@@jun4466 same, not funny at all, it's a completely different language ffs of course the sounds and gestures are going to be different but there's nothing funny about that. Just because you don't understand what a person is saying doesn't make those words any less valuable. I guess Americans don't get that because they are so used to being talked to in English and never bothering to learn a second language :D

Kind of unfortunate - I felt like they were just laughing at the way she spoke and moved. Marie is too cute, and her system is actually really practical. I've color-sorted everything in my drawers this way (and my husband's clothes), so you can see each t-shirt / item easily. Storing vertically gives you more space, and because they stand up on their own, it's easy to remove and add items without messing up the folding. Socks last longer this way because you aren't stretching out the elastic. It's really a great book & system.

I wonder if Marie gets annoyed with people not taking it seriously in the States when she does a tv show segment? Of course, it's polite to not show your annoyance or gossip about it... I get this vibe that people are a little disrespectful when they have her on shows and you can tell they think its too over the top or ridiculous. If you have her on your shows, give her ways an honest chance and you might see why it benefits the process of tidying. Plus if you really read her books, mostly she wants it to be joyful for you, so if something works better for you that is a little different, she wants you to do it that way. :)
I love Ellen and realize it's supposed to be a funny show, but if you're trying to endorse an author, you don't make them feel like their methods are really weird to you and too extreme. You say, "Wow! This actually makes sense and is beneficial!"

Heather Ahr I completely agree with you. They may not see it as helpful because they can afford to pay people to help them tidy, but konmari's method is so helpful for individuals who need the extra advice to help themselves. I think her book is so inspiring

Years ago in Japan, a lady (she is a famous tv person but she likes to clean) came with her cleaning methods and a book. When she did a tv show segment the MC (in this case, a man)was laughing at her like what she was doing wasn't something good or great. That was akward to watch just like this one...
If people don't get it, fine. But I wish they were more respectful to their guests...
I admire Marie. She's got a passion, you can see she really just goes for it despite her job being quite unique and quirky. So cool!

Yeah, iI felt the same too. That she wasn't being taken seriously. Japanese culture is so full of knowledge and spirituality that is worth to learn from them.
She may have also been exaggerating movement due to language barrier.
@ligia cruz, the Christian standard from a fundamentalist standpoint is that God is the source of all knowledge, reason, logic, etc., and that non-Western cultures lack a source of knowledge worth respecting, for that reason. For spirituality, it's a much larger problem. They discourage an open relationship with genuine spirituality, and see spiritual beliefs of outsiders as a reason for fear, anger, and ridicule, in any order you please. Even many less fundamentalist or less/not Christian people have some lingering version of this going on.
Ellen is known for her comedy.....She was very nice..the audience loved both of them...U guys need a "joy" chip in ur life...peace out
this book changed my life. alot of people think it's stupid to feel joy with material things. but in all honesty it's so worth it to take care of your stuff. it definitely is life changing. I will admit i relapsed once , but it was sooo easy to get back on track.

Marie Kondo's method is absolutely fantastic and has a lot of benefits especially for people with mental health issues who often struggle with maintaining order and picking up after themselves. A lot of what she writes and does is heavily related to and based on the tenets of psychological therapy, especially mindfulness therapies. This clip felt incredibly disrespectful to a really excellent book and author, especially as most of what the audience and Ellen seemed to find so amusing were just differences in culture and language between Japan and the US.

HATED how they were basically mocking her, even when she merely spoke - mocking the fact she speaks a different language and through an interpreter. I like Ellen but when anyone is just slightly different she makes fun of them. I noticed this when she has Celine Dion on her show. So disrespectful. I get she is a comedian but I think if you are doing a talk show you should honour your guests- not make fun of them.

I am a 30+ japanese woman (born in western culture,lived there for a while and then moved to japan) never read Marie Kondo books because I've seen her on various japanese tv shows and thought that her method wasn't very new to me or just not for me.(but yes, her book was a best seller in japan)
She never talked this fast in those shows but maybe they didn't have enough time for her. Still, the girl was trying her best to let people know what was her method about, even knowing language and culture comes in the way. And that was what she got:

Marie did not get the respect she deserves in this segment. i know about her and her methods but never read the book or watched her show. however. she is someone who has changed so many lives using a very helpful method. but here it just seemed lik the host and everyone else alienated her.... because it’s so different. it’s a funny show but there were many serious moments and i think this moment didn’t have to be completely serious, but at least show some respect and understanding! it was completely condescending and honestly rude.
I completely agree. I read her book and it changed my way of looking at and treating my stuff. I like Ellen but this just sent a mocking vibe to me.
I admire Marie's ability to keep a positive mindset and her energy up during this skit. You can really feel like no one was taking her seriously, that the fact she spoke Japanese and used a translator was apparently humorous, and that she was just a joke the entire time. Marie really is a saint.

Marie is now on Netflix with her new show "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo". Watch the episodes as she helps people who are overwhelmed with their stuff, or moving into adulthood, or who are expecting a child, or who are overworked parents, or who have had a spouse pass away, etc. Her "spark joy" is a sure magic method to sort their stuff as to keep it or remove it from their future. Watch her episodes as she brings joy into so many lives.
I binge watched all the episodes in one afternoon. It is so good. The episode with the lady who had lost her husband was really touching and emotional. And Marie had the utmost respect and consideration for her. It's a Very special episode.

