer the quiet ones. I've found that wearing hi viz gear gets you noticed just as much as a loud bike and it doesn't crank off the neighbors.
Depends if the back pressure comes from the catalyst or the can. If it’s the can, you need to remap your fuel injection or re-jet your carbs if it’s an old bike. The “big, under engine box” is the catalytic converter.
Most bikes have no catalytic converter or resignator. That's strictly new gen bikes. Yes fuel injected bikes will likely need new MAPs which is easy to do. Also some carbs don't need re-jetted. Some want to breath as they are jetted and handle it fine with the baffles and or muffler gone or a whole new exhaust on there and no muffler. My 1982 yamaha xs400R Seca loves the MAC 2 to 1 headers/exhaust I put on without baffles or any can. But it is ridiculously loud and heat-score I will admit. Lol but it shoots flames and sounds amazing in the high 5,000 to 10,000 rpm range
Please everyone take this with a pinch of salt. This isn’t at all a straight pipe, it is simply removing the muffler. The Cat and all the the restrictive elements of the system are still there. Literally, the gains are made when the entire thing is removed and replaced with, you guessed it, a straight through pipe. Surely these guys know this meaning the video is disingenuous.
I live close to a hwy and hate hearing Harleys go by for me I love the sound of a high revving sport bike🏍 but I hate ricer cars love me some muscle car roar😆👍
One of my friends lost his muffler when we rode to the coast about 3 and a half hours from home. 600cc sport bike, it was the LONGEST RIDE HOME EVER. thankfully he now has a proper slip on 😂
Thank god we were only less than a half hour from home, my buddy had bolts vibrate loose and the muffler and it fell off, his Kawasaki Z750S, you could probably hear that ear splitting shit in the next county XD. He still has a crazy loud exhaust but at least he has a slip on shorty pipe with some kind of baffle in it now
We've got a guy, a learner, down our street with an R125 with the baffles removed. its LOUD! Obnoxiously loud! you can here him start it up from where we live 400 Yds away just at tick over! When he pulls away, he takes off like the start of a super-bike race shattering any windows which aren't fitted with re-enforced glass, and rides to his place of work, A garage about 1 mile away at the other end of the village! REALLY??? Problem is, he rides like he sounds, BADLY! Do I, as a life-long biker want to be associated with this kind of behavior? Not at all!
Absolutely Roy, it's more about the tone of the exhaust note, rather than overall volume...bikes can be too loud! A nice tone (which no modern 125 will ever have) is great, but any bike with a overly loud exhaust is not fun to ride, and just annoys the hell out of other people.
Pffft bro how else am I supposed to sound cool when i make poor financial decisions spending my whole paycheck on a monthly payment and crazy dumb insurance premiums because of my awful driving record and cant afford a proper exhaust.
Years ago I had a 1973 Z1. One day I wondered what it would sound like with only the header pipes. It sounded like a Piper Cub at idle and more like a John Deere riding around. A good pipe and muffler are a tuned system that will make your ride sing!
I think it all depends on the type of Motorcycle In my case, I have a Triumph Street Twin and I removed both Mufflers, saved a lot of money and got the same results as if I installed a pair of British Customs Turn Out Performance Tips which Costs $400. The Catalytic Converter is still there and it's not obnoxiously loud at all.
There's a cat in it, but that chamber is also where the majority of the sound deadening happens. If you look at the can on a new R1 you'll notice it's basically just a straight pipe to the underbike chamber
Fuck me running. There's a suitcase of a cat under there. A "straight pipe" would include removing that. Is this Ametuer hour LMAO. No hp gains cause you left the restrictive part on there. Redo the video remove and straight pipe it then show the results
He's talking out his asshole. Lol. A noob is some one that straight pipes their bike. He says lol. What a joke. He absolutely knows something about nothing lol. Dude isn't a mechanic. He looks like he just came from the a Abercrombie store lmao. Under engine chamber he says lol. He can't stand loud bikes. My god what a tool. Discouraging people from doing this is just crazy. Yes u can do it with mods. The right mods. He's an idiot and don't know shit. Yes its going to backfire on occasions. But, that's due to not having the jets and valves tuned right or having the right injectors blah blah blah. Harley has been doing this for many years and so have many other bike companies lol. So to call people Boobs for doing this. What in the he'll are they Boobs about? Its irrelevant to putting armor all on your tires. You shouldn't armor all your tires period it causes premature wear. I shouldn't straight pipe the bike with out the right mods either. And if u buy cans or "straight" pipes they're really not. They still have a sort of silencer in them too. So don't be so stupid guy. Know your shit bro.
doesn't matter if it's not too bad for your bike, it's _definitely_ bad for your kneecaps when you finally get unlucky and stall by that guy's house you ride by every night at 2 AM.

