This has been a major struggle for me. Whenever I try to sleep on my side or back I feel my brain being hyperactive because I need the pressure on my stomach and face to make me feel calmed down and winded down enough to sleep, and when I'm on my back I just stare at the ceiling for hours and I jump up whenever I start to dose off, it's a curse
I roll over like a rotisserie chicken (over and over again) every night as I get sore on each side, and then rotate, but I’ve never been able to sleep on my back! I would just lay awake for hours.
Pillow on the chest is the best advice I've heard so far. I miss that pressure and that's why I can't break my habbit of sleeping on my stomach. I'll definitely try this!
You won’t feel any pain right away, but what will happen is it will knock your neck out of whack and it can cause mild irritation throughout the day. For me it’s constant headaches that don’t seem to go away but there’s a whole list of symptoms that don’t always seem to correlate to stomach sleeping at first.
I've slept on my stomach my whole life and being on my back makes it nearly impossible to sleep because I'm not at all comfortable. It's just weird. But also, I know I need to stop. I've had shoulder pains and and I have constant lower back pain and neck pain and sometimes even chest pains. I'm 20 years old, 6'1, 230lbs and roughly 17% body fat. So that's a lot of weight that is on my spine and chest when I sleep. It's just really hard. I need help. I don't want to get old and sore and brittle.
Hey can you give me an update? I am legit seriously in need of help as well. I am 27 and always slept on my stomach and recent years started to see a chiropractor because of neck issues...
Great video! Somethimg which has totally worked for me is some sort of reverse engineering that I tried. I.e instead of starting off with sleeping on my back, I would start off with sleeping on my stomach and then before getting sleepyheaded, I would get tired enough of that and then switch to sleeping on my back. 8 times out of 10, I find myself sleeping on my back when I wake up. Hope this helps someone :)
Here's the weird thing - I actually used to sleep on my back as a kid! Then over time for some reason my sleeping posture got worse and worse. I changed to my side as a teen, then I could only sleep on my right side as an adult - and now I'm starting to sleep on my stomach (but not with my arms above my head - they're straight down like a torpedo, lol). It's super weird. I just ordered a memory foam pillow, hopefully having the right neck support will make the change easier (I'm a ridiculously light sleeper so none of my attempts have worked so far). Rambling aside, I'm pleasantly surprised about the weight on your stomach thing being universal.
Same story. Started on back, now torpedo man :). I also put a pillow under my left shoulder to reduce twist pressure on neck. Always left Probably not good long term for neck... Back no good because of snoring. Will try side again.. but not likely to succeed.
I might cry! I’m in so much pain right now and have been for the past week (neck, scapula area, shoulder, arm) and now I know why!! I had no idea stomach sleeping was so bad. It’s so comfortable, Wah I don’t wanna give it up. Stomach sleeping is so warm and cozy and comforting. Now I have to change a 44 year old habit 😭😭😭
Breathing properly throughout the day will relax your stomach and remove the need of pressure when laying on the bed, that's the conclusion I got from finding the answers
This is gonna sound really weird , but whenever i try and sleep on my back i get that shock feeling of falling just before i start to sleep, and it scares me so much i just roll over lol. Its like my heart beats super fast . I don't know why this happens, or how to stop it but my back is killing me from sleeping on my front all the time.
That's sleep apnea. I had the same problem for a few months either way when falling asleep. However now I don't get it but still don't get sleep in any other position.
When I had both ears operation I wasn’t allowed to sleep on my ears and after about 5 days since I slept on my back I noticed a major difference on my face, seriously I looked 10 years younger, my face wasn’t crushed for 8 HRs every night on my side and my chest was the same , totally wrinkle free, I will try to sleep with pillows under my legs and a wedge under my head, might works finally sleeping on my back, great video thanks!!❤️✨❤️✨
Most of my neck and shoulder issues stem from sleeping on my stomach. I don’t want to rely on chiropractors all the time to make me feel better, so I’m gonna use the advice in this video 😭😭😭
Slept on my stomach since an infant and it’s very inconvenient as an adult to no be able to sleep unless on my back. Tired of my face serums getting on my pillow instead of staying on me.
I have a habit of sleeping on the left side of stomach and my neck in right direction. But it leads to pain in my left side of chest, stomach and neck. It also causes discomfort in my left hand. I'm really wat to thank you for making this video. I am trying to get rid of the habit.
I have always slept on my stomach, I have been suffering with muscle pain between shoulder blades ever since I was a child. I just started sleeping on my back, i hope all the muscle pain goes away.
Thanks for the tips! I'm 52 years old, and sleeping on my stomach has been giving me awful neck pain lately. I know that's the cause, but I can't seem to sleep any other way. I'll dig up a marble and give it a try.
