    Very useful!
My 2 damsons are really 'bushy' (thanks to inexpert pruning by me a few years ago) and also suffer from progressive bracket fungus. They are not dead, but maybe have a limited life left. I'll prune heavily today (July 30th, hot) and hopefully get a few more years of fruiting. If and when I replace with younger trees, will bracket fungus infect any younger replacements, I wonder. Limited space, but maybe plant the replacements somewhere else in the garden?

@@bindyboy thanks for watching and the message.
Not sure what you mean by heavily pruning but don’t reduce the plant by more than a third in volume otherwise it will suffer with stress, which could speed up its demise.
Bracket fungus only grows on/in dead matter so won’t effect a future replacement tree.
Hope you still get some decent fruits.

Given his wet our summer has been this year (2024) would it still be ok to work on my damson? You mentioned that you could lose 1/3 of the canopy, are you going to do further work on this damson this year?

Hi Michael. Many thanks for watching the video and your question.
Sorry for the slightly delayed response but yes you will be fine to still prune your Damson tree now.
I trained one of the lads at the farm on how to do the basics of tree pruning so hopefully he will continue the progress made last year.
If you need any help then feel free to message me here or, as an easier method, via instagram.

I have a damson which is 6 or 7 yrs old, it is very vigorous but does not have one main trunk like a plum, instead it has 4 or 5 main trunks coming from the ground. How would i prune this?

      Hi Kathryn.
Many thanks for watching and the message.
So before giving a full answer the question is is your tree producing new growth from the main trunk above or below a grafting point?
Does your tree normally produce fruit okay?

@diyhomeandgardening there is no sign of a graft just several tru ks emerging from ground. It had scattered bloom in the tree last late spring. It was sold to.me as a Merriweather variety

The fruit is now off our tree. Can I prune now or is it too late?

Can't find the bit about rejuvenating a damson tree. Where is it?

    • @diyhomeandgardening

Hi Chris thanks for watching and messaging.
There isn’t a specific part that is rejuvenating more that the whole method of pruning, tidying up, removal of dead wood and opening up the tree canopy will have a rejuvenating effect on an old tree in poor condition.
Through correct maintenance you will be removing the unproductive wood so that the tree goes into growth phase of productive growth for the subsequent years.
Hard pruning of trees should only be done to remove a maximum of a third of overall volume each year, thereby the rejuvenation occurs over a 3 year cycle.
      Hope this helps.
All the best with your fruiting trees and gardening 🪴

Is it too late to prune a damson tree in September?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening  Год назад

      Hi Sarah.
Thanks for the message. Really it is too late to do your pruning now. Stone fruits are pruned in the summer, before the temperatures begin to drop and cooler wetter nights as it pretty much eliminates the risk of the plant getting bacterial infections such as silver leaf.
Pruning is undertaken at the same time as fruit being present.
      Hope this helps.