might make a bit more power with a straight pipe if you re-jet the carby and open up the air box? air flow from the exhaust doesnt mean anything if you arent getting any more fuel/air in.

The reason the R3 did not loose any power is because it has that bottom collector for the exhaust and that is where the majority of the exhaust work is done since the cat is in there. Ari if you removed that from the bike, not only would it actually be louder to what people on the street are doing but it would likely result in less power.
An exhaust is only as effective as it's most restrictive part, which will always be the catalytic converter. A slip on/removing the muffler won't effect performance at all.
@@trey__918 well you must keep those on your little squid rocket. I can't tell you much about keeping the cats on a bike. Those go first. Now tell me about performance changes. Must suck to live in California fruits nuts and flakes
Unless motorcycle engines are drastically different than any other engine made, a straight piped exhaust does not hurt the engine. In fact the less restriction you can get in the exhaust flow, allows the engine to perform better. But I'm just a mechanic.
The exhaust valve problem will only be a valid worry when running no headers. With even a few inches of pipe coming off the head, the cold air isnt going to be able to get to them.
Worked in the Industry for nearly 20 years, from Accessories Importer to factory rep to sales floor...Sold hundreds and hundreds of exhaust systems....have owned 19 personal bikes and ridden over 800k miles in the U.S. Europe and the Middle East.....I have never, ever purchased or ran an aftermarket exhaust. Tires, helmets, riding gear, trip expenses are where my money goes, not to make more noise . A lighter, properly tuned exhaust(controller+exhaust) can obviously be necessary and highly beneficial to a racer. Without a stopwatch and race points, they are meaningless. The performance benefits are negligible without a stopwatch, the noise irritating for anything more than moto masturbation and most hp based tunings are detrimental to actual, real world performance. But I do appreciate all the riding the income from the sale of them has made possible for me...and yes,I do generally share my opinion with my customers and have sold more than a few top line helmets as a more worthy alternative investment from having shared my opinion....
RainX wiped inside the visor helps a lot. Also, keep the vents open and if possible wear a thin balaclava underneath. Always crack the visor when stopped. Finally, keep your nasal passages clear and breath through the nose, not the mouth. Sounds stupid, but it works for me.
I have the problem that if I don't open my visor in the winter or in the rain, I can't see a thing, but if I do I get sick, no matter what I'm wearing under my helmet
I've done that on my SV! It sounds great the muffler is a drag, filtering is made easy but after one hour ridding it my head and ears hurt so bad I felt like I was sick in the end no muffler was killing all the fun... I have put on a slip on muffler that comes with a removeable tip, nut and bolt, that I use on long trips!
I’m okay with the stock exhaust. I love wind and the speed but I freaking hate noises. So if there was even quieter exhaust available... I would go buy that one
Loud pipes save lives. I don't ride motorcycles, but I do hear them riding in my blind spot, especially in my van. There have been numerous times, where I hear what sounds like a motorcycle, so I look for it, see it, and the rider is safe, because I'm aware. I almost ran a Honda Aspencade off the road, because the luxury bike didn't make any noise. I've never had that problem with any Harley Davidson nor any sport bike. I can hear them, before I can see them. That's important, when it's day time, and they don't have their headlights on.
The Honda just needs baffles removed and you'll hear it. Lol and Honda sport bikes are loud and old bikes with a nice header. Yes some stock bikes can be too quite because of Karen's these days.. Loud bikes let's people know we're in blind spot for sure. Happened to me before on bike and in car. My 1982 yamaha xs400R Seca loves the MAC 2 to 1 headers/exhaust I put on without baffles or any can muffler.. But it is ridiculously loud and heat-score I will admit. Its a myth that straight piping burns valves. The myth originated in the carbureted days when you had to rejet your engine after a new pipe but with modern EFI your bike with automatically accommodate for your straight pipe.
👏 Well done ✅ Future video subject: "Is modifying the air box bad for a motorcycle?" People tend to drill holes in their air boxes (like you did on the scooter) but it's a different story when you can't cover them up with tape 😂
sennsir_ For bikes like the cbr650f and r6 have their airbox straight under the the gas tank where air is channeled throughout it. Cutting a hole into These bikes will not harm it much but it will cause the air to flow incorrectly affecting the tuned airbox that the manufacturer made. But that's just what I heard
Not really worth doing, but as long as the holes are before the filter (there are dummies out there :) it is fine to do. The 02 sensors will detect any change in air flow and compensate for it. That's why to get any real gains from high flow filters and sports exhausts you need to re-map the ECU to tell it what to do, otherwise it will try it's best to run stock power and you risk running lean or rich.
You removed a part of the exhaust system, this R3 still has a lot of stuff like a catalytic converter which create most of the backpressure. Inthis bikes case, you could remove the muffler, it wouldnt make any difference as you prooved or damage the engine since the backpressure didnt really change.