I have large breasts and sleep on a tempurpedic. I doubt I would feel the marble. even if I did feel the marble, I doubt it would wake me up. I've had people tell me they think I'm dead when I sleep. I am impossible to wake up, but I don't snore.
+Ana M. Any way you can adjust this modification to your sleep that can help, go for it. Maybe find a larger marble or pile up pillows next to you so that you don't automatically roll over. Get creative with it!
I tend to start off on my back and sometimes my side, but end up on my stomach most nights, some nights I'll wake up on my back and I'm still in a lot of pain. I have an rather large chest and my posture is poor because of it. I take sleeping medication as I do not sleep without it due to other disabilities such as ADHD, etc. Not sure what to do at this point. I haven't had a new bed in over 10 years as I end up with hand me downs (I cannot afford it, SSI does not bring in that kind of money). If I wake up in the middle of the night I usually cannot go back to sleep despite being a somewhat heavy sleeper due to medications.
Aeladya It sounds like we have the exact same issues! I went on this video just now to try to fix this problem. Since it’s been a year since you commented this, have you figured any solutions out in the meantime?
I'm a side sleeper, trying to transition to back-sleeping. Tried so many methods, even tying my hands to the sides of the bed (eventually I learned how to free my hands whilst asleep) and so all of them failed. I'm gonna try the marble method tonight
I’m 30 years old, I have been sleeping on my stomach on the floor for literally my entire life , I heard it was healthy to sleep in the floor and never knew sleeping on your stomach was bad......I am in extreme pain daily and sometimes can’t even walk due to low back pain and hip pain .....I absolutely can not sleep on my stomach anymore because the pain is unbearable , I’m currently waking up about 10 times through the night trying to adjust and get comfortable 😢 my life quality is a solid 1out of 10!
Have you tried adding pillow under lower belly and hips? Otherwise try side sleeping with a pregnancy pillow (bc they're long) you can hug it and wrap it under your knees. I'm a stomach, back and side sleeper. Back hurts the worst if I end up on my stomach. The least on my back. I have only noticed when hugging heavy pillows helps prevent me from rotating
Thank you! I had never heard sleeping on your back is bad until a few months ago, and I havent been able to break the habit. Some of my family has back issues and I do not wanna go through that myself.
Can you speak to the bio mechanical reason people sleep on their stomach? I would think a shortened hip flexor area and abdomen are reasons people CANT sleep on their back, because they legs want to curl and the hips feel uncomfortable for the abdomen. These tricks are cute, but the momentum towards sleeping on the stomach is much larger than annoying mental cues - might work but still not the root cause
I know I’m 3 years late so I hope you see this. I think it’s a combination of things. When I sleep on my stomach, I love the pressure. Almost feels like a big warm hug. It can be a sensory thing too - might be related to sensory processing disorder if you’re on the spectrum. Can also be daily active imbalance posture which leads to myofascial pain syndrome. I noticed I have postural dysfunction, areas of muscle groups are strong and others are weak. Maybe if the daily active posture is addressed and get the muscle groups balanced it will help correct the sleep position too. To my understanding, you have to train yourself to fix your posture and it can take a few months. Another thing is probably a good morning and evening stretching + massaging routine is a good way to alleviate the stress/pain/tension. Understand which muscle groups are overworked/stressed and take time to massage it. What I find a bit surprising is this video didn’t mention anything about mattresses. How is a person supposed to address their sleep position when the mattress isn’t correct for the transition? Also what about pillow types? No mention of that either. I know he mentions sleeping on the back, I would prefer to sleep on my sides but unfortunately can’t sleep on my sides without arms going completely numb from the blood circulation cut off. Maybe a slight elevation to the upper body with one of those adjustable mattresses is better than being completely flat? Or maybe using those wedge pillows can help with sleep posture transition? I’ve thought about trying this, maybe worth investing. The marble technique he mentioned is so goofy. Tape? How is that supposed to stay put without coming off? On a personal note, I have sensory processing disorder…all this technique will do is amplify my frustration and give me a boost of energy. No thanks, I’ll pass. I said a lot (apologies if it appears disorganized) there’s probably more I can add but I’ll stop here 🙂
Any tips on how much sleep you should be getting? I’m currently a student getting roughly 6-7hrs of sleep a night, and although I’m told I need more, I physically feel fine... Thanks in advance if you reply :)
It varies on person to person but generally 4 REM cycles helps people feel rested best. If you can achieve it in 6 hours or 5 hours or 4 hours. Then it's very possible
The moment you realise this was before corona and when people were not being advised to sleep on their stomach to increase lung capacity! Good times good times
This is what I do as well but I've been experiencing a lot of hand and wrist pain from the pressure of sleeping on them every night. I'm trying hard to break the habit but it's challenging
@@fibbintiggins2858 Good to know! I hadn't thought about this. I get bad wrist pain when put pressure on my wrists, and I wonder if my sleeping position could be contributing to it.