"Tiniest instead of tidiest"... It's possible that even though Ellen was joking, Marie was offended. After all, she commented on something that Marie may have been insecure about to begin with, and hearing it on national television only worsens the scenario.

Oh wow just realized the video is 2yrs old and I'm thinking it's recent because of the show. Well, I'm a 34yo human who had an issue with messes. It's not that I wanted to be messy but rather that I didn't KNOW how to organize, I would say I don't have that VISION where you look at a mess and KNOW what to do. I binge watched her show and not only have I picked up and cleaned about 80% of my apartment but I've also MAINTAINED IT. I LOVE the folding idea and as a person that is not a big consumerist I don't have many clothes but even then I was able to get rid of clothes that no longer sparked joy... I'll admit I kept about one or two t-shirts that didn't spark joy but I need some t-shirts just for my lazy days, I don't want to get rid of those to buy new ones, made no sense in my head. THANK YOU MARIE KONDO, even though you'll never see this comment. You changed my life and for that I am grateful.

Very well put! While I was going through some things myself, I would grab things and instead if thinking and reasoning myself into keeping it, I focused on the "Spark Joy" aspect. Indeed a lot of things I had felt quite burdensome, because really I had been keeping them for the sake of keeping them, they didn't actually make me happy, and really I was never going to use them. It's a simple concept and was life changing for me!
I hope I'll get a job that I can love to do like that woman
I love Marie Kondo! Her book is so amazing and it's really handy to have for reference. I'll forget sometimes how to do something, (like how I should get rid of my clothes) and it'll say something along the lines of "don't focus on what you want to get rid of but rather what you want to keep."
I read Marie's book last year and spent the last half on 2018 decluttering my entire house, this method is a life changer. Give it a try!
I'm following the Konami method now and I'm still in shock to realize everything that I get to organize the way she taught is kept perfectly organized ever since! All my clothes are now in place. I've thrown away what I had to and already separated a bag for donations. Next step: SHOES!

+0808sumire Actually Ellen always acts dumb and pretend to be understand of every language not only asian languages, I saw she also did that with Spanish and Mexican in her show. So I think she's not racist, it may be her personality. If she doesn't like asian I think she wouldn't invite any asian to her show. By the way, I'm also asian.
I can understand why it might come across as that, and i kind of thought the same thing, but in "defense" of ellen (for lack of a better term), i think she might be approaching that from a comedic angle to create a dynamic between the "straight man" (kondo) and the "foil" (ellen). Kondo seems to be a very confident public speaker and seems used to audiences and television appearances, leaving ellen room to act a bit silly and timid. I think her logic is to give kondo the space she needs to essentially demonstrate and promote her technique and book while appearing to be a bit powerless and out of her (ellen's) element for comedic effect. This keeps the audience laughing (or cued to laugh), which makes it more engaging, in terms of predicable rhythm, to the viewer. So, i think that her perspective on the language thing was meant to be a place of "i'm overwhelmed for comedic effect" than "this person is an alien and talks funny." I also wouldn't be surprised if this was semi-rehearsed beforehand, just to iron these types of things out and to make sure the segment stays on beat.
That being said, i see your point. We focus on microaggressions more than we used to, i think, and that's helped cast a critical light on american culture and the stereotypes and tropes, sometimes destructive, that we take for granted without realizing it. At the same time, i believe that this can lead to us reading into things a bit too much and adding meaning and prejudice where there is simple humor or, at worst, thoughtlessness. Suspicion in the mind makes ghosts in the dark, so to speak.
Yeah I'm pretty sure she wouldn't discriminate towards the minority considering she's gay...

I have noticed that when Ellen has an interpreter on her show, she does not know how to act around the guest. She pokes fun at them speaking a different language and doesn't seem to pay them the same amount of attention. I expect more from a host. I respect Ellen as a person and the things she has accomplished, but I feel like there's been a trickle of cringy things that she does that make me less interested in watching her work.
I didn't interpret it as Ellen making fun of speaking a different language, it seemed to me like poking fun at the awkwardness of having an interpreter on set.
May look silly to some but her book really did change my life. I went through my entire home and ended up donating so much. I only kept things that truly meant something to me and on a deeper level it taught me to not put so much importance in owning random things but cherishing what I do have and what does have significance for me. A simple message but Marie tells it with so much sincerity. Love her!
Marie is very graceful. She is inspiring millions I'm sure with methods. Good for her and good for us too.

Her method makes perfect sense to anyone from an eastern culture , im sure. The idea of thanking your space, your possessions and general gratitude is very much a part of our life and taught to us growing up. And while i understand these things might be new to someone in west, i wish they wouldnt mock it. Marie however, takes it very sportingly.

I believe that Marie Kondo will be doing this tidying up thing even when nobody is watching. Even when she is not promoting her books or stand a chance to earn millions. I think she is wired this way. Unique and utterly interesting.