Its needed in Lagos,Nigeria where we have so many blind drivers... they are either texting, calling or eating while driving... even sleeping and driving
So for anyone wondering here's the real deal. In the majority of cases the muffler only helps dampen the sound, the thing that really changes what's going on with the bike is the length and diameter of the exhaust tube. Yeah on different things there might be catalytic converters or resonators or other stuff like Y pipes that all play role in performance but usually the main thing you're looking for is that the pipe is long enough that it doesn't allow fresh air to scavenge back in to the exhaust and detonate unburnt fuel inside the header which may cause problems or worse performance. The other thing is having cold air scavenge all the way back in through the exhaust and get into the engine causing damaged by rapidly cooling pieces that were just super hot and at operating temperature which could cause warping or other such things on top of performance getting worse. Another thing is usually by chopping off the muffler and shortening the exhaust can the bike will have less restriction, which almost always results in running more fuel lean because now there is more flow for more air to enter and exit the engine which isn't good because a lean engine runs hotter and usually doesn't run very good unless it's been actually retuned so that it doesn't run lean and can now utilize the extra air it's getting. Even if the bike runs better and seems fine it's more than likely running too hot and there's a good chance you'll end up screwing something up or just straight up melt the piston and blow a hole through it and ruin your bike. It really doesn't help if you're not like me and don't baby your bike and Rev it so hard it bounces off the rev limiter when you're going down the highway. There are a lot of other factors that goes on with the exhaust that can change performance but the main point to take away is you don't want cold air hitting your valves you don't want explosions happening inside of your exhaust and you don't want your vehicle to run lean. You don't want any kind of crackling noises as you let off the throttle but if it pops at the tip of your exhaust after it's already out of the system that should be fine and is usually a pretty good indicator that you're actually running a little bit richer then what you may even need. So in conclusion, leave your exhaust alone. I don't care that you think you're going to make it better. If you're watching this video you definitely don't know what you're doing. Louder ≠ better. Now if for some reason you're in the same boat I was and you got your bike without an exhaust or some sort of piece of crap Chineseium JB weld nightmare because some idiot decided to get rid of the perfectly good stock exhaust because "LoUd ExHaUaT dOpE" and you're wondering what to do then here's what you do. Try and find the actual parts lists for your bike and find your exhaust and the part number for it and see how much it is or how much a used one is on eBay. If you come to find out that buying a stock exhaust Is the same amount or even more than buying aftermarket definitely consider going that route, but be cautious. Lots of these stupid websites advertise something that fits your bike when in reality it's some crappy universal thing that requires modification or just straight up doesn't fit your bike at all even though you put in all your vehicle information and it's straight up says that part fits your bike. You could go to a fabricator and have something custom made but I don't really recommend that unless for some reason it's your last option because there's no guarantee it will come out the way you want it to or need it to and it will probably be expensive. I actually have a big background in fabrication and lots of certifications and could have done everything myself but it still wouldn't have been worth it because of the equipment and materials needed not to mention the time and space to actually make something that worked. Again if you have really no idea what you're doing you're better off going and having a motorcycle shop get what is needed and install it correctly so that it's done correctly and if it's not and something happens it's on their ass and they responsible instead of you trying to do it yourself and ruining a brand new part that you now cannot return. So yeah do your own research like I had to and don't do stupid things to your exhaust.
Thanks, 50 Years on 2 wheels and I still cringe, and call the noise cops, on ridiculously tinny, loud bikes ripping through my neighborhood. I was always respectful on my bike. The cops, also, hear your bike coming.
I'd like an aftermarket exhaust, one that was a lot lighter than the one that came with the bike but no louder (quieter would be fine also). Seems like the manufacturers of after market mufflers know their market well, so they don't make such a thing. My bike is a Royal Enfield Continental GT, 650cc, 1999.
I also believe this is very difficult. The space inside the pipe has fibers and chambers to muffle sound so less space is more sound. I worked in a muffler company as a teenager but i'm no engineer or mechanic, just remember how it was when they were welded or when I was adding the fiber myself
I have an 02 monster 750 with two bothers slip ons with K&N air filter. I removed the cans to clean the chain. Of course I had to start it. Man it sounded great! Haha. Ran rough though as I drove it through the back yard. Still lead me to this video cause I think the duc sounded great
The biggest detriment to running a straight pipe is the (almost universal) loss in length of the pipe, not necessarily the "backpressure". In fact, if you have camshafts that have even a LITTLE bit of overlap, you WANT a free flowing, straight-through design. Many times, when a bike loses power with less backpressure/more open exhaust, it's due to the collector losing so much length that the scavenging goes out the window and you get terrible reversion in the low-mid range. You see that with a lot of 2-1 setups for Harleys that are short in length and have primaries that are too large in diameter, especially on the M8 bikes. Giant hole in torque in the 2k-3,500 RPM range that can't be tuned out on the really short, open pipe 2-1 setup. That torque dip can be cured by either decreasing the diameter of the primaries, or moving the merge section out later and increasing the primary length. Longer tubes = more torque. You give up 2HP on the top end to gain 20ft/lbs at 3,500. It's the area under the curve that you give up with super open, short exhausts that makes it "feel" like it lost a ton of power.