At the most, I can only sleep for an hour off my belly. When I am in pain, I only get hourly sleep since I was unable to sleep without being on my stomach. Hourly sleep makes me more tired! That marble thing will mean waking up ever hour or less, all night!!!
I just can’t seem to sleep in any other position. I lost days of sleep in 2021 making a serious effort adapting into other positions. It’s been extremely hard and I’ve had zero success. I’m hoping some of these tips will help future attempts, although I’m pretty confident I’d just throw that marble across the room pretty early on. Haha
Sleeping position, just like many other things, is a habit. It's really tough to break habits. Try really small transitions that you may not notice right away. It may take awhile but slowly getting your body used to something new can trick your mind into thinking things aren't really changing.
I have lower back pain not caused by sleeping. When I sleep on my stomach as I've done for over two decades, I have no pain in my lower back. When I sleep on my back, my lower back feels like it's on fire.
Ha ha - I love that marble method (coming from someone who's a very deep sleeper) - thanks! I should try that. I would also like to sleep with my head elevated because of my nose getting stuffy about half-way through the night (I'll have to search your videos to see if you have one about that). Back sleeping is good for anti-aging to boot. ;)
I tried transitioning onto my back as it was causing me chronic pain. unfortunately the trick advised by my physio at the time (put a tennis ball into a pair of tights and tie it round me so the ball and the knot are at the front) left me with bruises but I still woke up on my front. I'm going to try the "build a pillow fort around me so I can't move around as much" technique. if anyone has any other tips or ideas I'd love to hear them, the way I sleep with one arm angled under my head has caused wear to my shoulder which has just been corrected by an operation, something I'd like to avoid in the future on the other side 😊😊
Unfortunately I developed the most idiotic sleeping posture for years I have been stomach sleeping to pillows, one arm goes under the pillow, sort of sits under my head, other is extended out the back.. no wonder I have so much pain, think I may have messed up the nerves in my arm and hand, notice it falls asleep a lot and goes tingling. Gonna give the pillow on the chest a go, as I find sleeping with my chest facing up, I feel so exposed my heart even starts to race 😂
It works I bought three rubber balls from the Dollar Store wrap string around them used a baby pin to pin it to my t-shirt and pin them on my chest and stomach woke up the next day with my lower back feeling much better. I did slept on my sides and not my stomach. I'll put them on my shoulders soon, so I can sleep on my back, I thought it was my bed thanks for making this video
I sleep on my stomach every night and tend to keep my arms positioned underneath me in some way. I've been having abdominal soreness and urgent urination when I wake up. Is it possible this is because of my sleeping position?
Your current sleeping habits could be affecting these issues, but there may be other factors that are contributing as welll. One way to find out is to try sleeping on your back or side (albeit it'll be difficult switching to a new sleeping habit)
Sleeping posture is a habit. Often, people who like sleeping on their stomach like having weight on their chest. It's best to start slow and try transitioning to your side first. Then slowly start transitioning to your back. You can try hugging a pillow or a weighted blanket to achieve a similar feeling to being on your stomach!
I can't stop sleeping on my stomach. It's so comfy! I wanted to ask, how do people sleep in one position the whole night? When I sleep, I change positions frequently. But the best for me is stomach. And when I sleep in other positions, I don't end up sleeping the whole night or something because for me to sleep I need comfort. Help?
+Rochelle Baboolal Hi Rochelle! Twisting and turning in your sleep is a very common issue that almost all patients experience. Sleeping is a habit that, like any other habit, can be trained through practice and consistency. All you have to do is keep setting your pillows up each night. Probably sleeping on your side is best, and you can always add more pillows for more comfort. I must stress the importance of sleeping in a neutral position. You may not have pain from sleeping on your stomach now, but you will if you continue bad postural habits.
+Rehab and Revive...I suffered for about 2 weeks, restless nights. Finally now I'm able to sleep on my back, not in one position though. I use a pillow between by legs and it helps a lot. Now I don't have to worry about face wrinkles :-)
I sleep on my back and my head ends up laying on my shoulder and my shoulder and neck go big ow and my legs criss cross apple sauce and idek why these things happen
I use to sleep on my back all the time then I became a smoker now it's just hard to do so and I know what he is talking about with using your hands well I use my arm but then when I wake up it feels like both my arms are asleep without the sting but I literally can't move them for 5 to 10 minutes and I know that's not good for the body

The moment you realise this was before corona and when people were not being advised to sleep on their stomach to increase lung capacity! Good times good times
Thank you sir.
I sleep on my stomach but I put my arms under my chest like a mummy... not over my head
I can’t breathe right when I’m on my back which is why I sleep on my stomach
In the end you still have to sleep and breathe this is just our best advice
Joey Bravado same brother, i am unable to breathe when i try to sleep on my back
lold so hard when he said the best way is to tape a marble to your chest lol
At the most, I can only sleep for an hour off my belly. When I am in pain, I only get hourly sleep since I was unable to sleep without being on my stomach. Hourly sleep makes me more tired! That marble thing will mean waking up ever hour or less, all night!!!
