Installing Patio Pavers Over Existing Concrete

  • This project was as a result of tree roots pushing up the 4X4' concrete slabs on my existing patio. I didn't want to go through breaking up the entire thing, so I came up with a plan were I could remove the offending area and give it an entirely different look. I had two issues with the way I built this patio over the old concrete one. First, the holes left from the 2 X 4s’ between the slabs should have been filled with concrete. Rain water seeped down through the tiles and washed some of the leveling sand down and through these holes. Apparently there is quite a bit of wash out under some of the slabs. I had to pull up most of the center pavers and fill the holes with concrete and then re-level with sand. It really wasn’t a pleasant experience. The second issue was when I decided to coat the patio with Thompson's Water Seal. Well with just one coat, the water seal changed the color to a dark gray brown blotchy mess. So to make it look smooth and consistent, I had to give it two coats, and at about three gallons a coat, it got expensive. The water seal does the job; however, I never thought it would cause so much color change and grief.

      on the patios where i've used sands as fill the homeowners are eventually forced to use ant sprays...ants seem drawn to it as a home and seem to find routes between the polymeric paver grouts...
      just a comment.

      Ok, why would you remove the concrete at all? I've done a similar job and instaled the pavement over concrete almost a decade ago. What's worse its my driveway so there's a lot of weight on it. Never had any problems with sinking or moving of surface as lonf as you compress it the right way..

      verlag are u an idiot ...his concrete has been upended by the tree roots...he had to get rid of those slabs..how do u put pavers over a concrete slab that is lifted up and uneven from being heaved up by tree roots ..get rid of slabs cut down on the roots use gravel sand to level

    • @kbanghart
      @kbanghart 5 лет назад

      @@QPham-nz5po ok, so I thought maybe this video would show something slightly different than it did, but your comment helps me out, I have some tree roots that I need to dig up, so I can just dig through those to give me enough space in the ground right? I think what I'll do for my project is simply pour a concrete slab, and then some decorative pavers over the top. I don't think I need to worry too much about the slab cracking beneath, since it'll be covered. I used to have grass, but my dogs destroyed it, so need to go for something much more sturdy.

    • @themostlymikeshow
      @themostlymikeshow 3 года назад +1

      @@shirleerogers5969 I actually didn't use mortar on my project, but it didn't come out bad. The pavers that I had were really old used ones of various sizes, so much of it was like putting a puzzle together. All things considered, it looks pretty decent.

    • @RonBudman
      @RonBudman  4 года назад +1

      Steve, I live in the middle of Pennsylvania and It does get quite cold here. Since I laid the tiles on top of sand, I have not had any problems due to freezing. I did pour polymeric sand in the cracks. I will tell you this, many years ago (1950's) my summer job was to cement in flagstone on top a concrete patio at my dad's house. It lasted many years. If you should decide to cement them, I would be sure to put down a couple good coats of sealer. Good luck, Ron

      So i am looking into doing sand and paver driveway over existing asphault is this a bad idea and why? I am thinking the asphalt is impermeable and most people would recommend lifting up the entire driveway and redoing the whole thing. I just wonder if i couldnt drill holes in the asphault for drainage or even use a concrete walk behind saw to tear up the driveway for drainage, then lay sand and pavers beneath? Instead of taking up the whole thing which really is a nice base to begin with

      I did just that. Never removed the concrete and now a decade later everything is PERFECT. No sinkage or anything.. Just compress the gravel and go for it.. You would be mad to remove all that concrete...

    Hi, I av a back yard with concrete on the floor, over the years its began to crack, so like u ive thought about putting sum sharp sand over it, then abit of dry concrete, then sum slabs, then brushing sum dry mix in the gaps then wetting it, n over tym the rain will wet the dry concrete under neath n set it, im so glad I saw ur video because now I think it will work, do u think it will work

    • @RonBudman
      @RonBudman  9 лет назад

      Kerry, thanks for your question. I suppose the dry concrete will work; however, I think that using sand allowed me to compact and level the sand easier than using dry concrete mix. As for the final filling of the gaps, I used polymeric sand which is made for the application.

    • @RonBudman
      @RonBudman  7 лет назад

      lockodonis Don't know. Since I made this video, some of the sand seeped down through the cracks and it became unlevel. I had to lift up some of the blocks, fill the gaps with cement and re-lay the blocks. Since that it seems to be holding up quite well. Just make sure there are no holes for the water to wash the sand through.