Running a 4 stroke engine without a muffler will not cause any substantial damage to a modern engine. It will just be really loud. Unless it has a cat conv. And most modern engines will. 4 strokes do not need back pressure, and backfiring happens under hard engine braking anyway. Your muffler just hides it. Furthermore cold air reversion happens on the intake side, not the exhaust. This dude just hates running no mufflers and is looking to justify that difference in taste beyond simple opinion.
... I know this is a couple years old .. but for anybody JUST NOW viewing this .. I have a 05 Triumph Sprint ST 1050. After 4 years of riding it stock I removed the muffler and straight piped it. The muffler on this bike sits under the seat. So even with just a exhaust tip and straight pipe from header, it actual looks decent. As far as performance ... a 1000 cc engine moves more air then a 300. So any changes to the flow velocity of the exhaust gases will have a positive effect. WITH THE PROPER TUNE!!! My stock Sprint made 114 hp on the dyno. With straight piped and proper tune she pulls 126hp. TUNE IS IMPORTANT !!! It is true, removed the stock muffler and it sounded hollow and a lot of crackle / backfiring. Each step I got closer to the right ECU setup the crackling and back firing reduced. Now, it runs good and yes it has more hp but HP is not everything. Throttle response is up .. she pulls a lot better from 65 to 120 in 6 gear. She does have a nice backfiring crackle when letting of the throttle quickly .. sounds sweeeeeet .....long story short ... if you change something of the engine....tune it correctly ..
Most bikes have no catalytic converter or resignator. That's strictly new gen bikes. Yes fuel injected bikes will likely need new MAPs which is easy to do. Also some carbs don't need re-jetted. Completely on the same page as this guy. When it comes to engine sounds louder doesn't necessarily mean better. It's more about the tone than the volume for me.
I agree. I found by de snorkeling my KLR and installing a K&N air filter I can hear the deeper intake burbling and still be aware of my surroundings. Runs better too.
Built a custom exhaust for my zx9r with a glass pack. Sounds good, really loud and haven't come across another bike that sounds the same. Why so loud? I love riding right next to people on their phone in low gear around 6k rpm. Had a lady actually say, do you mind? I'm on my phone! I leave at 4:30am every week day and keep the revs low and none of my neighbors mind.
That lady would infuriate me. I would have an answer to the question; “do you mind, I’m on the phone?” I don’t think she would have liked my answer at all. I don’t think she would have enjoyed having to buy a new phone. I live in LA and practice the same technique as you. There are SO many jackasses on their phones while driving and I have been guilty of deleting some side view mirrors. to be fair, I uh… have anger issues I need to work through though 😅
If you leave the cat in place, it won't affect the valves as back pressure is still the same, just an increase in volume. Urban brawlers are just short straight through pipes and sound great with the cat in place.
My S1000RR was in an accident and I’ve been riding around straight piped until I get a new system. It does not damage the bike, however, it is a bit boggy down low and that is because with just an open akro header the exhaust stream flows past the wideband sensor too quickly which is making it indicate the engine is running lean even though it isn’t. So to compensate my ecu is injecting more fuel which is making it run rich. If I partially block the exhaust the AF/R reading will go down and no change has been made to the tune. It simply is getting a bad reading from too fast of an exhaust stream. I normally make 197whp on 93, but I only make 186whp with an open header. It doesn’t damage anything, but it doesn’t run correctly either.
Remember a texting boy or girl on a SUV will not notice you even you got an 18 wheeler horn + christmas lights. Never, never assume they will notice you because you're revvin, sound goes backwards, they're in front + closed windows + using music and social media.
With an aftermarket exhaust on my 916 & 999 I would get pulled ober for doin' 25 in a 40 - with a stock exhaust on my 1098 I never once got looked at doin' 85 in a 55 even at 0200. Plus my neighbors became much friendlier to me !!
Taking the muffler off won't make a difference to BHP, but you should see a difference in the power delivery. Any chance you can put up both graphs, would like to see a difference (if any)?
Jeff O “gays” are typically flamboyant and crave attention..... much like riders who remove their muffler... “look at me everyone! Look at me!” So your logic is flawed
As a guy who builds engines for a living, straight pipes will never hurt your engine. Not changing your oil frequently will in a hurry. I feel like this would be obvious.....