Best advice on best sleeping posture.
Watching this on my stomach
I just can’t seem to sleep in any other position. I lost days of sleep in 2021 making a serious effort adapting into other positions. It’s been extremely hard and I’ve had zero success.
I’m hoping some of these tips will help future attempts, although I’m pretty confident I’d just throw that marble across the room pretty early on. Haha
Sleeping position, just like many other things, is a habit. It's really tough to break habits. Try really small transitions that you may not notice right away. It may take awhile but slowly getting your body used to something new can trick your mind into thinking things aren't really changing.
@@RehabRevive I think you’re right. Smaller incremental goals. I haven’t given up. Thanks for your content. :)
This is a nice advice
Thank you
Almost 4 decades sleeping on my stomach, no issues.
Whenever I feel like I’m going to pass out I’ll lay on my back because it keeps me awake
You're amazing.
I hope you keep uploading great educational content like this.
Thank you! This is encouraging!
Thanks so much any 2020
I have lower back pain not caused by sleeping.
I can't sleep on back . I don't feel sleepy . But as soon as I sleep on my stomach I can sleep .
Side sleeping is hard on my neck too though. Any tips?
Sleeping on stomach is the biggest reason for nightfall, Heart problems n many other health issues
Thanks
I even rolled a pillow up and put it under my hips it relieved the pressure but then I get acid reflux.
Haha when you got caught sleeping, that was funny
Unfortunately I developed the most idiotic sleeping posture for years I have been stomach sleeping to pillows, one arm goes under the pillow, sort of sits under my head, other is extended out the back.. no wonder I have so much pain, think I may have messed up the nerves in my arm and hand, notice it falls asleep a lot and goes tingling. Gonna give the pillow on the chest a go, as I find sleeping with my chest facing up, I feel so exposed my heart even starts to race 😂
Been sleeping on my stomach for 55 years my lower back is killing me hope this works. Has anybody transition to their back with this method 12/09/20 ?
Yes
It works I bought three rubber balls from the Dollar Store wrap string around them used a baby pin to pin it to my t-shirt and pin them on my chest and stomach woke up the next day with my lower back feeling much better. I did slept on my sides and not my stomach. I'll put them on my shoulders soon, so I can sleep on my back, I thought it was my bed thanks for making this video
@@armandoochoa3637 amazing and great idea!
Thank you
Trying to do this in a bed that’s too small for you is very hard
Yeah, but sleeping on my back has a high chance of sleep paralysis. And that is one hell of a horrifying experience.
Does this marble on the chest work for women too?
I sleep on my stomach every night and tend to keep my arms positioned underneath me in some way. I've been having abdominal soreness and urgent urination when I wake up. Is it possible this is because of my sleeping position?
yes, as your putting pressure on your balls. ;)
Your current sleeping habits could be affecting these issues, but there may be other factors that are contributing as welll. One way to find out is to try sleeping on your back or side (albeit it'll be difficult switching to a new sleeping habit)

Yeah I'm not taping a marble to my chest hair. Sleeping on my back hurts my back. I also plank when I stomach sleep. With my head turned to the side.
I use a weighted blanket, it kinda works like the pillow thing you recommended
We LOVE weighted blankets! Especially for people who are trying to transition away from stomach sleeping. Glad you like it!
Did this mans just tell me to tape myself to the bed??
Camera sounds like it's been sleeping on its stomach
Great education
Thanks!
Would a good alternative be to put a pillow by my pelvis ?
Thxxx
I been sleeping on my stomach for years.... I'm try sleeping on my sides or back..but.. it's uncomfortable
I’ve fixed everything in my life to be as healthy as possible I can seem to sleep the correct way though😔
I get mad neck ache. Which results in headaches all day. It's not nice. I've tried but can't sleep properly in any other position. Please help
Whenever I sleep on my stomach I suffer from nightfall that's why i have to stop sleeping on my stomach. It is very annoying.
its so hard man but I need to stop it’s causing so much discomfort
No but the problem for me is I don’t feel anything so when I’m sleeping on my side I’ll roll onto my arms and I wake up not being able to move my arms
It's not my neck... it's my back...
I wish this feeling would just go awsy
Actual tips start at 1:48.
I sleep on my back and my head ends up laying on my shoulder and my shoulder and neck go big ow and my legs criss cross apple sauce and idek why these things happen
Ya, I will just deal with the side affects
I use to sleep on my back all the time then I became a smoker now it's just hard to do so and I know what he is talking about with using your hands well I use my arm but then when I wake up it feels like both my arms are asleep without the sting but I literally can't move them for 5 to 10 minutes and I know that's not good for the body
