The second-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been on sale in Australia since 2018, but only in high-spec and high-performance Mercedes-AMG G 63 form, which is now sold out despite its circa-$300K price tag.
However, there is now a new point of entry to the legendary G-wagen - the 2022 Mercedes-Benz G 400d - and it employs the same tough ladder frame and much of the G 63 AMG’s in-car tech.
The new G 400d also packs the most powerful diesel engine fitted to a Mercedes-Benz production vehicle, but it’s already a sell-out in Australia too - despite an admission price of $233,900 plus on-road costs.
As Sam Charlwood discovers, there is nothing ‘entry-level’ about the new G-Class diesel.

The G400d is amazing but I was hoping the base model was going to be around $150,000 but it’s around $270,000...

Me too, I believe that Australian dealer is too aggressive. I found out the G55 in the us is around AUS$180,000. This G400d shouldn't over that price. G55 is a V8!!!!!

@@neddiego2570the luxury tax doesn't even make sense since you can get stuff like the ram 1500 limited for 120k

Good review, the lovely Mercedes g-wagon is my favourite mercedes off all time and it's the mercedes ever built and this is the car I will buy one day 😊😊😊
I thought the Defender was expensive..
For me, it's the fuel efficiency:
Petrol G Class: 11-18 mpg (4.68-7.65 kmpl)
Diesel G Class: 25.7 mpg (11 kmpl).
Diesel model is greatly less polluting.
Yes, I can like a nice car while trying to not pollute too much.
Mercedes is way too greedy with this car, its becoming annoying tbh.
They make it by hand in one factory in the entire world. Given that, it makes sense the prices. I wish they’d expand the production.
@@AA-vr8ez bullshit, they make them in Austria in the same factory where the Toyota Supra or BMW Z4 are assembled, that Mercedes’ is just way overpriced and made in low volume to keep the prices too high. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

Stupid price in my opinion all euro cars are overpriced
It’s an amazing vehicle and the best off-roader ever. I’d love one for camping and off-roading but they cost way too much. LCT is painful. Celebs have ruined its reputation as a decent off-roader to a pavement princess
For that money I rather by Jeep Rubicon and Mustang Mach1 to have double fun.....
I’d rather buy a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Peugeot 208 GTI
How do they compare in reliability to a Landcruiser?
They're beasts especially the diesel versions. They can go over 200K miles with proper maintenance.
These will spank the land cruiser hard

It's not expensive it USA. Australia has a luxury vehicle tax.