Tested the wrong bike. The under engine box is the muffler on that bike. You took the wrong muffler off. Most higher end (race) bikes only have one muffler.
Respect! I'm the president of a motorcycle club and I constantly preach against loud pipes. I have arguably the fastest bike in the club and mine is whisper-quiet. My neighbors found out I had motorcycles when I moved in and a few of the older neighbors actually confronted me about my "loud" pipes before I even brought the bikes to the new place. Now that they have gotten to know me I have no issues with them, but there is a large percentage of people who look at motorcyclists in general as being "bad" people all around and loud pipes make it worse. Don't perpetuate that stereotype by being a jerk rider with a loud motorcycle. (Motorcyclists are not automatically jerks if they have loud pipes, but it is worse if they combine bad driving habits and loud pipes.) Further, the "loud pipes save lives" was started as a smart alec comment back in the early days of MCs. There are plenty of searches you can do to prove the myth of loud pipes. Whenever I hear someone with loud pipes on a motorcycle I think as you do...noob, ignorant, or uncaring of the effect on the environment and others. Some are just straight-up uncaring louts. Why do the guys with the loudest pipes wear the least PPE?
Myrune1 I respectfully disagree with your statement. My 1980 xs 1100 is running straight pipes It is obnoxious loud I've almost been hit a few times from airheads in their cagers as soon as I goose it it gets attention and they pay attention. I know my pipes will save me one day while I respect your opinion as you have obviously been riding longer than me and have more experience I must say I would rather have my straight pipes
It's hard to convince most people otherwise, but having loud pipes really aren't going to save you. You might think they will, but it's bad driving habits that put you into a situation that requires the need to make use of the loud pipes in order to 'save you'. If you have to "goose it" to get someone's attention, then you're demonstrating a bad riding habit, and also that you're not an experienced rider. If you realize that someone isn't paying attention, the proper course of action as a motorcyclist is to increase the distance between you and them, which (if they're in front of you), you SLOW DOWN, and back away from them, giving you plenty of reaction time for something they may do. You DON'T goose it, which implies you probably stayed close to them, or you passed them. A very unintelligent decision(if you passed them), as you're putting the BIG, HEAVY, SLOW-BRAKING car behind you, which is a VERY bad thing for you being on a motorcycle, especially if you know they're an airhead! It also shows you have no self-control, and you don't consider that slowing down is a proper solution to your problem. The reason why I call that no self-control, is that you're only considering rolling on the throttle/acceleration/noise of you bike as a solution to your problem(related to adrenaline of course, and also the fact that your bike accelerates so quickly you think it's your only option), wheras your best option is to slow down. That's just my personal opinion, and perhaps maybe will help you form a better opinion yourself. As someone who has been riding for a decent amount time, with no accidents, and my bikes have always been quiet, except for my current bike (Which is a 2013 ZX-14R that has awful sounding shorty slip-ons that are getting replaced this week), and I've avoided every accident I could have encountered by my own actions that didn't rely on my exhaust. I also ride 15k miles per year. So let that set an example for you about how many more vehicles I encounter compared to the average rider. A good rider is one who assumes he's invisible to everyone, and already knows the next action of the people around him. Again, I ride a ZX-14R and my solution doesn't immediately resort to rolling on the throttle. I'm capable of understanding when I need to brake and separate myself from someone. Doesn't mean I'm a bad rider, it just means I have enough self-control to handle the bike I'm riding. And to keep myself safe from others. I hope you continue to enjoy riding though, it's a hobby I'm glad I got into! Ride safe!
How right you are. When ride i sometimes hear loud bikes but it takes a while to figure out which direction. If people rev up to alert someone else who is about to take them out then they are a rookie. a good rider does not sit in a position where he will get hit when a cager suddenly decides to change lanes
i can tell you this im not a rookie rider man my pipes have saved me more than once i always ride like im invisible. i dont put myself in those situations im thrown into them i dont go looking for bad situations i dont go out racing you must have misunderstood when i said goose it. i dont mean speed up i mean rev it up im always covering my clutch and brakes my fast reactions are also a contributing factor to my safety i anticipate and adapt. i dont go looking for trouble i just ride for the fun of it. not to be a speed demon yes i have fun with it but again i do NOT put myself in those situations morons in cages do if i see someon being stupid i back off or get away from them i dont want to be the next guy laying my biike down or getting hit by someone who doesnt pay attention while i respect you are clearly a more experianced rider im not trying to be a part of the problem im trying to set an example for younger riders so they dont end up in wrecks or other dangerous situations ive rode with rookies and tried to set a good example and not be a part of the problem but rather the solution.
Been running with straight pipes on the same bike for almost 3 years. Does it sounds better, you’re damn right. Does it perform better probably not, do old people see the bike...no, but they sure as fuck hear it 😏😉
You are just as likely to “burn” a valve with a muffler on. A muffler does little to nothing as far as back pressure. Your 02 sensor is what talks the computer, take off anything behind that, and it’ll perform the exact same.
You will lose power on a dual sport bike if u chop the exhaust off mine fell off before and it sounded like a helicopter was 10ft above me and it lost hp
if the exhaust is the same length, all the way to the muffler, you shouldnt lose any power, but maybe gain a slight bit, depending on your bike. Honestly though a slip on is the way to go.
Isn't the atmosphere pushing down the pipe at 1 bar, 14psi. So at low revs you're losing power with a short pipe as air pushes back around the exhaust valve before it closes and at high revs the shockwave hits the atmosphere and bounces back down the pipe inhibiting flow in a series of standing waves overheating the exhaust valves shortening engine life
I removed the stock baffles on a Honda shadow 1100 and it lost 10-15 hp and 25 mph top speed. I ended up putting on a set of tuned cobra drag pipes and then it ran awesome. A properly tuned exhaust should not be excessively loud.
it would probably run bad, since the backpressure created by the R3's is under the bike, and that of the gsxr is in the Muffler. And you most likely need a tune to fix it, because it's pretty much a straight pipe.
My take away from this: I *might* damage my exhaust valves. And that's it. All the rest is about opinions and appearances. I guess that wrapped 4 into 1 no exhaust on my old '76 CB 750K is happening after all. Because it sounds like a goddamn 1962 Ferrari. But my Triumphs will keep their cans, as I have no intention of doing top end rebuilds on those. But rebuilding the ancient CB is a given anyways.
SinR6 I was thinking the same thing. The cat is way more restrictive than any muffler is ever going to be. The proper thing to do is buy a no cat header and some good slip ons. Then you will have nice sound and probably more HP.
Removing the cat is going to free up the most flow therefore power. Also, the stock EFI isn't going to keep up with the proper AFRs from significant exhaust changes. Opening up the exhaust coupled with a tune will absolutely free up some power on almost any bike. Ripping off the muffler isn't the brightest idea by any means but there absolutely is power to be had from opening up exhaust. The old adage of an engine is an air pump is 100% true and there is a reason riders have "uncorked" bikes for decades, you just have to do it right. Case in point I recently did a very sedate Honds VT750 (Shadow) for a novice rider, removed stock baffles, opened up the intake and changed jets and made a recorded 4.67hp at the tire vs stock. Most of this was likely due to the bike being quite lean from the factory however almost 5whp is nothing to sneeze at on a low 40hp 749cc twin cylinder machine for the cost of a $50 jet kit and an hours time.
First thing I did to my Z900 was unbolt the fugly 10# muffler, I don't even care if it hurts power, let alone increase it, the deeper, throatier, bass(eyer?) sound is well worth it and I'll never go back.
To me, a bike is all about two things; speed and sound. I mean, very loud noise. If it 's not fast, please, let me remain with loud sound. Loud enough to be heard 3 km away.
The pre muffler (goat belly) is where 80% of your noise reduction occurs. What you pulled off is the resonator. If you pull the pre muffler and run a straight pipe from the headers, you'll bust some eardrums.
In most european countries, riding without a muffler is a clear and very fast way to ask for a ticket, in some places lose insurance cover (you crash without a muffler , and the insurance will say it's absolutely not their problem as the bike was definitely illegally modified, freeing them of their side of the contract even if the muffler had nothing to do with it), and in many places to even get your bike taken out of service - as in, get it transported to a shop out of your pocket, fix the problem, and prove that it now is quiet enough, using an official expert, who will charge a couple hundred just to verify that in his expert opinion, your original muffler is now back on the bike. And IMO rightfully so. At least that tiny bit of respect should be given to the people who live within a mile of a road - which is literally everyone over here.

Technically a slip-on costs infinity times more than removing your muffler
Shhh this is the internet lol
Idk why this made me laugh so hard😂
Umm that's not how math works
Error times more
If we're going technical, let's also mention that people should drop the 'more' when using that sentence. 500 is 500x1. So the sentence should be 'it costs 500 times the other option'. Even clearer would be 'it costs 500 times as much as the other option'.
'500 times more' is technically meaningless because 'more' isn't defined as a number, even though we all understand what someone means when they say it.

To get the actual effect of a straight pipe you would have to take out the catalytic converter. The benefits come from no gas restrictions so keeping the catalytic converter is counter intuitive if you are trying to straight pipe. Also the engine must be tuned for this.
They belong on the race track.
arent the parents of babys awake all the times anyways? ;-)
No i totaly agree.
It's an NC700 and should be whisper quiet. My Versys used to be loud, but it was just annoying.
if you're a good neighbour then i suggest you stick to the stock muffler. I ride a Duc Monster and the stock exhaust are loud enough. i usually only start the engine when im about to ride off slowly. The “big, under engine box” is the catalytic converter.
Most bikes have no catalytic converter or resignator. That's strictly new gen bikes. Yes fuel injected bikes will likely need new MAPs which is easy to do. Also some carbs don't need re-jetted.

You only get top end power gain with the muffler removed. Running straight and no baffles or with no can you loose low end grunt and mid range.

My 1982 yamaha xs400R Seca loves the MAC 2 to 1 headers/exhaust I put on without baffles or any can muffler.. But it is ridiculously loud and heat-score I will admit. Lol but it shoots flames and sounds amazing in the high 5,000 to 10,000 rpm range
Burnt valves are more common with no header at all. Just no muffler. Na. Just obnoxiously loud.
I love that sound with the muffler off 😍
But but but every HD everrr "loud pipes save lives" lol...
They do, if you split lanes. At least Harley sounds OK semi loud. Sounds like a V8 engine rather than angry mosquitoes like the small I-4 engines.
Grieg Ragen that's your opinion
@Grieg Ragen BRAP BABY
I proudly own a quiet Harley.
i couldn’t hear this video cause my bikes to loud
I wouldn't hear this video bc your bikes too loud!! JK 😅
Its a myth that straight piping burns valves. The myth originated in the carbureted days when you had to rejet your engine after a new pipe but with modern EFI your bike with automatically accommodate for your straight pipe.
👏 Well done ✅
Future video subject: "Is modifying the air box bad for a motorcycle?"
People tend to drill holes in their air boxes (like you did on the scooter) but it's a different story when you can't cover them up with tape 😂
sennsir_ For bikes like the cbr650f and r6 have their airbox straight under the the gas tank where air is channeled throughout it. Cutting a hole into These bikes will not harm it much but it will cause the air to flow incorrectly affecting the tuned airbox that the manufacturer made. But that's just what I heard
Speed holes lol
* BIG NOISE ~ small penis *.
Not really worth doing, but as long as the holes are before the filter (there are dummies out there :) it is fine to do. The 02 sensors will detect any change in air flow and compensate for it. That's why to get any real gains from high flow filters and sports exhausts you need to re-map the ECU to tell it what to do, otherwise it will try it's best to run stock power and you risk running lean or rich.
my 96 Hagna will barley run without the stock air box snorkel, regardless of how I jet the carbs.
You removed a part of the exhaust system, this R3 still has a lot of stuff like a catalytic converter which create most of the backpressure. Inthis bikes case, you could remove the muffler, it wouldnt make any difference as you prooved or damage the engine since the backpressure didnt really change.
Break in new engine hard or easy?
the8jrfan both
Drive it normaly, but keep a 20 % distance to the red line.
Redline it once 10 15 minutes
Follow the owners manuals guidelines. They should know it better than 'a bloke from internet'.
Hard
Cops don't pull over Harleys that's super loud but sports bike community they don't like us 😂
Its needed in Lagos,Nigeria where we have so many blind drivers... they are either texting, calling or eating while driving... even sleeping and driving
Squid life!
RN 22, yoshi, no dB killers, no regrets.
Voodoo shorty pipe no baffle no packing on a busa sounds great.
A lot of bikes sound better without being too loud if the internal baffles are pulled. CB750 Nighthawk do.
Change your air box or intake.
Open it up or remove and put a K&N on and you’ll be happier at less cost and better performance.
Thanks, 50 Years on 2 wheels and I still cringe, and call the noise cops, on ridiculously tinny, loud bikes ripping through my neighborhood. I was always respectful on my bike. The cops, also, hear your bike coming.
No point in getting an obnoxiously fast bike if you can't make it roar like a lion. Just took mine off today - sounds like a beast.
Nice job MC Garage! We are with you 100% "someone stole my sweet slip-on" ...So good!
So you run straight pipe ? And you dts see a difference on your power ?
Just bought a muffler from you
Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc. I want a set of your hand bent headers for my Kawi Z900RS 👍
Very loud bikes are the reason why new bikes are so quiet now! Back in the late sixty's bike sounded great from the factory, now more like lawnmowers.
This dude just hates running no mufflers and is looking to justify that difference in taste beyond simple opinion.
so if taking the muffler off cost $0 and it 500x more expensive to get the yosh
500 * 0 = 0 therefore he yosh is free
Exactly
Some dude with a loud pipe definitely took this guys girlfriend
That’s comment is the embodiment of everything wrong with the sport bike scene
She does have a nice backfiring crackle when letting of the throttle quickly .. sounds sweeeeeet
.....long story short ... if you change something of the engine....tune it correctly ..
Am I the only one that noticed his eyes were super red and glossy in the beginning lol
Oxi and edible before the shoot, that's my guy💪
boy here high as fuck lol
"Just a quick tutorial...no ones gonna even notice probably" 🍄🥦🤣
Removing the secondary muffler is not too big of a deal. If you remove the primary muffler you are going to need tuning and a full exhaust solution.
I would have an answer to the question; “do you mind, I’m on the phone?”
I don’t think she would have liked my answer at all. I don’t think she would have enjoyed having to buy a new phone.
I live in LA and practice the same technique as you. There are SO many jackasses on their phones while driving and I have been guilty of deleting some side view mirrors.
to be fair, I uh… have anger issues I need to work through though 😅
@@joujimiichi1 I don't blame you people who text and drive don't need to be on the road.
You guys are the most relief channel on RUclips.....
Just about spreading the truth and the experience
For a used 300 its just not worth it. A slip on costs ~20% of the entire bike. Make them cheaper ffs.
Buy a used slip on?
@@MezzoMixUniversal I bought my full system new for like $300.
“Im new at this” saved my riding life
Remember a texting boy or girl on a SUV will not notice you even you got an 18 wheeler horn + christmas lights.
Nice one Ari 😀👍. Am more than excited to see a walkaround video of your new R3 race bike. Can you do one like you did for your race spec RC 390 ?
Taking the muffler off won't make a difference to BHP, but you should see a difference in the power delivery. Any chance you can put up both graphs, would like to see a difference (if any)?
I couldn't agree more... please people STOP doing this.... and if you cant afford a new Slip On .... ebay or Craigslist a used one.
Or even a Dan moto! They're pretty decent pipes and are around $150.
Ian Enciso I'm gonna go rip the muffler of my cbr1000rr time to blow some eardrums out and set car alarms off (I'm serious) 😂
Colemr.mouse14 Deerhunter2014 cbr are ugly ass fook
Yes nah your just jealous you don't have one
Jeff O “gays” are typically flamboyant and crave attention..... much like riders who remove their muffler... “look at me everyone! Look at me!” So your logic is flawed
As a guy who builds engines for a living, straight pipes will never hurt your engine.
Not changing your oil frequently will in a hurry. I feel like this would be obvious.....
I have a Yosh pipe on my Fz09 and she backfires with nice flames and is Loud AF. Just the way i like it.
Tested the wrong bike. The under engine box is the muffler on that bike. You took the wrong muffler off. Most higher end (race) bikes only have one muffler.
shae grover yes but r3 is general sounds shit you should get the r6 which sounds awesome
One question
Is removing DB killer from stock exhaust is safe for our engine or not ?
Safe
@Sherif Khalil nah. Just remove the engine
4TH HORSEMAN how do you live with yourself. Go get a life, but my a bike
Ok just removed the wheels, what next?
It wont hurt anything.
(Motorcyclists are not automatically jerks if they have loud pipes, but it is worse if they combine bad driving habits and loud pipes.)
Further, the "loud pipes save lives" was started as a smart alec comment back in the early days of MCs.
Myrune1 take a shot every time he said pipes holy fuck
i can tell you this im not a rookie rider man my pipes have saved me more than once i always ride like im invisible. i dont put myself in those situations im thrown into them i dont go looking for bad situations i dont go out racing you must have misunderstood when i said goose it. i dont mean speed up i mean rev it up im always covering my clutch and brakes my fast reactions are also a contributing factor to my safety i anticipate and adapt. i dont go looking for trouble i just ride for the fun of it. not to be a speed demon yes i have fun with it but again i do NOT put myself in those situations morons in cages do if i see someon being stupid i back off or get away from them i dont want to be the next guy laying my biike down or getting hit by someone who doesnt pay attention while i respect you are clearly a more experianced rider im not trying to be a part of the problem im trying to set an example for younger riders so they dont end up in wrecks or other dangerous situations ive rode with rookies and tried to set a good example and not be a part of the problem but rather the solution.
Thanks for the info, I’ll go remove my muffler asap now. 👍🏽🙏🏽💪🏽
If a slipon is 500 time's more expensive than removing the muffler then a slipon is free because removing the muffler is free
Kawasaki Zx6r’s do not have o2 sensors. The Zx6r’s sold in Usa don’t.
Would be curious to see how your GSX-R1000 does on the dyno without the stock end-pipe as it doesn't have a typical "bread box" like your R3 does.
it would probably run bad, since the backpressure created by the R3's is under the bike, and that of the gsxr is in the Muffler.
I like how he takes a bike with huge CAT for the HP numbers :P
Giving people misconceptions for the good of others.
Careful he is our hero!
Thanks for your work !! Your videos are always super informative and well made
He is the Austin for bikes.
Just YouTubing Austin? As in Austin of Shoddycast?
